No formal discussions at ICC board meet on Pakistan playing World Cup games in Bangladesh

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: ICC sources on Wednesday dismissed speculations about Pakistan playing their World Cup matches in Bangladesh instead of India due to the political tension between the two countries, terming it a “figment of imagination”.

The rebuttal came after reports that discussions were held during the recent ICC board meeting in Dubai about Pakistan possibly playing their league games in Bangladesh.

“No one knows if PCB chief Mr Najam Sethi has had any informal discussion with his Bangladeshi counterpart Najmul Hasan Papon but this can be said with a degree of certainty that no such discussions happened officially that Pakistan will play in Bangladesh,” an ICC board source privy to the developments told PTI on the condition of anonymity.

The source did point out that procurement of visas was an issue that was discussed and, contrary to conjectures made from the PCB’s part, the Indian cricket board has assured of all assistance.

“The BCCI has categorically said that there will be no problems with procurement of visas. One of the main points for a host country is that all participating nations will be given visas on time. From ICC’s part, Bangladesh is not even in its scheme of things as a co-host as of now,” the source said.

“Suppose Pakistan reach the semi-finals or win to play the finals, do they expect the matches to be played in Bangladesh. This is not a theatre of absurd happening,” the board member added.

The top brass in BCCI circles understands that this is a pressure put by the PCB to host the entire Asia Cup in Pakistan, which isn’t being looked upon as a feasible solution.

“We understand that this is a kind of pressure tactic applied by PCB because of the Asia Cup issue. But let me tell you, ultimately, Asia Cup will also be played in UAE or Qatar and probably Pakistan will also have to play its matches in one of these countries,” a BCCI source said.

Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chairman and BCCI secretary Jay Shah has already made it clear that India is not travelling to Pakistan for the Asia Cup and that it will be held at a neutral venue.

“As far as Pakistan playing its Asia Cup games in Pakistan is concerned, the budget for the tournament is passed by the Asian Cricket Council. If ACC says that it’s not a commercially viable proposition to hold Asia Cup in two countries, how can Pakistan play its games at home. ACC, for all you know, might not pass the budget,” a board source said.

  • Pakistan May Not Play Its 2023 ODI World Cup Games In India: Report. This Is The Likely Venue

Pakistan May Not Play Its 2023 ODI World Cup Games In India: Report. This Is The Likely Venue

    [ad_1]

New Delhi, Mar, 29: With the confusion over where Indian cricket team and Pakistan cricket team over where the two sides might play in the Asia Cup, ESPN Cricinfo has reported a fresh development on the World Cup front. The ODI ICC World Cup is being held in India in October-November. According to the report, Pakistan could play its matches in Bangladesh. “The idea has been discussed at the ICC level,” the report claimed. This reported development comes as a hybrid model is coming up as an option for host venue of the Asia Cup.

Also, Wasim Khan, former CEO of the Pakistan Cricket Board and the current General Manager of Cricket for the International Cricket Council (ICC) in an interview with ARY News claimed that Pakistan might also play their World Cup matches at a neutral venue.

“I don’t know if it would take place in a different country but a neutral venue is highly likely,” said Wasim on a question regarding the likely neutral venue for India’s Asia Cup fixtures.

“I don’t think that Pakistan will play their matches in India. I think their matches will also be held at a neutral venue just like India’s Asia Cup matches,” Wasim added.

Pakistan were initially announced as the Asia Cup hosts. However, in October, 2022, the Pakistan Cricket Board was caught off guard by BCCI secretary Jay Shah, who stated that India would not travel to Pakistan for the 2023 Asia Cup and that it would be held in a “neutral” venue. The PCB, under the then chairman Ramiz Raja, promptly responded and said that any such development might impact their plans to travelling to India for the World Cup.

Since then a stalemate has been there regarding the Asia Cup. According to report by news agency ANI, the Asia Cup 2023 is likely to be held in Pakistan, but India will play their games at a neutral venue. After a brief stalemate, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) are working quickly to broker a compromise that could result in both teams playing their tournament matches against one another outside of Pakistan. India are likely to play their Asia Cup 2023 matches in either England, Oman, Sri Lanka or UAE.

“A meeting between the boards had been done a few days back and the tournament will be allowed to be held in Pakistan. India will play their matches at a neutral venue and will not travel to Pakistan, the venues where India could play their matches are likely to be Oman, UAE, England, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Though the decision will be decided later,” a source told ANI.

The foreign location is still to be determined, although the UAE, Oman, Sri Lanka, and possibly England are viable candidates to host India’s matches, including at least two matches between India and Pakistan. The neutral venue is not confirmed but the UAE, Oman, Sri Lanka and even England are potential contenders. If India book their place in the Asia Cup final, the summit clash will take place at a neutral venue.

Today, Slovenia is a superpower in ski jumping, but it was not visible in the ski jump. There was hardly anyone in the actual stands. After all, there was a group standing next to the descent slope.

    Planica

I ski The World Championships had a humor day on the program on Sunday, but it wasn’t funny at all. The day was filled with doubles and mixed team competitions in each of the three sports, which don’t want to fire up the athletes as much as the spectators.

    Mikko Gynther

If this is the future the International Ski Federation wants to take the event towards, the picture is bleak.

The people on the spot voted with their feet, what they thought of the competition format. During the skiing pair sprints, the atmosphere was still moderate, but right after that the fans’ march started. It was not directed towards the stands, but towards the pleasure substances or out of the entire area. It was a sight that the organizers do not want to show on television.

Only a handful stayed to watch the combined mixed team competition organized for the first time. The occupancy rate of the beer and food tent next to the stadium was significantly higher. Of course, it is understandable that if the alternatives are drinking beer and watching couple antics, the choice of many is the first.

In Planica, the value competition drug has not peaked, but Sunday was already somewhat low. Most of those in the stands and along the route had an accreditation or VIP tag hanging from their necks or wore a ribbon from their country’s ski association. Those who showed up for money were few, if not even in the minority.

The competition itself was as relaxed as the atmosphere. Only eight countries participated. The differences were shocking, even though the ski runs were made as short as possible.

Many looked like they would have rather been anywhere else than competing on the ski slopes. The clear number one name in the sport Jarl Magnus Riiber anchored Norway at the end of a leisurely run to the finish line as the winner. He looked as happy as he did a year ago, when he found out about his corona infection, which ruined the Olympic trip.

Even the Norwegian fans couldn’t get excited about the championship.

The “culmination” of the evening was the mixed team hill. Today, Slovenia is a superpower in ski jumping, but it was not visible in the ski jump. There was no one in the actual stand. After all, there was a group standing next to the descent slope.

The average gross salary of Slovenians is well over 2,000 euros. You had to shell out at least 64 euros for the Sunday day ticket. It allowed you to get miles away from the competition venue, as cars are not allowed in the stadium. Accessibility is poor, and there are no large masses of people living in the surrounding areas. I would have thought that even the most inexperienced event organizer would have realized that this equation does not work.

  • Women’s T20 World Cup: It’s a pretty special effort from the group, says Meg Lanning

Women’s T20 World Cup: It’s a pretty special effort from the group, says Meg Lanning

    [ad_1]

Cape Town: After winning the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup for a record sixth time, Australia captain Meg Lanning acknowledged her side for putting in a ‘pretty special effort’, which saw them go undefeated throughout the tournament, including beating South Africa in the final by 19 runs.

“It’s a pretty special effort from the group. All teams came hard at us – we knew that was going to happen. But we performed well throughout the tournament, so super proud. We felt like it was a good score, but we had to bowl well.”

“The wicket wasn’t as good as it was in the semi-final. We felt confident if we could hit the right lengths and target the stumps. We had to put pressure on South Africa,” said Meg after the match ended.

With the title win at Cape Town, Meg also overtook Ricky Ponting for captain with the greatest number of ICC titles. She had previously captained Australia to 2014, 2018 and 2020 T20 World Cup wins and 2022 ODI World Cup title, apart from a gold medal in the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

“We knew it would be an amazing atmosphere, which it was. It was a great event. It was about keeping things simple when the pressure is on, and getting things done. Nice to finish off with a win with this group. It’s a special group. Not just the players, but also the support staff that put in a lot of work behind the scenes, and allow us to go out and play our cricket,” she added.

The 2023 Women’s T20 World Cup victory came after Meg returned to the sport after a five-month break. Co-incidentally, the victory at Cape Town was Meg’s 100th T20I as captain of Australia. Beth Mooney, Player of the Match in the final with a breezy 74, was thrilled to have Meg, also her coffee and game-day breakfast buddy, back to playing the sport.

“When Meg retires – hopefully not for a few more years, hope you’re listening Meg – she’ll go down as one of the greatest leaders, not just in cricket but in sport and just generally as well. She’s got an immense cricket brain.”

“She’s cool, calm and collected under pressure and she’s got empathy as well, she understands how people feel in certain situations because she’s been there before and she’s experienced a lot as a person and as a leader and as a cricketer. Absolutely she’ll go down as one of the greatest ever for our team and we’re very lucky to have her.”

  • Hayley Raso at the double as Matildas overcome sluggish start at Cup of Nations

Hayley Raso at the double as Matildas overcome sluggish start at Cup of Nations

    [ad_1]

The Czech Republic have a habit of holding highly ranked sides to 0-0 draws. Last year they did it to the United States and England, the world’s No 1 and 4 respectively. What do Australia have that they – arguably two of the World Cup favourites – do not? Nothing at all before half-time, and after that quite a bit of Hayley Raso, a little bit of Sam Kerr and a record-breaking Clare Polkinghorne, with the help of some well-used substitutes.

What a 4-0 win means for the Matildas in the next six months is completely open to interpretation, so difficult is it to glean meaningful takeaways from friendly tournaments such as the Cup of Nations. This one, being in a World Cup year, has been dressed up as a practice run for the real thing in July. Tony Gustavsson will not stop saying “rehearsal” and “tournament mode” – he may well have been muttering these words into his ever-present headset on the sideline.

The Czech Republic, Spain and Jamaica were all strategically picked for these home matches because their playing styles are similar to those of Australia’s World Cup group-stage opponents the Republic of Ireland, Canada and Nigeria. The defensive-minded, structurally organised Czechs in this scenario are supposed to be Canada. The same Canada to whom Australia lost two friendlies last year.

On the evidence of Thursday night, it is unclear how they will fare against them when it counts. Glass-half-full observers will reference figurative cobwebs being blown out after a few months apart followed by a confidence-boosting second half. The less optimistic will attempt to place this performance into a wider context, in which the Matildas are ranked 12th in the world and face a tricky knockout-stage draw, and point out that some of the Czech Republic’s strongest players did not travel. Others will remember the Socceroos did what nobody believed they could.

The truth is that nobody knows, because recent results have been so capricious. Just when you think Gustavsson will rue the day he threw on a second-string side and copped seven goals against Spain, he oversees convincing wins over Sweden and Denmark. The same occurred at Central Coast Stadium; one begins to analyse an opening 45 minutes during which Australia spent the first half with a hell of a lot of ball but nothing to show for it, and then they go and score four after the break.

    Sam Kerr nets Australia’s third.

What can be written, and then underlined and highlighted, is that Raso is a gun. The winger, quietly spoken off the field, has a brilliant “what do you think you’re looking at?” quality while on it. She threw herself into everything, as part of an interchanging role with Cortnee Vine, in the manner of a player with a point to prove to Manchester City manager Gareth Taylor, who has played her only sparingly off the bench these past few months.

It was apparent when, 20 minutes in, she made a dart for the box and went down under Gabriela Šlajsová’s stuck-out foot, ensuring a yellow card for the latter. Also three minutes into the second half when, with Kerr’s final pass behind her, she managed to contort her body into a shooting position and score the opener – partly thanks to a fortuitous deflection. And again seven minutes later when her header, from one of Steph Catley’s characteristically reliable set pieces, confirmed her brace.

The missing piece of that goal’s puzzle is the player who nodded the ball to Raso from the far post. Clare Hunt was a bolter in this squad, a reward for consistent form for Western Sydney Wanderers, and made herself known from the off. The same can be said for Alex Chidiac, who announced her arrival soon after with two involvements in the build-up to Kerr’s goal. Before the match Gustavsson referenced this, saying: “It’s not just about the starting XI, it’s about the finishing XI as well. What you will see in this tournament is similar to what we’ve seen in the last couple of camps, that hopefully we score a lot of goals when game changes come in.”

    skip past newsletter promotion

This was a night to celebrate for Polkinghorne, too, even though she had been on the field from the start with the armband. The 34-year-old appears very much a defender en route to her fifth World Cup, and scored one of her own just as she became Australia’s most-capped international with 152 appearances, surpassing Cheryl Salisbury.

The Czech Republic did not qualify for the World Cup but they scared Australia’s defence in the first half despite having less than 30% possession. Mackenzie Arnold was called into action to stop a long-range strike from Anna Dlasková, and again after some serious route-one football when the Wanderers’ Jitka Chlastáková ran onto Miroslava Mrázová’s headed flick-on which came straight from a goal kick. In all their defence was stubborn, and in the end the Matildas broke it down. Maybe that is all we need to know.
