Dubai fire: Indian couple who died were preparing iftar for neighbours

Abu Dhabi: An Indian couple who died in a massive fire that broke out at a residential building in Dubai killing 16 people, was preparing an iftar meal for their neighbours, according to a media report.
38-year-old Rijesh Kalangadan, and his wife Jeshi 32-year-old Kandamangalath, were preparing Vishu sadhya, a festival meal, for their neighbours to end their fast on Saturday evening, the Gulf News reported.
At least 16 people were killed and nine others injured in the blaze in Al Ras area, which Dubai Civil Defence attributed to a lack of compliance with building security and safety requirements.

Hailing from Kerala, Kalangadan worked as a business development manager with a travel and tourism company, and his wife Kandamangalath was a schoolteacher.
According to Gulf News, the couple had invited their Muslim neighbours, a group of bachelors from Kerala, for an iftar meal.
“They had invited us during Onam and Vishu lunches earlier also. This time, they told us to come for iftar as it is Ramzan,” Riyas Kaikambam, who lived with seven roommates in apartment number 409, said.
The couple lived in 406 — adjacent to flat 405 where the fire started.
Calling them a “friendly couple”, Kaikambam said he last saw them outside their apartment.

“I could see the teacher was crying,” he recalled.
“There was no response to calls later. I could see Rijesh’s last seen status on WhatsApp at 12.35 p.m. I just can’t believe the man who helped me book my flight ticket, the man who invited me for iftar, is gone,” he said.
The couple was scheduled to fly home for the house-warming of their home next month, a family member from Kerala told Gulf News.
The fire broke out on fourth floor of the building on Saturday at 12.35 p.m. and soon spread to other areas.
Dubai Civil Defence Operations Room was informed about the inferno after which fire engines were rushed to the spot.
The fire was controlled around 2.42 p.m.
The building has been sealed for safety reasons.

Gujarat: Couple behead themselves using guillotine-like device as sacrificial ritual

Rajkot: A man and his wife allegedly committed suicide by decapitating themselves using a guillotine-like device, which they created at home, so that they could offer their heads for a sacrificial ritual in Gujarat’s Rajkot district, police said on Sunday.
Hemubhai Makwana (38) and his wife Hansaben (35) killed themselves by getting their heads severed by the blade of the device in a hut at their farm in Vinchhiya village, sub-inspector Indrajeetsinh Jadeja of Vinchhiya police station said.
The husband-wife duo executed the plan in such a manner that their heads rolled into the fire altar after getting severed, he said, adding that a suicide note was found at the spot.

“The couple first prepared a fire altar before putting their heads under a guillotine-like mechanism held by a rope. As soon as they released the rope, an iron blade fell on them, severing their heads, which rolled into the fire,” Jadeja said.
The ritual was performed between Saturday night and Sunday afternoon when the police were informed, he said, adding that a suicide note was recovered from the spot.
The family members of the couple said the duo had been offering prayers in the hut every day since the last one year, he said.
The couple has two children, parents and other relatives living nearby, who learnt about the incident on Sunday morning and informed the police, the official said.
A suicide note was also recovered from the couple’s possession, in which they urged their relatives to take care of their parents and children, he said.

A case of accidental death was registered and the bodies were sent for post-mortem, the official added.

Bengal couple commits suicide, leaves ‘wish list’ for pet dog

Kolkata: A couple committed suicide in Bengal’s West Midnapore district after leaving a wish list about the future of their pet dog.
On Friday night, the local police recovered the bodies of Debasish Ghosh and Jolly Ghosh from their residence in the Alamgunj area along with a suicide note found from from near their bodies.
Sources in the Ghatal police station said that in the suicide note, there was a line wherein the couple mentioned that debt burden forced them to take the extreme step, the remaining part of the note was a wish list for ‘Jango’, their pet Golden Retriever dog.

The couple in the note expressed their desire that Jango be handed over to an NGO working for the welfare of animals.
“The note also has details of Jango’s food habits along with a daily diet chart. The note mentions the name and contact details of a veterinarian under whose supervision Jango was,” the police said.
The note ends with a heartfelt prayer that any individual or organisation adopting Jango should take care of him as per the points mentioned in the wish list.
“We will make all possible attempts so that Jango is handed over to an NGO or an individual dog-lover ready to adopt him. But the question is where to house him in the interim period. The dog seems to be in a totally confused state unable to track his owners,” the police said.

‘Not for India…go away’; couple denied free Ramzan treats in Singapore

Singapore: A supermarket chain in Singapore has apologised after an Indian Muslim couple was turned away from one of its booths offering free refreshments to those breaking fast during Ramzan.
Farah Nadya and her husband Jahabar Shalih had gone to the FairPrice outlet at Our Tampines Hub on April 9 at around 7 p.m. for grocery shopping when an employee allegedly told them that the freebies were “not for India (sic)”, The Straits Times reported.
Nadya, 35, is a Malaysian Indian and runs her own healthcare company, while her 36-year-old husband is an Indian who works in the technology sector.

Shalih told The Straits Times that he was standing at the booth reading about free refreshments when a FairPrice employee approached him and said: “Not for India, not for India. Further, the employee told the couple not to take anything from the stand, and ‘go away’.”
Sharing her ordeal in a Facebook post, Nadya said that they did not intend to take the free items, and had stopped by the stand “to applaud such an inclusive initiative”.
The couple said they shared the experience on social media to “be accountable” to their children, who are of mixed race.
“I have encountered such things before, but this time I had to explain to my son what had happened,” Shalih told The Straits Times.
“I don’t think it’s the fault of the staff. I just feel that such things (can) happen, this is purely a lack of awareness.”

Apologising for the incident, a FairPrice spokesman said “we take this matter seriously”, adding that the employee in question has been “counselled”.
The initiative by FairPrice Group, launched at the end of March and running till April 21, sees 60 FairPrice outlets giving away free drinks, snacks and dates to those breaking fast during Ramzan.

Hyderabad: Muslim couple file complaint after right-wing ‘harassment’

Hyderabad: A Muslim couple filed a police complaint stating that they have been allegedly targeted by certain sections of the right-wing Hindu community by exposing their personal details such as phone numbers, names of their relatives, addresses etc.
Addressed to the City Commissioner of Police, Joint Commissioner of Police (Special Branch), Deputy Commissioner of Police (South Zone) and Station House Officer (SHO) P S Mirchowk, the plaintiff named – Syed Inayat Hussain Abidi – mentioned in detail the harassment.
The letter mentions the first complaint against him was registered in 2022 by Radhika Rangwala who accuses him of indulging in terrorist activities.

“I have allegedly videographed various defence and DRDO locations,” the letter stated. Abidi said that because of the FIR, he was called by the Kanchanbagh police station and thereafter by Special Branch Chatta Bazar by investigating officers named Sudarshan, Ravindra, Venu and Mehdi.
“When the authorities found out that the allegations are far from the truth, false and fictitious, they assured me that action will be taken against the complainant,” Abidi wrote in his letter.
However, Abidi’s problems did not end there. On November 23, 2022, he found out that police complaints were registered against him, his wife and his sisters alleging that they were a part of the alleged terror group Saraya Al Mukhtar and were ‘planning to attack consulates such as USA, UK, Bahrain etc’.
“I was summoned multiple times and this continued till January 2023, and again after knowing that my family was being falsely accused, the authorities left us,” the letter stated.
“Again a complaint was lodged against me by Uma Maheshwari alleging that I am associated with different terror organisations,” Abidi’s letter said.

Abidi also found out that his personal details were exposed to the public through a tweet by Goshmahal MLA and suspended BJP leader T Raja Singh.
“I started getting threatening messages from unknown numbers, whereby they are abusing me of filthy language and proclaiming to kill me,” Abidi stated in his letter.

Newly wed couple killed in road accident

Bengaluru: A newly married couple from Maharashtra returning home after visiting a pilgrimage centre in Karnataka was killed in a road accident on Saturday in the southern state’s Belagavi district, an official said.
The incident took place in Halluru village near Mudalagi taluk.
The deceased were identified as Indrajith Mohan Dammanagi (27) and Kalyani Indrajith Dammanagi (24).

According to the police, they were married for 10 days and hailed from Maharashtra.
They were returning after visiting Banashankari temple in Badami. The accident had taken place on the state highway between Nippani and Mudhol.
The couple was travelling in a car and a tanker had collided with the vehicle.

SRINAGAR: In continuation with ongoing raids to arrest on the run ‘Waris Punjab De’ chief Amritpal Singh, Police detained a couple for their alleged links with one of his aides from Ranbir Singh Pura area of Jammu on Saturday.
According to an official who spoke to the news agency KNO, Amrik Singh and his wife Paramjit Kour, both residents of RS Pura, were taken into custody and later handed over to the Punjab Police.
He stated that the couple had been apprehended for allegedly having connections with Papalpreet Singh, a trusted associate of Amritpal Singh. ‘The couple’s mobile phones have been confiscated for additional examination,’ he added. ‘The Punjab Police is investigating the issue, and they will be interrogating the couple.’
The district magistrates of Kishtwar and Ramban districts have revoked the arms licenses of two bodyguards who were escorting the leader of Waris Punjab De and pro-Khalistan Sikh, Amritpal Singh. According to sources, the licenses for Talwinder Singh and Virender Singh, who serve as Amritpal Singh’s bodyguards, had been issued in the Kishtwar and Ramban districts. (KNO)

UAE: Arab couple arrested for stealing Mercedes Benz worth Rs 11 lakh

An Arab couple in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has been sentenced to six months for stealing a Mercedes Benz car worth 50,000 Dirhams (Rs 11,16,971), local media reported.
According to the case filed by the victim, the woman resident of Ras Al Khaimah was considered the main defendant in the case because she posed as a car buyer.
In the details, the victim posted his car up for sale on social media, and the woman reached out to him expressing interest. He agreed to sell the car for 50,000 Dirhams.
As per a report by Khaleej Times, the victim drove from Dubai to Ras Al Khaimah at a coffee shop after the woman said she transferred the money and added that it takes about three hours for the money to reflect in his bank account.
Meanwhile, the woman took the car key on the table and left, saying she wanted to check the car.
As per media reports, the victim said that after a while, her husband also asked him for an excuse to go to the restroom, but he didn’t return. And when he went out to look for the couple, couldn’t find them and his car.
He tried calling them but the phones were switched off.
He then filed a complaint at the police station and the Public Prosecutor referred the case to the Ras Al Khaimah Day Court after examining the case.

It is reported that, that the couple did not appear before the court and a criminal sentence was issued against them for a period of six months.
The final verdict in the case has not yet been issued.

Raj cops look for couple seen romancing on bike on Holi eve

Jaipur: Rajasthan cops are on the lookout for a couple who was seen romancing on a motorbike on Jaipur streets on the eve of Holi.
The reported incident took place at the B2 Bypass in Jaipur.
The couple was caught on mobile camera performing ‘romancing stunts’ on motorbike on the eve of Holi.
Meanwhile, the video has gone viral and is attracting many eyeballs and comments of social media handlers.
The video was apparently shot by a passenger in a car. The viral video shows the girl sitting on the petrol tank of the Royal Enfield motorcycle as the man drives the two-wheeler. In the video itself, a bit of the Bypass is visible in-board.
Police have now started a search for the accused couple based on the registration number of the bike.
Police officials said that the traffic police are likely to penalise the accused couple.
Earlier, in a similar incident in February, a couple was caught on camera performing ‘kissing stunts’ on a motorbike in Ajmer city.
