World is recognising capabilities and contributions of ‘New India’, EAM Jaishankar

Bogota: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has said that the world is recognising the capabilities and contributions of a ‘New India’ as he underscored that there is a feeling that today’s India has the ability to bridge the difficult issues.
During an interaction with the Indian community members in Bogota on Tuesday, Jaishankar also said that the world today is acknowledging the changes in India and getting more ready for India.
Jaishankar also shared with the community members India’s transformation into ‘New India’ and its global implications. “Underlined how the world is recognising the capabilities and contributions of a New India,” he said.

Citing the Ukraine conflict or problems which deal with the developed world and the developing world, he told the Indian diaspora that “in all of this from all quarters, there is today that feeling that India is a country which in some way or the other can serve as a bridge as a someone who brings differing opinions together (and) helps to find a solution”.
“In the last decade, we have built up a reputation as what we call a first responder. When something happens we are quick to move because we’ve developed our own capability within the country. And now we feel we are good enough, experienced enough and responsible enough to do that outside…” he said, citing the example of the recent earthquake in Turkey where India sent its disaster rescue team within 24 hours.
Noting that there are some issues which trouble all countries in the world, the minister said that climate is one and here too there’s been a big change in India’s positioning, in India’s image.
“We are seeing today as a climate leader, a country which has done a lot on solar energy, on renewables, which is actually coming up with a whole series of ideas and practices and institutions,” he said.
He added that today a much more united global position on terrorism is at least partly due to the efforts that India has made in the last 10 years. “There is a feeling that today’s India has the ability to bridge the difficult issues. And frankly, sometimes the difficult arguments of the day,” he added.

He said that there is a much greater inclination on the part of the world to make an effort to understand India, that an India which is stronger, more powerful, more impactful. “There is a much greater willingness on the part of the world to make an effort to understand us and what we are,” he said.
Jaishankar also talked about the work done by Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government for the welfare of Indians abroad.
He lauded the Indian diaspora’s contributions, saying the image of India in foreign countries is significantly shaped by the community. “In this era of globalisation, of technology, of mobility, Indians are making their presence felt everywhere,” he added.
While responding to a question on dual citizenship, Jaishankar said that the issue involves security implications and not many big countries allow it.
During his stay in Colombia, Jaishankar would meet several top leaders of the country and review bilateral ties with his Colombian counterpart Alvaro Leyva Duran.
Jaishankar is on a nine-day trip to Guyana, Panama, Colombia, and the Dominican Republic, his first visit as the external affairs minister to these Latin American countries and the Caribbean.

NGOs based in four states received major chunks of foreign contributions: govt

New Delhi: NGOs based in Delhi received the highest amount of foreign funds, followed by those based in Karnataka, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu out of the over Rs 55,600 crore contribution sent to India from abroad in the last three years, Rajya Sabha was informed on Wednesday.
Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai said as per the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act 2010, every Non-governmental organisation which receives foreign contributions has to submit an annual return along with the income and expenditure statement, receipt and payment account and balance sheet for every financial year.
Rai said during 2019-20, 2020-21 and 2021-22, a total of Rs 55,645.08 crore was received by Indian NGOs as foreign contributions.
Among these, Delhi has received Rs 14,062.77 crore in the said three financial years, Karnataka received Rs 7,241.32 crore, Maharashtra received Rs 5,606.01 crore and Tamil Nadu received Rs 6,804.07 crore, he said in response to a written question.
All NGOs in the country received Rs 16,359.48 crore in 2019-20, Rs 17,166.34 crore in 2020-21 and Rs 22,119.26 crore in 2021-22.
The minister said between 2020 and 2022 and the current year, the FCRA registration certificate of 1,828 NGOs has been cancelled for violation of the provisions of the act.
As on March 10, 2023, there were 16,383 FCRA-registered organisations in the country, officials said.

New indictment details Bankman-Fried’s illegal campaign contributions

Bankman-Fried, along with fellow FTX exchange executives Ryan Salame and Nishad Singh, were among the most prolific political donors during the 2022 cycle. Salame and Singh have reportedly cooperated with regulators.
Amid the scrutiny of FTX since its bankruptcy and Bankman-Fried’s arrest in December, some congressional campaigns and super PACs have already set aside funds equal to the FTX team’s contributions until they receive further instruction.
FTX’s new management, which is overseeing the platform’s bankruptcy restructuring, formally requested political contractors and organizations return the funds earlier this year.
Bankman-Fried is now charged with 12 criminal counts, including securities fraud, conspiracy to commit bank fraud and conspiracy to operate an unlicensed money transmitter. Prosecutors initially charged Bankman-Fried in December on eight criminal counts. He pleaded not guilty.
A spokesperson for Bankman-Fried did not immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday.
Thursday’s indictment identifies a contribution of $107,000 to the New York State Democratic Party made shortly before the midterm elections as an example of how Bankman-Fried sought to hide the extent of his political activities. The funds, which were wired from Bankman-Fried’s bank account, were tagged as having come from an unnamed co-conspirator instead.
“As soon as I saw that, I asked that the funds be segregated,” New York State Democratic Chair Jay Jacobs said in an interview on Thursday afternoon. “We’re awaiting direction [from federal authorities] on who we return that money to.”
The new indictment provides fresh details on the efforts that Bankman-Fried allegedly undertook to evade scrutiny by regulators and investors as he built up FTX as one of the largest crypto firms in the world.

Prosecutors said Bankman-Fried required those who worked with him to use “encrypted and ephemeral messaging platforms” to prevent regulators and law enforcement from obtaining records of his actions. He directed Alameda Research CEO Caroline Ellison, who is cooperating with prosecutors, to change certain Alameda entities’ names to make venture capital investments appear as if they came from FTX, according to the indictment.
In 2020, Bankman-Fried also set up another entity called North Dimension to become a front with an unidentified California bank, prosecutors said Thursday. The account was set up under North Dimension so that it could house FTX customer deposits without Bankman-Fried’s other businesses facing scrutiny from the bank, according to the indictment. The customer funds housed in the North Dimension account, as well as others, were then allegedly used by Alameda to finance its operations, make investments and fund campaign contributions, prosecutors said.

U.S. prosecutors on Thursday revealed new details of how FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried allegedly made millions of dollars of illegal campaign contributions using stolen customer money, as they hit the one-time crypto exchange executive with new fraud charges.
Federal prosecutors in New York alleged that Bankman-Fried and two unnamed co-conspirators took out loans from Alameda Research — his hedge fund — and siphoned FTX customer funds to pump money into campaigns and super PACs that supported candidates from both parties in the 2022 midterms. The charges indicate the misuse of funds for political activity contributed to the collapse of the FTX exchange last year.
Bankman-Fried improperly funneled contributions through other individuals to support dozens of Republicans as well as left-of-center Democrats whom he didn’t want associated with his personal brand, according to the indictment. Bankman-Fried and his partners used an encrypted Signal messaging channel to coordinate their efforts, which ultimately resulted in more than 300 unlawful contributions.

Utah Legislature passes resolution honouring Sikh community’s contributions

Houston: The Legislature in the US state of Utah has unanimously passed a resolution honoring the Sikh community for their contributions and service to humanity despite facing “oppression and discrimination throughout the world”.
The resolution was introduced by Representative Angela Romero and Senator Luz Escamilla and passed last week, Kutv reported.
“The Senate unanimously passed H.J.R (House Joint Resolution) 4, a resolution highlighting the history and significant contributions of the Sikh community. We were joined by members of Utah’s Sikh community as well as those from India and other parts of the world,” a tweet from the Utah Senate read.
The resolution appreciated the Sikh community for their humanitarian services despite facing “oppression and discrimination throughout the world”.
“The state of Utah seeks to further the diversity of its community and afford all residents the opportunity to better understand, recognize, and appreciate the rich history and shared experiences of Sikhs to enforce laws for access to equal opportunity of humans, irrespective of their caste, creed, color, or appearance,” the resolution read.
The senators gave the Sikh members in attendance a standing ovation before passing the resolution.

By conferring Padma Vibhushan on Mulayam, govt has made mockery of his contributions: SP leader

Lucknow: By conferring the Padma Vibhushan on Mulayam Singh Yadav, the government has made a mockery of his stature and contributions to the country, Samajwadi Party leader Swami Prasad Maurya said on Thursday.
He and other party leaders demanded that the Samajwadi Party founder be conferred the Bharat Ratna, the country’s highest civilian award.
Yadav was conferred the Padma Vibhushan, the country’s second highest civilian honour, posthumously on Wednesday.
Reacting to the award, SP MLA Maurya tweeted in Hindi, “By giving Padma Vibhushan posthumously to Netaji Shri Mulayam Singh Yadav, the Government of India has made a mockery of Netaji’s stature, work and contributions to the nation. If Netaji had to be respected then he should have been honoured with Bharat Ratna.”
Similar views were expressed by party spokesperson I P Singh.
“Except the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian honour, no other honour befits the son of the soil, Late Mulayam Singh Yadav. An announcement should be made to give Bharat Ratna to our respected Netaji without any delay,” Singh tweeted.
Yadav, the Samajwadi Party founder and three-time Uttar Pradesh chief minister, died on October 10 last year.
