US Consulate in Hyderabad moves to own facility built at cost of $340 million

Hyderabad: The US Consulate General in Hyderabad on Monday opened operations at its new facility at Nanakramguda.

Fifteen years after commencing the operations from historic Paigah Palace in Begumpet, the Consulate has moved to its own building in the Financial District, Nanakramguda, an information technology cluster in western part of the city.

“Today marks a milestone in the US-India Strategic Partnership,” US Consul General, Hyderabad, Jennifer Larson, said.

“At a cost of $340 million, our new consulate facility in Hyderabad is an investment in the US relationship with India. We look forward to increasing our staff – including visa officers – in order to continue expanding US-India ties in the months and years to come,”” she said.

Established in 2008 at the historic Paigah Palace, the US Consulate General in Hyderabad is the first US diplomatic office to open in India since India’s independence. Groundbreaking at the new location in Nanakramguda took place in 2017.

Located on a 12-acre site, the new consulate embodies the US State Department’s mission to provide safe, secure, functional, and resilient facilities for U.S. diplomacy. The $340 million construction project included $70 million in local investment and employed a combined workforce of over 1,000 American, Indian, and third-country nationals.

The US Consulate General represents the US in the Indian states of Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Odisha. The US-India relationship in the region spans a wide range of key issues, including higher education and cultural programs, military cooperation, health and environmental issues, and commercial ties, the US Consulate said in a statement.

The US Consulate General Hyderabad issued more than 18,000 student visas during 2022, while US companies have invested billions of dollars in the region’s tech, defense, aerospace, and pharmaceutical sectors.

Through the Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation, the Consulate works with local partners to preserve historic monuments, while Consulate staff work with local journalists to combat disinformation and expand coverage of climate change. US and Indian militaries also teamed up for joint exercises based out of Eastern Naval Command in Visakhapatnam, it said.

Visa applicants who have scheduled interviews should now go to the US Consulate’s new facility in Nanakramguda for their interviews.

All other visa services – including biometrics appointments, “dropbox” appointments (interview waiver), and passport pickup – will continue to take place at the Visa Application Center (VAC), located at the Lower Concourse, HITEC City Metro Station, Madhapur, Hyderabad.

  • India’s IT collection cost lowest in the world: Hyderabad Commissioner

India’s IT collection cost lowest in the world: Hyderabad Commissioner

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The income tax collection cost that the Income Tax (IT) department incurs in India is the lowest in the world, said Shishir Agarwal, chief commissioner of IT (Hyderabad) here on Thursday. He added that India spends 57 paise per Rs 100 of tax collected.

The IT commissioner added that the United Kingdom spends spends 73 paise, Japan 174 paise, Germany 135 paise, Canada 150 paise, and France 111 paise for every Rs 100 IT collected respectively. “The USA is the only country that spends less than us,” stated Mr Agarwal, while addressing a Seminar hosted by the FTCCI  on ‘Post Union Budget 2023-2024—Implication for Trade and Industries’ in Hyderabad.

“I come from a department which people love to hate.  No one wants us to visit them in our official capacity.  But, we are doing really well.  The numbers reflect our performance.  For the year 2021-2022, we have collected an all time record tax. The net direct tax collections (income tax and corporate tax) reached an all time high of Rs 14.09 lakh,” he said, according to a press release from FTCII.

The IT commissioner in Hyderabad also added that 65% of IT returns in India filed were processed and refunds were made within 24 hours of filing. “We have moved to a faceless tax process, which is the first in the world.  We understand tax payers’ aspirations and bring tailor-made initiatives for the benefit of tax payers for a better tomorrow. India’s time has come now,” Shishir Agarwal opined.

Speaking about the Union Budget released a day earlier, the Chief Commissioner of IT in Hyderabad called it ‘progressive’. Mr. Anil Agarwal, FTCCI president, said that union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman came out with a “people centric budget”. Over 200 professionals, experts from different walks of life attended the seminar.

Murphy administration bought eight new SUVs — at a cost of $521K — with federal Covid funds

state of the state new jersey 46382

The budget, however, did require the administration to detail the spending to JBOC.

“NJSP is responsible for the security and transportation of State officials, including the Governor and Lieutenant Governor,” the Department of the Treasury memo states. “As part of their many responsibilities, these officials provide leadership and lend support to the State’s COVID-19 recovery efforts at vaccination sites, hospitals, nursing homes, long-term care facilities and other affected sites.”

The purchases were also mentioned briefly in the Murphy administration’s New Jersey Recovery Plan report last summer, though they didn’t attract any scrutiny at the time.

The eight Chevrolet Suburbans are for use by the Executive Protection Unit, according to Trooper Charles Marchan, a spokesperson for the State Police.

“American Rescue Plan Funding was used to purchase eight Chevrolet Suburbans that went to the State Police’s Executive Protection Unit to support the travel requirements of government officials, including COVID-19-related engagements such as vaccine site visits, hospital tours, and pandemic meetings,” Marchan said in a statement.

The Treasury department memo says the state is eligible to use the funds under a federal regulation that allows them for “costs to improve the design and execution of programs responding to the COVID-19 pandemic and to administer or improve the efficacy of programs addressing the public health emergency or its negative economic impacts.”

Assemblymember Hal Wirths (R-Sussex), a member of JBOC and the Assembly minority budget officer, said the expenditure’s connection to the pandemic is “a stretch.”

“It’s legal, but I think it’s not the intention of the federal law to buy vehicles. Especially now. That’s what we’ve been so frustrated with, as budget officer, is the slowness of getting this money out,” Wirths said, referring to Republican complaints that the state government, controlled by Democrats, has been slow to appropriate federal coronavirus relief funds.

“I don’t think it’s a priority, especially this late after Covid,” Wirths said. “If they did it two or three years ago you might have a little more of an argument.”

Syrian refugees cost Lebanon over $40bn since 2011: FM

    [ad_1]

Beirut: The displacement of Syrians has cost Lebanon more than $40 billion since the civil war broke out in the Arab nation in 2011, Lebanese Foreign Minister Abdallah Bou Habib said.

The minister made the remarks during his meeting with UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon Joanna Wronecka in Beirut, Xinhua news agency reported.

“Lebanon’s hosting of a big number of Syrian refugees is beyond the country’s capacity,” Bou Habib said.

The Foreign Minister also called on the international community to recognize and appreciate Lebanon’s contribution to the world by taking in millions of Syrian refugees.

According to the UN Refugee Agency, Lebanon is currently facing its worst socioeconomic crisis in decades and hosts the highest number of refugees per capita and per square kilometer worldwide.

The government estimates 1.5 million Syrian refugees and 13,715 refugees of other nationalities.

Ninety percent of Syrian refugees are living in extreme poverty, with the majority of them settled in the Bekaa region.

While prices are skyrocketing due to a severe economic crisis, almost half of the Lebanese and 2/3 of the 1.5 million Syrian refugees are food insecure.

Some 90 percent of Syrians, 73 percent of Palestinian refugees, and over 50 percent of Lebanese households currently need assistance.

Lebanon has struggled to deal with emergencies like the Beirut port blast, Covid-19, and a recently declared cholera outbreak.

  • Trend to mend: cost of living crisis puts darning back in vogue

Trend to mend: cost of living crisis puts darning back in vogue

    [ad_1]

Thrifty and eco-friendly consumers seeking to make do and mend rather than splash out on new threads are being credited with boosting sales of darning equipment and clothing repair products including patches, colour dye and thimbles.

The trend to mend means haberdashery – associated with the shopping experience as depicted in the1970s sitcom Are You Being Served? – is back in fashion, according to John Lewis.

The department store chain said it had sold out of darning needles and that sales of darning wool had doubled year-on-year, while sales of repair products such as patches and repair tape were up 61%.

    .

Susan Kennedy, the head of haberdashery at John Lewis, said: “Whether they’re looking to rejuvenate their clothes, or have been inspired by the likes of Tom Daley’s knitting efforts last year, we’re seeing more and more customers turn to sewing, stitching and knitting.”

She said sales of dressmaking accessories, such as thimbles, dressmakers chalk and pattern-making accessories were up 15% year-on-year.

Many people are learning skills that their grandmothers took for granted, thanks to YouTube, Instagram and TikTok, with such pastimes given space to flourish during the pandemic lockdowns.

BBC One’s The Great British Sewing Bee has also fuelled the trend for stitching, while influencers such as Lily Fulop, Katrina Rodabaugh and Marlen Meiners promote fashionable ideas such as “visible mending” – making repairs look like beautiful artistic additions to a garment, such as embroidered flowers, rather than ugly fix-ups.

Patrick Grant, the host of The Great British Sewing Bee and founder of the Community Clothing label, said: “Mending in all its forms (simple sewing repairs, patching and darning) is most definitely on the rise. The web is filled with useful how-to videos on all aspects of making our clothes last longer.

“I think there are two things driving the rise. I suspect that the cost of living crisis has quite a bit to do with it. If we can save money by doing simple repairs then why wouldn’t we?

    .

“But I think this trend has been growing for several years now and I think it’s largely been driven by our desire to consume less and throw less away for environmental reasons.”

Businesses and individuals have been prompted to take action amid evidence that the fashion industry is contributing more to the climate crisis than the aviation and shipping industries combined – 10% of global emissions. If trends continue, the industry could account for a quarter of the world’s carbon budget by 2050.

Grant said that “water pollution, soil erosion, and the mountain of plastic it leaves behind” only added to its impact.

Research by the waste charity Wrap has found that extending a garment’s life by just nine months can reduce its carbon, waste and water footprints by 20%-30%.

With that in mind, some retailers – including Zara and H&M – have begun offering repairs with an eye on the “circular economy” – which promotes the idea of reusing and recycling items.

Specialist services are also springing up to feed the trend – such as the Make Nu and Restory, which has an outlet at Harvey Nichols and works with the luxury online seller Farfetch.

Layla Sargent, the founder of The Seam – which connects skilled menders, cleaners and restorers with the public – said sales rose almost 300% year-on-year in 2022 with 70% of its sales from repairs, restoration and cleaning.

Sargent said her company was flourishing because people simply no longer have the skills to repair their clothes, particular in areas such as London with more transient populations that may be cut off from their family and local community.

Moth-hole repairs are one of The Seam’s most sought after services – with charges from £10 – and she was training additional technicians to keep up with demand.

“There is a changing mindset with a growing narrative about the circular economy, sustainability and responsible consumer behaviours,” she said. “Repair is a central element of the circular economy – you can’t keep renting out a dress unless you repair and wash it. You can’t sell items if they are not cared for and restored.”
