Congress MLC alleges large-scale corruption in Dalit Bandhu scheme

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Congress MLC Jeevan Reddy has made serious allegations of large-scale corruption in the implementation of the Dalit Bandhu scheme. Reddy accused BRS MLAs of receiving funds from the scheme’s beneficiaries and called for action against them. Despite media reports on this issue, Chief Minister KCR has not taken any action against the MLAs. Reddy revealed that the Chief Minister himself had warned the MLAs who received funds for the Dalit Bandhu scheme in the plenary session of the BRS. Reddy has accused KCR of trying to shield the guilty MLAs and doing injustice to the Dalit community.

Addressing the media, Jeevan Reddy stated that the Dalit Bandhu scheme, which was intended to benefit the Dalit community, had been badly affected by corruption. He alleged that the MLAs were adding their names to the list of beneficiaries to receive funds. The Congress MLC further alleged that KCR was trying to protect the MLAs, despite the Chief Minister’s admission that the MLAs were receiving funds from the scheme’s beneficiaries.

Jeevan Reddy pointed out that Dr Rajaiah was sacked as Deputy Chief Minister on corruption charges, but MLAs receiving funds from Dalits were being shielded. He accused KCR of showing no fear among the MLAs and said that the Chief Minister would be directly responsible for any irregularities in the Dalit Bandhu scheme.

The Dalit Bandhu scheme was launched by the Telangana government with the objective of empowering Dalit families in the state by providing them financial assistance to start their own businesses. The scheme was announced ahead of the Huzurabad assembly by-elections, which took place last year.

Jeevan Reddy’s allegations of corruption in the scheme have caused a stir in the state’s political circles, with many demanding a thorough investigation into the matter. It remains to be seen what action the Telangana government will take in response to these allegations.

BJP MP Laxman attacks KCR on silence over release of convict who killed Dalit bureaucrat

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: BJP leader K Laxman on Friday found fault with Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao for allegedly not responding to the release of former Bihar MP Anand Mohan Singh, who was convicted in the 1994 murder of an IAS officer from Telangana.

The Rajya Sabha MP termed as ‘shameful’ Rao not responding to the Bihar government’s decision to release the convict in the killing of G Krishnaiah, who hailed from Mahabubnagar.

Laxman, who is also National President of BJP’s OBC Morcha, said intellectuals, Dalit associations and all those who want democracy to triumph should condemn the decision of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

The former chief of BJP Telangana unit, in a tweet, sought to know whether Chandrasekhar Rao would still be politically friendly with Nitish Kumar.

Reacting to the release of Anand Mohan, Laxman said, “I strongly, condemn the release of Anand Mohan who was sentenced to life imprisoned for the murder of Bihar IAS officer G Krishnaiah who hails from the Dalit community in Telangana.”

“Will KCR still be politically friendly with Nitish Kumar now or will he stand with the Krishnaiah’s family to ensure justice for the brave son of Telangana?,” he asked in a tweet.

Gangster-turned-politician Anand Mohan Singh, who was serving a life sentence, was released from Saharsa jail in Bihar on Thursday morning after being behind bars for 15 years.

The former Bihar MP was released under a jail sentence remission order after the Nitish Kumar government’s recent amendment of prison rules which allowed the early release of 27 convicts, including him.

Singh was convicted for his role in the 1994 murder of the then Gopalganj collector G Krishnaiah during the funeral procession of Muzaffarpur gangster Chotan Shukla.

TN: Stalin moves resolution to bring Dalit Christians under Scheduled Castes

    [ad_1]

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin introduced a motion in the Assembly on Wednesday seeking to include Dalit Christians into the purview of the Scheduled Castes (SC) quota, stating that doing so will allow them to benefit from social justice in all aspects.

“This august House urges the Government of India to make necessary amendments to the Constitution to extend statutory protection, rights and concessions including reservation as provided to the people belonging to Scheduled Castes under the Indian Constitution, also to the Scheduled Castes who have converted to Christianity, so as to enable them to avail the benefits of social justice in all aspects,” the resolution moved by Stalin read, reported Deccan Herald.

The resolution comes at a time when the Union Government is opposed to granting quota privileges to Dalits who have converted to Christianity or Islam.

In December 2022, the Centre informed the Supreme Court that it was unwilling to execute the recommendations of the Justice Ranganath Misra Commission for Religious and Linguistic Minorities that Dalits who converted to Christianity and Islam be granted quota.

The Centre has also formed a commission to investigate the subject, led by former Chief Justice of India Justice K G Balakrishnan. While Dalits who are Buddhists or Sikhs are eligible for SC reservation advantages, those who converted to Christianity or Islam are not.

  • UP BJP to invoke ‘guesthouse incident’ to woo Dalit voters

UP BJP to invoke ‘guesthouse incident’ to woo Dalit voters

    [ad_1]

Lucknow: In the run-up to next year’s Lok Sabha elections, the ruling BJP in Uttar Pradesh is set to invoke the infamous “guesthouse incident” of 1995 to woo Dalits.

The UP BJP’s Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes Morcha will run a three-week statewide campaign starting on Ambedkar Jayanti (April 14) to remind the Dalit community how BJP members “rescued” Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati from workers of Samajwadi Party that day.

The incident led to years of bitterness between Mayawati and the SP, and the BSP supremo even mentioned the 1995 episode recently in response to overtures made by SP president Akhilesh Yadav to the Dalit community.

    MS Education Academy

In 1995, SP workers reportedly laid siege to the state guesthouse in Lucknow, when Mayawati was holding a meeting with her party MLAs in a room after indications from her that the BSP was quitting the alliance with the SP. BJP leader Brahmadutt Dwivedi is believed to have protected Mayawati from SP workers who had reportedly gone on the rampage.

“We will start a campaign on the birth anniversary of Babasaheb Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar on April 14 and tell Dalits how BJP members rescued Mayawati from SP workers during the guesthouse incident. This campaign will continue till May 5,” UP BJP Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes Morcha chief Ram Chandra Kanojia said on Wednesday.

“During the incident in 1995, our leader Brahmadutt Dwivedi reached the spot and rescued Mayawati,” he told PTI.

The BJP’s move comes after an important meeting of BSP held in Lucknow on April 2-3 and SP chief Yadav unveiling the statue of BSP founder Kanshi Ram in Rae Bareli on Monday.

Opposition parties have said that instead of starting this campaign, the ruling party should work to stop the atrocities against Dalits in the state.

SP’s national general secretary Swami Prasad Maurya took a jibe at the BJP’s proposed campaign, saying, “In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, SP and BSP have forgotten all the previous things and entered into an alliance. Now, what does the BJP want to achieve by digging up dead bodies.”

He alleged, “No reservation is being given in recruitments. If the BJP is such a well-wisher of Dalits and OBCs then why it is playing with the reservation.”

Congress spokesperson Surendra Rajput said that instead of running such a campaign, the BJP should stop the atrocities on Dalits.

“A Dalit girl was raped in Hathras and after her death, her body was forcibly cremated by the administration,” he said, in a reference to allegations over an incident that took place in 2020.

“Apart from this, there have been many incidents of atrocities against Dalits in Lakhimpur Kheri, Gonda and Banda, but the BJP never talks about them,” Rajput alleged.

Dalit intellectuals hail KCR for installing 125-foot statue of Ambedkar

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Dalit intellectuals have hailed the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) government of Telangana for installing a 125-foot statue of Dr B.R. Ambedkar.

The University Grants Commission’s (UGC) former Chairman Prof Sukhadeo Thorat and other intellectuals visited the statue which is coming up near Hussain Sagar in the heart of Hyderabad and is scheduled to be unveiled on April 14, the birth anniversary of Ambedkar.

They were all praise for Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao for paying fitting tribute to the architect of the Indian Constitution by installing his tallest statue.

    MS Education Academy

The statue has come close to the newly-built state Secretariat which has also been named after Ambedkar.

A thanksgiving ceremony was held in the city by various Dalit organizations to thank the Chief Minister for naming the Telangana secretariat after Ambedkar and also for installing a 125-foot statue.

Leaders of Prabuddha Bharat International, Samata Sainik Dal, SC, ST Officers Forum and others attended the meeting.

Thorat said he was feeling proud to be a part of this thanksgiving ceremony. He appreciated KCR, as the Chief Minister is popularly known, for naming the secretariat and installing a statue as a fitting tribute to Ambedkar.

    K. Srinivas, editor of Telugu daily Andhra Jyothi said Chief Minister KCR has done what no other Chief Minister could do.

Press Academy Chairman Allam Narayana said that one language and one state was the dream of Baba Saheb Ambedkar and KCR has made this come true by implementing the ideals mentioned in the Constitution.

Former Chief Secretary K. Madhav Rao said that Ambedkar sacrificed his life to bring all core values of humans on one platform.

Delhi Vasanth, Founder, Gramodaya Chamber of Commerce & Technology, said that Baba Saheb Ambedkar is truly the real father of the nation with his innovative ideas for uplifting the downtrodden.

He proposed auction of the thesis “Problem of Rupee” written by Dr Ambedkar as done earlier for Theory of Relativity of Albert Einstein.

Benjamin, Chairman of Saint Paul’s institutions came forward with initial bidding of Rs 1 crore. Vasanth said this process will go for 6 months, inviting different national heads and business heads to globalise the doctrine of “Problem of Rupee”.

  • Memoir of Dalit publisher-writer Yogesh Maitreya to release on April 22

Memoir of Dalit publisher-writer Yogesh Maitreya to release on April 22

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The memoir of Yogesh Maitreya, a leading independent Indian Dalit publisher, writer and poet, will hit the stands on April 22, announced Penguin Random House India (PRHI) on Sunday.

Encompassing experiences of pain, loneliness, depravation, alienation, and the political consciousness of his caste identity, the intimately moving memoir, “Water in a Broken Pot” is a story of “resilience and raw brutality”.

“It is a story of making pain look not absolute when dealt with determination, while searching for love and many meanings it contributes in our lives. This book is a promise we all must make to ourselves in the journey against the struggle of oppression,” said Maitreya, founder and editor of ‘Panther’s Paw Publication’ — dedicated to publishing literature by Dalit-Bahujan writers.

    MS Education Academy

Growing up in a working-class family with meagre wages to get by in life, Maitreya in the book writes of his father’s struggle against alcohol and passion for cinema; working day and night shifts in factories; the struggle of being lost, overlooked and unmentored in India’s schooling, college and University systems, exclusionary and hostile; and feelings of lovelessness, loss and heartaches.

Having hopped from gig to gig to make ends meet, the author shares his “eventual discovery of the written word, literature and the Ambedkarite legacy, which helped shape his dreams, identity and the eventual career choice of publishing books”.

According to the publishers, the fresh and radical voice of Maitreya “tells his truth in the most frank and unfiltered of ways”, giving the readers permission to also be vulnerable in telling their tales.

The book is endorsed by the likes of Padma Shri awardee, feminist writer and publisher Urvashi Butalia, and Hermann Kesten award recipient and poet Meena Kandasamy.

While Butalia called the memoir “unflinching” and “unsparing”, Kandasamy described it as a “masterpiece”.

Maitreya’s previously authored books include 2019’s “Flowers on the Grave of Caste”, a collection of short stories; “Singing/Thinking Anti Caste” (2021), a book of essays on music and memories; and “Ambedkar 2021” (2021), a book of prose poetry.

  • Akhilesh to unveil Kanshi Ram statue; set to strike at BSP’s Dalit base in UP

Akhilesh to unveil Kanshi Ram statue; set to strike at BSP’s Dalit base in UP

    [ad_1]

Lucknow: Having given up all hopes of an alliance with the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Samajwadi Party (SP) is now going all out to woo the Dalits.

The party will use the upcoming Ambedkar Jayanti to kick off its campaign.

SP president Akhilesh Yadav will unveil a statue of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) founder Kanshi Ram at a function in Rae Bareli on April 3.

    MS Education Academy

According to party sources, in his address, Akhilesh will recall BSP founder Kanshi Ram’s alliance with SP founder Mulayam Singh Yadav in 1993 and underline the need for another ‘coming together’ of the forces in the present political scenario.

SP national general secretary Swami Prasad Maurya said, “The BSP today has strayed away from the path shown by its founder Kanshi Ram and Babasaheb Ambedkar. There is an urgent need for the followers of Kanshi Ram and Mulayam Singh Yadav to join hands once again for nation building. It is time to carry forward their idea of social justice that the two leaders had first shared in 1993.”

According to sources, the SP leadership feels that an OBC-Dalit combination, in at least a dozen Lok Sabha constituencies, has the ability to be a game changer on the strength of its numbers.

In the political circles, the move is being seen as SP’s latest strategy to win over non-Jatav Dalits who had sided with the BJP in the 2022 Assembly polls and also make a dent in the BSP’s Jatav vote base.

The party’s broad frame of this strategy was also noticeable in the recently constituted national executive committee of the party. Where 62 members in the committee — around 35 per cent — were from non-Yadav OBC communities particularly from electorally influential communities like Pasi, Kurmi, Rajbhar and Nishad.

A total of six members in the national executive committee list were Dalits.

Besides, of late, Akhilesh has been seen making a conscious effort to promote Ayodhya MLA Avadhesh Prasad as the Dalit face of the party.

The nine-term MLA, who currently represents the Milkipur Assembly constituency of Ayodhya, not only shares a seat next to party president Akhilesh Yadav in the state Assembly but was also seen sharing the dais with Yadav during the two-day party’s national executive meet in Kolkata recently.

Akhilesh even tweeted a selfie with Awadhesh Prasad and Shivpal Yadav on board a flight to Kolkata, to underline the growing stature of the Milkipur MLA in the party.

His rising stature in SP is being seen as Akhilesh’s attempt to send across the message that the party is willing to give a special status to Dalits — who were till now seen as a dedicated and exclusive voter base of the Bahujan Samaj Party.

The SP, which had floated Babasaheb Vahini on Ambedkar Jayanti in 2021, now plans to strengthen the organisation within the party.

The Vahini has been asked to celebrate Ambedkar Jayanti in a grand manner in all districts.
