Fortune of world’s richest person Bernard Arnault crosses $200 bn for first time

    [ad_1]

London: The fortune of Bernard Arnault, the world’s richest person, has topped $200 billion for the first time as shares in his French LVMH luxury goods empire hit a record high, a media outlet reported.

The 74-year-old has become only the third person in history to amass an estimated fortune above the $200 billion. Tesla’s Elon Musk and Amazon’s Jeff Bezos have previously hit the milestone before their fortunes dropped back as technology companies share prices fell, The Guardian reported.

Arnault’s fortune increased by $2.4 billion on Tuesday to hit $201 billion, according to the daily-updated Bloomberg Billionaires Index. His wealth has increased by $39 billion so far this year as shares in LVMH have risen 30 per cent, thanks to soaring demand for luxury goods among the world’s wealthy.

The French billionaire is now $25 billion richer than Musk, whose fortune has been knocked by his $44 billion purchase of Twitter and a 50 per cent fall in the value of the electric car company Tesla over the past year. Musk is Tesla’s co-founder, chief executive and 13 per cent shareholder.

Bezos, who was the first person to hit the $200 billion milestone in August 2020, is currently the world’s third-richest person, with a $128 billion fortune, The Guardian reported.

Arnault is the chairman and chief executive of LVMH, which owns Louis Vuitton, Christian Dior and Moet & Chandon champagne. Its shares have shot up by more than 150 per cent in the past three years, hitting a new high of 853 euro on Wednesday morning.

LVMH last year achieved record sales of 79.2 billion euro and has begun a 1.5 billion euro share buyback programme, which has helped further lift the share price.

Arnault, who co-founded the luxury goods group 35 years ago and is its majority shareholder, has recently appointed his children to key roles within the business, the media outlet reported.

In January his eldest child, Delphine, was named the head of Christian Dior, the second-biggest brand in the empire. Her brother Antoine was promoted to run the holding company that controls LVMH and the Arnault family fortune.

Roughly one third of daily Bing preview users are using AI chat daily.

“We’re seeing on average, roughly three chats per session with more than 45 million total chats since the preview began,” Mehdi announced.

About 15 per cent of Chat sessions are people using Bing to generate new content demonstrating they are extending search to creativity, he said.

  • Turkey-Syria quake toll crosses 4300

    Turkey-Syria quake toll crosses 4300

    [ad_1]

Ankara/Damascus: The death toll due to the devastating earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria has increased to more than 4,300 as rescuers are racing against time to find more survivors amid heavy rain and snow in the two neighbouring nations, according to media reports.

As of Tuesday morning, the toll in Turkey stood at 2,921, while in Syria it increased to 1,451, the BBC reported.

According to Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), there were at least 15,834 injured persons, while 7,840 people were pulled alive.

The AFAD also noted that at least 5,606 buildings destroyed, adding that a total of 14,720 people are currently providing assistance in the disaster zone, including military personnel, reports Xinhua news agency.

The devastating 7.8 earthquake struck Turkey’s southern province of Kahramanmaras at 4.17 a.m. on Monday morning, which was followed by a 6.4-magnitude temblor a few minutes later in Gaziantep province.

The epicentre of the 7.8-magnitude quake was 23 km east of Nurdagi in Gaziantep, at a depth of 24.1 km, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.

At around 1.30 p.m, athird 7.5-magnitude tremor hit Kahramanmaras, which officials said was “not an aftershock”.

There were more than 60 aftershocks recorded throughout the day.

Meanwhile in Syria, of the overall toll, 711 deaths were recorded across government-controlled areas, mostly in the regions of Aleppo, Hama, Latakia, and Tartus, CNN quoted state news agency SANA as saying.

The “White Helmets” group, officially known as the Syria Civil Defence, reported 740 deaths in opposition-controlled areas.

Much of northwestern Syria, which borders Turkey, is controlled by anti-government forces amid the ongoing bloody civil war that began in 2011.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned the toll may rise dramatically as search and rescue operations are still continuing in both the countries, the BBC reported.

In the Turkish city of Osmaniye, near the epicentre, heavy rain hampered rescuers as they searched through the rubble looking for survivors.

The city was left without power in the aftermath of the devastation.

The earthquake has also caused significant damage to three airports across Turkey, creating additional challenges for aid deliveries.

A host of countries have sent rescue workers to help the stricken region and have offered support.

US President Joe Biden spoke earlier to his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan, reaffirming “the readiness of the United States to provide any and all needed assistance”.

In a statement, the White House said Biden “noted that US teams are deploying quickly to support Turkish search and rescue efforts and co-ordinate other assistance that may be required by people affected by the earthquakes, including health services or basic relief items”.

India on Monday announced that two teams of NDRF comprising 100 personnel with specially trained dog squads and necessary equipment were ready to be flown to the affected regions.

Medical teams were also being readied with trained doctors and paramedics with essential medicines. Relief material would be dispatched in coordination with the Government of Republic of Turkey and Indian Embassy in Ankara and Consulate General office in Istanbul.

On Tuesday, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said his government would provide an “initial” $10 million in aid, to go to humanitarian groups, while his New Zealand counterpart Chris Hipkins also announced $1.5 million in aid.

South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol issued an order to send rescuers and emergency medical items to Turkey.

The European Union is sending search and rescue teams to Turkey, while rescuers from the Netherlands and Romania are already on their way.

The UK has said it will send 76 specialists, equipment and rescue dogs.

France, Germany, and Israel have also pledged to help.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has offered help to both Turkey and Syria, as has Iran.

Monday’s quake is believed to be the strongest to hit Turkey since 1939, when a tremor of the same magnitude killed 30,000 people in Erzincan province, according to the USGS.

Earthquakes of this magnitude are rare, with fewer than five occurring each year on average, anywhere in the world, says the USGS.

Seven quakes with magnitude 7.0 or greater have struck Turkey in the past 25 years, but Monday’s is the most powerful.

Monday’s earthquake was powerful enough to be felt as far away as Cyprus, Lebanon and Israel.

‘Pathaan’ worldwide collection crosses Rs 200 crore mark

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Superstar Shah Rukh Khan’s “Pathaan” continued to rake in big numbers at the global box office as the film’s worldwide collection on day two reached Rs 219.6 crore, the makers announced on Thursday.

According to production house Yash Raj Films (YRF), the SRK-Deepika Padukone starrer raised Rs 113.6 crore in worldwide gross on day two of its release. The film’s opening day figure was Rs 106 crore.

In the domestic market, the film’s net day two collection stood at Rs 70.5 crore (Rs 82.94 crore gross). The film’s Hindi version amassed Rs 68 crore in net earnings, with its dubbed formats bringing in additional Rs 2.5 crore. “Pathaan” was also released in Tamil and Telugu on Wednesday.

With its day two haul, the movie created another record — first Hindi film to breach the Rs 70 crore net collection on a single day.

Internationally, the film earned Rs 30.70 crore gross.

The Siddharth Anand directorial, which faced boycott calls over the song “Besharam Rang”, marks Shah Rukh’s return to movies after a gap of over four years. His previous film was 2018’s “Zero”.

“As an industry, we are rejoicing today. This is the most important sentiment emerging out of Pathaan’s success. All of us at Yash Raj Films are grateful for the incredibly humbling support from media, audiences and the industry towards ‘Pathaan’.

“It is this unanimous love for the film that has resulted in Pathaan shattering all existing records and creating new ones. We are happy that the film has entertained everyone in such an immersive manner,” Akshaye Widhani, CEO of Yash Raj Films, said in a statement.

With its record haul in the first two days of its release, “Pathaan” has exceeded the expectations of the industry experts who were banking on the action spectacle to bring some cheer in the industry after a series of box office duds.

“Pathaan” is the fourth film in producer Aditya Chopra’s ambitious spy universe, following Salman Khan’s “Ek Tha Tiger” (2012) and “Tiger Zinda Hai” (2017), and “War”, featuring Hrithik Roshan (2019).

The movie follows the titular spy Pathaan (Shah Rukh) who comes out of exile to stop terrorist group Outfit X, led by Jim (John Abraham), from launching a debilitating attack on India.

“Pathaan”, which according to YRF has broken some 21 box office records, also has a guest appearance by Salman as fellow spy Tiger.

Vistara reports net profit, crosses $1bn revenue mark in FY23

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Vistara, a joint venture of Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines, has reported a net profit (excluding unrealized foreign currency loss and non-operating income) for the quarter that ended December 2022.

The airline crossed the $1 billion revenue mark and remained EBITDA positive in the current fiscal year and reported break-even for the first time in the quarter.

Vistara on Monday said that it delivered remarkable results for the first time since its inception in 2013.

The airline achieved its highest-ever domestic market share of 10.4 percent in July 2022 and maintained its position as the second-largest domestic airline in India since then, flying more than 11 million passengers in the calendar year 2022.

Vistara also registered an 11 percent year-on-year growth in the member base for its frequent flyer program, Club Vistara.

Vistara grew its international network by over 180 percent in 2022, by adding seven additional routes including three new destinations (Jeddah, Abu Dhabi, and Muscat).

It also grew its domestic network by over 50 percent, by adding six new routes including two new destinations (Coimbatore and Jaipur).

For the quarter that ended December 2022, the airline grew its capacity by 37 percent and passengers by 47 percent compared to the same period last year.

The airline recorded the second-highest on-time performance at four key metros and over 85 percent domestic load factor for most of the year in 2022.

This year, Vistara became the only Indian airline to be featured in Skytrax’s list of the World’s Top 20 airlines.

The airline currently has over 5,000 employees and operates close to 8,500 flights per month.

Vinod Kannan, Chief Executive Officer, of Vistara, said: “With significant network and fleet expansion and sustained growth over the last few months, 2022 has been a phenomenal year for Vistara in terms of our operational and financial performance. We are now aiming for higher goals as we enter the next phase of our growth journey.”

Vistara has augmented its operations from its hubs in Delhi and Mumbai and currently operates more than 75 and 50 daily domestic departures from the two cities, respectively.
