Excise scam: Court extends Manish Sisodia’s judicial custody till May 23

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: A Delhi court on Monday extended AAP leader and former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia’s judicial custody till May 23 in connection with the Delhi excise policy case being investigated by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

The ED has alleged that Sisodia was the mastermind behind the entire excise policy case and that he had deliberately leaked the policy to the co-accused to generate financial kickbacks.

Sisodia is currently in judicial custody.

The ED had arrested Sisodia on March 9 after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested him on February 26 this year.

Last month, Special CBI Judge M. K. Nagpal of Rouse Avenue Court had denied bail to Sisodia, holding that the evidence, prima facie, “speaks volumes” of his involvement in the offence.

Last week, High Court judge Dinesh Kumar Sharma sought the ED’s response to Sisodia’s bail plea and another application seeking interim bail on the ground of his wife’s ill-health and listed the matter for further consideration on May 11.

In the case being probed by the CBI, Delhi court extended Sisodia’s judicial custody till May 12

Delhi court extends Sisodia’s ED custody in excise policy case

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: A court here on Saturday extended former Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi, Manish Sisodia’s custody till May 8 in connection with the excise policy case being investigated by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

On Friday, Special Judge M.K. Nagpal of the Rouse Avenue Court had denied bail to Sisodia holding that that the evidence, prima facie, “speaks volumes” of his involvement in commission of the offence.

The judge had also said that the purported medical condition of Sisodia’s wife was not a reason to grant him bail in this case.

    MS Education Academy

Additionally, he stated that it was impossible to rule out the potential of Sisodia influencing key witnesses in the case.

The judge noted that the alleged offence against Sisodia was a “serious economic offence of money laundering” and that he has not been accused of committing the offence in his personal capacity, but rather in his official capacity as a public servant overseeing the Excise Ministry and serving as Delhi’s Deputy Chief Minister.

On Thursday, the same court extended Sisodia’s judicial custody till May 12, in the case being probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The ED had earlier submitted before the judge that Sisodia had planted fabricated emails to show that there was public approval for the policy.

The directions to send these pre-drafted emails were given to Zakir Khan, Chairman of Delhi Minorities’ Commission, who then asked his interns to send the emails, the ED claimed.

The probe agency had also said that the 60 days given to complete the investigation against Sisodia are not over yet.

It said that it has found fresh evidence indicating Sisodia’s involvement in the alleged scam, and the investigation is at a crucial stage.

Vivekanand murder: CBI custody of Kadapa MP’s father ends

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday completed questioning of Kadapa MP Y.S. Avinash Reddy’s father Y.S. Bhaskar Reddy and their follower Uday Kumar Reddy in former minister Y.S. Vivekananda Reddy’s murder case.

After six days of questioning, the CBI presented the two before a court and they were later shifted back to Chanchalguda Jail.

The CBI court had sent them to six-day custody of the central agency last week.

    MS Education Academy

Bhaskar Reddy was arrested by the CBI on April 16 while his follower Uday Kumar Reddy was arrested on April 14 in Pulivendula town of Kadapa district in Andhra Pradesh. Both were brought to Hyderabad where a court sent them to judicial custody.

Meanwhile, the CBI is also reported to have recorded the statement of former Superintendent of Police of Kadapa, Rahul Dev Sharma. The CBI officials are believed to have collected vital information from him about the case. He was Kadapa SP when Vivekananda Reddy was murdered in 2019.

The agency last week also questioned Rajasekhar Reddy, husband of Vivekananda Reddy’s daughter Suneetha Reddy.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court on Monday set aside the Telangana High Court granting protection to Kadapa MP Avinash Reddy from arrest till April 25.

The apex court pronounced the order on Suneetha Reddy’s petition. A bench comprising Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud and Justice P.S. Narasimha also extended the deadline for completing the investigation into the case till June 30.

The Supreme Court had earlier fixed April 30 as the deadline for the CBI.

Avinash Reddy, cousin of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Redddy, appeared before the CBI as per the interim order of the Telangana High Court on his anticipatory bail petition.

Vivekananda Reddy, brother of former chief minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, and uncle of Jagan Mohan Reddy, was murdered at his residence in Pulivendula on March 15, 2019, weeks before the elections.

The 68-year-old former state minister and former MP was alone at his house when unidentified persons barged in and killed him.

The CBI took over the investigation into the case in 2020 on the direction of Andhra Pradesh High Court while hearing a petition of his daughter Suneetha Reddy, who raised suspicion about some relatives.

Delhi court grants transit custody of Lawrence Bishnoi to Gujarat ATS

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Delhi’s Patiala House Court on Monday granted transit custody of jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi to the Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) in connection with a cross-border smuggling case.

The agency wants to question Bishnoi about any possible ties to Pakistan because it believes there is a chance that his associates are involved in cross-border smuggling of drugs and weapons.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) had already zeroed in on Bishnoi for his possible links to anti-Indian elements in Pakistan.

    MS Education Academy

Bishnoi was also involved in cross-border drugs trafficking and a Nigerian woman was working for him, claimed the Gujarat ATS, which now wants to interrogate the gangster in connection with the Al-Tayyasa boat matter in which 38.994 kg heroin worth Rs 194.97 crore was recovered from the Mitha Port in Gujarat.

“Six Pakistani nationals who were on board the boat were held. Later, it was learnt that the consignment was sent for Bishnoi by Pakistan-based handlers under the supervision of a Nigerian woman. Calls were made from Punjab jail. While two of the accused have been interrogated, we want to quiz Bishnoi for which his production warrant is being sought,” a source said earlier.

UP: Local Cong leader taken into police custody for placing tricolour on Atiq’s grave

    [ad_1]

Prayagraj: Local Congress leader Rajkumar Singh Rajju was taken into custody by the police on Wednesday after he allegedly placed the tricolour on the grave of gangster-politician Atiq Ahmad, calling him a “martyr”.

The Congress expelled Rajju, who was a candidate in the upcoming urban local body polls, from the party for six years, its city president Pradeep Mishra Anshuman said.

Anshuman said that Rajju was a Congress candidate for corporator from Azad Nagar in South Malaka.

A purported video of the incident went viral in which Rajju can be seen placing the tricolour on the Ahmad’s grave and raising slogans in favour of Ahmad and his brother Ashraf and demanding Bharat Ratna for the former MP.

“He was a people’s representative and a martyr. Why he was not given state honour and why the tricolour was not put on his grave,” Rajju said, according to the purported video.

Anshuman claimed to have a photo of Rajju receiving the award from state’s Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya and said whatever happened was a conspiracy.

Rajju is undergoing treatment for some psychiatric issues, he said, adding a prescription for psychiatric medicines were found at his home.

Dhoomanganj police station SHO Rajesh Kumar Maurya said Rajju has been detained and an FIR is being registered against him.

Excise policy scam: Delhi court extends Sisodia’s judicial custody by 2 weeks

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: A court here on Monday extended former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia’s judicial custody by two weeks in connection with the excise policy case being investigated by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

Before the bench of special judge M.K. Nagpal of the Rouse Avenue Court, the ED had earlier submitted that Sisodia had planted fabricated e-mails to show that there was a public approval for the policy.

“We have evidence that Sisodia had e-mails planted. These have been received not only in the official e-mail account of the Excise Department but even in his personal e-mail account. The content of the e-mails was given by Sisodia which suited his agenda,” the counsel for the ED had told while opposing the bail plea.

    MS Education Academy

“Fabricated e-mails were sent to show that there was a public approval of the policy. This is a sham approvala Illegal ecosystem was created to give benefits to the liquor cartels in lieu of kickbacks.”

The ED’s special public prosecutor Zoheb Hossain had then told the judge that the agency wanted to show him the case diary.

To this, Sisodia’s counsel had said that it should not be done so in secrecy.

“Sealed cover business should go. If something is used against me to deny me my libertya If they are relying on something behind my backa It should be put to me as well,” the counsel said.

However, the probe agency said that the 60 days to complete the investigation against him are not over yet.

The ED said: “We will put it to you after 60 days.”

The court then adjourned the hearing in bail matter for Tuesday.

On April 5, the ED had informed Judge Nagpal that it has found fresh evidence indicating Sisodia’s involvement in the alleged excise scam, and the investigation is at a crucial stage.

The court had extended AAP leader’s custody till April 17 in this case.

On March 21, Sisodia had moved a plea seeking bail plea in ED’s case.

After the CBI arrested the AAP leader on February 26, the ED also arrested him in the same case on March 9.

The probe agency had earlier claimed that within a span of one year, 14 phones have been destroyed and changed, and that Sisodia has been evasive from the start.

2 weeks before killing, Atiq moved SC for protection in UP police custody

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Two weeks before gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmad was shot dead while under police escort in Prayagraj, the Supreme Court had dismissed his plea seeking protection during his custody with the Uttar Pradesh Police in the Umesh Pal murder case.

Ahmad (60) and his brother Ashraf were shot dead at point-blank range by three men posing as journalists in the middle of a media interaction on Saturday night while police personnel were escorting them to a medical college for a checkup.

On March 28, the apex court had dismissed Ahmad’s plea for protection and observed that the Uttar Pradesh state machinery would take care of his protection in case of a threat to his life.

    MS Education Academy

When Atiq’s plea had come up for hearing before the top court, a bench of Justices Ajay Rastogi and Bela M Trivedi granted him liberty to approach the Allahabad High Court for protection after he had claimed that his life was under threat while being in the custody of the Uttar Pradesh Police.

“Since he is in judicial custody, the Uttar Pradesh state machinery will take care of his protection in case of threat to his life,” the court had said, refusing to record the former Samajwadi Party MP’s counsel’s vehement requests that his life is under threat.

“It is not a case where this court is going to interfere. Liberty granted to move appropriate application before the high court. Whatever is the process prescribed under law will be followed,” the bench had said.

Atiq had sought protection claiming that he and his family have been falsely “roped in” as accused in the Umesh Pal murder case in Prayagraj.

Umesh Pal, a key witness in the 2005 killing of then BSP MLA Raju Pal, and his two security guards were killed in a shooting on February 24.

In his plea, Ahmad, who was earlier lodged at the Ahmedabad central jail in Gujarat pursuant to the apex court’s direction, had referred to the statement made by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on the floor of the assembly to “completely ruin and destroy” him and claimed there is a “genuine and perceptible threat” to his and his family members’ lives.

Prayagraj: Uttar Pradesh Police on Thursday brought Mafia-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf to Dhoomanganj Police Station in Prayagraj after Prayagraj Chief Judicial Magistrate court sent them to four-day police custody.

The police custody of the duo started from 5 pm on April 13 till 5 pm on April 17.

Earlier Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf were brought to the CJM Court in Prayagraj on Thursday morning.

    MS Education Academy

The Uttra Pradesh Police chargesheet filed before the court mentioned a recorded statement of Atiq Ahmed.

“…I have no dearth of weapons because I have direct connections with Pakistan’s ISI and terror organisation Lashkar-e-Taiba. Weapons from Pakistan are dropped on the Punjab border with the help of drones and local connection collects them. Terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir get weapons from this consignment. If you take me with you, I can help you recover that money and arms and ammunition used in the incident,” the chargesheet said citing Atiq.

Meanwhile, Atiq Ahmed’s son Asad and his aide Ghulam, both of whom were wanted in the Umesh Pal murder case, were killed in an encounter by Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) in Jhansi on Thursday.

Each of them carried a reward of Rs 5 lakhs. The police said that foreign-made weapons were recovered.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday chaired a high-level meeting on ‘law and order’ after the killing of Asad and Ghulam in an encounter.

CM Yogi also lauded the 12-member STF team which was involved in the shootout.

On March 28, Atiq Ahmed was convicted by an MP-MLA court and sentenced to rigorous life imprisonment in the abduction case of now-deceased Umesh Pal.

Atiq Ahmed and his family came under the scanner in the Umesh Pal murder case.

Atiq Ahmed, who has over 100 cases against him over the last 43 years, has been convicted in the same case.

Umesh Pal, a key witness to the murder of Bahujan Samaj Party leader Raju Pal and one of his two armed security escorts was shot dead in Prayagraj’s Sulem Saray area on February 24. Several rounds were fired and bombs were hurled at Umesh and his gunners.
