China warns AUKUS: You’ve gone down a ‘dangerous road’ with nuclear subs deal

The United Kingdom, the United States and Australia have “gone further down a wrong and dangerous road” with their nuclear submarines agreement, a spokesperson for the Chinese foreign ministry said Tuesday.

The agreement “completely ignored the concerns of the international community,” Wang Wenbin said at a press briefing, according to CNN.

The deal will “stimulate an arms race, undermine the international nuclear non-proliferation system and damage regional peace and stability,” he added.

On Monday, U.S. President Joe Biden announced his intention to sell five nuclear-powered submarines to Australia, after meeting with the British and Australian prime ministers at a naval base in San Diego, California.

The move is part of the broader “AUKUS” alliance, which aims at strengthening the U.S., British and Australian presence in the Indo-Pacific — mostly to counter the rise of China in the region.

Asked Monday if China would consider the submarines deal as an act of aggression, Biden said “no,” according to Reuters.

Responding to the remarks for the Chinese foreign ministry, a spokesperson for U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said Tuesday: “The AUKUS program is not about any one country.”

  • Iran-Saudi Agreement: Why Israel Opposition Sees It A ‘Dangerous Development’?

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: As expected, the Tehran-Riyadh restoration of ties with Beijing’s help has led triggered a serious debate the world over. With most of the countries supportive of the agreement, a general perception is that the USA, the world’s most powerful nation, has been side-lined by an emerging China.

US President Joe Biden with MbS of Saudi Arabia
US President Joe Biden with MbS of Saudi Arabia on July 15, 2022. They barely shook hands.

The most vociferous reaction has come from Israel where senior opposition leaders have termed the agreement Tel Aviv’s failure.

“The restoration of relations between the Saudis and Iran is a serious and dangerous development for Israel that represents an Iranian diplomatic victory. It represents a critical blow to efforts to build a regional coalition against Iran,” Naftali Bennett, Israel’s former Prime Minister was quoted as saying by Times of Israel. “This is a resounding failure of the Netanyahu government and is the result of a combination of diplomatic neglect, general weakness and internal conflict in the country.”

Bennett was not alone. Yair Lapid, also a former Prime Minister also termed the agreement as “a complete failure” for Israel, calling it “a collapse of our regional defensive walls that we had been building against Iran.”

Iran and Saudi Arabia, barely separated by a 150-mile distance were representing two extremes in the Middles East. They were literally rivals in most of the conflict areas in the region. Besides, they were using Shia-Sunni sectarianism as part of their foreign policy in other Muslim countries.

Iran and Saudi Arabia have agreed to resume diplomatic relations after four days of intensive previously undisclosed talks in Beijing.

Israel, it may be recalled here had normalised relations with Bahrain, Morocco and the United Arab Emirates in 2020. The agreement with Iran came as Tel Aviv was negotiating a relationship with Riyadh. While these efforts are likely to continue, the possibility of kicking Tehran out of the frame may not be possible. Israel sees Tehran as its enemy and dislikes its nuclear programme and Riyadh was almost thinking on the same terms. This had led to a sort of coalition with the Middle East excluding Iran. The agreement is expected to change that.

Israel apart, the response from almost every other power centre has been positive. Some Western countries including USA and France have responded to the development with a bit of caution.

“United Nations spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric expressed the gratitude of the United Nations Secretary-General to China for hosting the recent talks, and the United Nations Secretary-General welcomed the efforts of other countries in this regard, especially the Sultanate of Oman and Iraq,” Saudi Press Agency reported. “The UN spokesperson also stated that good neighbourly relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran are necessary for the stability of the Gulf region.”

In Brussels, the European Union (EU) has also welcomed the agreement.

“Generally speaking, we welcome any efforts to help end the war in Yemen and de-escalate tensions in the Middle East region. De-escalation and diplomacy together with deterrence are key pillars of the policy President Biden outlined during his visit to the region last year,” US NSA spokesperson John Kirby was quoted as saying. “The Saudis did keep us informed about these talks that they were having, just as we keep them informed on our engagements, but we weren’t directly involved.”

When asked by reporters, Biden said: “Better relations between Israel and their Arab neighbours are better for everybody.”

What is interesting, however, is that the agreement is being seen as a side-lining of the US in the region. A general impression is that the US was selling arms to fuel the conflicts in the region and, instead, China used trade to get the rivals closer.

Major Development: China Brokers Peace Between Iran and Saudi Arabia

The agreement is expected to have a cooling effect on at least three ragging conflicts in the region. In Yemen, Iran was supporting Houthi rebels and Saudi Arabi was funding the exiled government. In Lebanon, Iran was backing Hezbollah and Riyadh money was surviving the Sunni political class. The two countries were the proxy players in Suria where Iran supported President Bashar Assad and Riyadh was closer to the rebels.

Analysts believe t is too early to predict a major shift as the parties will have to work on the agreement. The divisive politics in the region has been played for such a long time that converting it into peace will take a long time. Those unhappy can contribute to making the agreement evaporate.

AAP alleges Sisodia kept with ‘dangerous’ criminals in Tihar jail

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Aam Aadmi Party on Wednesday expressed concerns over former deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia’s “safety” inside the jail and alleged that he was being kept with “dangerous” criminals, a charge denied by the prison authorities.

AAP national spokesperson Saurabh Bharadwaj alleged that Sisodia is being kept with other criminals in the Tihar Jail and has been refused “vipassana” cell.

He claimed that despite approval from the court, Sisodia has not been provided the “vipassana” cell.

“There was a request for Manish Sisodia to be kept in the vipassana cell of the jail and it was approved by the court. Despite the court’s approval, Sisodia has been kept with other criminals in jail number 1. The Centre must answer why are they doing this,” Bharadwaj said.

Senior AAP leader Sanjay Singh lashed out at the BJP and the Centre and alleged that they have been “misusing” central agencies such as the CBI and the ED.

“BJP and the Centre are full of hatred and they have been misusing the central agencies. Every other day there is news of CBI and ED raids on the opposition leaders. They (BJP) are least bothered about education, health, electricity, water and overall progress of the country,” Singh alleged.

He further alleged that Sisodia has been kept with “dangerous” criminals in the jail and that the party leaders have been “worried about his safety”.

Senior AAP leader Dilip Pandey claimed that court orders have been “defied” and Sisodia has been kept with criminals with “dangerous records” inside the Tihar Jail.

“First, Manish Sisodia was mentally tortured by the central agencies and then he has been kept in Tihar’s jail number 1 with criminals with dangerous records. He is also being pressured to sign the papers where false charges have been framed against him,” he alleged.

Rejecting the Aam Aadmi Party’s allegations as “unfounded”, the Delhi Prison authorities on Wednesday said Sisodia has been lodged in a ward of Central Jail No. 1 of Tihar where there are a minimum number of inmates and no gangsters.

In a statement, the prison authorities said, “Manish Sisodia has been assigned to a segregated ward keeping his security in mind. The ward…has minimum number of inmates who are not gangsters and are maintaining good conduct inside the jail.”

According to jail officials, a separate cell makes it possible for him to meditate or do such other activities without any disturbance.

“All the arrangements, as per jail rules, are in place to ensure his safety and security. Any aspersions cast about his lodgings is unfounded,” an official added.

Sisodia was arrested by the CBI in the excise policy scam case. He is currently in judicial custody.

Reacting to the allegations levelled by the AAP, BJP leader Manoj Tiwari charged that the AAP is “trying to mislead” the public as Tihar Jail comes under the Delhi government’s Department of Prisons.

  • ‘Old, rich and dangerous…’ Jaishankar takes on George Soros

‘Old, rich and dangerous…’ Jaishankar takes on George Soros

    [ad_1]

Sydney: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Saturday termed billionaire investor George Soros as an “old, rich opinionated person” who still thinks that his views should determine how the entire world works.

Addressing a session with Australian Minister Chris Brown at the Raisina@Sydney Dialogue , Jaishankar said,”Mr Soros is an old, rich opinionated person sitting in New York who still thinks that his views should determine how the entire world works…such people actually invest resources in shaping narratives.”

“People like him think an election is good if the person they want to see, wins and if the election throws up a different outcome then they will say it is a flawed democracy and the beauty is that all this is done under the pretence of advocacy of open society,” the external affairs minister said.

Soros had in his remarks at the Munich Security Conference this Thursday said, “Adani is accused of stock manipulation and his stock collapsed like a house of cards. Modi is silent on the subject, but he will have to answer questions from foreign investors and in Parliament.”

Terming Modi and Adani as “close allies,” whose “fate is intertwined”, the 92-year-old billionaire investor said, “This will significantly weaken Modi’s stranglehold on India’s federal government and open the door to push for much-needed institutional reforms.” “I may be naive, but I expect a democratic revival in India,” Soros said in his remarks delivered at the 2023 Munich Security Conference.

In Sydney, Jaishankar today said, “When I look at my own democracy, I’ve today a voter turnout, which is unprecedented, electoral outcomes which are decisive, electoral process which is not questioned. We’re not one of those countries where after elections, somebody goes to arbitrate in court.”

“Mr Soros said India is a democratic country but he doesn’t think the Prime minister of India is a democrat. He earlier accused us of planning to strip millions Muslims of their citizenship which of course didn’t happen, it was a ridiculous suggestion,” the external affairs minister said.

Globalisation, Jaishankar said, allows seamless opportunities but also allows narratives to be shaped, money to come in, and organisations to get about their agenda.

“All this is done under the pretence of advocacy of open society of transparency, etc,” he said.

Hitting out at Soros’ comments, Jaishankar said, “If you do this kind of scaremongering…millions of people will be deprived of citizenship. It actually does real damage to the societal fabric because somebody out there believes you. You create that kind of fear psychosis.”

Meanwhile, BJP lashed out over Soros’ comments. Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, Union Minister of Women and Child Development Smriti Irani on Friday slammed Soros said that the man who broke the Bank of England and a man, who is designated as an economic war criminal, has now expressed his desire to break the Indian democracy.

She added that Soros wants a government that is pliable to his needs for making his nefarious plans successful.

“It is evident from his statements that he has pronounced funding over one billion dollars to target leaders like PM Modi. This is significant,” The Minister said during the conference.

She said, “Those who support Soros need to know that democracy has prevailed in India and continues to do so and as a party worker of the BJP, I can say that these designs to weaken Indian democracy will be met by the might of India under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.”

Election Commission’s decision dangerous for democracy: Uddhav Thackeray

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray on Friday described as dangerous for democracy Election Commission’s decision to recognise Eknath Shinde faction as real Shiv Sena.

“They (Eknath Shinde faction) have stolen our bow and arrow symbol, but people will avenge this theft,” Thackeray told reporters at his Matoshree bungalow in suburban Bandra.

Claiming that there was no democracy left in India, Thackeray said PM Modi should declare that dictatorship has started in the country.

“We will challenge in Supreme Court poll panel’s decision to recognise Eknath Shinde faction as real Shiv Sena,” he said. The EC decision is very dangerous for democracy, he added.

The EC decision indicates that the Mumbai municipal corporation elections will be declared soon, he said.
