Highway Remains Closed As Shooting Stones Continue In Banihal

Srinagar, Feb 22: The strategic Jammu-Srinagar highway continues to be shut as shooting stones continued to hamper road clearance work at Shalgadi Banihal in Ramban district on Wednesday, officials said.

“Highway is still closed. Restoration work is underway. People are advised not to travel on highway till the restoration work is completed,” a traffic department official here told GNS. However, he said that the shooting stones continue to hamper the road clearance work.

The highway, the only surface link connecting Kashmir Valley with the outside world, was closed on Tuesday due amid heavy landslides in the area and the situation was described “dire” by the officials. (GNS)

After a three-day investigation that entailed searching through files and copying data from certain digital devices, the income tax inspectors departed the BBC offices in New Delhi and Mumbai on Thursday night.

The UK national broadcaster confirmed the news on Twitter and stated that they will keep working with the authorities.

“The income tax authorities have left our offices in Delhi and Mumbai. We will continue to cooperate with the authorities and hope matters are resolved as soon as possible.

We are supporting staff – some of whom have faced lengthy questioning or been required to stay overnight – and their welfare is our priority. Our output is back to normal and we remain committed to serving our audiences in India and beyond.

Cyclone Gabrielle: temporary morgues set up in New Zealand as rescues continue

    [ad_1]

Authorities in New Zealand have set up two temporary morgues, as the death toll from Cyclone Gabrielle, the country’s most damaging storm in decades, climbs to seven.

A second volunteer firefighter, Craig Stevens, died in hospital after being caught in a landslide near Auckland earlier in the week. A body was also found near Napier on Friday morning. Officials have warned that the toll is likely to rise further.

Severe storms have cut off entire towns, washed away farms, bridges and livestock, and inundated homes, stranding people on rooftops. Ten thousand people have been displaced and by Thursday afternoon, 3,455 people had been registered by police as “uncontactable”, though some were likely to be multiple reports for the same person, authorities said.

Temporary morgues have been set up in Napier and Hastings as part of “standard practice”, a police spokesperson told news outlet Stuff.

“The facilities have been established as a precaution to ensure that any fatalities can be managed with care and respect, and in accordance with coronial processes. They are held there before being taken to a mortuary,” police said.

Communication and access to a number of areas remained difficult, while surveillance flights were being undertaken to survey the damage and identify those who may be isolated. Convoys of trucks carrying essential items such as food, water, medicine and fuel were making their way into remote areas and the defence force is using ships to transport needed items into areas of the east coast.

On Thursday, prime minister, Chris Hipkins, warned that there were some people for whom the police held “grave concerns”, but added, “We believe the majority of those considered uncontactable simply cannot make contact with loved ones, so police are prioritising those who are in isolated areas.”

Urban search and rescue team leader Ken Cooper said one man had walked 70km from Putorino to Napier to give rescue workers help with their missions.

“That’s a day-and-a-half walk,” he told Radio NZ. “He walked to give us a list of people still trapped up in the east coast.”

In Hawke’s Bay helicopters and boats were being used to check on people in isolated communities, while search and rescue teams continued to operate.

Rescue efforts were likely to be boosted by news from MetService that it no longer had any weather warnings in place in New Zealand and sunshine was forecast for most of the North Island.

  • UK government ‘closely monitoring’ as BBC tax ‘enquiries’ continue in India

UK government ‘closely monitoring’ as BBC tax ‘enquiries’ continue in India

    [ad_1]

London: The UK government is “closely monitoring” the situation as the BBC said some of its staff have been asked to remain at their Delhi and Mumbai offices to cooperate with the “ongoing enquiries” of the Income Tax (I-T) authorities on Tuesday.

In New Delhi and Mumbai, officials said the surveys were being carried out to investigate issues related to international taxation and transfer pricing of BBC subsidiary companies, and alleged that the broadcaster was served with notices in the past, but was “defiant and non-compliant” and had significantly diverted its profits.

While there has been no official statement related to the action, British government sources said they are “closely monitoring reports of tax surveys conducted at the offices of the BBC in India”.

The action comes weeks after the UK-headquartered public broadcaster aired a controversial two-part documentary in the UK, India: The Modi Question’, referencing Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the 2002 Gujarat riots.

“The Income Tax Authorities remain at the BBC offices in New Delhi and Mumbai. Many staff have now left the building, but some have been asked to remain and are continuing to cooperate with the ongoing enquiries,” a BBC spokesperson said in a statement.

“We are supporting our staff during this time and continue to hope to have this situation resolved as soon as possible. Our output and journalism continues as normal and we are committed to serving our audiences in India,” the spokesperson said.

There was shock as the news of the action unfolded in the UK early on Tuesday morning and a broad consensus has been that the action was linked to the controversial BBC documentary on Prime Minister Modi aired in the UK last month.

“Everyone’s shocked and no one is fooled that today’s tax survey, as it’s being called, is a retaliation to the recent BBC documentary India: The Modi Question’,” said Dr Mukulika Banerjee, a leading author and academic at the London School of Economics (LSE).

“The BBC is an independent public broadcaster so if it puts out a documentary, it is not acting at the behest of the British government. In fact, BBC journalists routinely grill the British PM and all elected officials holding them accountable for their actions. The word independent’ means just that,” she said.

“The Indian government has appointed India as the Mother of Democracy’ during its year of the G20 Presidency and plastered posters across every inch of the country proclaiming that. It should know then that one of the basic principles of being a democracy is to recognise that press freedom is an essential central pillar of a functioning democracy. They really need to understand that this is what press freedom looks like. And stop its shameful harassment of the BBC in Delhi and Mumbai,” she added.

The South Asia Solidarity Group, a human rights organisation based in the UK, dubbed it a “blatantly vindictive move”.

“In the wake of the government’s ban on sharing extracts or screening the documentary, this raid makes it clear that the Modi government will attack all those who criticise Narendra Modi, the BJP and those close to them,” said Mukti Shah, spokesperson for the group.

Meanwhile, there were others such as the Global Hindu Federation which expressed support for the action.

“As a ‘coloniser collaborator’ the BBC has been living rent free in our heads, and no doubt financial irregularities abound in their ongoing occupation of the India media space,” said the federation’s chair Satish Sharma.

Last month, the Indian government had branded the two-part series on Prime Minister Modi a “propaganda piece”, designed to push a particular “discredited narrative”.

“The bias, lack of objectivity and continuing colonial mindset is blatantly visible,” the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said at the time it was aired in the UK last month.

The documentary also triggered coordinated Indian diaspora protests at BBC offices across different UK cities at the end of last month.

The UK government responded in the House of Commons to the protests by insisting the BBC as a media organisation was “independent in its outlet” and reiterating its commitment to enhance ties with India.

“We recognise how this portrayal of the Indian government has played out in India. I made it clear that the BBC is independent in its output, that the UK regards India as an incredibly important international partner and that we will be investing heavily in that relationship in the coming decades,” UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly said earlier this month.

His remarks were later echoed by British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s official spokesperson in Downing Street: “The BBC is independent in its output and we would stress that we continue to regard India as an incredibly important international partner.

“We will be investing heavily in our relationship with India over the coming decades and we’re confident it will only go from strength to strength.”

Income tax survey at BBC office to continue till Wednesday

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The ‘survey’ being conducted by the Income Tax (I-T) Department at BBC’s Delhi and Mumbai offices since Tuesday morning are expected to continue through the night till Wednesday morning, sources aware of the developments said.

No official reaction on the development has come from the I-T department or the Finance Ministry till the filing of this report.

I-T officials are said to have seized phones and laptops from the staffers in the broadcaster’s offices, according to reports.

The ‘survey’ came weeks after a two-part documentary by the BBC on the 2002 Gujarat riots had created furore across the country.

As per reports, the I-T department officials are learnt to be probing tax details of the UK’s national broadcaster pertaining to the past few years.

“The income tax authorities are currently at the BBC offices in New Delhi and Mumbai and we are fully cooperating. We hope to have this situation resolved as soon as possible,” the BBC had tweeted on Tuesday afternoon.

Employees were allowed to leave six hours after the searches began, only after their laptops had been scanned, reports quoting sources said.

  • AIADMK’s alliance with BJP to continue for 2024 polls: Palaniswami

AIADMK’s alliance with BJP to continue for 2024 polls: Palaniswami

    [ad_1]

Chennai: AIADMK’s interim general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami said on Friday that AIADMK’s alliance with BJP will continue for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Claiming the AIADMK’s relationship with the BJP had been cordial, he said that the parties would fight the 2024 polls together.

Talking to reporters in Tirunelveli after campaigning for his party’s candidate in the Erode East Assembly by-poll, he played down the controversies about AIADMK and BJP leaders attacking each other on social media.

The AIADMK leader said that each leader would want their party to grow, unlike in the ruling Secular Progressive Alliance, where the partners focused more on the DMK’s growth.

The former chief minister also remarked that it was the AIADMK that had helped so many other parties and not the other way around.

The by-poll in Erode East is scheduled on February 27.

Palaniswami said that he would campaign for the candidate again on February 24 and 25.

Exuding confidence that AIADMK will win the by-election, he said the victory will resound in Lok Sabha polls as well.

He alleged that the DMK government had done nothing for the people of Erode East. He said that Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s government had not even ensured proper drinking water for the constituency’s residents in its 21-month tenure.

He claimed that when AIADMK was in power, it had taken up an exclusive integrated drinking water project at a cost of Rs 484 crore for Erode, from the Cauvery river.

After the trial runs, when the scheme was to be commissioned, the general elections were announced in May 2021.

The AIADMK leader said wherever DMK leaders were campaigning, the people were questioning them.

He alleged that the law and order had deteriorated in the state due to the inefficiency of the DMK government.

“The drug menace is rife across the state; we see the lives of youngsters and students getting spoiled in front of our eyes,” he added.

He slammed the chief minister for not fulfilling poll promises but instead building a memorial and a library in the name of his father.

He pointed out that many environmentalists, activists and fishermen have opposed the government’s decision to construct a pen statue in the sea.

“We are not against the pen statue but we are asking the government to construct it near the memorial and not in the sea,” he said, adding that the government need not spend Rs 81 crore on that. The government can construct it with Rs 2 crore and use the remaining money to distribute free pens to students, he said.
