Rishi Sunak expands role of UK pharmacies to cut GP waiting times

    [ad_1]

London: British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who worked in his mother’s pharmacy as a young boy growing up in Southampton, was back in his hometown on Tuesday to unveil plans for an expanded role for pharmacists to cut down long wait times for patients wanting to see a general practitioner (GP).

The 42-year-old British Indian leader had his blood pressure checked at Weston Lane Surgery in the south-east England port city and got a clean chit as he spoke to reporters about the initiative to cut down waiting lists for the state-funded National Health Service (NHS), one of his government’s top priorities. Patients with minor ailments like earache and sore throat would now be encouraged to go directly to their pharmacist, freeing up GPs for more serious illnesses.

“By expanding the role of pharmacies, fewer people will need to see their GP in the first place,” said Sunak.

    MS Education Academy

“Today’s plans are expected to free up around 15 million GP appointments over the next two years for patients who need them most. Which means the next time you want to see your GP, you should be able to do so quicker,” he said.

Sunak branded his plans as a “bold and innovative package” of measures to significantly change how the NHS works and also tackle the “frustrating” 8 am local time call to a GP practice to get an appointment for the day.

“We will end the 8 am rush by making sure patients are either given an appointment immediately when they call or signposted to a more appropriate service such as NHS 111 or their local pharmacy. You will no longer be told to call back later,” said Sunak.

Cutting down on NHS wait times made worse as a result of the COVID pandemic, was among Sunak’s five key pledges at the start of this year. According to him, transforming primary care is the next part of this government’s promise to cut NHS waiting lists.

NHS chief executive Amanda Pritchard said the reforms would “help us to free up millions of appointments for those who need them most, as well as supporting staff so that they can do less admin and spend more time with patients”.

“We are already making real progress with 10 per cent more GP appointments happening every month, compared to before the pandemic. I want to make sure people receive the right support when they contact their general practice and bring an end to the 8 am scramble for appointments,” said UK Health Secretary Steve Barclay.

“To do this, we are improving technology and reducing bureaucracy, increasing staffing and changing the way primary care services are provided, which are all helping to deliver on the government’s promise to cut waiting lists,” he said.

An average-sized GP clinic in England of 10,000 patients often receives more than 100 calls in the first hour of every Monday. The UK’s Department for Health and Social Care said with advanced digital telephony, rather than an engaged tone, patients will receive a queue position, a call-back option, and their call can be directly routed to the right professional. The phone system will also be integrated with the clinical systems so practice staff can quickly identify patients and their information from phone numbers.

UK Minister for Health Neil O’Brien added: “Where GPs have already moved over to these new technologies, we see they free up the phones, making it much easier for people to get through to their general practice team.”

“As well as being more convenient for patients, these really easy-to-use digital tools allow a lot of patients to get the help they need without ever needing to go in for an appointment, which will help cut waiting lists. Investing GBP 240 million in these modern tools and the help GPs need to move onto them will make things more convenient for patients, but also make the workload more manageable for general practice teams,” he added.

Top CEOs received 9% pay rise in 2022, employees took 3% pay cut

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Leading CEOs globally, including India, received a real-term 9 per cent pay rise in 2022, while workers worldwide took a 3 per cent pay cut during the same period, a report showed on Monday.

Around 150 of the top-paid executives in India received $1 million on average last year, a real-term pay rise of 2 per cent since 2021.

A single Indian executive makes just four hours more than an average worker earns in a year.

    MS Education Academy

Employees on average worked six days “for free” last year because their wages lagged behind inflation — while real pay for top executives in India, the UK, the US and South Africa jumped 9 per cent (16 per cent if not adjusted for inflation), reveals new analysis from Oxfam released on the International Workers’ Day.

One billion workers in 50 countries took an average pay cut of $685 in 2022, a collective loss of $746 billion in real wages, compared to if wages had kept up with inflation.

According to the report, women and girls are putting in at least 380 billion hours of unpaid care work every month.

Women workers often have to work reduced-paid hours or drop out of the workforce altogether because of their unpaid care workload. They also continue to face gender-based discrimination, harassment, and less pay for work of equal value as men, the findings showed.

“While corporate bosses are telling us we need to keep wages down, they’re giving themselves and their shareholders massive payouts. Most people are working longer for less and can’t keep up with the cost of living,” said Amitabh Behar, Oxfam International’s interim Executive Director.

Years of austerity and attacks on trade unions have widened the gap between the richest and the rest of the people.

“The only rise workers have seen is that of unpaid care work, with women shouldering the responsibility,” Behar said. “This incredibly hard and valuable work is done for free at home and in the community.”

Shareholder dividends meanwhile hit a record $1.56 trillion in 2022, a 10 per cent real-term growth compared to 2021.

“Workers are tired of being treated like sacrificial lambs every time a crisis hits. Neoliberal logic blames inflation on everyone except profiteering corporations,” said Behar.

Governments should stop relying only on interest rate hikes and austerity that we know hurts ordinary people, particularly those living in poverty.

Instead, they should introduce top rates of tax of at least 75 per cent on super-rich corporate bosses to discourage sky-high executive pay, and windfall taxes on excessive corporate profits, he mentioned.

  • EU environmental watchdog criticises calls to stall pesticides cut

EU environmental watchdog criticises calls to stall pesticides cut

    [ad_1]

The EU’s environmental watchdog has hit back at calls to stall a 50% cut in the use and risks of synthetic pesticides and a 20% cut in fertiliser use by 2030, arguing that the Ukraine crisis provides scant justification for delay.

EU states with the backing of powerful farm unions and centre-right parties have blocked the proposed pesticide reform unless the European Commission completes a second impact study by 28 June to assuage food security fears.

Among campaigners and scientists, anxieties are rife that the bloc’s flagship green farming pledge could be unceremoniously buried.

Dario Piselli, a European Environment Agency (EEA) expert and author of a new analysis published on Wednesday, said there were “compelling” reasons not to hesitate further with the draft law.

“There’s limited justification to use the war as a reason for postponing action,” he told the Guardian. “Food security as an issue is not only to do with immediate food supply – and a lot of the concerns there have subsided a bit compared to the beginning of the war – but with medium-long term security which is influenced by other things [like] climate change and the impact of a loss of biodiversity on food production.”

Since 1990, farmland bird and grassland butterfly populations have plunged by more than 30% in Europe, while almost one in 10 of the continent’s bees face extinction, mainly because of habitat loss caused by intensified agriculture.

In 2020, pesticide thresholds for human safety were breached at more than one in five rivers and lakes across Europe, the EEA paper says and 83% of agricultural soils tested in 2019 were also found to contain pesticide residues.

Almost the same percentage – 84% – of people tested across five European countries in 2021 were found to contain at least two pesticides in their bloodstreams, according to a large human biomonitoring study cited by the paper.

Environmentalists say this is partly down to increased pesticide sales volumes in the EU, which remained stable between 2011 and 2020 at about 350,000 tonnes a year, compared with annual averages closer to 220,000 tonnes between 1992 and 2003.

One EU country, Denmark, has cut sales by using pesticide taxes linked to product toxicity, but the commission does not expect the present modest rises in pesticide prices to affect demand.

By contrast, fertiliser sales in countries such as Germany have fallen by up to 40% after prices doubled between May 2020 and the end of 2022, owing to high gas costs and war-related supply disruptions.

One EU diplomat said this had caused “mixed feelings” in Europe’s capitals about the commission’s green farming reform. “Last year the Germans were desperate to push the proposal forward but how this will end up I don’t know,” the official said.

Another EU diplomat added: “If the pesticides regulation is dead, there is no one to blame but the commission itself. The moment it stepped away from a scientific and evidence-based approach in favour of ideology and dogmatic solutions, it condemned its flagship legal proposal.”

The commission’s targets for EU nations, which take into account actions already taken, would force Italy to cut its pesticide use and risks by 62%, Germany by 55% and France and Spain by 54%, according to a report in Politico.

Hostility to the measures is strong among Europe’s agricultural business class and in several governments, where the EU’s green deal commissioner, Frans Timmermans, is viewed darkly.

“Unless EU citizens suffer from hunger and protest in the streets, he does not care,” the first diplomat said.

In a concession to such sentiments, Brussels last year shelved a proposed ban on pesticide use in ecologically sensitive areas – so long as low-risk pesticides were used instead. But it will not abandon the goal of a less chemically drenched countryside, despite the “complex” impacts of the Ukraine conflict on food security, said Stefan De Keersmaecker, a commission spokesperson.

“We must continue making progress in the discussions so that the proposal can become a reality to protect farmers, pesticide users, citizens, vulnerable populations, and the environment,” he said. “European citizens have a clear desire to reduce the use and risk of pesticides.”

  • Inflation forces Greeks to cut back on coffee

Inflation forces Greeks to cut back on coffee

    [ad_1]

Athens: Meeting over a cup of coffee has long been an integral part of Greek culture. However, the inflationary pressure of the past year has forced 54 per cent of people to cut back on their caffeine habit, a recent survey has revealed.

Nevertheless, coffee consumption remains high, Ioannis Benopoulos, president of the Hellenic Coffee Association, told Xinhua news agency.

On an average, Greeks consume 4 kg of coffee — traditional Greek coffee, instant coffee or espresso — per capita annually, Benopoulos said.

    MS Education Academy

Greeks are among the world’s 20 biggest coffee drinkers, according to the International Coffee Organization (ICO).

“Coffee consumption in Greece today is one of the most deeply ingrained habits … At least eight out of ten of those surveyed said that they drink coffee daily,” Benopoulos said.

Seven out of ten coffee lovers drink more than two cups per day and would not replace coffee with any other drink, according to a survey carried out by Kapa Research.

In Greece, people drink coffee in practically all social settings. It is an excuse for getting together with relatives, co-workers or friends.

“Going out for coffee, that we are quite used to doing in our country. This special habit is inextricably linked to our culture. It is no coincidence that four out of ten respondents said that cutting back on coffee consumption would equal limiting social interactions,” Benopoulos said.

However, faced with soaring inflation amidst the energy crisis and the Russia-Ukraine war, many Greeks started ditching the idea of sitting in coffee shops or restaurants over a cup of coffee, the survey showed.

Some respondents opted for the more economical solution of takeaway or making coffee at home.

The year-on-year rate of inflation in the country hit a 30-year record high of 12-plus per cent last June, the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) said.

The rate was 9.3 per cent for the whole year, according to the Bank of Greece’s latest estimates.

“The increase in raw material and energy prices has also affected the price of coffee sold in coffee shops,” coffee shop owner Giorgos Karamanidis told Xinhua.

Data for August 2022 showed that the price of coffee in the European Union (EU) was on average 16.9 per cent higher than in August 2021, according to Eurostat, the bloc’s statistical office.

In 2022, Greek shop owners saw the price of sugar double within a year.

In June 2022, electricity prices were 70.4 percent higher than in the same month of 2021, ELSTAT said.

Although inflation slowed to 4.6 per cent in March this year compared to March 2022 as a result of lower energy prices, many coffee drinkers seem to still think twice before indulging in meeting a friend at a cafe.

Karamanidis said that 20 per cent more of his customers choose takeaway as an option.

Either way, for many Greeks, coffee remains one of their last affordable daily “luxuries”, he said.

Oil prices surge after OPEC+ announce to cut output

    [ad_1]

Moscow: The Oil prices have surged and surpassed USD 85 per barrel after several oil producer countries announced surprise cuts in production, TASS Agency reported.

According to the Russian News Agency, this is the first time since March 7 that the price of futures contracts of Brent crude oil surged.

The price of futures contracts of Brent crude oil for June 2023 delivery on London’s ICE surpassed USD 85 per barrel.

    MS Education Academy

As of 1:09 am Moscow time on Monday, the price of Brent oil went up by 6.43 per cent to USD 85.03 per barrel, according to TASS Agency.

By 1:12 am (Local Time), Brent was trading at USD 85.41 per barrel (6.46 per cent). The price of futures contracts of WTI crude oil for May 2023 delivery went up by 6.21 per cent, to USD 80.37 per barrel.

Earlier, the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) Plus oil producers announced further output cuts of around 1.16 million barrels per day.

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia’s capital and main financial hub said it would cut output by 500,000 barrels per day, or BDP, from May until the end of 2023, state media reported.

In a statement carried out by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), the Saudi official emphasised that this is a precautionary measure aimed at supporting the stability of the oil market, according to Emirates News Agency.

This voluntary cut is in addition to the reduction in production agreed upon during the 33rd OPEC and non-OPEC Ministerial Meeting, held on 5th October 2022.

The move came as a surprise as OPEC Plus said that they did not intend to make any changes in their policies but this announcement blew everyone, The Washington Post reported.

The alliance produced nearly two million barrels below its supply target in February, the last month for which official output figures are available. “We expect shortfalls to continue,” said Ha Nguyen, a global oil analyst for S and P Global Commodity Insights.

There have been persistent reports that Russia is struggling to keep up production without the benefit of Western service companies that have wound down their operations since the Russian invasion of Ukraine more than a year ago.

Saudi production has also been below its production quota set by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries in recent months, reported The Washington Post.
