The 39-ball 64 was against Islamabad was Babar’s 6th half-century of the season. Babar Azam completed 9000 runs of his T20 career. Babar Azam has become the fastest batsman to score 9000 runs in T20 cricket. He has left behind veteran players like Chris Gayle and Virat Kohli in this matter. Babar Azam completed 9000 T20 runs in 245 innings.

Earlier this record was in the name of Chris Gayle, who completed 9000 T20 runs in 249 innings. Former India captain Virat Kohli continues to be at the third spot in the list having completed 9000 T20I runs in 271 innings.

David Warner of Australia (in 273 innings) and Aaron Finch (in 281 innings) follow the trio of Babar, Gayle and Kohli in the top five

    • 249 – Chris Gayle
    • 271 – Virat Kohli
    • 273 – David Warner
    • 281 – Aaron Finch

    Babar Azam’s team won

Babar Azam-led Peshawar Zalmi beat Islamabad United by 12 runs in the first eliminator. Peshawar Zalmi batting first scored 183 runs losing 8 wickets in 20 overs. In response, Islamabad United’s team could only manage 171 runs losing 6 wickets in 20 overs.

Peshawar’s win over Islamabad also earned them a spot in the Eliminator 2 where they will face Lahore Qalandars. The winner of the contest will qualify for the final and take on Multan Sultans on Sunday.

Speaking of his team’s win after the match, “The way the fast bowlers executed and came back, it was outstanding. The ball started to reverse after 10 overs. We couldn’t finish well with the bat, we were 20 runs short. There’s always room for improvement. We need to bowl well in the first six overs.”

Babar would hope to keep his and his team’s form intact for a couple of more games as Peshawar Zalmi look to lift the PSL 8 title.

Kashmiri youth have replaced stones with cricket bat, hockey, badminton: LG Manoj Sinha

    [ad_1]

Srinagar, Feb 09: Jammu and Kashmir’s Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha Thursday said that large number of Kashmiri youth are scripting their future in the field of sports and the Valley youth have replaced stones with cricket bat, hockey and badminton.

“The misguided youth who would pick up stones are today holding cricket bat, hockey, badminton and tennis rackets in their hands. This is the outcome of the pledge taken by Prime Minister Narendera Modi three years ago that removed hurdles and resolved all issues in J&K,” the LG said, as per news agency—Kashmir News Observer, while addressing the closing ceremony of LG’s Rolling Trophy that saw the participation of 42000 participants, in Jammu.

He said that Covid dampened the sports spirit for some time. “But a large number of youth are scripting the new history in the field of sports. They are the real champions and making J&K proud,” the LG said.

He said that in October 2020, the government took steps to provide sports kits to youth in every Panchayat after seeing their enthusiasm. “We had assured the jubilant youth that they will get best possible sports infrastructure. Talent is being traced at Panchayat level and sportsmen are being provided best guidance to prove their skills,” the LG said.

The LG said that that the players with their sill and endurance on playing field have inspired youth generation, renewed the essential spirit of sports and made this tournament truly memorable.

He said that Youth and Sports department, mission youth and Sports Council is visiting village to village to trace the talent and provide them a proper platform. “Special focus is being given to build a quality sports infrastructure at village level,” the LG said.

German Chancellor visits cricket stadium in Bengaluru, spends time with RCB players

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Sunday visited the M Chinnaswamy cricket stadium here and interacted with men and women players of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru team.

Scholz spoke to the officials of the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), RCB men and women team members for about 15 minutes.

The Chancellor understands that cricket is India’s number one passion when it comes to sports, a German Embassy official said.

“In Germany, cricket is not as popular. Although more than 200,000 Indians in Germany are popularising the sport there,” he said.
So, Scholz wanted to acclimatise himself about the sport and what cricket means to India, the official added.

“Moreover, he wanted to understand what the RCB, both the men’s and women’s team, mean to the city, especially as the RCB women’s team embark on the first season of the Women’s Premier League,” the official further said.

Earlier, the German Chancellor arrived at the Kempegowda International Airport in the afternoon. Karnataka Health Minister K Sudhakar, along with the German Consulate officials and Bengaluru Police Commissioner C H Pratap Reddy received him.

Later, Sudhakar tweeted: “Welcomed the Chancellor of Germany, His Excellency @OlafScholz to Bangalore at Kempegowda International Airport today. This is the first visit from a Chancellor of Germany to India, since 2011, when the Inter-Governmental Consultation (IGC) was set up between our two countries.”

Scholz is on a two-day trip to India. On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held bilateral talks with the visiting German Chancellor in Delhi.

  • Crooked Cricket

    [ad_1]

Years after the cricket body remained in news for all the wrong reasons, the JKCA is gradually emerging as a ‘game reserve’, reports Raashid Andrabi

    JKCA March 2022
A March 2022 photograph showing the JKCA managers and the cricketers. A JKCA photograph

Off late, Jammu and Kashmir’s cricketing reputation was upswing, both domestically and internationally. The region saw the emergence of a number of speedsters, some clocking speeds of over 150kmph. Now, insiders in the game red-flag JKCA’s alleged favouritism in selections and offering opportunities to ‘friends’ skipping merit. The cricket body was already mired in controversy for corruption and top federal investigators probed it for years.

This season, the JK Ranji Trophy squad faced the music. Their solitary victory against Vidarbha was largely down to the individual brilliance of Abid Mushtaq; as the team went on to suffer four substantial losses. Parvez Rasool and Abdul Samad were sorely missed, as the team faced setbacks and humiliations. The result of six losses from seven games was far from expected. One of the most well-known Kashmiri cricketers admitted to this reporter that the team had not been performing well and that the recent talent hunts held by the JKCA had been less than successful.

“During talent hunts, cricketers who weren’t prepared were forced to play for more than three straight days. Was it only to test their abilities, regardless of the injuries they sustain?” the cricketer, who wishes to stay anonymous said. “Even after excelling in the hunt, they are sitting at home because someone with a solid fraternity connection gets to participate.(This is why) we are playing poorly.”

While the region has produced some excellent players in the past, more work needs to be done to ensure that the game remains exciting. “Are we performing well? Since the beginning of time, we have consistently won games. Right now, the only difference is how much attention the organization is receiving from mainstream media.”

    Selection Process

For the last many years now, JKCA has been news, not for cricket. Now, it is facing scrutiny over its selection process, with many current and former players voicing their discontent.

“I was part of the JKCA for around three years and was one of the best run scorers, but was suddenly kicked out of the club for playing a local match without their permission,” another cricketer told this reporter. “I had to play since I needed to provide for my family and JKCA was unable to do so. What is tragic, some players who joined me for local matches are still part of the club, likely due to divine connections.”

Questions are being raised about the JKCA selectors like on what basis did they select the teams? There are cries for more accountability and transparency.

Officials. however, have their claims. “JKCA has achieved something unprecedented; all of the Under-19, Under-25, and Senior Men’s teams have reached the knockout stages of the white ball cricket tournament for the first time in JKCA history,” Majid Dar, a former Ranji cricketer, currently in-charge of cricket development in Kashmir, said. Denying that players from the Jammu region received preferential treatment, Majidinsisted the selection process was based on skill and talent.

The new naya Kashmir JKCA is run by a three-member sub-committee appointed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India – Anil Gupta, MithunManhas, and Sunil Sethi.

    A Bias?

“The IPL 2023 auction pool saw 21 players from Jammu and Kashmir, which is a testament to the strong performances of the JKCA teams in recent times,” Majid said.“With such a large representation of players in the IPL, JKCA has cemented its place as a leading cricket association in India.”

“I played for JKCA for more than two years and performed well consistently. I was dropped from numerous competitions. At the prime of my game, this could have been a life-changing moment for me, but instead, I was dropped, and someone with no recent performances was picked,” one promising Kashmir bowler said. “I am not saying that everything that JKCA does is improper. But the fact remains that bias and favouritism are currently at their peak. Check the roster for any recent domestic league; there are more players from the other side of the tunnel.”

In India, domestic cricket has remained plagued by nepotism. Now JKCA brought the same to the new naya Kashmir. Seemingly, JKCA is exhibiting a strong love for Jammu cricketers. The last match played by the JKCA team tells its own story. It had seven members from Jammu and one from Dehradun.

    An Illustration

Mateen Teli is a star fast bowler from Sopore’s Arampora area. Now living in the United Kingdom for the last five years, he has a remarkable story to tell – a story of rejections and successes.

As a school kid, Teli would sneak out of his house to play cricket in the neighbourhood. Concerned that their ward is obsessed with cricket, his parents shifted him to a boarding school in Delhi. There, he continued playing cricket and was shortlisted for the Under-19 trials. Despite receiving offers from clubs like Bengal Railways and practising at the national cricket academies, he still had not received a final call for a full-time cricket contract. Then, one day, Teli’s instinct led him back to Kashmir.

“I amazed everyone after participating in my first trails in Kashmir. I was told that I would soon represent JKCA in the under-23 division, so I simply will have to stop by the nets for a while,” Teli said. “After five years, I continued playing for the nets, sweating it out in practice, but I was never given the opportunity.” Shattered, Teli eventually gave up cricket.

Later, he moved to the UK to pursue his studies where he occasionally played tape ball in the backyard. “One day, I was approached by a group of players from Cavaliers and Carrington Cricket Club, one of the premier cricket clubs in the UK, asking me to join their team as a bowler,” Teli said. “I picked up cricket again, and I was one of the best players that year, I was selected to play as a net bowler for the England cricket team. It is a huge accomplishment when a non-native gets to play alongside stars like Alex Hales and Jonny Bairstow, and after wowing them all in the net I received recognition from superstars like Paul Collingwood.”

Teli said he regrets that back home, there was no opportunity but far away from home there were people who recognised his capacity and gave him a chance.

    A Record Keeper

Kashmir-based sports journalist and cricket analyst Mohsin Kamal has been following JKCA for years, knowing both sides of the game. He believes cricket in Jammu and Kashmir improved significantly in recent years and players are disciplined and committed unlike before. “Almost five cricketers made it to IPL this year. But have they made it because of the system?” Mohsin said. “I would suggest you trace their stories. Better infrastructure apart, you need a transparency system and unbiased management.” He has reported JKCA’s all talent hunts, which was an impressive outreach. “Did most of the players who performed well in these matches made it to national teams?”

Virat Kohli completes 25,000 runs in international cricket; beats Sachin

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Star India batter Virat Kohli completed 25,000 runs in international cricket on Sunday, becoming only the sixth batter to touch the landmark and the fastest player to do so.

Virat reached this landmark during the second Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia in front of his home crowd at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi.

In the 12th over of India’s second innings in a chase of 115 runs, Kohli drove the first ball bowled by spinner Nathan Lyon for a boundary in the long-on region, exhibiting some great footwork.

In the first innings, he had played a composed knock of 44 runs in 84 balls.

Now, in 492 matches and 549 innings, he has scored 25,012 runs at an average of 53.55. Virat has scored 74 centuries and 129 half-centuries in international cricket, with the best score of 254. Virat has played 106 Tests so far, in which he has 8,195 runs at an average of 48.77 with 27 tons and 28 fifties. His best score in the format is 254.

In ODIs, Virat has smashed 12,809 in 271 matches at an average of 57.69. He has 46 tons and 64 half-centuries in the format with the best score of 183.

The batter has also scored 4,008 T20I runs at an average of 52.73. He has a century and 37 fifties in the format.

This makes him the fastest batter to have accomplished the landmark. He surpassed compatriot and legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, who reached the 25,000-run mark in 577 innings.

He is currently the sixth-highest run-scorer in the history of international cricket.

The top-five runs in the history of the sport are India’s Sachin Tendulkar (34,357), Sri Lankan great Kumar Sangakkara (28,016), Australian batting legend Ricky Ponting (27,483), SL’s Mahela Jayawardene (25,957) and South African all-round great Jacques Kallis (25,534).

He is also India’s second-highest run-scorer next to Tendulkar.

Two youths stabbed to death over parking row at cricket tournament in Karnataka

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: In a tragic turn of events at a cricket tournament held ahead of the Shivaratri festival, two youths were stabbed to death by a group of people who had come to watch the match.

The incident took place on Friday at the Karnataka Public School ground in Doddabelavangala village on the outskirts of the city. The deceased have been identified as Bharath kumar (23), an engineering graduate, and Prateek (17), a pre-university student.

According to police officials, the youth were stabbed by four men over an argument on parking their four-wheeler inside the playground. The accused had come to watch the cricket match and were trying to park their vehicle in the ground when some of the spectators and organisers objected to it.

With the argument escalating, the accused and their car were attacked. The two victims were not involved in the fight, a police official stated.

However, the accused who fled the scene later accosted Bharath and Prateek, who clad in T-shirts provided by the tournament organisers, were waiting at a bus stop. The accused repeatedly stabbed the two youths and escaped from the spot. The victims were rushed to hospital where they succumbed to their injuries.

The accused have been identified and special teams have been formed to apprehend them, the police stated.
