US NSA meets Saudi Crown Prince, Indian and Emirati counterparts

    [ad_1]

Washington: US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan met the Saudi Crown Prince and his Indian and Emirati counterparts in Saudi Arabia during which they discussed bilateral and regional matters and their shared vision of a more secure and prosperous Middle East region interconnected with India and the world.

The meeting took place in Jeddah on Sunday, the White House said.

“National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan met with Saudi Prime Minister and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, UAE National Security Advisor Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and National Security Advisor of India Ajit Doval on May 7 in Saudi Arabia to advance their shared vision of a more secure and prosperous Middle East region interconnected with India and the world,” the White House said Sunday in a readout of the meeting.

“Sullivan also held bilateral meetings with the Crown Prince, Sheikh Tahnoon, and Mr Doval to discuss bilateral and regional matters. He looks forward to further consulting with Mr Doval on the margins of the Quad Summit later this month in Australia,” the White House said.

This is the first meeting between Doval and Sullivan after they launched the ambitious India US ICET (Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technology) dialogue here in January. Sullivan is currently travelling to Saudi Arabia.

With Crown Prince Mohammed, Sullivan reviewed significant progress in talks to further consolidate the now 15-month-long truce in Yemen and welcomed ongoing UN-led efforts to bring the war to a close, as well as covering a range of other issues.

“The four delegates agreed to maintain regular consultations and follow up on the matters discussed throughout the day,” the White House said.

The state-run Saudi Press Agency (SPA) on Monday reported the meeting between Sullivan and Crown Prince in Jeddah.

They discussed Saudi-US strategic relations and how to enhance them in various fields, as well as regional and international developments of common interest, the SPA reported.

Separately, the Crown Prince held another meeting with the deputy ruler of Abu Dhabi Sheikh Tahnoun and Indian national security adviser Doval, which Sullivan and the US delegation also attended, it said.

SPA reported that the meeting involved discussions of ways to strengthen ties between the respective countries in a manner that would enhance the growth and stability of the region.

Meanwhile, Axios, a Virginia-headquartered news company, reported that the US, Saudi, Emirati and Indian national security advisers were to discuss a possible major joint infrastructure project to connect Gulf and Arab countries via a network of railways that would also be connected to India via shipping lanes from ports in the region.

The project is one of the key initiatives the White House wants to push in the Middle East as China’s influence in the region grows, the report said. The Middle East is a key part of China’s ambitious Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) vision.

Launched in 2013 by President Xi Jinping, the BRI is a vast collection of development and investment initiatives that have been planned to link East Asia and Europe through physical infrastructure, significantly increasing China’s economic and political influence across the world.

A US official had said the project would be one of many topics discussed during the visit.

The idea for the new initiative came up during talks held over the last 18 months in another forum called I2U2, which includes the US, Israel, the UAE and India, the report quoted two sources as saying.

The forum was established in late 2021 to discuss strategic infrastructure projects in the Middle East.

“Nobody said it out loud but it was about China from day one,” a former senior Israeli official directly involved in early discussions on the issue told Axios.

Israel raised the idea of connecting the region through railways during the I2U2 meetings over the last year. Part of the idea was to use India’s expertise on such big infrastructure projects, the former Israeli official said.

The Biden administration in recent months expanded on the idea to include Saudi Arabia’s participation.

The initiative would include connecting Arab countries in the Levant and the Gulf via a network of railways that will also connect to India through seaports in the Gulf, the sources said.

The Indian, Emirati and Saudi embassies in Washington did not respond to requests for comment, Axios said.

Sullivan hinted at this initiative during his speech on Thursday at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy. “If you remember nothing else from my speech, remember I2U2, because you will be hearing more about it as we go forward,” he said.

Sullivan added the fundamental notion is to connect South Asia to the Middle East to the US “in ways that advance our economic technology and diplomacy.” He also said a number of projects are already underway “and some new exciting steps that we’re looking forward to undertaking in the months ahead.” Sullivan said in his speech that one of the pillars of the Biden administration’s strategy in the Middle East is regional integration.

Israel is not part of this initiative at the moment, but could be added to it in the future if efforts to further normalise relations in the region make progress, the source said.

King Charles III wears St Edward’s Crown for coronation

    [ad_1]

London: King Charles III, who was officially crowned on Saturday alongside Queen Camilla, wore St Edward’s Crown for the historic coronation ceremony.

The 74-year-old royal was officially crowned the UK’s monarch at Westminster Abbey. His Majesty’s coronation will be a historic occasion, but he has been monarch of the UK since September 2022.

King Charles III was crowned with St Edward’s Crown, the Metro newspaper reported.

    MS Education Academy

It is tradition for the monarch to wear the solid gold St Edward’s Crown often dubbed the centrepiece of the Crown Jewels at the moment of coronation, the report added. It was worn by the King’s late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, during her own coronation in June 1953.

And by the King’s late grandfather, King George VI, at his coronation in May 1937.

The crown dates back hundreds more years to 1661 when it was made for King Charles II.

In December 2022, St Edward’s Crown was removed from its place among the Crown Jewels in the Tower of London to undergo modification work’ ahead of the coronation.

It is topped with an orb and a cross, symbolising the Christian world, and made up of a solid gold frame set with rubies, amethysts, sapphires, garnet, topazes and tourmalines.

It has a velvet cap with an ermine band, the Sky News reported. And in February 2023, Buckingham Palace confirmed that work was complete and the crown was back at the Tower of London.

During the coronation, the King will also wear the Imperial State Crown. One of the Crown Jewels’ best-known pieces, it was poignantly featured among the regalia placed on the late Queen’s coffin during lying-in-state and funeral proceedings.

It is also present during every State Opening of Parliament.

This crown dates back to 1937 and was made by jewellers Garrard & Company for the coronation of George VI. It was also worn by Elizabeth II towards the end of her coronation, as it is lighter to wear than St Edward’s Crown, the report added.

Queen Camilla was crowned with Queen Mary’s Crown, but reset with the Cullinan III, IV and V diamonds.

Gilded carriages, crown jewels polished up for King Charles III’s Coronation

    [ad_1]

London: Charles, who acceded to the British throne on the passing of Queen Elizabeth II in September last year, will be formally crowned King at a solemn religious ceremony at Westminster Abbey in London on Saturday, last seen 70 years ago for his late mother.

Over 7,000 troops have been rehearsing into the early hours of the day in preparation for one of their most historic royal duty to date to line up the procession route for the gilded horse-drawn carriage of Charles, 74, and Camilla, 75, to be ridden from Buckingham Palace for their Coronation.

While Saturday’s ceremony will include many similar elements from Queen Elizabeth II’s crowning in June 1953, there are several crucial changes not least the cut-size congregation of 2,200 as compared to 8,000 of the past, as a nod to Charles’ sustainable outlook in the face of a cost-of-living crisis facing the country.

    MS Education Academy

The many multi-faith elements incorporated into the Christian ceremony are also reflective of his more modern touch.

“It is my prayer that all who share in this service, whether they are of faith or no faith, will find ancient wisdom and new hope that brings inspiration and joy,” said Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury, who will be presiding over the ceremony.

Britain’s first Hindu Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will read from the biblical book of Colossians soon after he and wife Akshata lead the host nation procession into the Abbey.

House of Lords peers who belong to different faith traditions of Sikhism, Hinduism, Judaism and Islam will present key Regalia to the King.

While Lord Indrajit Singh, 90, will represent the Sikh faith and present the Coronation Glove, Lord Syed Kamall, 56, of Indo-Guyanese heritage, will represent the Muslim faith and present the Armills or a pair of bracelets. Lord Narendra Babubhai Patel, 84, will represent the Hindu faith and hand over the Sovereign’s Ring to Charles.

India will be represented at the gathering by Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar and his wife, Dr Sudeep Dhankhar.

On Saturday morning, the King and Queen will travel from Buckingham Palace to the Abbey in the Diamond Jubilee State Coach created for Queen Elizabeth II to commemorate the 60th anniversary of her reign in 2012.

This horse-drawn carriage is the far more comfortable one of the two to feature in the two-way procession, including air-conditioning and shock absorbers. The less comfortable royal carriage, the ancient Gold State Coach, will be used for a shorter return journey from the Abbey to the palace.

The Gold State Coach was last seen during the Pageant of the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II in June 2022 and was commissioned in 1760.

The Coronation Regalia, the heart of the Crown Jewels which remain at the Tower of London for public display at all other times as a set of sacred and secular objects which symbolise the service and responsibilities of the monarch, will get their full ceremonial outing.

Charles will be crowned King as the St. Edward’s Crown is placed upon his head during the ceremony which will be made up of five key elements: the Recognition; the Oath; the Anointing; the Investiture and Crowning; and the Enthronement and Homage.

Camilla will be crowned with St. Mary’s Crown studded with Cullinan diamonds, having made the diplomatic choice to shun the customary crown embedded with the infamous Kohinoor diamond due to its colonial link with India.

While she will be “anointed” with holy oil in full public view, Charles will be anointed behind a cloth screen depicting a central design of a tree with branches filled with 56 leaves representing the Commonwealth of nations including one of the leaves dedicated to India.

The holy Chrism oil consecrated at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem will be symbolically touched to the monarch’s head, chest and hands as part of the religious ceremony.

Witnessing the solemn ceremony will be a congregation of 2,200 guests at the Abbey, including 850 representatives of charity and community groups as well as British Empire Medal (BEM) winners.

Among others of Indian heritage in the gathering will be British Indian chef and BEM winner Manju Malhi, who works with a senior citizens charity in the UK, will be among this group specially invited by the royal couple alongside worldwide royalty and Heads of State.

Also invited is Sourabh Phadke, a graduate of the Prince’s Foundation set up in Dumfries House, Scotland, by Charles as the Prince of Wales with a vision to provide holistic solutions to challenges facing the world. Gulfsha, winner of the Prince’s Trust Global Award and Indian-origin Jay Patel of Prince’s Trust Canada are also among the selected invitees.

Once back at the palace, the newly crowned King and Queen will receive a Royal Salute from the UK and some Commonwealth realm Armed Forces who would have been on parade that day.

They will then appear on the iconic balcony of Buckingham Palace to wave at gathered crowds and witness a Royal Air Force (RAF) flypast, that’s if the rain forecast for the day does not prove a washout for this colourful conclusion of the Coronation.

  • Netflix releases images of William and Kate in next series of The Crown

Netflix releases images of William and Kate in next series of The Crown

    [ad_1]

Netflix has offered the first look at a young Prince William and Kate Middleton in the new season of The Crown, which inches closer towards the present day.

The first images from the sixth and final season feature William and Kate holding hands, and are thought to be a depiction of the early days of their courtship as students at the University of St Andrews in Scotland.

Two other images show Kate looking up in a classroom, and William sitting on a brocade sofa in front of framed images, which suggest it may be someone’s home. It is expected that the two characters will play a prominent role in the latest instalment.

William has appeared in the series as a child, but the new series will depict him as an adult for the first time, played by newcomer Ed McVey. Kate will appear for the first time, and will be played by Meg Bellamy.

The Crown has become progressively more controversial as it has depicted more recent history, with some viewers complaining about its use of artistic licence.

This included Dame Judi Dench, who wrote a letter in the Times, which said “the closer the drama comes to our present times, the more freely it seems willing to blur the lines between historical accuracy and crude sensationalism”.

Dench added “significant number of viewers, particularly overseas, may take its version of history as being wholly true”.

Ahead of the fifth season, Netflix added a label underneath the trailer for the new episodes and on the show’s Twitter page, as well as on the Netflix site itself, clarifying that the series is a “fictional dramatisation”.

Netflix has yet to confirm when The Crown season six will premiere, but if it follows the same pattern as earlier seasons it may launch in November 2023.

The short video begins with a clip of the Dubai skyline along with some edited hot air balloons with the UAE flag and Dubai logo.

Using the Burj Khalifa – the world’s tallest building – as a backdrop, the video highlights those closest to Sheikh Hamdan through a series of family photos, a nod to the importance of their loved ones during the Eid celebrations.

Each picture shows Sheikh Hamdan with other members of his family, including pictures of his father, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai.

Another photo of the Crown Prince with his twins, Sheikh Rashid and Sheikha Sheikha, taken on the day of their birth.

Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz hold ‘positive’ meeting with Saudi Crown Prince

    [ad_1]

Islamabad: Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif and PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz on Friday met Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, according to a media report.

During the meeting, both sides discussed the current issues being faced by Pakistan and the solutions to them in detail, Geo News reported.

According to sources, the meeting between former Prime Minister Sharif and the Crown Prince was positive.

    MS Education Academy

Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz are currently in Saudi Arabia where they performed Umrah along with their other family members.

The Sharif family reached Saudi Arabia on April 11. The PML-N chief is visiting Saudi Arabia after six years, Geo News reported.

Sources told The News that Sharif had initially planned to stay in Saudi Arabia till April 26, but his son Hussain Nawaz and his family had requested him to prolong his stay in Jeddah at his residence.

According to sources, Sharif might also hold a meeting with the Custodian of the two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdul Aziz, in Jeddah.

Earlier this month, sources had claimed Saudi Arabia’s King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud invited Sharif who is considered closer to the royal family and Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to the Kingdom to perform Umrah as a gesture of goodwill, Geo News reported.

Shehbaz Sharif had told the lower house of the Parliament earlier this month that Saudi Arabia has provided another $2 billion to Pakistan in order to bolster the country’s foreign exchange reserves, The Express Tribune reported.

In January, Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff (COAS), General Syed Asim Munir, had met Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and reviewed bilateral relations between the two countries.

  • UAE Prez appoints Sheikh Khaled as Crown Prince, Mansour bin Zayed as VP

UAE Prez appoints Sheikh Khaled as Crown Prince, Mansour bin Zayed as VP

    [ad_1]

Abu Dhabi: Ten months after officially assuming the presidency of the country, United Arab Emirates (UAE) President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, in his capacity as ruler of Abu Dhabi, on Wednesday, issued a decree appointing his eldest son Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed as Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi.

UAE President issued a decree appointing his brother, Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed, as Vice President of the State, along with Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, with the approval of the Federal Supreme Council.

Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed also issued a new decree appointing his two brothers, Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed and Sheikh Hazza bin Zayed, as deputy rulers of Abu Dhabi.

In May 2022, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed assumed the presidency of the Emirates, succeeding the late Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed.

Who is Khalid bin Mohamed bin Zayed?

Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, born on January 8, 1982, is the eldest son of the President of the UAE and holds several positions, most notably Deputy National Security Adviser, Head of the State Security Apparatus in the Emirates, and Head of the Abu Dhabi Executive Office.

The new crown prince graduated from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom and served in the state security apparatus, and his name appeared on the political scene as head of the Supreme Council for National Security in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi in early 2010.

He assumed the presidency of the UAE State Security Agency and the position of Deputy National Security Adviser with the rank of Minister in 2016, heads the Abu Dhabi Executive Office, member of the Executive Council of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, Chairman of the Executive Committee, and Vice Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Committee for Strategic Affairs since 2019.

He also assumed membership in the Supreme Council for Financial and Economic Affairs, which supervises all economic assets of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, such as: “Mubadala”, “Holding”, “Abu Dhabi Investment Authority” and the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company “ADNOC” in the year 2021. He also became Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority on March 9, 2023.

Sheikh Khaled became involved in his father’s huge project aimed at diversifying Abu Dhabi’s economy through Hub71, or the technology ecosystem funded by Mubadala.

Who is Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed?

Mansour was born on November 20, 1970 in Abu Dhabi, and he is a prominent member of the ruling family in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, and one of the most prominent businessmen in the country.

Mansour is the son of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who served as ruler of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi between 1966 and 2004, and president of the United Arab Emirates between 1971 and 2004.

He held the position of Head of the Office of the President of the UAE between 1997 and 2004, and was Minister of Presidential Affairs in 2004.

Mansoor is best known for his activism in the financial field, heading several financial entities in Abu Dhabi, including the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, First Gulf Bank (now part of First Abu Dhabi Bank), and the International Petroleum Investment Company (now part of Mubadala Investment Company).

He served on the boards of several other entities, including the Supreme Council for Financial and Economic Affairs.

Mansour has many investments outside the UAE and is best known for his professional football projects abroad through his private investment company, Abu Dhabi United Group for Development and Investment, which bought a controlling stake in Manchester City Football Club in 2008, and the club quickly became one of the most successful teams in the world. English Premier League.

In 2013, Mansour became the main investor in New York City Football Club, and later bought shares in many other clubs around the world; Including majority stakes in Melbourne City in 2014 and Mumbai City in 2019.

According to Encyclopædia Britannica, Mansour has a quiet but important role in Emirati public policy as well. Apart from his work as Minister of Presidential Affairs, he headed the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department, which began overseeing the emirate’s judicial system in 2006.

    Tahnoun bin Zayed Al Nahyan

Sheikh Tahnoon, also one of the sons of Sheikh Zayed Al Nahyan, was born in 1971, and held the position of head of his father’s private department from 1996 until his death in 2004, then assumed the position of Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Presidential Flight Authority from 2009-2013.

    Tahnoun bin Zayed Al Nahyan

In January 2021, he was appointed president of “Group 42”, an Emirati company established in 2018 that specializes in artificial intelligence.

    Hazza bin Zayed Al Nahyan

Sheikh Hazaa is considered the fifth son of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and he was born in 1965. He studied and graduated from the United Arab Emirates University, the Faculty of Political and Administrative Sciences.

Hazaa moved between various positions in the Emirates, where he was one of the pioneers of the modern state, and this is evident from the positions he held.
