First two retail stores in India milestone for Apple: CEO Tim Cook

    [ad_1]

New York: India is at a “tipping point” and a major focus for Apple, the technology giant’s CEO Tim Cook has said, terming the opening of its first two retail stores in the country – in Mumbai and Delhi – as a “milestone” for the company.

Speaking at Apple’s Q2 2023 earnings call on Thursday, Cook emphasised the dynamism and vibrancy in the Indian market, calling it “unbelievable”.

“Looking at the business in India, we did set a quarterly record, grew very strong, double digits year-over-year. So it was quite a good quarter for us. Taking a step back, India is an incredibly exciting market. It’s a major focus for us,” Cook said.

    MS Education Academy

Referring to his recent visit to India, Cook said in the earnings call, “I was just there, and the dynamism in the market, the vibrancy is unbelievable.” Cook was in India in April, his first trip to the country in seven years, to open Apple’s first official retail store in the country, in Mumbai, followed by the launch of a second store in New Delhi. Cook said the stores are “off to a great start.” Terming the opening of Apple’s first two stores in Mumbai and Delhi as a “milestone” for the company, the Apple CEO said, “…in a milestone for Apple, we just opened our first two Apple stores in India, in Mumbai and Delhi. I was there to see it for myself, and I couldn’t have been more delighted by the excitement and enthusiasm of the customers, developers, creators and team members I got to spend time with.” “I’ve had the chance to connect with customers and teams all around the world in recent months, so many people shared with me that they were fans of Apple, not just because of the innovations we create, but because of the values that guide us, and that means a great deal to us,” he said.

He said that Apple has been expanding its operations in India to serve more customers.

“We’ve got a number of channel partners in the country as well that we’re partnering with, and we’re very happy with how that’s going overall. Overall, I couldn’t be more delighted and excited by the enthusiasm I’m seeing for the brand there,” Cook said.

He added that many people are “coming into the middle class, and I really feel that India is at a tipping point, and it’s great to be there.” On Apple’s performance in other emerging markets, Cook said the company had a stellar quarter in emerging markets overall, with records set in several places, including Indonesia and Mexico, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, UAE, and quarterly records set in Brazil, India and Malaysia.

“It was a great quarter for emerging markets in general, despite the headwinds of the currency…and so we’re putting efforts in a number of these markets and really see, particularly given our low share and the dynamics of the demographics, et cetera, a great opportunity for us in those markets,” he said.

Apple reported revenue of USD 94.8 billion for the March quarter and set an “all-time record” for services and a March quarter record for iPhone.

Responding to a question comparing the market in India today and that in China a decade ago, Cook said each country is different and has its journey, “so I hesitate to compare too much. But what I do see in India is a lot of people entering the middle class, and I’m hopeful that we can convince some number of them to buy an iPhone, and we’ll see how that works out. But right now, it’s working out well.” In response to another question on which segment he sees the biggest opportunity for Apple in India, he said there is an opportunity across the board, including in services.

“Obviously, the ARPUs (average revenue per user) are lower in India for whether you’re talking about TV and movie streaming or music, the ARPUs are much lower than other regions. But if you look at it over a long arc of time, I think there’s a good opportunity across the board,” he said.

Cook also met Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his recent visit.

“An absolute delight to meet you, @tim_cook! Glad to exchange views on diverse topics and highlight the tech-powered transformations taking place in India,” the prime minister tweeted after meeting Apple CEO.

Cook also took to Twitter and said, “Thank you, Prime Minister @narendramodi for the warm welcome. We share your vision of the positive impact technology can make on India’s future — from education and developers to manufacturing and the environment, we’re committed to growing and investing across the country.” Cook had last visited India in 2016 when the tech giant began scaling up operations in the country.

The company has set up a two-storey Apple store in Mumbai, covering an area of around 20,000 square feet. The Apple Saket Store in Delhi is half the size of the Mumbai store. The barricade for the Apple Saket store features a unique design that takes inspiration from the capital’s many gates.

The company has more than 70 highly skilled retail team members at Apple Saket Store who come from a combined 18 states in India and collectively speak more than 15 languages.

Over time, he said, Apple has been expanding operations in India to serve more customers.

“Three years ago, we launched the Apple Store online, and then, we launched two stores just a few weeks ago, and they’re off to a great start, one in Mumbai and one in Delhi,” said Cook.

Apple has got a number of channel partners in the country as well.

“Overall, I couldn’t be more delighted and excited by the enthusiasm I’m seeing for the brand there. There are a lot of people coming into the middle class, and I really feel that India is at a tipping point, and it’s great to be there,” said the Apple CEO.

  • I wish more Indian kids, including girls, learn coding early: Tim Cook

I wish more Indian kids, including girls, learn coding early: Tim Cook

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Coding is the only global language and I wish that more Indian students, including girls, learn coding early in school days so that they can create world-class products and solve real-life problems as they grow up, Apple CEO Tim Cook has stressed.

In an interaction with IANS during his India visit last week, Cook said that coding is one thing schools worldwide including in India should embrace early in children’s lives.

“Coding is the only global language. It is a way to express yourself and arguably, we need more of that in the world and bring the world closer,” said Cook, who has always emphasised that coding should be taught as early as elementary school.

    MS Education Academy

Cook told IANS that everyone should learn programming before they graduate from high school.

“It is the most important language you can learn. A programming language is a way to tap into your creativity and unleash it to the world,” he added.

The Apple CEO has always emphasised on including coding in school curriculum, saying a four-year degree is not necessary to be proficient at coding.

Apart from empowering developers via its Bengaluru-based App Accelerator, Apple has taken another significant leap: nurturing young talent in coding across schools and colleges in the country via powerful apps.

For young coders, Apple offers Swift which is a powerful open language that lets everyone build amazing apps.

Last year, Patiala-born Jaskaran Singh and Pune-based Jay Firke were among more than 350 students from 40 countries and regions who were selected as Apple’s ‘2022 Swift Student Challenge’ winner for showcasing extraordinary coding skills.

Singh developed a productivity app called ‘Nudges: Minimal To-Do’, which is available on the App Store.

Firke, 21, is a self-taught developer and learnt coding using online resources. Having studied at MacroVision Academy in Burhanpur, Madhya Pradesh, he is focused on working in the AI and AR space and his submission with ‘PushARBall’ was completely AI driven.

The ‘Swift Student Challenge’ is part of Apple’s Worldwide Developers’ Conference (WWDC).

Moreover, Xcode is an integrated development environment (IDE) for macOS containing a suite of software development tools.

In Cook’s words, every kid should learn to code as coding is the most important second language they can learn.

“Coding is one of the most valuable skills a person can learn. It can open new doors, jumpstart careers, and help big dreams seem like achievable goals. Everyone around the world should have an opportunity to learn how to code,” according to the Apple CEO.

Committed to growing, investing across the country: Cook tells PM Modi

New Delhi: Apple CEO Tim Cook on Wednesday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and stressed that the company is committed to growing and investing across the country.

Cook, who is in India to launch the company’s flagship retail stores in Mumbai and Delhi, thanked PM Modi for the warm welcome.

“Thank you Prime Minister @narendramodi for the warm welcome. We share your vision of the positive impact technology can make on India’s future – from education and developers to manufacturing and the environment”, Cook said in a tweet, posting a picture with PM Modi.

“We are committed to growing and investing across the country,” Cook added.

Apple is ramping up its manufacturing in India, along with growing its retail presence.

Apple began manufacturing iPhone in India in 2017, and since then, the company has worked with suppliers to assemble new iPhone models and produce a growing number of components.

Amid the local manufacturing push and an upcoming widespread retail store strategy, Apple shipped $7.5 billion worth iPhones and iPads in India in FY22-23, according to CMR data accessed by IANS.

In FY23, Apple shipped more than 7 million iPhones and half a million iPads in the country, registering a 28 per cent growth for iPhone shipments, according to initial estimates provided by market intelligence firm CMR.

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: For Apple CEO Tim Cook, seeing a 1984 Macintosh Classic machine as he launched India’s first Apple store in Mumbai was a cute surprise.

He could not stop his amusement after Sajid Moinuddin, a designer by profession and a Goregaon resident, came with an old Macintosh computer to see him at the inauguration of Apple BKC here.

Cook was elated to see the old Apple machine at the event and signed an autograph on it.

    MS Education Academy

The Apple CEO, in India after a gap of seven years, also signed an unopened iPod for another Apple fan at the retail store.

“The energy, creativity, and passion in Mumbai is incredible! We are so excited to open Apple BKC,” Cook tweeted after opening the store amid the beats of Nashik dhols, greeting the first customers with handshakes and selfies.

The new Apple flagship retail stores in Mumbai, followed by one in New Delhi and backed by aggressive sales initiatives, will fuel Apple’s growth in the year ahead.

Apple BKC is designed to be one of the most energy-efficient Apple Store locations in the world, with a dedicated solar array and zero reliance on fossil fuels for store operations.

  • Tim Cook likely to welcome customers at Apple’s first store in Mumbai

Tim Cook likely to welcome customers at Apple’s first store in Mumbai

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Apple’s chief executive Tim Cook is likely to welcome customers to the iPhone maker’s first store in India, which is scheduled to open at the BKC business district on Tuesday, company executives said on Monday.

The store is being launched as the company marks 25 years in the country.

Store openings for the iconic brand world over have witnessed fans queuing up to become the first customer, and it is to be seen how the people of Mumbai welcome the store on a working day.

    MS Education Academy

On the eve of opening for customers, a media preview was held at the store which is spread over a 20,000 square feet area. The Mumbai store opening will be followed by the launch of a similar facility in New Delhi’s Saket on April 20. According to reports, Mr Cook will also meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“India has such a beautiful culture and an incredible energy, and we’re excited to build on our long-standing history — supporting our customers, investing in local communities, and working together to build a better future with innovations that serve humanity,” Mr Cook said in a statement.

The company’s senior vice president for retail Deirdre O’Brien told reporters that a lot of attention has been given to Apple’s key beliefs of sustainability and inclusivity, and pointed out that the 100-strong team which will be on the floor will be speaking 18 Indian languages.

The company employs 2,500 people in the country and has indirectly helped create 10 lakh jobs through its app ecosystem, she said.

The two-storey store occupies prime real estate at the corner of a sprawling mall which also houses brands like Diesel, Michael Kors, Kate Spade and Swarovski.

While a lot of features at the store are the same as other Apple stores across the world, the company seems to have paid attention to ‘Indianise’ the facility by including local influences, starting with the much talked about ‘kaali-peeli‘ theme on the facade borrowed from the black and yellow taxis on the city roads.

O’Brien said the store has an 8-metre tall ceiling if one were to include the upper floor, and has a specially made staircase leading to the upper floor that has 14-metre long, single-piece glass walls on either side.

For the walls inside the store, the company has specially procured stone from Rajasthan, and 4.5 lakh pieces of timber adorn the ceiling walls, she said.

The store has products, merchandise and services like repairing the gadgets available for customers, executives said, adding that the customers will be able to check out the products and can also educate themselves on how to use them optimally.

Like in any other store, there are long wooden desks on which the products have been kept, which also include specially built sensors that trigger the opening of switches.

Apple’s maiden retail store in the country has been a subject of great speculation since at least 2019 when Indian policymakers warmed up to the idea of welcoming foreign direct investment in single-brand retail. The permissions to allow such stores have come with riders like mandates on local sourcing in the final finished goods.

Earlier, the Cupertino, US-based tech major was reportedly looking at a space in central Mumbai before narrowing down on the current location owned by a company led by the richest Indian Mukesh Ambani, which has also been a distributor of Apple’s products for some time.

The company has leased out the space in Jio World Drive mall for 11 years and has been successful in negotiating for barring 22 competing brands, including Amazon, Facebook, Google LG, Microsoft, Sony and others, from occupying space or advertising in close vicinity.

The launch of the store in the financial capital on Tuesday will be followed by the opening of a similar store in New Delhi’s Saket two days later. As per reports, the company will be paying ₹ 42 lahks per month as a rental for the store, and will also share a part of the revenues with the space owner.

The store is inspired by the iconic kaali-peeli taxis which have been a regular feature on the city roads and will count on luxe brands like Michael Kors, Kate Spade and Swarovski as its neighbours.

At present, Apple has a 3 per cent share in the highly competitive Indian smartphone market which is ruled by Chinese and South Korean brands. Lately, the company has upped its reliance on manufacturing in India, which is increasingly being seen as an alternative for China ever since the supply chain disruptions during the Covid pandemic.

Last week, the company revealed its facade with the “Hello Mumbai” greeting.

Bullish on India, Tim Cook to unveil Apple retail stores in Mumbai, Delhi

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: As Apple firms up its plans to put India on its global manufacturing and retail map, the company’s CEO Tim Cook will be in India next week to inaugurate Apple’s brick-and-mortar stores in Mumbai and Delhi.

Reliable sources told IANS that Cook will inaugurate Apple’s own branded retail stores — at Jio World Drive Mall in Mumbai and at Select CityWalk mall in Saket, Delhi — that will be the first for the tech giant which has doubled down on its India growth plans.

Apple set another all-time revenue record for the India market in the quarter that ended December 31, 2022.

    MS Education Academy

In the analysts’ call after posting its quarterly results, Cook said, “India is a hugely exciting market for us and a major focus.

“We brought the online store there in 2020. We will soon bring Apple Retail there,” Cook had announced.

“I’m very bullish on India,” he added.

According to the India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA), Apple’s ‘Make in India’ smartphone now constitutes 50 per cent of total exports.

Reports surfaced earlier this year that Cook-led Apple will quickly shift some of its China manufacturing to India and Vietnam in the next 2-3 years.

India is likely to produce 45-50 per cent of Apple’s iPhones by 2027, at par with China, where 80-85 per cent of iPhones were produced in 2022, according to estimates.

India accounted for 10-15 per cent of iPhones’ overall production capacity at the end of 2022.

Apple became the first smartphone player in India to have exported $1 billion worth iPhones in the month of December.

It currently manufactures iPhones 12, 13, 14 and 14 Plus in the country.

As Apple gears up to throw open the gates of its first branded retail store in India this month, its physical stores have left an indelible impression on millions worldwide.

For millions of Indians, visiting an Apple Store in the country will be a delightful experience. Those who have a constant yearning to be ‘delighted’ at Apple Stores at world-famous tourist spots, India will soon be on the Apple’s retail global map.
