‘Mann Ki Baat’ transformed country’s mindset, initiated mass movements on social causes: Report

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Mann Ki Baat’ has transformed the country’s mindset and initiated mass movements towards various social causes such as cleanliness, women empowerment, yoga and protecting the environment, according to a BJP-linked think tank’s report.
Public Policy Research Centre (PPRC) directors Vinay Sahasrabuddhe, a senior BJP leader, and Sumeet Bhasin presented the report to party national president J P Nadda on Monday, the BJP said in a statement, a day after the 100th episode of the programme was broadcast.
The radio broadcast has “transformed the country’s mindset and inculcated a positive outlook amongst the people,” the report, titled “Mann Ki Baat Se Jan Ki Baat”, said.

“Through powerful and inspiring messages coupled with a practice of open dialogue, Prime Minister Modi has reformed the mindset of people, helping tackle issues like drug-abuse and chronic exam-related stress amongst students, etc.,” it said.
It was through ‘Mann Ki Baat’ that “a sense of resilience and unity was maintained and sustained in the face of adversities brought by the deadly COVID-19 pandemic,” the report said.
It added that the programme has ensured the prime minister’s vision of ‘Sabka Sath and Sabka Vikas’ through ‘Sabka Prayas and Sabka Vishwas’.
“‘Mann Ki Baat has brought significant transformation in the Indian demographic, initiating mass movements towards various social causes ranging from ‘swachhata’, environment protection, promotion of ‘Make in India’ products like khadi, women empowerment to yoga, etc., showcasing India’s ‘Jan Shakti’,” the report said.
Many of these issues are linked with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), it added.

The report claimed that the prime minister’s appeals during his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ programme to promote khadi have resulted in manifold increase in its production (115 per cent) and sales (179 per cent) from 2013 to 2020, directly resulting in the empowerment of artisans and weavers involved in its production.
The increase in the production of khadi gave a “significant boost” to the income of artisans and weavers by 33 per cent and 10 per cent respectively, it added.
Through the ‘Mann Ki Baat’ radio broadcast, the report said, the prime minister promoted the “Indian way of life”.
“The prime minister has celebrated India’s cultural richness and diversity, reinvigorating India’s ancient soul. The PM has celebrated India’s luminary figures, propagated the teachings and learnings of various ancient texts and different religions and festivals,” the report said.
He promoted tourism, illustrating the beauty of “incredible India”, and revived the tourism sector through people’s participation, it added.
The ‘Mann Ki Baat’ programme has helped identify exam-related stress as a chronic problem, urging students to find their inner selves rather than succumbing to external and unhealthy pressure, the report said.
“This has transformational potential for the youth of the country,” it noted.
Through the monthly radio programme, the report said, the prime minister has sought to transform how the general public looks at specially-abled persons.
“PM Modi urged the nation to recognise the specially-abled population as ‘divyang’ due to their inherent divinity and considerable achievements, showcasing their strong will towards life,” it said.
The prime minister has motivated the youth through ‘Mann Ki Baat’ to become self-reliant and focus on skill development, and also promoted the start-up culture in the country along with a special emphasis on developing industry-related skills, the report said.
BJP president Nadda said the prime minister through ‘Mann Ki Baat’ has tied the country and the society together, and inspired and encouraged people with his “soulful dialogue” with them.
“‘Mann Ki Baat’ has become a medium to celebrate the collective spirit of the people of India and has shed light on their inspiring life journeys,” he said.

J-K Rail Project: Country’s First Cable-Stayed Rail Bridge In Reasi Completed

Jammu, Apr 29: The work on the country’s first cable-stayed railway bridge at Anji Khad in Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir has been completed, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said.
The completion of the bridge drew praise from Prime Minister Narendra Modi who is keenly monitoring the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Railway Link (USBRL), which will provide rail connectivity between the Kashmir Valley and the rest of the country.
“In 11 months, India’s first cable-stayed rail bridge (Anji Khad) is ready…,” Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw tweeted on Friday, sharing a video of the completed bridge. The total length of the cable strand used in the bridge is 653 km.
Reacting to Vaishnaw’s tweet, the prime minister wrote “excellent”.
The completion of Anji Khad bridge, having a single pylon with a height of 331 metres above the river bed on Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), is yet another major breakthrough achieved by the Indian Railways, which is expecting to complete the Rs 37,000 crore project by the end of this year.
Minister of State for Railways Darshana Vikram Jardosh, who recently inspected the USBRL project by visiting various key locations including Anji Khad bridge and the nearby iconic Chenab bridge, termed the completion of the country’s first cable-stayed bridge as “another milestone” despite difficult geographic conditions.
“I visited the bridge site and congratulated everyone for successfully installing all 96 cables of the bridge in a record time of 11 months. This asymmetrical cable-stayed bridge crosses the deep gorges of Anji river, a tributary of river Chenab,” she said.
Jardosh said the bridge connects tunnel T2 on the Katra side and Tunnel T3 on the Reasi side.

“It has been the PM’s vision to make Indian railways the best in the world. Overcoming geographic and climatic challenges, our engineers and railway officials have conquered the invincible,” the minister said.
Described as a “true engineering marvel”, the bridge has 48 cables each on lateral and central spans with work on its pylon started in 2017, officials said, adding the pylon is standing 191 metre from its foundation level.
They said It is the second highest railway bridge after the iconic arch bridge over Chenab at Kauri, which is the highest railway bridge in the world being 359 metres above the river bed level — 35 metres higher than the iconic Eiffel tower in Paris.
Anji Khad bridge has a total length of 473.25 metres, while the length of the viaduct is 120 metres. The central embankment has a length of 94.25 meters, the officials said.
They said the bridge has been designed to handle heavy storms of strong winds and even explosions.
In October 2016, the Railways decided to build a cable-stayed bridge at Anji Khad after the plan to build an arch bridge similar to Chenab bridge was abandoned due to vulnerability of the structure, primarily due to concerns over geological stability of the region.
The Railway Ministry sanctioned the construction of the railway line from Udhampur to Baramulla via Srinagar in phases — 25-km Udhampur to Katra in 1994, 118-km Qazigund to Baramulla and 129-km Katra to Qazigund in 1999.
In view of the importance of the USBRL in providing seamless and hassle-free connectivity to Kashmir, the 272-km-long rail link was declared as a “National Project” in 2002.
Out of the total 272-km USBRL project, 161-km was commissioned in phases with first phase 118-km Qazigund-Baramulla section commissioned in October 2009, followed by 18-km Banihal-Qazigund in June 2013 and 25-km Udhampur-Katra in July 2014. The work on 111-km Katra-Banihal stretch is going on.–(PTI)

SL President requests India’s help to integrate IT in country’s civil service

Colombo: The head of Indian Institute of Good Governance shared India’s experience to improve the performance of civil service using information technology with Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe, who expressed interest in replicating this in his country.
The President met Bharat Lal, Director General of the Indian Institute of Good Governance, who visited Sri Lanka to discuss potential ways to enhance the country’s civil service and improve government institution performance by implementing effective monitoring measures.
At the meeting at the President’s official residence on Saturday, Lal “shared
how India was successful in integrating information technology into civil service”, the President Media Division (PMD) stated.

“India’s success in incorporating information technology into public service delivery, has resulted in significant progress and cost savings,” he told the Sri Lankan head of state.
During the discussion, President Wickremesinghe urged Lal’s assistance in establishing a University of Governance and Public Policy in Sri Lanka.
On Friday, launching a master plan to digitalise the country’s economy by 2030, the President vowed to build a digitalised modern Sri Lanka by digitalising the government sector. He said that a Committee of Cabinet Ministers would be set up to ensure that the government sector digitalisation would be done speedily.
He said that it is a duty of the government to accelerate the digitalisation.
During the Saturday discussion with President Wickremesinghe, Lal was accompanied by Indian High Commissioner in Colombo, Gopal Baglay.

Attempts of religious conversion hinder country’s development: Indresh Kumar

New Delhi: Senior RSS leader Indresh Kumar has said that interference in someone else’s religion or attempts to convert someone hinders the country’s development and harmony.
Speaking as the chief guest at the ‘Vibrant North East’ programme in Maharashtra Sadan here, Kumar who is also the patron of the Bharatiya Christian Manch and Muslim Rashtriya Manch said that all religions should follow their respective religion and respect each other. “Whatever may be our religion, but above all, we all are Indians,” Kumar emphasised.
Addressing the gathering, the RSS leader said that this event is a commendable step to introduce the people of Delhi to the cultural heritage of the North East. “The people of North East are always ahead to contribute in the progress of the country. Be it the fight for freedom or working to make the country a developed nation after independence, they have always contributed.”
Kumar further said that more attention has been paid to the North East since the Narendra Modi government came to the Centre. “Today, the northeastern states are moving ahead on the path of all-round development, which is the impact of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s governance,” he added.
BJP national spokesperson Tom Vadakkan, Rajya Sabha MP S. Phangnok Konyan, Pratap Palla from Bharatiya Christian Manch and national media in-charge of Muslim Rashtriya Manch Shahid Sayeed were also present in the programme.

His remarks come as Russia prepares to launch its highly telegraphed spring offensive into Ukrainian territory. Publicly, some GOP members of Congress have become split over the issue of the United States’ continued support for Ukraine, particularly the expense of supporting Ukraine against the Russian invaders.
DeSantis’ remarks put him generally in line with former President Donald Trump on the issue, who has said that defending the country from Russia is not a vital U.S. interest, but is vital for Europe.
In his statement, DeSantis emphasized the importance of prioritizing U.S. defense, particularly at the southern border.
“We cannot prioritize intervention in an escalating foreign war over the defense of our own homeland, especially as tens of thousands of Americans are dying every year from narcotics smuggled across our open border and our weapons arsenals critical for our own security are rapidly being depleted,” he said.

Greek prime minister apologizes over country’s deadliest train crash

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Sunday apologized over the country’s deadliest train disaster and said he will ask Brussels for help to overhaul the country’s railway network as mass protests continued unabated.
“As prime minister, I owe everyone, but above all the relatives of the victims, a big SORRY,” Mitsotakis wrote on Facebook. “In the Greece of 2023, it is not possible for two trains to run on opposite sides of the same track without anyone noticing.”
Two trains traveling at high speed in opposite directions on the same line collided head-on in Tempe in northern Greece on February 28, killing at least 57 people and injuring 85. A train with at least 350 on board including many university students hit a cargo train.
“We can’t, won’t and shouldn’t hide behind human error,” added the prime minister. Mitsotakis previously said on March 1 that the disaster was “primarily down to a tragic human error.”
The stationmaster for the city of Larissa faces charges of negligent homicide and admitted to some responsibility in his first court appearance on Sunday, according to Greek broadcaster ERT.
But Greece’s aging 2,550-kilometer rail network has been in desperate need of modernizing and has faced criticism for alleged mismanagement, unfit equipment and poor maintenance.
The deadly crash has prompted massive protests across the country about the government’s responsibility in the disaster as the first funerals of the victims were taking place. Thousands of people gathered on Sunday in front of the parliament in Athens, including several children. “This crime will not be covered up. We will be the voice of all the dead,” protesters chanted as they released black balloons into the sky.
Clashes erupted between police and demonstrators during the protests in Athens, the country’s second-largest city of Thessaloniki and Larissa, the city where the accident took place, with police using tear gas and sound grenades.

Protests have been staged over the last five days across the country and more have been called for the coming week. National rail services were halted as workers have been on strike since the crash.
Mitsotakis, who is preparing for elections in the spring, has promised an independent expert committee will investigate the cause of the accident. He also said he will ask the European Commission and other EU capitals for help.
“I will immediately ask the European Commission and friendly countries for their contribution to know-how so that we can finally obtain modern trains,” said Mitsotakis. “And I will fight for additional community funding to quickly maintain and upgrade the existing network.”
In the meantime, the European Public Prosecutor’s Office has launched an investigation into a contract for the upgrade of the signaling system and remote control on the Greek railway.
“I can confirm that the EPPO has indeed an ongoing investigation, looking exclusively into possible damages to the financial interests in the EU,” an EPPO spokesperson told POLITICO, without providing any details regarding the “ongoing investigations in order not to endanger their outcome.”
The Greek government quickly announced the formation of an experts’ committee to investigate the deadly train collision, causing strong reactions from the opposition who said the move doesn’t have cross-party approval and aims to take over the judicial investigation.
“It is not possible for the person being audited to be an auditor at the same time,” main opposition party Syriza said in a statement.
One member of the experts’ committee already has resigned.
