  • Air pollution, fast food causing rise in asthma cases in Kashmir: DAK

    [ad_1]

Srinagar, May 2 (GNS): On World Asthma Day, Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) on Tuesday expressed concern over rise in asthma cases in Kashmir.

“Air pollution and fast food are causing spike in asthma cases in the valley,” said DAK President Dr Nisar ul Hassan in a statement issued to GNS.

Dr Hassan said the air quality in Kashmir has been constantly deteriorating for the past few years due to the increasing number of vehicles, construction, brick kiln, cement and other factories which emit pollutants and significantly pollute our air.

“And this is behind rising cases of asthma in the valley,” he said.

“A study published in British Medical Journal has found that children exposed to higher levels of environmental pollutants are more likely to develop asthma compared to children who were not exposed,” DAK President said.

“The research showed that for every 5µg-per-cubic-meter increase in concentrations of air pollutants, there was about a 4 or 5% increase in asthma.”

“Not just what you breathe, what you eat puts you at risk of developing asthma,” he said.

“According to a study children and teenagers are nearly 40% more likely to have asthma if they eat fast food more than three times a week.”

Dr Nisar said over the years fast food has largely replaced homemade meals in Kashmir. Children and teens are often seen taking fast foods like burgers, pizzas, French fries and noodles.

“This change in dietary habits from homemade to processed and convenient foods could be another reason for rise in asthma cases,” he said.

“There is an urgent need to control environmental pollution to save people especially younger generation from the disease.

We need to educate parents to encourage their children to eat healthy and avoid fast foods,” he added.(GNS)

  • Junk food behind fatty liver epidemic in Kashmir: DAK

    [ad_1]

Srinagar, Apr 19 (GNS): On World Liver Day, Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) on Wednesday expressed pressing concern over surge in fatty liver disease which has reached to epidemic proportions in Kashmir valley.

“Junk food is causing spike in fatty liver cases in the valley,” said DAK President Dr Nisar ul Hassan in a statement issued to GNS.

Dr Hassan said junk food has become routine part of people’s lives and has largely replaced homemade meals. Fast food is the quickest meal not just for busy professionals, but there is a rising trend of fast food among children and teenagers. They are often seen eating fast foods like pizzas and burgers. Children are addicted to chips, sugary drinks and frozen ready meals.

“This change in dietary habits from homemade to processed and convenient foods is the primary factor contributing to enormous burden of fatty liver in Kashmir,” he said.

The DAK President said according to a new study from the University of Southern California’s Keck school of Medicine published in clinical gastroenterology and hepatology, junk food has been found to cause fatty liver disease.

“If you are obese or diabetic, fast food has even more negative impact on the liver and can lead to even higher amounts of fat in the liver,” he said.

Dr Nisar said one in three persons in Kashmir have fatty liver and young people are mostly hit.

The prevalence of disease is 60-70% among diabetics and obese individuals.

He said non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is a life threatening disease in which fat builds up in the liver. It is the commonest cause of cirrhosis or scarring of liver which can cause liver failure and even cancer.

People with fatty liver have a greater chance of developing cardiovascular disease.

“In order to prevent this disease, we need to go back to our culture of taking homemade meals and avoid junk food. We need to be on roads and gyms rather than in luxury cars,” he said.

“Every year on April 19 World Liver Day is observed to spread awareness about the importance of liver health and educate people on how to maintain a healthy liver,” he added.(GNS)

DAK Seeks Immediate Release of GMC Employees Salary

Srinagar, Mar 10 : Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) on Friday sought immediate release of salary of Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar employees.

“It is unfortunate that the employees of GMC Srinagar are without salary for the last five months,” said DAK President Dr Nisar ul Hassan in a statement issued to GNS.

Dr Hassan said due to the non-payment of wages, employees and their families face immense hardships.

“They are not able to pay school fee of their children and can’t even buy their daily medicines. The employees are having a difficult time to even a daily bread,” he said.

The DAK President said the wages of employees have been withheld on the pretext that the employees have not uploaded one of their promotion orders on JKRM portal.

“The verification and updating of service records on portal is the responsibility of college authorities,” he said.

“Employees are working round the clock in hospitals and they should get their salaries. You can’t deny wages of hospital employees who put in their blood and sweat under difficult conditions to save sick and wounded,” said Dr Nisar.

“It is difficult for employees to work without salary and without wages they can’t deliver their services efficiently which adversely affects patient care,” he said.

Dr Arshad Ali General Secretary DAK said GMC employees are agitating for the last two days demanding the release of their salary.

“Government should redress their genuine demand immediately so that patient care doesn’t suffer,” he said. (GNS)

  • Junk food, sedentary lifestyle pushing more children towards obesity in Kashmir: DAK

    [ad_1]

Srinagar, Mar 4 (GNS): On world obesity day, Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) on Saturday expressed pressing concern over rise in the number of obesity cases among children in Kashmir valley.

“Junk food and sedentary lifestyle are pushing more children towards obesity,” said DAK President Dr Nisar ul Hassan.

According to a latest survey by National family Health Survey (NFHS-5), Kashmir has registered an increase in the percentage of obesity among children.

The number of overweight children increased from 2.1 percent in NFHS-4 survey conducted in 2015-16 to 3.4 percent in NFHS -5 which was conducted in 2019-20.

Dr Hassan said one big factor for this spike is junk food which has largely replaced homemade meals.

Children are often seen taking fast foods like burgers and pizzas.

They are addicted to chips, sugary drinks and frozen ready meals.

“Television advertisements targeting children and junk foods being sold in school cafeterias are shifting dietary habits of children from healthy food to processed food,” he said.

He further said with high dependency on smartphones, we are increasingly witnessing children leading to sedentary lifestyle.

“And physical inactivity is also contributing to spike in obesity cases among young ones,” he said.

The DAK President said childhood obesity has been linked to health conditions like Diabetes, Asthma, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, high cholesterol, joint problems and liver disease.

“Many of these health conditions had only been seen in adults, now they are extremely prevalent in overweight children,” he said.

“Obesity is becoming a major health crisis. We need to do more to raise awareness and encourage action towards its elimination,” said Dr Nisar.

He said it is vitally important to educate parents to prevent their children from becoming obese.

They have to encourage them to eat healthy and take up some sport in leisure time.

“Preventing obesity helps protect your child’s health now and in the future,” he added. (GNS)

Junk Food And Sedentary Lifestyle Behind Increasing Childhood Obesity In Kashmir: DAK

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: The Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) has expressed concern over the increasing number of obesity cases among children in the Kashmir valley. On World Obesity Day, Dr Nisar ul Hassan highlighted that junk food and a sedentary lifestyle are the primary factors contributing to this issue. According to the latest National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5), the percentage of obesity among children in Kashmir has increased from 2.1% in NFHS-4 (conducted in 2015-16) to 3.4% in NFHS-5 (conducted in 2019-20).

Dr Hassan emphasized that the shift towards junk food, which has replaced homemade meals, is a major contributing factor. Children are consuming fast food like burgers, pizzas, chips, sugary drinks, and frozen ready meals. He also highlighted that television advertisements targeting children and junk food sold in school cafeterias are promoting unhealthy dietary habits. Furthermore, high dependency on smartphones has led to children leading sedentary lifestyles, which is another contributing factor.

Childhood obesity has been linked to several health conditions such as diabetes, asthma, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, high cholesterol, joint problems, and liver disease. Dr Nisar stressed the need for parents to encourage their children to adopt healthy eating habits and participate in sports during leisure time to prevent obesity. • DAK Warns Against Excessive Use Of Earphones On World Hearing Day

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: On world hearing day, Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) on Friday warned against excessive use of earphones.

“Overuse of earphones at higher volumes over prolonged period of time can result in hearing loss,” said DAK President Dr Nisar ul Hassan.

Dr Hassan said the younger generation is particularly vulnerable because they are glued to their personal listening devices like earphones, headphones and earbuds.

They plug these devices into their smartphones and listen to many hours at volumes exceeding the safe limit.

“Young people often choose volumes as high as 105 decibels,” he said

“The safe sound levels are around 85 decibels for adults and 75 decibels for children.”

The DAK President said more people are coming with hearing issues due to the overuse of earphones and headphones.

“Today’s earphone users are going to be tomorrow’s hearing aid users,” he said.

“According to a study published in the Journal BMJ Global Health, one billion young people are potentially at risk of hearing loss due to their excessive use of headphones and earbuds.”

Dr Nisar said hearing is the sense that connects us to the people.

Taking care of our hearing is key to maintaining healthy relationship(s) and general health and well-being.

He said there is an urgent need to prioritize safe listening practices to safeguard aural health

It is always preferable to avoid earphones, but those who need them should take precautions.

“Limit the usage time, keep the volume low and take breaks,” he said

“Every year on March 3, world hearing day is observed to raise awareness on ways of preventing deafness and promoting aural care through safe listening,” he added.

  • DAK condemns Pulwama Councilor’s Alleged Misbehavior with Doctor

    [ad_1]

Srinagar, Mar 1 (GNS): Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) on Wednesday condemned in strongest words the ‘misbehaviour of Pulwama councilor with a doctor’.

The councilor is alleged to have used demeaning, abusive and unparliamentary language with the doctor while he was discharging his duties.

“Such behavior is simply unacceptable,” said DAK President Dr Nisar-ul-Hassan in a statement issued to GNS.

Dr Hassan said on Monday evening, the councilor entered into district hospital Pulwama and threatened and abused the doctor on duty which resulted in disruption of medical services.

“Such acts of intimidation against medical staff that provide help to sick and wounded is shocking,” he said.

The DAK President said medical personnel put in their blood and sweat to save lives in extremely difficult conditions and instead of appreciation get abuses.

“The act of hooliganism from a public representative has generated fear and anxiety among health care workers,” he said.

Dr Nisar said under such circumstances doctors cannot deliver their services efficiently which adversely affects patient care.

“It is difficult for doctors to work under such hostile conditions,” he said adding “such atrocious attitude towards doctors has forced many to migrate and this is the main reason for brain drain.”

General Secretary DAK Dr Arshad Ali said such maltreatment with a doctor on duty will not only set a bad precedent but will also demoralize the medical staff who are discharging their duties in toughest circumstances.

“There has to be an end to this mad pattern of atrocities against medical staff which has become a routine,” he added. (GNS)
