Two young Afghan girls cycle their way up to world portals; may represent their country in Olympics

    [ad_1]

On a scorching afternoon in Italy last year, two women cyclists could be seen toiling their way uphill along a steep mountain road in the Dolomite mountain range. As the heat increased, their struggle became harder but they pushed on. It was a 10 kilometre long climb but the two women seemed tireless. After 17 winding bends, the cyclists finally reached the top of the mountains and then paused to take a break. Below them lay a scenic green valley dotted with tiny houses and villages.

In Italy where cycling is a very popular sport and there are many passionate followers, the sight of two women pedaling their way up a difficult route would not be a surprising sight. But in this case, what was amazing was that these two young women were not Italians. They were from Afghanistan. Their names were Yulduz and Fariba Hashimi who were forced to abandon their hometown and settle in Italy when the Taliban authorities forbade them to continue with their beloved sport of cycling.

The story of the two sisters is fascinating. They were born in the province of Faryab in northern Afghanistan. The region forms the border with Turkmenistan and its economy is dependent upon agriculture and animal husbandry. The women of the region produce a variety of carpets known as Kilims which are sold all over Asia. But in the midst of such a rural ambience, were born two sisters whose talent lay in cycling. Unfortunately, the roads in the area are in bad condition and nobody in their right mind would ever try cycle on such roads.

But when the adventurous duo saw a neighbour’s cycle, they wanted to ride it. Aged only 14 and 17 at the time, they borrowed the cycle and learnt to ride it. They then went to a nearby town where a cycling competition was being conducted and entered their names. After one sister finished her event, she gave the cycle to the other sister who took part in her race. Amazingly, despite being beginners, one sister came first and the other came second in their respective races. From that day they were hooked.

They took part in more competitions but they had to keep it a secret from their parents who did not approve of their sporting activities. However, their parents soon found out because their photos had appeared in the local media. “They were upset at first. They asked me to stop cycling. But I didn’t give up,” said younger sister Fariba. Eventually the parents gave in.

But there was opposition from other quarters too. They were abused and threatened by people who did not want girls to take part in sports. “All I wanted to do was win races. But people threw stones at us and tried to run into us with their cars,” said Yulduz. But the duo did not give up. Soon they were called up for the national team. Everything was going well till the Taliban came to power in 2021.

They were officially instructed to stop cycling. If they continued with sport, they would face harsh penalties. It was then that the sisters realised that they would have to go away from Afghanistan if they wanted to continue their careers. Somehow, they contacted an Italian woman named Alessandra Cappellotto who was a cycling instructor.

The Italian woman decided to help them. She knocked on many doors beginning with the Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs and United Nations officials. After a lot of effort, Alessandra managed to bring the two sisters and three other girls (also cyclists) from Afghanistan to Italy. Needless to say, for the teenage girls, leaving their home was a traumatic experience. They had to say goodbye to their families, not knowing when they would see them again. Even now they become deeply emotional when they think of their parents. But the sisters have each other to share their innermost feelings.

Alessandra brought the girls to a town in the Veneto region of northern Italy, close to where she lives. She helped the group settle in their new country, organised a house for them to live in, arranged part-time jobs, and taught them the Italian language. Alessandra also provided them with brand-new cycles and a professional coach. “She was like a mother to us,” said Fariba.

Their successes continued in Italy. They have won races against European rivals and Fariba has even been inducted into a professional cycling team. Now their hopes are to represent Afghanistan in the Olympic Games. However, it all depends upon the decision of the Afghan government. Whether the government will allow women cyclists to take part in the Games or not, is the big question. But the President of the Afghanistan Cycling Federation, Fazli Ahmed Fazli is optimistic. “These women are amazing riders and I’m sure that soon they will win in big races for Afghanistan,” he said.

Arvind Kejriwal begins day-long meditation to ‘pray for country’

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: On the occasion of Holi, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal began a seven-hour-long meditation from 10 am on Wednesday.

Taking to Twitter, AAP shared pictures of Kejriwal meditating and said, “Today Kejriwal ji will pray for the country.”

Prior to starting meditation, Kejriwal paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi at Raj Ghat.

On Tuesday, Kejriwal said that those doing good work are being arrested.

Vipassana is said to be one of India’s oldest meditation practices.

The Delhi Chief Minister on Tuesday announced that he will meditate today and not celebrate Holi in the wake of the arrests of party leaders Satyendar Jain and Manish Sisodia.

In a video message, the Delhi Chief Minister said that the country’s situation is worrying and therefore he will pray for the country.
Kejriwal also said that Sisodia and Jain are in jail but no action has been taken against Adani.

“A country where the Prime Minister jails people who provide good education and good health facilities to people and supports those who rob the country, it is worrying. I will meditate and pray for the country. If you also think what Prime Minister Narendra Modi is doing is wrong and you, too, are worried about the country, then I urge you, after celebrating Holi, please take out time to pray for the country,” he added.

The Chief Minister said he was not worried about Jain and Sisodia being in jail.

“They are brave and are ready to sacrifice their lives for the country. But the sorry state of affairs in the country worries me,” he said.

Satyendar Jain was arrested in May last year and Manish Sisodia was arrested by the CBI on February 26 in connection with the Delhi Excise Policy case.

WhatsApp bans 29 lakh accounts in India as country launches grievance panel

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Meta-owned WhatsApp banned more than 29 lakh accounts in India in the month of January, a figure that is drastically lower than 36.77 lakh accounts it blocked in the country in December last year, in compliance with the new IT Rules 2021.

Between January 1 and January 31, “2,918,000 WhatsApp accounts were banned. 1,038,000 of these accounts were proactively banned, before any reports from users,” the company said in its monthly compliance report.

The most popular messaging platform, which has nearly 500 million users in the country, received 1,461 complaint reports in January in the country, and the records “actioned” were 195.

“This report contains details of the user complaints received and the corresponding action taken by WhatsApp, as well as WhatsApp’s own preventive actions to combat abuse on our platform,” said a company spokesperson.

Meanwhile, in a bid to empower millions of Indian social media users, Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, on Tuesday launched the Grievance Appellate Committee (GAC) that will look into their concerns regarding content and other issues.

The newly-formed panel, a move to strengthen the country’s digital laws to tame the Big Tech companies, will look into appeals by users against decisions of social media platforms.

The IT Ministry last month notified to establish three Grievance Appellate Committees (GACs) as required under the recently amended IT Rules, 2021.

In a major push towards an open, safe, trusted and accountable Internet, the Ministry of Electronics and IT has notified some amendments aimed at protecting the rights of ‘Digital Nagriks’.

  • Despite Lula, I will not work against my country, says Bolsonaro

    [ad_1]

Former president stated that Brazil did not end on January 1st; he must stay until March 15th in the US

the former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) said this Monday (27.Feb.2023) that despite having “aversion” to the current Chief Executive, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT), he will not work against Brazil.

“Despite having aversion to what is currently in politics there in the Executive, I will not work against my country”, said Bolsonaro at the Florida SA Summit event in the United States. He was applauded after the statement.

    Watch (39min48s):

Bolsonaro is expected to stay in the US until March 15, extending his stay in the US by at least 18 days. The Executive Secretariat of the Civil House of the Presidency of the Republic authorized the removal of 3 employees who accompanied the former president abroad.

Although Bolsonaro’s statement was in a mild tone, during his participation in the event, he made several criticisms of the current government. He even mocked the current Minister of Sports, Ana Moser, and the former president Dilma Rousseff (PT).

“Now this type of political subdivision is back in Brazil. There’s no way to go right […] I just saw the volleyball player, Ana Moser, talking about being Minister of Sports. Dilma is a PhD close to her”said Bolsonaro.

“In 2010, it took approximately 100 days to open a company in Brazil. 100 with ‘c’ is not with ‘s’ no”said the former president.

Bolsonaro further strengthened that he did not take the vaccine against covid-19. On February 17, Chief Minister of the CGU (Controladoria Geral da União), Vinícius de Carvalho, confirmed the existence of a vaccine record of the former president against the disease. Former Minister of Health, Marcelo Queiroga, denied.

“I didn’t get the vaccine. They accused me of having taken it now, at a health center on the outskirts of São Paulo”said Bolsonaro at an event in the US.

About the January 8 prisoners, Bolsonaro said they are being treated like “terrorists”and that among those arrested are “household heads, mothers and grandmothers”.

“In Brazil, everything has become fake news, undermining the democratic rule of law. We now have, it will be 2 months, 900 people arrested, treated like terrorists who were not found with even a penknife. Heads of families, mothers, grandmothers”he stated.

On social media, state deputy Bruno Engler (PL-MG) published images of long lines of businessmen to take a photo with the former president. See the log:

  • Can’t help a country if their basic industry is terrorism: Jaishankar on Pak

Can’t help a country if their basic industry is terrorism: Jaishankar on Pak

    [ad_1]

Pune: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday virtually dismissed the idea of helping Pakistan to come out of its economic mess.

Speaking at the annual Asia Economic Dialogue organised by the external affairs ministry here, Jaishankar said he will consider the local public sentiment while making a big decision.

“I would have a pulse (on) what do my people feel about it. And I think you know the answer,” he said.

Pakistan is grappling with an economic crisis and has not been successful in getting an agreement from multilateral institutions either. In the recent past, India has helped neighbours like Sri Lanka as it struggled to come out of its economic woes and regularly helps others in the neighbourhood as well.

However, when it comes to Pakistan, the fundamental issue impacting the New Delhi-Islamabad ties is terrorism, Jaishankar said, adding that one must not be in denial of this problem.

“No country is ever going to come out of a difficult situation and become a prosperous power if its basic industry is terrorism.

“Just as a country has to fix its economic issues, a country has to fix its political issues too, a country has to fix its social issues,” he said without naming Pakistan.

Jaishankar also made it clear that it is in nobody’s interest to see a country get into severe economic difficulties, and that too a neighbour.

Once a country is in the throes of a serious economic problem, it has to make policy choices to get out of it, the career diplomat-turned-politician said, adding that others cannot solve it for the country.

The world can only provide options and support systems, Jaishankar said, making it clear that Pakistan will have to make “tough choices”.

He said India has also undergone the same challenges several times in its modern history, with the last one being 30 years ago with the balance of payment crisis.

Meanwhile, Jaishankar said ever since Narendra Modi came to power in 2014, the country’s approach to the neighbouring countries has undergone a perceptible change and also reminded all about the Prime Minister’s decision to call heads of state for the swearing-in function to start a new relationship.

Citing the case of Maldives, he said India’s help in the recent past includes the Greater Male project and also added that he was present at the foundation stone laying event a few weeks ago.

India is also buying or selling power with many of its neighbours, Jaishankar said, adding that it recently started buying power from Nepal.

Going forward, the country is also mulling to up its focus on education and healthcare spending in the neighbourhood, Jaishankar said.

He also assured that India will also be using its G-20 presidency to give a voice to the problems of the ‘global south’ and asserted that India is the best-placed country to do that.

The prime minister and his top ministers have spoken to 125 countries in the past month in India’s effort to be an effective voice of the global south, Jaishankar said.

Speaking at the same event, Maldives’ Minister of Finance Ibrahim Ameer said climate finance is a big challenge and expected help to flow through on the commitment at the earliest. His counterpart from Bhutan, Lyonpo Namgay Tshering said an easing of global financial conditions is also the need of the hour.

Jaishankar said there are multiple second and third-order impacts of the major world events and policy decisions, which India will be flagging to the world as part of its G-20 presidency.

The EAM also said that the G-20, with nearly 200 events across the country, is a marketing of India to influential people across the world by exposing them to cultural and socio-economic changes taking place in the country.

  • How Volodymyr Zelenskyy United His Country — With Comedy

How Volodymyr Zelenskyy United His Country — With Comedy

    [ad_1]

    politico zelensky horz2

When Ukraine became independent in 1991 amid the dissolution of the Soviet Union, it was a country in search of a national idea. This wasn’t straightforward: The ancestors of Ukraine’s citizens played different roles in a national history that included both great achievements and bloodshed. People searched for something beyond a belief in their constitution that could bring them together across differences in politics and life experience.

Ukrainians have long struggled with forces that threatened to divide their society. Under Soviet rule, Moscow’s policies of Russification in Ukraine had contributed to a situation that made independent Ukraine seem divided along the Dnipro River, with Ukrainian speakers on one side and Russian speakers on the other. Today, the fact that many Ukrainians still speak Russian in everyday life is in many ways a legacy of those Soviet-era policies — including the death by starvation of millions of Ukrainians because of grain confiscation, and the summary executions of hundreds of Ukrainian artists, writers and intellectuals — not an expression of brotherhood with Russia, no matter what the Kremlin might say.

But Ukraine has never been such a binary place. Ukrainians have a long multicultural history that includes not only ethnic Ukrainians but also people who identify as Jewish (including Zelenskyy), Bulgarian, Crimean Tatar, Hungarian, Greek, Korean, Polish, Romani, Romanian, Russian and others, whose languages are still spoken in Ukraine today. In his 2020 presidential New Year’s greeting, Zelenskyy acknowledged the nature of Ukraine’s diversity by speaking not only in Ukrainian, but also in Hungarian, Crimean Tatar and Russian.

In 2014, when Russia annexed Crimea and invaded Ukraine’s Donbas region under a thinly veiled pretext of supporting Russian-speaking separatists, Ukrainians largely united against these violations of their country’s territory. At that time, Zelenskyy’s comedy troupe voiced in metaphor Ukrainians’ frustration at Russia’s incessant lies and refusal to let them go and their pain at the tepid response of the international community, singing of “European ‘brothers’ who traded us for gas.”

During those years, the stress of the Russian occupation of Crimea and Donbas threatened Ukrainians’ unity. Some noticed an opportunity to win national elections if parts of the Russified east were no longer part of Ukraine, murmuring in private about being ready to “let the Donbas go.” But even then, still working as a comedian, Zelenskyy was not ready to abandon his compatriots in Russia-occupied areas. In their comedy skits, Zelenskyy and his troupe amplified their longstanding criticisms of Russian chauvinism, turning the tables to pantomime and mock Russians’ longstanding ethnic slurs, lies about Ukrainians and attitudes about Crimea.

At that time, Zelenskyy and his comedy troupe performed mainly in the Russian language, reaching Ukrainians who used Russian in daily life and came from regions where people sometimes felt alienated from politics in the capital, and who previously had sometimes struggled to see themselves as sharing common experiences and identities with their compatriots who spoke the state language at home and in daily life. By making Ukrainians from different regions feel seen and valued, Zelenskyy invited them into a patriotism that held up love of Ukraine as a central value but did not insist on a particular ethnic or private linguistic identity. He and his troupe showed how Russian-speaking Ukrainians, who did not think of themselves as nationalists, could identify as Ukrainian patriots.

As a comedian, Zelenskyy and his troupe used an approach to thinking about Ukraine’s past that differed from the us-versus-them thinking that long dominated some public discussion about politics in Ukraine. Performing songs that reminded Ukrainians of shared experiences, he and his troupe not only validated local identities, but admitted mistakes and imperfections, acknowledged disagreement, and fostered a generous, inclusive idea of what it meant to be Ukrainian.

Pak Defence Minister acknowledges country has already gone bankrupt

    [ad_1]

Sialkot: Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif suggested on Saturday that one-fourth of Pakistans debt could be paid off if only two golf clubs built on expensive government land are sold, media reports said.

The minister acknowledged that the country has already gone bankrupt, and that the solution to the country’s problems lies within the country, and not with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Samaa TV reported.

He also blamed the establishment, bureaucracy, and politicians for the current economic situation.

Asif revealed that he has been in the Parliament for 33 years and had witnessed the country’s politics being disgraced for 32 of those years.

The PML-N leader also pointed out that golf clubs had been built on government land, and that selling two of them would reduce one-fourth of Pakistan’s debt, Samaa TV reported.

Asif also expressed his condolences for the loss of personnel in the fight against terrorism, saying that security agencies are working tirelessly to combat the issue.

He claimed that terrorists were allowed to settle in the country two years ago.

Asif also said that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will announce major austerity measures in all government institutions to control the fiscal deficit by minimising government expenditures, The Express Tribune reported.

Meanwhile, the opposition also proposed to the government to take some bold decisions and implement austerity measures to cut its expenditures in order to steer the country out of the economic crisis.

Opposition leader Shahzad Waseem said that the rulers had closed corruption cases involving Rs 1,100 billion and the Pakistani people were bearing the brunt of it. He also expressed fear that the new budgetary measures would stoke inflation, The Express Tribune reported.

In a racist tirade, Nikki Haley asked to go back to ‘her own country’

    [ad_1]

New York: Calling Indian-American Nikki Haley a ‘bimbo’ and ‘preposterous creature’, conservative pundit and author Ann Coutler asked the Republican presidential candidate to return to India.

“Why don’t you go back to your own country?” Coulter said, making an appearance on the ‘The Mark Simone Show’ podcast this week.

Born Nimrata ‘Nikki’ Randhawa, Haley announced her presidential bid on February 14 in a video message where she proudly talked about her Indian heritage.

She had said that as a brown girl, growing up in a black-and-white world, she saw the promise of America unfold before her.

“Her candidacy did remind me that I need to immigrate to India so I can demand they start taking down parts of their history,” Coutler said.

Coutler’s rants did not stop at just Haley, she targeted India as well, the NBC News reported.

“What’s with the worshipping of the cows? They’re all starving over there. Did you know they have a rat temple, where they worship rats?”

Coulter said that Haley’s decision to remove the Confederate flag from the grounds of South Carolina’s Statehouse following the 2015 mass shooting at a predominantly black church in Charleston, angered her.

She slammed Haley, calling her a “Bimbo” and a “preposterous creature” for her decision.”This is my country, lady,” she said.

“I’m not an American Indian, and I don’t like them taking down all the monuments,” NBC News reported Coutler as saying.

Haley, so far, has not responded to Coutler’s comments.

Haley has been a rising star in the Republican party and long expected to run for the White House, IANS reported earlier.

She is a former two-term Governor of South Carolina, one of America’s most conservative states, and former Ambassador to the UN, a cabinet-rank position she held in the administration of then President Donald Trump.

Haley is the third Indian American to seek the Week House, following Bobby Jindal in 2015-16 and Kamala Harris in 2019-20.
