Kerala: Will Pinarayi ‘hug a cow’ this Valentine’s Day? quips Congress

    [ad_1]

Thiruvananthapuram: Soon after reports of a new Rs 49-lakh cow shed at Pinarayi Vijayan’s residence surfaced, State Congress president K.Sudhakaran took a swipe at Kerala Chief Minister asking him whether he will “hug a cow” this Valentine’s Day.

“With a state-of-the-art cow shed at Vijayan’s official residence, the only thing that now remains to be seen is whether the chief minister will celebrate Valentine’s Day as a Cow hug day,” asked Sudhakaran.

The latter never misses any chance to attack Vijayan by pointing out that till date the CM has not attacked neither Modi nor Amit Shah.

On being asked by the media on Thursday, all Vijayan said was first it was stated that there was a music system installed in the cow shed, then came another report without any mention of it.

Neither denying nor confirming the reports, Vijayan, said, “All that happened is there was damage to the compound wall of the residence and everything was handled by the concerned departments.”

Immediately after the statement, the concerned government order that gave the sanction for the cowshed at a cost of Rs 49 lakhs surfaced in the media.

The trolls in social media also had a field day trolling the state government over its “hypocrisy”.

One of the incidents which is now being discussed is when legendary four-time Congress Chief Minister K.Karunakaran met with a serious road accident, he was advised to go swimming. After swimming at a state-run hotel in the capital city, a decision was taken to build a pool at the official residence.

This was met by huge protests by the then top CPI(M) leader and three-time former Chief Minister E.K.Nayanar who said if the Left returns to power, the pool will be used to bathe the dogs.

Giriraj Singh backs celebrating ‘Cow Hug Day’ on Feb 14

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Backing the Animal Welfare Board of India’s advisory to celebrate ‘Cow Hug Day’ on February 14, Union minister Giriraj Singh on Thursday said that everyone should love cows.

“A very good decision has been taken, cows should be hugged. I welcome the decision of Purushottam Rupala ji’s ministry. We all should love and hug the cow,” the minister said while addressing a press conference here.

Union Minister Sadhvi Niranjana Jyoti has also welcomed the decision saying “33 crore gods and goddesses live within a cow”.

“Cow is considered as our mother and we should embrace them. 33 crore gods and goddesses live within the cow; I thank the honorable minister. The cow gives us milk from birth till death, we drink its milk. The mother who gives birth keeps us in the womb for 9 months, then when we worship her as a mother, then why not the mother cow?,” Sadhvi Niranjana said.

Aiming to celebrate the ‘Vedic tradition’ and the immense benefits a cow possesses, the Animal Welfare Board of India has urged people to celebrate ‘Cow Hug Day’ on February 14 which is celebrated as Valentine’s Day.

“We all know that the Cow is the backbone of Indian culture and rural economy, sustains our life, and represents cattle wealth and biodiversity. It is known as “Kamdhenu” and “Gaumata” because of its nourishing nature like mother, the giver of all providing riches to humanity,” the Animal Welfare Board informed in a statement.

The body said that the Vedic traditions are on the verge of “extinction” due to the progress of western culture.

“The dazzle of western civilization has made our culture and heritage almost forgotten,” the Board stated.

As per the Animal Welfare Board, owing to its immense benefits, hugging cows will bring emotional richness and increase “individual and collective happiness”.

“Therefore, all the cow lovers may also celebrate February 14 as Cow Hug day keeping in mind the importance of mother cow and making life happy and full of positive energy,” the statement added.

This issue with the approval of competent authority and on the direction of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairyin, the statement added.

After the notification, the Uttar Pradesh Animal Husbandry Minister Dharampal Singh also urged people to celebrate ‘Cow Hug Day’, instead of Valentine’s Day on February 14.

Talking to ANI, the Minister said, “On one hand, Valentine’s Day will be celebrated all over the world on February 14, on the other hand, the Animal Welfare Society of India has given another option to those having problems with Valentine’s Day. They can celebrate Cow Hug Day if they want.”

He said that there are many people in India who have a lot of problems with celebrating Valentine’s Day, and for them, the government has declared this day.

“Cow is the mother of the world and it is the only animal in the world whose urine and dung also work as medicine. One can get rid of many diseases with its mere touch, that’s why I would also like that people should celebrate Cow Hug Day instead of Valentine’s Day on February 14,” he further said.

Further talking about Valentine’s Day, he said, “I also feel that Valentine’s Day should not be celebrated because distance should be kept from those things which cause perversion in the society.”

It will be good if people respond positively to celebrate Feb 14 as ‘Cow Hug Day’: Rupala

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Union Minister Parshottam Rupala on Thursday said it will be good if people respond positively to the call given by the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) to celebrate February 14 as Cow Hug Day’.

Rupala, who is Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, said nothing much should be read into the choice of February 14 as a date for this purpose.

February 14 is observed as Valentine’s Day across the world.

“This country has an age-old tradition of worshipping the cow and it is a matter of great happiness that people embrace the cow It is good if people respond positively to our appeal,” the minister told reporters.

Since February 14 is a day of love, it is good if people remember and love the cow on that day. “And if someone taunts on this, then one should not feel angry but feel pity…,” he added.

It is for the first time, AWBI — a statutory advisory body on animal welfare laws, has appealed to cow lovers in the country to celebrate ‘Cow Hug day’.

The Board noted that the appeal has been made because the vedic traditions are almost on the “verge of extinction” due to the progress of western culture.

The Board, established in 1962 under Section 4 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, provides grants to animal welfare organisations and advises the Centre on animal welfare issues.

Karnataka: Dalit woman thrashed as cow strays on upper caste land

    [ad_1]

A Dalit woman, whose cow had strayed inside an upper caste person’s land was assaulted, beaten with chappals, and hurled casteist abuses by the latter in Koppal district of Karnataka.

The incident occurred on February 3 in Rampur village. The accused tied the Dalit woman in front of his house and then began hitting her with his chappals.

Family members of the Dalit victim have alleged this is a common practice followed by the accused Amaresh Kumbar for many years.

Based on the Dalit victim’s complaint, Kanakagiri police registered a case against Kumbar under the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.

Dalit atrocities are becoming progressively common in Karnataka. Last year, upper caste members in Heggotara village of Chamarajanagar taluk cleaned a water tank after a Dalit woman drank water from it to quench her thirst.

Dalit young men protested by drinking water from all water tanks in the village thus highlighting the issue of discrimination and untouchability that is heavily prevalent in rural areas.

Also, a message was painted on the tanks, making it clear that they are meant for public use and anyone can drink water from them.

Similarly, in December, a Dalit woman was seen being mercilessly kicked and dragged by a priest out of a temple after she dared to enter it. A video of the assault soon went viral. The incident took place in Bengaluru.

The video shows the woman being repeatedly slapped, and dragged by the hair outside. The accused can be seen beating her with sticks even as she runs for cover.

A U.S. citizen was arrested for walking a cow through Red Square in Moscow, according to local media.

Alicia Day, “who is a vegetarian and animal rights activist, was walking on Red Square … using a calf as visual propaganda and shouting the slogan ‘animals are not food,’” a judge at Moscow’s Tverskoy district court was quoted as saying.

Day was arrested on Tuesday for participating in an unsanctioned protest. She also allegedly resisted arrest, the court said, and was fined 20,000 rubles (€261).

“I bought the calf [named Doctor Cow] so that it wouldn’t be eaten. I decided to take him to such a beautiful place and show him the country,” Day told the TASS news agency.

“I just wanted to show Doctor Cow the Red Square,” the vegan activist said in her defense, adding that she didn’t regret her actions.

The New Jersey-born vegan activist made headlines in 2019 when she was living in London and kept a pet pig in her flat, spoiling it with trips to restaurants and sharing baths with it.

UP: Muslim man thrashed by Bajrang Dal on cow smuggling allegation dies

    [ad_1]

A 22-year-old Muslim man was killed in the Mewat district of Uttar Pradesh on January 28 after he along with two others was reportedly beaten up by right-wing Bajrang Dal workers on allegations of cow smuggling.

The deceased – Waris – was a resident of Hussainpur village in Haryana’s Mewat district. A video has emerged on Twitter where an injured, tired and scared Waris can be seen inside a car along with two other Muslim men.

However, according to Mewat police, Waris died in a ‘car accident’. His family members vehemently refute the police’s claims and allege that they had come to save the Bajrang Dal and not Waris.

Following Waris’s death, a dharna was arranged by social activists. Speaking to a local channel, one of the activists said that the police statement that Waris died in an accident is false. “It is clearly shown in the viral video how Waris and the other two men with him are being asked their names and villages in a threatening way. It is highly disturbing. We demand the administration take action against those who are responsible for his death,” said one activist.

Waris is survived by his young wife and baby girl.

  • Facebook was a cash cow for Trump. It could end up being a ‘bronze goose.’

Facebook was a cash cow for Trump. It could end up being a ‘bronze goose.’

    [ad_1]

    election 2024 trump 24231

“I’ll be curious to see if the Trump team runs into a similar situation,” she added.

Trump was suspended from Facebook for his role in inciting the Jan. 6 riot in early 2021. But the suspension wasn’t permanent and Meta, Facebook’s parent company, said earlier this week that it would be lifted soon.

“President Trump should have never been banned, so getting back on this platform allows the campaign access to that universe once again,” Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung said in a statement. “We are getting closer to the full spectrum of building out the operation and dominating at every level, which we have already been doing based on poll numbers.”

The platform Trump is rejoining, however, is different from the one from which he was exiled. And how his team manages those changes could go a long way in determining the success of his efforts for a second term as president.

For starters, Facebook placed notable restrictions on ad targeting for political clients at the beginning of last year. And in 2021, Apple turned off ad tracking on their phones for users by default.

Those alterations represented a seismic shift for the advertising world. It also had profound impacts on political campaigns. Digital operatives from both parties say the changes have made it less valuable for campaigns to advertise on the social media behemoth.

One Republican who worked on statewide campaigns in recent cycles, who was granted anonymity to discuss internal fundraising metrics, said there was a notable dip in campaigns’ return on investment. “In 2020, [return on investment] on a really good day would be 200 percent. The minimum was 150 percent in 2020,” the operative said. “In 2022, it would be 90 percent or 80 percent. We would celebrate it when 110 [percent] came in.”

A Trump adviser close to his campaign acknowledged that the change in targeting would make Facebook less effective, but still said that that lack of access had been “a huge hindrance from a fundraising standpoint.”

“You’ve gone from an area where you’re able to be very certain about how your return on ad spend is taking effect, to a little bit more fuzzy,” said Mark Jablonowski, the president and chief technology officer of DSPolitical, a major Democratic digital ad firm. “It’s not that it doesn’t work anymore, but it definitely has made it harder to prove its efficacy.”

There was a noticeable retrenchment on political Facebook ad spending during the midterms, particularly among major Republican candidates and organizations. Statewide Republican campaigns and groups rarely cracked the list of top political spenders on the platform, even as Democratic statewide candidates still poured in money.

“Candidates struggled to raise money online” in the midterms, said Eric Wilson, a veteran GOP digital operative. “The playbook for fundraising on Facebook has changed and the Trump campaign, like any other candidate, is going to have to adapt to that. And no one has quite figured that out yet.”

Facebook, Wilson allowed, could be “more of a bronze goose now” for Trump than the golden one it once was. That may be especially true as Facebook has signaled that it would close off Trump’s access again if he were to exhibit the behavior that got him banned in the first place.

Even those GOP entities that continued to bet big on Facebook found the payoff lacking. The National Republican Senatorial Committee poured money into the platform in 2021 and early 2022 in hopes of building up a sustainable small dollar program. But that high profile bet ended up crumbling under its own weight.

Trump’s political operation also significantly scaled back its advertising on the platform during the midterms. While Trump himself was banned from Facebook, his fundraising arms were still allowed to advertise — with notable restrictions, including not posting in the voice of the former president.

But it was much more muted from when Trump was actively campaigning for higher office. Between June of last year — when his committees resumed advertising after his ban — and the launch of his campaign in mid-November, Trump’s leadership PAC Save America and affiliated fundraising committees spent over $2 million on ads on Facebook and Instagram.

By contrast, from May 2018, when Meta made political spending data public, and the Nov. 2020 election, Trump’s political operation spent over $113 million on advertising on his main Facebook page alone. That total doesn’t account for the tens of millions his presidential campaign spent on affiliated pages. His president’s political operation was the most prolific advertiser on the platform during the cycle.

Since launching his third bid for the White House, Trump’s political campaign has not spent any meaningful money on ads on Facebook and Instagram.

Few other would-be 2024 Republican candidates have spent a sizable amount on Facebook to date either. Over the last 30 days — from Dec. 25 through Jan. 23 — just two potential primary challengers to Trump have spent five figures on the platform: Nearly $62,000 for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who appears to be running a significant campaign to build up his supporter list, and just over $10,000 for former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan.

Trump’s team argued to POLITICO shortly after his launch that, given that the campaign was just beginning, “resources are better spent on other platforms and programmatically across the internet.”

But after the reinstatement, those in the former president’s orbit said they expected it to play a bigger role. “The enormity of it can’t be understated and you can talk to so many people and you can target people,” said the adviser.

“I’m not saying it’s a silver bullet,” the adviser added, stressing that “If you become too reliant on one mode of fundraising, you write your own obituary.”

Meredith McGraw and Sam Stein contributed to this report.

  • Bengaluru: Congress will purify Vidhana Soudha with cow urine once in power, says DK Shivakumar

Bengaluru: Congress will purify Vidhana Soudha with cow urine once in power, says DK Shivakumar

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: Asking Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai and Ministers to “pack up” with assembly polls around, Karnataka Congress president D K Shivakumar on Tuesday said his party will come to power and purify the ‘Vidhana Soudha’ with ‘Ganjala’ (cow urine), alleging that it was polluted by corruption during the BJP rule.

Also, hitting out at the ruling BJP and Bommai for leveling “false allegations” against previous Congress regime led by him, Leader of Opposition Siddaramaiah challenged the Chief Minister to constitute a Supreme Court Judge led inquiry commission to probe both tenures, if his government has the guts.

“It’s about 40-45 days left for your government, pack your tents and do whatever collection that is left and go. We will come with dettol to clean Vidhana Soudha. I have even got some Ganjala (cow urine) for purification….people are wanting to get rid of this evil government,” Shivakumar said.

Speaking to reporters here, he said, “Bommai, better, tell all you ministers to pack up soon.”

The Congress leaders’ attack on the BJP government came a day after the ruling party filed a complaint with the Lokayukta against Siddaramaiah and Congress, alleging irregularities in ‘TenderSURE’ projects, during their tenure.

State Health Minister K Sudhakar, quoting a CAG report, had alleged that there were financial irregularities to the tune of Rs 35,000 crore under the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government.

Hitting back at Sudhakar’s allegations, Shivakumar asked as to what BJP was doing for the last 3.5 years. “They were in power and should have ordered an inquiry and got it investigated.”

BJP has a “brand” of 40 per cent commission, and to cover up they were trying to make baseless allegations against Congress, he said.

Questioning as to why BJP old timers were not speaking or reacting to allegations of corruption, and the ruling party was using someone like Sudhakar who had defected from the Congress to make counter allegations, he said, “You (BJP) are not able to make one person from your party speak. There are 32 groups in your party, I have got a list done…and you talk about us.”

Meanwhile, Siddaramaiah, hitting back at Bommai and BJP for levelling corruption charges against the previous Congress government headed by him, demanded a probe by a Supreme Court judge headed commission about alleged scams and corruption charges from 2013 to till now.

“The allegations about 40 per cent commission, PSI recruitment and COVID scam- let all those allegations that we have made, be combined with the allegations that they (BJP) are making against us now, and together they be handed over to an inquiry commission headed by a Supreme Court Judge. If they have guts, let them do it,” he challenged.

Targeting Minister Sudhakar, Siddaramaiah said, “he was Congress MLA during our government. Why was he quiet?”

BJP is panicking with fear of defeat in the election and was making baseless allegations. Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) was repealed by High Court, not by the BJP government. “We did not shut the Lokayukta as alleged by BJP,” he said.
