Police make fresh attempt to arrest Imran as stalemate enters 2nd day

    [ad_1]

Islamabad: The stalemate between Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) supporters and law enforcement personnel continued for a second consecutive day on Wednesday near Imran Khans Zaman Park residence in Lahore amid fresh attempts to arrest the former Prime Minister in connection with the Toshkhana case.

TV footage also showed PTI workers outside Zaman Park setting motorcycles and other vehicles on fire, Dawn reported.

For more than 15 hours, PTI workers engaged the Islamabad police — aided by their Punjab counterparts and later Rangers personnel — in pitched battles that continued late into the night with no signs of relenting.

So far, the police have suffered around 30 casualties during the clash, while at least 15 PTI men have been detained.

In the latest video posted by the PTI on its official Twitter handle, the party claimed that the police had started tear gas shelling at Khan’s residence once again, Dawn reported.

Separately, in a series of tweets, the former premier said that after a day of facing tear gas, cannons with chemical water, rubber bullets and live bullets, “we now have Rangers taking over and are now in direct confrontation with the people”.

“My question to the establishment, to those who claim they are neutral’: Is this your idea of neutrality, Rangers directly confronting unarmed protestors & leadership of the largest political party when their leader is facing an illegal warrant & case already in court & when govt of crooks trying to abduct & possibly murder him?” he asked.

  • BBC sports coverage disrupted for second day over Gary Lineker Twitter row

BBC sports coverage disrupted for second day over Gary Lineker Twitter row

    [ad_1]

London: The BBC’s sports coverage faced a second day of disruption on Sunday as several members of its staff refused to work in solidarity with star football host Gary Lineker, who was taken off air over a tweet criticising the British government’s migration policy.

In a post on Tuesday on his Twitter account that has 8.7 million followers, 62-year-old Lineker a former England football captain and now one of the UK’s most influential media figures compared Rishi Sunak government’s language about migrants to that used in Nazi Germany.

He has not tweeted or commented since the row erupted but the broadcaster’s decision to block him from its flagship “Match of the Day” football show triggered mass walkouts by staff in solidarity.

Regular sport programmes that were due to be on-air have been replaced with previously aired episodes and some fixtures are to be telecast without the regular supporting expert commentary.

Tim Davie, the BBC’s director-general, apologised for the disruption and exuded hope that Lineker would be back on air soon.

“We are working very hard to resolve this situation and make sure we get output on air,” Davie told the BBC.

“I am in listening mode. I want to make sure that going forward we have a workable solution. To be clear, success for me is: Gary gets back on air,” he said.

There is mounting pressure on the top team to resolve the crisis after the BBC, which operates through a taxpayer-funded licence fee, said it considered Lineker posting such views on social media as a breach of its impartiality guidelines.

UK Chancellor Jeremy Hunt told Sky News that he “profoundly” disagrees with Lineker’s comments, but stopped short of demanding an apology.

“If you believe in BBC independence, then it’s not for the Chancellor or any other government minister to say how these issues are resolved,” said Hunt.

“The central thing that people want to know is that there isn’t any kind of political agenda in the way the BBC goes about its business, which I’m not saying there is, but that is the confidence people need to have,” he added.

The Conservative government attacked Lineker’s Nazi comparison of a planned illegal migrant crackdown as unacceptable, with UK Home Secretary Suella Braverman among the ministers who branded it “offensive”.

“I think it is, from a personal point of view, to hear that characterisation is offensive because my husband is Jewish, my children are therefore direct descendants from people who were murdered in gas chambers during the Holocaust,” Braverman told the BBC in the wake of the row earlier this week.

“To kind of throw out those kind of flippant analogies diminishes the unspeakable tragedy that millions of people went through and I don’t think anything that is happening in the UK today can come close to what happened in the Holocaust. So, I find it a lazy and unhelpful comparison to make,” she said.

This is the latest controversy over the role of the 100-year-old BBC after the broadcaster’s neutrality came under recent scrutiny over revelations that its chairman, Richard Sharp a donor for the governing Conservative Party was involved in the arrangement of a loan for the then Prime Minister Boris Johnson in 2021, weeks before he was appointed to the BBC post on the government’s recommendation.

Saudi Arabia marks Flag Day for the first time on March 11

    [ad_1]

Riyadh: For the first time in its history the streets and parks of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) were painted green in celebration of Flag Day, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported.

On March 1, the custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz issued a royal decree announcing March 11 to be celebrated as National Flag Day.

He posted a tweet, “The celebration of Flag Day comes as an affirmation of pride in our national identity, and its historical symbolism with great connotations and deep implications, which embodies our constants, and is a source of pride in our history.”

The Ministry of Culture also celebrated this national day by raising the flag at its headquarters in Riyadh. It organised cultural and artistic activities for a period of three days, including a theatrical performance entitled “Rise High”.

On Saturday the Saudi Minister of Education Youssef bin Abdullah Al-Bunyan celebrated the event with a group of students who hoisted the flag and sang the national anthem.

    Saleh Al-Mansouf passes away

Calligrapher Saleh Al-Mansouf, who is credited to design the Saudi flag 50 years ago passed away a few hours before the celebration.

Al-Mansouf wrote the word of monotheism with his hand and drew the sword on the banner with white dye.

    History behind the Saudi flag

The history of the flag dates back to the banner of the Imams of the first Saudi state which united its lands. The flag’s design underwent several changes over the years before sealing it on March 11, 1937.

Regulations for the flag were issued in 1973. It dictated the flag be rectangular in shape, green in color, and “There is no god but God, and Muhammad is the Messenger of God.” as its center.

A drawn sword with its fist pointed at the lower part of the flag is placed below it parallel to the words of monotheism written in Thuluth script.

  • UN observes first anti-Islamophobia day

    UN observes first anti-Islamophobia day

    [ad_1]

United Nations: The United Nations marked the first-ever International Day to Combat Islamophobia with a special event, where speakers upheld the need for concrete action in the face of rising hatred, discrimination and violence against Muslims.

The observation on Friday follows the unanimous adoption of a UN General Assembly resolution in 2022 that proclaimed March 15 as such an international day, calling for global dialogue that promotes tolerance, peace and respect for human rights and religious diversity, Xinhua news agency reported.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated that nearly 2 billion Muslims worldwide, who come from all corners of the world, “reflect humanity in all its majestic diversity”. Yet, they often face bigotry and prejudice simply because of their faith.

Moreover, Muslim women might face “triple discrimination” because of their gender, ethnicity, and faith.

The growing hate that Muslims face is not an isolated development, the UN chief stressed.

“It is an inexorable part of the resurgence of ethno-nationalism, neo-Nazi white supremacist ideologies, and violence targeting vulnerable populations including Muslims, Jews, some minority Christian communities and others,” he said.

“Discrimination diminishes us all. And it is incumbent on all of us to stand up against it. We must never be bystanders to bigotry.”

Stressing that “we must strengthen our defenses,” Guterres highlighted UN measures such as a Plan of Action to Safeguard Religious Sites.

He also called for ramping up political, cultural, and economic investments in social cohesion.

“And we must confront bigotry wherever and whenever it rears its ugly head. This includes working to tackle the hate that spreads like wildfire across the internet,” he added.

To this end, the UN is working with governments, regulators, technology companies and the media “to set up guardrails, and enforce them.”

Other policies already launched include a Strategy and Plan of Action on Hate Speech, and the Our Common Agenda report, which outlines a framework for a more inclusive and secure “digital future” for all people.

The UN chief also expressed gratitude to religious leaders across the world who have united to promote dialogue and interfaith harmony.

The high-level event was co-convened by Pakistan, whose Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari underlined that Islam is a religion of peace, tolerance and pluralism.

Despite Islamophobia not being new, he described it as a “sad reality of our times.”

“Since the tragedy of 9/11, animosity and institutional suspicion of Muslims and Islam across the world have only escalated to epidemic proportions. A narrative has been developed and peddled which associates Muslim communities and their religion with violence and danger,” said Zardari, who is also chair of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation Council of Foreign Ministers.

“This Islamophobic narrative is not just confined to extremist, marginal propaganda, but regrettably has found acceptance by sections of mainstream media, academia, policymakers and state machinery,” he added.

Csaba Korosi, president of the UN General Assembly, pointed out that Islamophobia is rooted in xenophobia, or the fear of strangers, which manifests in discriminatory practices, travel bans, hate speech, bullying, and other forms of abuse.

He urged countries to uphold freedom of religion or belief, which is guaranteed under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

“All of us carry a responsibility to challenge Islamophobia or any similar phenomenon, to call out injustice and condemn discrimination based on religion or belief – or the lack of them,” he added.

Korosi said education is crucial to understanding why these phobias exist and can transform how people perceive each other.

On March 15, 2022, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution by consensus which was introduced by Pakistan on behalf of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation that proclaimed March 15 as “International Day to Combat Islamophobia.” The date was chosen as it is the anniversary of the Christchurch mosque shootings, in which 51 people were killed.
