Telangana: Four cops suspended over custodial death due to torture in Medak

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Four police officers in Telangana’s Medak district were suspended on Sunday over the death of a man in police custody following alleged torture.

Circle inspector Madhu, sub-inspector Rajasekhar and constables Prashanth and Pavan Kumar of Medak town have been suspended, Medak Superintendent of Police Rohini Priyadarshini said.

Inspector General of Police Chandrasekhar Reddy ordered their suspension, a day after Director General of Police Anjani Kumar ordered an investigation by a senior officer into the incident.

The DGP had directed the IGP to give the investigation to a senior officer of Kamareddy district and supervise the investigation.

The police chief also announced that disciplinary action has been initiated against the inspector and sub-inspector.

Daily wage labourer, Mohammad Qadeer, 35, on Friday succumbed to the injuries he had sustained due to torture by police.

The man was picked up from his sister’s house in Hyderabad on January 29 on suspicion of being involved in a theft case. He was taken to Medak where police allegedly kept him in illegal custody for five days and tortured him.

Qadeer was let off on February 2. His family alleged that he was tortured by police using third-degree methods.

Due to the alleged torture, Qadeer could not stand on his feet, and his kidneys were also damaged. On February 9, he was admitted to a hospital in Medak.

As Qadeer’s condition kept deteriorating, he was referred to Gandhi Hospital in Hyderabad for better treatment. However, he succumbed to his injuries on February 17. He is survived by his wife and two children.

The body was handed over to the family members early Saturday morning after autopsy and it was later buried in Medak.

  • Haryana: Cops use water cannons on protesting employees; Hooda slams action

Haryana: Cops use water cannons on protesting employees; Hooda slams action

    [ad_1]

Chandigarh: The Haryana Police on Sunday used water cannons and teargas on thousands of protesting government employees demanding restoration of the Old Pension Scheme (OPS).

Coming out in support of employees, former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda condemned using force against the protesting employees in Panchkula. He said the employees were protesting for legitimate demands.

“Cane-charge and use of teargas on a peaceful protest is highly condemnable. In a democracy, the government runs through dialogue, but Haryana’s BJP-JJP alliance wants to run the government through sticks and bullets,” he said.

The Leader of Opposition said the Congress supports the demand of the employees and promised to strongly raise the issue in the forthcoming Budget session of the Vidhan Sabha.

“If the present government does not accept the demands of the employees, a decision will be taken to implement OPS in the very first cabinet meeting after the formation of the Congress government in the state. The old-pension scheme has already been implemented in Congress-ruled Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Himachal Pradesh. Employees in Haryana will also get benefits on the same lines.”

Talking to the media after the Congress Legislature Party meeting here, he said the MLAs discussed party strategy in the assembly in detail.

Congress MLAs have given more than two dozen calling attention and adjournment motions in the assembly session and dozens of other issues will also be raised during the Zero Hour.

He said the Congress would raise family identity card, cut in pension of senior citizens, cut in BPL card, illegal mining, NGT cases, unemployment, demand for OPS, privatization of education, etc.

When asked about the budget, Hooda said nothing can be expected from this government after seeing the record of the last eight years.

Ahead of the meeting, delegations of agitating employees for OPS, sportspersons, ration depot holders, private college employees, Sarva Karmachari Sangh and farmers met Hooda and handed over a memorandum regarding their demands.

Hooda asked the government to take cognizance of their demands.

Hyderabad: AIMIM demands murder case against Medak cops over man’s death

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) has demanded that policemen involved in the alleged torture of a youth leading to his death in Telangana’s Medak district be booked for murder.

A 35-year-old daily wage labourer, Mohammad Qadeer, on Friday succumbed to the injuries he had sustained due to torture by the police.

The man was picked up from his sister’s house in Hyderabad on January 29 on suspicion of being involved in a theft case and was brought to Medak.

In a statement while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Medak, he alleged that he was kept in custody for five days and beaten up by policemen though he kept telling them that he was innocent.

“The cops said the person involved looks like me,” he said.

The police let him off on February 2 when he was unable to move his hands. They (police) asked him to tell others that he was kept in custody for one night. They also asked him to sign a paper and as he was unable to even hold the pen, one of the policemen signed the paper.

Qadeer named the two constables and the Sub-Inspector (SI). He said while the SI only slapped him twice or thrice, the two constables beat him up all over the body.

Due to the alleged torture, Qadeer could not stand on his feet, and his kidneys were also damaged. His wife Siddeshwari, alleged that police used third-degree methods on him. On February 9, he was admitted to a hospital in Medak.

As Qadeer’s condition kept deteriorating, he was referred to Gandhi Hospital in Hyderabad for better treatment. However, he succumbed to his injuries on February 17 and is survived by his wife and two children.

The body was handed over to the family members early Saturday morning after autopsy and it was later taken to Medak for last rites.

Qadeer’s death triggered public outrage. Local Muslim community leaders urged Bharat Rastra Samiti (BRS) MLA M. Padma Devender Reddy to take action against the policemen involved.

Subsequently, the MLA spoke with the Medak Superintendent of Police (SP) Rohini Priyadarshini, demanding an investigation into the incident.

The SP transferred SI Rajshekar and the two constables, Pavan and Prashanth.

AIMIM MLA from Hyderabad, Kausar Mohiuddin visited Medak and attended the funeral on Saturday morning. He slammed the police for the restrictions imposed on the funeral and questioned if Qadeer was a “naxalite or terrorist”.

The MLA demanded that the three policemen involved in the case should be booked for murder. He said the FIR should be changed to include the names of the SI and the two constables.

Jamia Nagar violence: Delhi cops move HC after Sharjeel Imam, 10 others discharged

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The city police Tuesday moved the Delhi High Court challenging a trial court’s order discharging 11 people, including student activists Sharjeel Imam and Asif Iqbal Tanha, in the 2019 Jamia Nagar violence case.

The 11 people were discharged on February 4 by the trial court, which said they were made “scapegoats” by police and that dissent has to be encouraged, not stifled.

The trial court, however, ordered the framing of charges against one of the accused, Mohammad Ilyas.

According to sources, the petition is yet to be cleared for listing before the high court.

An FIR was lodged in connection with the violence that erupted after a clash between police and people protesting against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) in the Jamia Nagar area here in December 2019.

Imam was accused of instigating the riots by delivering a provocative speech at the Jamia Milia University on December 13, 2019. He will continue to remain in jail as he is an accused in the larger conspiracy case of the 2020 northeast Delhi riots.

The trial court had said there were admittedly scores of protesters at the site and some anti-social elements within the crowd could have created an environment of disruption and havoc.

“However, the moot question remains — whether the accused persons herein were even prima facie complicit in taking part in that mayhem? The answer is an unequivocal no,” it had added.

The Jamia Nagar police station had filed the charge sheet against Imam, Asif Iqbal Tanha, Safoora Zargar, Mohammad Qasim, Mahmood Anwar, Shahzar Raza Khan, Mohammad Abuzar, Mohammad Shoaib, Umair Ahmad, Bilal Nadeem, Chanda Yadav and Mohammad Ilyas.

The charge sheet was filed under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including 148 (rioting, armed with a deadly weapon), 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide), 435 (mischief by fire or explosive substance with intent to cause damage), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 341 (wrongful restraint) and 120B (criminal conspiracy).

The charge sheet also included provisions of the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act.

  • BBC documentary screening: Cops’ action against students wrong, says Chirag

BBC documentary screening: Cops’ action against students wrong, says Chirag

    [ad_1]

Patna: Former Lok Janshakti Party president Chirag Paswan on Saturday voiced disapproval of police action against students in Delhi over attempted screening of the BBC documentary on the communal riots that took place in Gujarat two decades ago.

Paswan, who now heads a splinter group of the party founded by his late father Ram Vilas Paswan, however, qualified his statement by adding that the Centre’s decision to proscribe the documentary should also be “respected”.

“I believe that the police action against Delhi University students was wrong. However, once a decision has been taken by the Centre, that should also be respected”, he told reporters.

The 38-year-old leader was asked about what he thought of the controversy surrounding the documentary on the communal conflagration of 2002 which had led his late father to resign from the Union cabinet in protest.

Paswan senior, however, realigned with the BJP, which ruled Gujarat as well as the Centre when the riots took place.

The late leader also remained a member, till death, of the Union cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi who was the Chief Minister of Gujarat in 2002.

Chirag Paswan, who represents Jamui Lok Sabha seat in Bihar, was also asked about turmoil in the ruling ‘Mahagathbandhan’ in the state.

“My view is that coalitions formed solely with electoral arithmetic in mind always tend to be shaky. Alliances must always be based on principles”, said Paswan, who is accused by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s JD(U) of having been part of a “BJP conspiracy” in the 2020 assembly polls.

Training his guns at Kumar, the young leader said the longest serving CM of Bihar had “no vision” for the development of the state and challenged the veteran leader for an open debate.

Paswan also claimed that people of the state were paying more for electricity than residents of other parts of the country since power was purchased by the government at “inexplicably higher rates, thanks to a powerful nexus the CM also cannot break”.

Notably, the CM has been pressing for a “one nation one tariff” policy, claiming that under the current system impoverished Bihar was being compelled to cough up more than other states to get its quota of electricity.

Paswa also slammed Kumar for failure to attract investors and asked the Bihar CM to take a leaf out of the book of PM Modi who used to hold “investor summits” in Gujarat when he ruled the state.
