    Apple’s Emergency SOS via satellite now available in 6 more countries

    San Francisco: Apple announced that its safety service Emergency SOS via satellite is now available to customers in six more countries — Austria, Belgium, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Portugal.

    Available on all iPhone 14 models, the technology enables users to message with emergency services while outside of cellular and Wi-Fi coverage.

    Additionally, if users want to reassure friends and family of their whereabouts while travelling off the grid, they can now open the Find My app and share their location via satellite, the company said in a statement.

    “Emergency SOS via satellite is a great example of technology that could keep our citizens safe. Cellular or Wi-Fi coverage is a key improvement that Apple made available with the iPhone 14,” said Jan van Loosbroek, director of the Dutch National Control Room Organisation.

    With Emergency SOS via satellite, if a user is not able to reach emergency services because no cellular or Wi-Fi coverage is available, an easy-to-use interface appears on iPhone to get the user help utilising a satellite connection.

    The service will be included for free for two years starting at the time of activation of a new iPhone 14 model.

    Emergency SOS by satellite and Find My by satellite require iOS 16.4 for users in these new six countries.

    With iOS 16.4, a user dialling a local emergency number will automatically be redirected to 112, the European emergency number, if the call fails due to no cellular or Wi-Fi connection, making it possible to use emergency SOS via satellite even without dialling 112.

    Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, the UK and the US are the countries where the Emergency SOS by satellite service is already available.

    San Francisco: Meta has announced that it is expanding its “age verification test” on Instagram to six more countries, including Europe and Canada.

    “Starting today, we’re beginning to expand our age verification test on Instagram to more countries in Europe, Mexico, Canada, South Korea, Australia and Japan,” the company said in an updated blog post on Thursday.

    It further mentioned that it is planning to make the age verification tools available in more countries globally within the next few months.

    In June last year, the company had initially started testing new options for Instagram users to verify their age, starting with people based in the US.

    Later, in October, Meta expanded this test to India and Brazil.

    If someone attempts to edit their date of birth on the platform from under the age of 18 to 18 or over, they have to verify their age using one of three options — upload their ID, record a video selfie or ask mutual friends to verify their age.

    According to the company, this will make sure “that teens and adults are in the right experience for their age group.”

    “In addition to testing the new menu of options to verify people’s ages, we also use artificial intelligence (AI) to understand if someone is a teen or an adult,” it added.

    Washington: Indian-American Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley has vowed that if voted to power, she will cut every cent in foreign aid for countries which hate America.

    She mentioned Pakistan, China, Iraq and other countries, saying “a strong America doesn’t pay off the bad guys”.

    The 51-year-old two-term Governor of South Carolina and the former US Ambassador to the United Nations formally launched her 2024 presidential bid earlier this month.

    “I will cut every cent in foreign aid for countries that hate us. A strong America doesn’t pay off the bad guys. A proud America doesn’t waste our people’s hard-earned money. And the only leaders who deserve our trust are those who stand up to our enemies and stand beside our friends,” she wrote in an op-ed in the New York Post.

    She said that America has spent USD 46 billion on foreign aid last year, which is given to countries like China, Pakistan, and Iraq. American taxpayers deserve to know where that money is going and what it’s doing, she added.

    “They will be shocked to find that much of it goes to fund anti-American countries and causes. As president, I’ll put a stop to this fiasco,” she said.

    According to Haley, the Biden administration resumed military aid to Pakistan, though it’s home to at least a dozen terrorist organisations and its government is deeply in hock to China.

    She said that as the US ambassador to the UN, she strongly supported then president Donald Trump’s decision to cut nearly USD 2 billion of military aid to Pakistan because that country supported terrorists who kill American troops.

    “It was a major victory for our troops, our taxpayers and our vital interests, but it didn’t go nearly far enough. We’ve still given them way too much in other aid. As president, I will block every penny,” she added.

    She said that the Biden administration restored half a billion dollars to “a corrupt United Nations agency” that’s supposed to help the Palestinian people but in fact covers for deeply anti-Semitic propaganda against our ally Israel. She added the US has given Iraq more than USD 1 billion over the last few years, even though its government is getting closer to Iran.

    She said American taxpayers still give money to “Communist China for ridiculous environment programs, despite the obvious threat China poses to Americans.”

    “We give money to Belarus, which is Russian dictator Vladimir Putin’s closest ally. We even give money to Communist Cuba a country our own government has designated as a state sponsor of terrorism,” she said, adding that it’s been happening for decades under presidents of both parties.

    “I am running for president to restore our nation’s strength, our national pride and our people’s trust. Backing American allies and friends like Israel and Ukraine is smart. Sending our tax dollars to enemies isn’t,” she added.

    “At the UN, I put together a book of how much money we give other countries and how often they vote with us. It was eye-opening. We are giving huge amounts of cash to countries that vote against us most of the time. That doesn’t make sense. I’ll stop it. America can’t buy our friends. We’ll certainly never buy off our enemies,” she added.

    Less than a fortnight after entering the race to the White House, Haley is leading against President Joe Biden in a hypothetical match, according to a latest opinion poll on Friday. But she trails badly against leading GOP candidate former president Trump, Rasmussen Report said based on a survey it conducted between February 16 to 19.

    Among the Republicans she comes at the third position after Trump (52 per cent) and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (24 per cent).

    Born Nimrata Nikki Randhawa to immigrant Punjabi Sikh parents, Haley is the third Indian-American to run for the US presidency in three consecutive election cycles. Bobby Jindal ran in 2016 and Vice President Kamala Harris in 2020.

    Before entering the presidential ballot, Haley has to win the Republican Party’s presidential primary which will start in January next year. The next US presidential election is scheduled to be held on November 5, 2024.

    Talent from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) remains in high demand by companies based abroad, as global recruitment continues to grow, according to Deel’s State of Global Hiring Report.

    Deel tracked about 260,000 employment contracts in 160 countries during the period from January to December 2022.

    The top four countries, which employ the majority of workers from the UAE, are the United States (US), United Kingdom (UK), Canada, and Israel.

    Most of the companies related to information technology, financial services, marketing and advertising take UAE workers on board. More importantly, senior management roles, such as managing partners and executives, are also beginning to gain popularity in the four countries as confidence in remote hiring continues to grow.

    The Deel study found that 37.6 per cent of employees in the UAE are between the ages of 25 and 34; 28.7 per cent were between the ages of 35 and 44; and 25.1 per cent belong to the age group from 16 to 24 years.

    SRINAGAR: The death toll in the Turkey-Syria earthquake has crossed 25000 people as rescuers from more than 90 countries, including India, are desperately looking for survivors in the debris. Since February 6, when the twin earthquakes flattened a vast belt straddling the border, the region has witnessed more than 650 aftershocks, reports in international media quoting AFD said.

    “This is the worst earthquake and perhaps the world’s largest inland disaster,” a Kashmiri student in Turkey said. “Seismologists say that the width of the fault line is between 150 km to 200 km, which means the destruction caused by the earthquake would be huge because the fault line is quite wide. They say it was a shallow earthquake as its epicentre was merely 18 km deep from the crust of the earth.”

    In Turkey, the death toll has crossed 22327 people as 80,104 survived injured. In Syria, the total number of deaths stands at 3,553, including 2,166 in rebel-held areas in the northwest, according to the White Helmets civil defence group. There have been 1,387 deaths in government-controlled parts of Syria, according to Syrian state media. The total number of injured people in Syria across all affected territories stands at 5,273, with 2,326 in government-controlled areas and 2,950 in rebel-held areas.

    Forecasting by rescue and relief workers suggest millions stand rendered homeless including 53 lakh in Syria alone.

    Most of the people were asleep when the disaster hit the region. AFAD, Turkey’s disaster management authority, is being helped by 7800 rescue workers from more than 90 countries. Two major teams from India are part of the rescue and relief operations.

    “The first three days are critical for evacuation and saving lives during a disaster. But miracles do happen, even today people are being rescued alive,” the student, referring to the reports appearing in the Turkish media said.

    The student said that the major problem was managing translators who could help international teams to interact with the host population. Most of the international teams speak English but Turks prefer Turkish over every other language.

    “Apart from AFAD translators, international students and international workers have joined the rescue and relief work and they are helping the international rescuers to communicate with the people.”

    India launched a search and rescue operation to aid Syria and Turkey named as Operation Dost. “Our teams are working day and night as a part of ‘operation dost’. They will keep giving their best to ensure maximum lives and property are saved. In this critical time, India stands firmly with the people of Turkiye” tweeted prime minister Narendra Modi.

    There was a lot of reportage about Turkey getting preference in rescue and relief, unlike the war-torn Syrian belts. This led to certain changes in the last few days.

    The US has temporarily eased its sanctions on Syria in an effort to speed up aid deliveries to the country’s north-west, where almost no humanitarian assistance has arrived despite the deaths of thousands in this week’s earthquake. “I don’t think that this license will suddenly open the floodgates and allow for unhindered humanitarian access and delivery in Syria,” said Delaney Simon, a senior analyst at the International Crisis Group’s US programme, was quoted as saying by the Guardian. “There are just too many other access issues. But I hope that the license will ease the concerns of financial providers, the private sector, and other actors, to show them that sanctions won’t be a risk for them to engage in Syria.” The United States will provide $85 million in humanitarian aid to Turkey and Syria.

    Rescue teams from Russia have also been sent to both Syria and Turkey.

    New Delhi: Amid declining Covid cases in the country, the Center on Thursday relaxed the travel norms for passengers from China and other six countries. However, the random testing of 2 per cent travelers coming to India will continue.

    Updating the ‘Guidelines for International Arrivals’, the Health Ministry has dropped the existing requirements of pre-departure Covid-19 testing and uploading of Self-Health Declaration for international travellers coming from/via China, Singapore, Hong Kong, South Korea, Thailand, and Japan.

    In a letter to the Civil Aviation Ministry, the Health Ministry has said: “As has been witnessed in the last 4 weeks, these countries are witnessing a sustained and significant decline in trajectory of Covid-19 cases. Further, as per World Health Organisation’s latest situational update on Covid-19, a decline of 89 per cent in the number of newly confirmed cases in the past 28 days has been noted globally as compared to 28 days prior to that.”

    “Meanwhile, India has continued to witness a declining trajectory, with less than 100 new cases/day are being reported. In view of the above, this Ministry is updating its ‘Guidelines for International Arrivals’, and dropping the existing requirements of pre-departure Covid-19 testing and uploading of Self-Health Declaration on Ministry of Civil Aviation’s ‘Air Suvidha’ portal applicable for international travellers coming from/via China, Singapore, Hong Kong, Republic of Korea, Thailand and Japan,” it said in the letter.

    Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan has said in the letter, “In order to monitor infections due to mutated variants of SARS-CoV-2 among international travellers to India, the present exercise of random testing of 2 per cent travellers to India (irrespective of country of origin) upon arrival India shall continue.”

    Kuwait: Kuwait ranked first among the Arab countries and second in the Middle East in terms of organ donation, according to the Kuwaiti Society for Organ Transplantation, Kuwait News Agency (KUNA).

    During a ceremony held to honor and register new donors on Thursday, the association’s head Mustafa Al-Moussawi said, “In 2022, Kuwait witnessed about 50 kidney transplants from 50 deceased and 49 similar operations from the living.”

    He stated that the total number of local donors remains small compared to the GCC, Middle Eastern, and Asian countries, explaining that the aforementioned campaign aims to increase the number of donation card holders from 17,000 donors currently to 30,000.

    He pointed out that organ transplants include the heart, lung, liver, pancreas, children’s intestines, cornea, and parts of the arteries. He added he hoped to reopen the liver transplant program after it was stopped due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

    The process of organ donation in Kuwait dates back to 1979 but it was limited to donation from the living, through relatives, and in 1996 a program began to donate brain deaths.

    New Delhi: RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, senior Sangh leaders Indresh Kumar, Krishna Gopal and Ram Lal have been regularly holding interactions with Muslim intellectuals for some time now.

    Recently, a new episode of these interactions was witnessed in the national capital in which India, and along with over 10 Muslim countries, began a fresh campaign in the biggest ever non-governmental exercise. In this, unity in diversity, harmony, cooperation, education, culture, literature, coordination, religious restraint and respect and trade have been emphasised.

    Under the joint aegis of the Himalaya Hind Rashtra Group, Forum for Awareness of National Security (FANS) and School of Language Literature and Culture Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), a two-day international seminar was held at the Convention Centre of JNU on the topic of historical, cultural and economic links between India and Central Asia.

    A large number of Muslim intellectuals participated in the meeting.

    Diplomats, high commissioners, scholars and intellectuals from at least 12 Muslim countries participated in the international seminar at the JNU under the leadership of senior RSS leader Indresh Kumar.

    Those who attended included Iraj Elahi from Iran, Firat Sonal from Turkey, Lukmon Baba Kolajdeh from Tajikistan, Nurlan Zalgaisbaev and Habibullo Mirzozoda from Kazakhstan, Asin Isaev from Kyrgyzstan, Dilsod Akhmatov and Aziz Bartoun from Uzbekistan, Shalar Geldinjarov from Turkmenistan, Ganbold from Mongolia. Dambajav, Armen Martirosyan from Armenia, Farid Mamundzai from Afghanistan and Ashraf Shikhaliyev from Azerbaija.

    The foreign participants during their speech underlined that “India, as our elder brother should play the role of Vishwaguru”.

    On this, Indresh Kumar said: “Our concept of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam is to treat everyone as a family. India is a country full of diversity.”

    Ambassadors, High Commissioners and representatives of more than 50 participants of 12 countries demanded that a mission document, which can also be called a vision document, be prepared on the entire programme under the leadership of leader Indresh Kumar.

    In the seminar, Subhas Sarkar, Union Minister of State for Education; Iqbal Singh Lalpura, Chairman, National Commission for Minorities; Indira Gandhi Kala Kendra Secretary, Sachidanand Joshi; General Secretary of Rashtriya Suraksha Jagran Manch, Golok Behari and Convener of International Seminar, Prof. from Jamia Millia Islamia M Mahtab Alam Rizvi also participated.

    During an exclusive interview with IANS on the sidelines of the event, Indresh Kumar also spoke about some current issues.

    IANS: How can we end terrorism?

    Kumar: Terrorism is the enemy of peace, development, harmony and humanity. Bombs, ammo, shells, bullets or stones are not the solution to any problem. There is no place for anti-social things like terrorism and Maoism in any civilised society, so everyone should unite and strongly oppose it. The delegates said that they will not allow it to flourish in their countries and also appealed to the world that all countries should unite against terrorism.

    IANS: Is religion becoming an issue in harmony?

    Kumar: Criticising religion, religious scriptures, religious places, gods, goddesses, deities, prophets etc., creates violence and anarchy, which is condemnable. That’s why everyone should follow their own religion and not disrespect other religions, thus walking on the path of peace, unity, brotherhood and harmony.

    IANS: Religious conversion is becoming an issue in society…

    Kumar: The Chief Patron of the Forum for Awareness of National Security (FANS) said that it is necessary to stop religious conversions for world peace and development.

    IANS: There was a buzz in the seminar that peace and harmony cannot be established with India. Would you elaborate on this?

    Kumar: It was discussed in the seminar that the path of world peace and progress passes through Asia and peace and harmony cannot be established in the world without India. It was also agreed that in addition to the air route, mutual unity and integrity should be promoted through road and sea routes.

    “Andhakar Mitayenge, Prakash Layenge” was also a collective voice that was heard in the seminar.

    Riyadh: The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries “strongly condemned” Friday’s armed attack on Azerbaijan’s embassy in the Iranian capital of Tehran.

    On Friday morning, January 27, a man armed with a Kalashnikov-style rifle stormed the Azerbaijani embassy in the Iranian capital, killing the head of security in the diplomatic center and wounding two guards.

    A video clip circulating on social media showed what appeared to be broken glass and damage to a door inside the embassy.

    Police in Tehran said they had arrested a suspect and were investigating the motive behind the attack.

    GCC countries condemn

    The six GCC countries— Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, and Oman strongly condemned and denounced the armed attack on Azerbaijan’s embassy in Tehran.

    In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed theit countries complete rejection of all forms of violence and voiced solidarity with the Republic of Azerbaijan and its people, calling for the respect of diplomatic missions and punishing the perpetrators.

    The six GCC countries foreign ministries also expressed its sincere condolences and sympathy to the government and people of Azerbaijan, and to the families of the victims of this heinous crime, and its wishes for a speedy recovery for the injured.

    Gulf Cooperation Council condemn

    The Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council, Nayef Al-Hajraf, condemned the armed attack on the Azerbaijani embassy in the Iranian capital, stressing the need to protect diplomatic facilities according to the norms and charters that regulate diplomatic work.
