After throwing cold water on Arrington’s plans to move a budget, McCarthy reached out with a peace offering and consolation prize, making him chief sponsor of the 320-page fiscal measure House Republicans will push to pass this week. When the speaker called about that gesture, Arrington said in a recent interview, he did not address the private drama that escalated over the past several weeks as McCarthy spurned Arrington’s eagerness to vote on a budget and relied increasingly on his own posse of advisers.

That leaves Arrington in a touchy spot. He’s still publicly committed to drafting a budget that could lay out the GOP’s fiscal aspirations for the next decade — even as McCarthy forges ahead with his own separate plan. The chair is still meeting with his committee about advancing his budget.

“These budget resolutions are not easy,” Arrington acknowledged in an interview. “They’re complicated by the fact that you have a diverse group of members, it touches virtually every policy in every program in the federal government, and we are so deep in the debt hole.”

While Arrington wouldn’t commit to a future markup of a House GOP budget, he stressed that “we are making very good headway.” But even if he can finish writing one, a budget would promptly saddle Republicans with political liabilities galore: Including internal fights over taxes, entitlements and the desire among some conservatives to pare back Pentagon spending.

Knowing those drawbacks, President Joe Biden has spent months calling on House Republicans to release a budget as a marker in the debt talks. McCarthy has sidestepped that gambit by rallying his members instead around the package of spending cuts, deregulatory moves and a short-term debt hike that is slated for a floor vote this week.

All of that makes Arrington’s entire effort now appear fruitless, with GOP appropriators preparing to write annual spending bills based on the funding totals outlined in the McCarthy-driven package.

Still, a number of Republicans say they want to adopt a budget, even if it amounts to more of a pure party messaging exercise than in years past. Arrington said friends in the conference have flooded him with calls and texts of support amid rumors of conflict with McCarthy.

The 51-year-old chair is hardly the first budget chair who’s seen tension with House leaders. The role is often seen as undesirable, rendered feckless by an eroded federal budget process but still serving as a mouthpiece for the majority party’s fiscal goals.

Four years ago, then-Rep. John Yarmuth (D-Ky.) faced a similar quandary as Democratic Budget Committee chair. Leaders of Yarmuth’s party in 2019 wanted to lay down an opening bid as they faced off with the Trump administration over the debt limit and budget caps. After weeks of painstaking work and a nail biter of a committee vote, Democrats were forced to yank the budget from the floor amid a revolt from progressives and moderates.

“That’s the position I found myself in,” Yarmuth said in a phone interview. Arrington, he observed, is “just going to have to sit there and take the abuse.”

Yarmuth said he recommended Arrington for the Budget gavel before retiring last year “because he’s basically a reasonable person and someone I never had a problem talking to or working with.” Lately, the Kentucky Democrat sees Arrington’s predicament as even tougher than his own previous dilemma.

“He has a double-edged problem,” Yarmuth said. “One is that leadership is trying to herd more cats than we ever had to herd, and he’s got mandates to [enact] things that would be highly unpopular and can never get done.”

Arrington didn’t dispute that passing a budget would force his colleagues to make painful, potentially unpopular choices to back up their goal of massively paring back federal spending.

“These are not easy decisions. So most people, they avoid them,” the 51-year-old said in last week’s interview.

He sent confusing signals earlier this year — first promising to release a budget in April and then May, only to later walk back any definitive timeline. Arrington also told reporters that Republicans were preparing a “deal sheet” outlining the party’s debt limit demands, prompting confusion when McCarthy later said he had no knowledge of any such thing.

Arkansas Rep. Steve Womack, a former GOP budget chief and top Republican appropriator, said he has spoken to Arrington about how to navigate the “gymnastics” of writing a budget, keeping leadership happy and shepherding Republicans’ debt limit offer.

“He has advocated for some things and put some talking points out that may have ruffled a few feathers — I don’t know, that’s between Jodey and the leadership team,” Womack said. “You’re the budget chair. You need to lead your committee to do its mandated duty.”

Arrington vowed that he has “the confidence and trust of the members” in doing that job. Yet it’s undeniable that the budget chair can most effectively wield power when one party holds both chambers of Congress, thereby putting the party-line maneuver known as reconciliation into play.

Democrats used that filibuster end-around during the last Congress to pass last year’s health, climate and tax bill without a single GOP vote, in addition to Biden’s $1.9 trillion Covid relief plan. Republicans tapped the process in 2017 to pass a massive tax overhaul.

But under divided government, Arrington’s influence is limited — if still meaningful. He’s a senior lieutenant in McCarthy’s drive to force Democrats into spending concessions in exchange for lifting the debt ceiling.

And the speaker’s recent repair of their relationship underscores how crucial Arrington’s buy-in is to projecting the appearance of harmony among House Republicans, despite internal dissonance amplified by the slim margin of their majority.

Asked about McCarthy’s call to seek his chief sponsorship of the debt bill, Arrington downplayed any fractiousness with McCarthy: “No, no, no, no. Look, he and I are both focused on the mission,” he said. “And the mission is to rein in the spending, reduce our debt, grow our economy, and save this country from a debt crisis.”

“All this other stuff,” he added, “is a distraction.”

  • A vote for BRS is a vote for Congress: Bandi Sanjay

A vote for BRS is a vote for Congress: Bandi Sanjay

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Amid ongoing efforts by Telangana Chief Minister Bandi Sanjay to rally Opposition forces around the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) and against the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government at the Centre ahead of next year’s Lok Sabha elections, BJP state president Bandi Sanjay on Sunday said “a vote for the BRS would amount to a vote in Congress’s kitty”.

The firebrand BJP state president made the remark at a press conference in state capital Hyderabad on Sunday.

Earlier on Sunday, Sanjay also lashed out at Asaduddin Owaisi-led All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) for speaking in favour of slain gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed.

    MS Education Academy

The jailed gangster and his brother Ashraf, who were accused in the murder of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader Raju Pal, and subsequently, in the killing of a key witness in that case, Umesh Pal, were shot dead in police custody while being brought for a medical in Prayagraj.

The chilling murder in full view of surrounding media crews drew censure from Opposition forces, who voiced concern over the prevailing law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh.

A day after the gangster siblings were sprayed with bullets by three gunmen posing as journalists, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi had said Atiq was the second former MP from the Muslim community to be “murdered with impunity”.

He even compared Atiq’s assailants with Nathuram Godse, the assassin of Mahatma Gandhi.

“People in police custody were killed. Those who killed them are terrorists and are part of a terror module. They might kill more people. Why did they not slam UAPA (Unlawful Activities Prevention Act) on the assailants? Who gave automatic weapons to the killers? Who gave firearms worth Rs 8 lakh to them?” Owaisi had said.

“They were radicalised people, following in the footsteps of Godse. They must be stopped or else they will kill more people,” Owaisi had said.

Coming down hard on the AIMIM chief over his remarks, Sanjay said it was shameful that the leader of the minority outfit spoke in favour of the slain gangster and his son Asad, who was killed earlier in an exchange of fire with a team from the UP STF in Jhansi.

Questioning the silence of the BRS and the Congress in the matter, Sanjay said, “Why haven’t the BRS or the Congress not condemned it (Owaisi’s statement)? Was Atiq Ahmed a patriot? He looted the poor and committed atrocities on them.”

He alleged further that Owaisi’s party nurtures “terrorists”.

Sanjay has stepped up his offensive against the ruling BRS government in Telangana since he was picked up past midnight hours from his residence and arrested on April 4 in connection with the Telangana State Public Service Commission (TSPSC) paper leak case.

He was granted bail by a magistrate’s court in Warangal on April 6. The court allowed bail on the payment of Rs 20,000 as surety.

Telangana: Verbal duel after BJP’s Rs 25 crore allegation against Congress

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Leaders of BJP and Congress in Telangana were engaged in a verbal duel after BJP MLA Eatala Rajender alleged that state Congress president A. Revanth Reddy took Rs 25 crore from the ruling BRS in Mungode Assembly by-elections.

A day after Revanth Reddy became emotional while taking a vow at Bhagyalakshmi temple to refute Eatala’s allegation, BJP state president Bandi Sanjay Kumar remarked on Sunday that Revanth Reddy had tears in his eyes due to fear of losing his post.

Sanjay clarified that Eatala did not say Rs 25 crore was given to Revanth Reddy. “He only said Rs 25 crore was given to Congress to lose the by-election to BRS,” he said.

    MS Education Academy

Revanth Reddy took a vow at Bhagyalakshmi temple to disprove Eatala’s allegation. The BJP MLA, however, did not turn up at the temple to take the vow as demanded by the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president.

BRS had won the Munugode by-election late last year. The by-election was necessitated by the resignation of sitting MLA Komatireddy Rajagopal Reddy. He quit Congress and contested by the bypoll as BJP candidate.

Sanjay welcomed Revanth Reddy’s visit to Bhagyalakshmi temple, which the BJP is using to push its political narrative. He claimed that his wish that all should come to the temple was getting fulfilled.

Sanjay alleged that the BRS is providing money to Congress for Assembly elections in Karnataka. He also predicted that in Telangana, BRS and Congress will together contest the elections.

The BJP leader said people of Telangana should know that a vote for Congress is a vote for BRS. He urged people not to waste votes on these parties who have deprived the state but give a chance to BJP’s double engine government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Meanwhile, the Congress party has hit back at BJP and alleged that it was BJP which had colluded with BRS. Congress leader Mahesh Kumar Goud said that there is no difference between Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

The Congress leader claimed that the Congress alone was fighting against corruption of BRS. He said the allegations against Congress were part of a conspiracy by the BJP and BRS.

TPCC official spokesperson Addanki Dayakar said that Eatala Rajendar had become “frustrated” at having “failed” to influence any leader to join the BJP. The BJP MLA heads the ‘admission committee’ of the party.

“If Rajendar has evidence, he must accept the TPCC chief’s challenge and swear at Bhagyalakshmi temple,” Dayakar said.

Assam Police issues notice to Congress’ Srinivas BV over harassment allegations

    [ad_1]

Guwahati: The Assam Police on Sunday asked Indian Youth Congress president Srinivas B V to appear before it by May 2 for questioning in connection with allegations of harassment and gender discrimination against him by now-expelled party leader Angkita Dutta.

A police team from Assam issued a notice to Srinivas at his Bengaluru residence, with the order stating that failing to comply with it could lead to his arrest.

“A five-member team of Guwahati Police are in Bengaluru. The notice was pasted on the door of his residence as he was not present,” Joint Commissioner Prateek Thube told PTI over phone.

    MS Education Academy

“He has been given time till May 2 to appear at Dispur police station,” Thube, who is a part of the Guwahati police team in Bengaluru, said.

The notice said that during investigation, “reasonable grounds” have been revealed to question Srinivas in the case and, hence, he has been asked to appear before the investigating officer, at 11 am on May 2.

A set of 10 directions was given to Srinivas for compliance during the period, including not tampering with evidence, not allowing destruction of any evidence relevant to investigation and cooperating with the probe.

“Failure to attend/comply with the terms of this notice can render you liable for arrest under Section 41 A(3) and (4) of CrPC,” it added.

Dutta, who was the Assam Youth Congress chief, had filed a case at the Dispur police station last week, claiming that Srinivas has been “harassing and torturing her for the last six months by making sexist comments, using slang words and also threatening her with dire consequences if she keeps complaining against him to the senior party office bearers”.

She had earlier made similar allegations against him in a series of tweets.

  • No tickets for Muslims from BJP, so why are they upset with Congress?

No tickets for Muslims from BJP, so why are they upset with Congress?

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: Muslims in Karnataka, who comprise a significant group in terms of numbers, are feeling the heat of polarisation politics. The community, which has backed the Congress since Independence, is now tilting towards other emerging political parties to stay relevant.

Under the BJP government, the state passed through the hijab crisis which attracted international attention and divided the community at the school and pre-university levels. Following this, calls to boycott Muslim traders in the premises of Hindu temples and revenge killings have shattered their mindset.

The entire community had to bear the brunt for the action of a few fringe elements who carried out the Mangaluru cooker blast and stabbed Hindu activists over the installation of Veer Savarkar’s flexes in the 75th year of Independence.

    MS Education Academy

The investigations by the Karnataka police and the National Investigation Agency into the spate of incidents of violence cornered them.

The BJP government headed by Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai sent out a further message of alienation by visiting only the residences of Hindu victims who were BJP activists and not even bothering to visit the Muslim victims.

Even as the opposition raised a hue and cry over this, the BJP government did not bother to issue any clarification in this regard. Karnataka Congress president D.K. Shivakumar said that the Muslim community does not deserve this hatred, they have contributed equally to the country.

However, the tone was set for the assembly elections and the Congress had also taken the bait. Hindu candidates were preferred over Muslims while allotting tickets considering the polarisation of votes affecting the chances of victory.

Mohammad Haneef, senior journalist and author, told IANS that Muslims have stopped blindly trusting the Congress party. “The demand was made to the Congress before elections to allot at least 30 tickets to Muslim candidates in 224 seats. The community leaders hoped that at least 22 tickets would be allotted. The Congress is actually fearing the BJP,” he said.

He stated that Muslims blindly voted for Congress candidates belonging to other communities and religion. However, others won’t vote for the Congress candidates who are Muslims. They (Muslims) are looking out for parallel options wherever the Congress came in third place to stop communal forces from coming to power.

Haneef said that this has been discussed by religious leaders and a decision has been taken. In constituencies like Channapatna and Dasarahalli, the JD(S) is a better option for Muslims than the Congress. Not only Muslims, even Jains, Buddhists or any other representatives from the 20 per cent population of minorities were not to be seen in the BJP cabinet.

The Congress has allotted tickets to 14 Muslims out of the 224 assembly seats. Most of them are senior leaders who can win on their own. The party has fielded Yasir Ahamad Khan Pathan against Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai in Shiggaon constituency.

Karnataka Congress leader Tanveer Sait representing Narasimharaja in Mysuru, U.T. Khader representing Mangaluru (Ullal) in Dakshina Kannada, Zameer Ahmad winning continuously from Chamarajpet in Bengaluru are mass leaders who have transcended the barriers of religion and reached out to all sections. Rizwan Arshad representing Shivajinagar is emerging as another mass leader with a clean image.

The BJP has not allotted tickets to any Muslim.

The JD(S) has made C.M. Ibrahim the state president of the party. It has given tickets to 23 Muslim candidates this time.

Meanwhile, amid all the divisive talk and tension in the state, the news of Tabassum Sheik emerging as the topper in the II PUC (Class 12) board exams in the Humanities stream has gone a long way in spreading positivity across the state.

Dalai Lama incident: Congress MLA suggests Chinese hand

    [ad_1]

Shimla: Amid a controversy over a video clip purportedly showing the Dalai Lama asking a boy to “suck” his tongue, Himachal Pradesh Congress MLA Ravi Thakur on Saturday suggested the hand of China in it to defame the Tibetan spiritual head.

Thakur, the MLA from the Lahaul and Spiti district, also expressed solidarity with the Buddhist community protesting against what they called a “malicious propaganda” against the Dalai Lama.

Speaking to reporters, the MLA said the Dalai Lama is a respected Buddhist leader and removing him from the scene would help China to take full control over Tibet.

    MS Education Academy

He also blamed television news channels for exploiting the “unfortunate” incident to garner viewership.

On April 10 last, the Dalai Lama apologised to a boy, his family and friends for the “hurt his words may have caused”, after a video clip purportedly showing the Tibetan spiritual head asking him to suck his tongue sparked a row.

In the two-minute-five-second video, the Dalai Lama also asked the child “to look at those good human beings who create peace, and happiness and not follow those who kill other people”.

In a statement, the Tibetan spiritual head’s office said, “A video clip has been circulating that shows a recent meeting when a young boy asked His Holiness the Dalai Lama if he could give him a hug. His Holiness wishes to apologise to the boy and his family, as well as his many friends across the world, for the hurt his words may have caused.”

Meanwhile, several social and religious organisations issued a joint statement on Saturday saying that Dalia Lama has solely dedicated his life to serve the humanity and global community.

In the Tibetan tradition, “eat my tongue” is a phrase used particularly by grandparents especially if the child asks for candy which grandparents don’t have, the statement said, and added that defaming the Dalai Lama is undeniably a part of Chinese propaganda.

“Dalai Lama is a global icon of peace, a Nobel laureate. He is an embodiment of compassion and a beacon of hope, love and compassion and has been selflessly and tirelessly promoting religious harmony and peace,” according to the statement.

A playful interaction between the Dalai Lama and a boy, a genuine affection and playful moment have been ruined beyond imagination, the statement added.

CBI summons to Satya Pal Malik ‘vengeful’ says Congress

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Congress targeted the central government on Saturday over the CBI summons to former Jammu and Kashmir governor Satya Pal Malik, saying it is intended to send out a message to him and all those speaking the truth to remain silent.

Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera said that though the summons itself is not surprising, what has come as a surprise is that the “vengeful” act came 10 days after he raised relevant and pertinent questions related to national security.

“We don’t know why it took 10 days for the prime minister. Normally he is very prompt in silencing his critics. What did Satya Pal Malik do? He asked some very relevant, very pertinent questions…related to national security,” he told reporters.

    MS Education Academy

The CBI has asked Malik to answer certain queries in connection with an alleged insurance scam in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said on Friday.

This is the second time in seven months that Malik will be questioned by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). He was questioned in October last year after he concluded his gubernatorial responsibilities in Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir, Goa and Meghalaya.

Khera said Malik had pointed to the prime minister in a telephonic conversation that the Pulwama terrorist attack on February 14, 2019 was due to a security lapse, “but the prime minister asked him to keep quiet”.

“The CBI summons yesterday to Satya Pal Malik are a reiteration of the same advice which the prime minister gave to him on the evening of 14th February, 2019. Mr. Satya Pal Malik, this time, is being asked to keep quiet, however the messenger is the CBI,” Khera said.

“This message is not being given to Satya Pal Malik alone, but to all those who are not paid and are neither scared of raids while raising their voice for truth…. Those who have the courage to ask questions of the government and the power, such people are being threatened that if they open their mouth like Malik, they will also see the CBI come knocking at their doors,” he alleged.

The Congress leader said it is ironic that the CBI is knocking at the door of the whistleblower and not the person accused by Malik of indulging in malpractices.

“We don’t know whether Mr. Ram Madhav has been summoned by the CBI” after Malik alleged that he was involved in corruption, Khera said.

Madhav has strongly rejected the charge. “The CBI has already thoroughly investigated the matter. I will be filing defamation charges against the peddlers of these false allegations very soon,” the RSS leader said.

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh shared his letter to the CBI chief asking for summoning Home Minister Amit Shah after he made a statement before the Meghalaya assembly polls suggesting that the state government was the “most corrupt”

“Satya Pal Malik has just been summoned by CBI apparently on his charges of insurance scams in J&K and on his being offered bribes to clear files. But why is CBI still not summoning Home Minister on his charge that Meghalaya was running the most corrupt government,” Ramesh said on Twitter while sharing his letter to the CBI director in March.

New Delhi: Assam Youth Congress president Angkita Dutta was suspended from the primary membership of the Congress for six years on Saturday for anti-party activities.

Dutta had accused Indian Youth Congress chief Srinivas B V of causing mental agony to her after she levelled sexual harassment charges against former IYC president Keshav Kumar.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) slammed the Congress over the move, saying this is its model of women empowerment and its slogan of “ladki hoon, lad sakti hoon” (I am a woman and I can fight) is hollow.

    MS Education Academy

“Congress president has expelled Dr Angkita Dutta, president, Assam Pradesh Youth Congress, from the primary membership of the party, for six years for her anti-party activities with immediate effect,” Tariq Anwar, member-secretary of the Disciplinary Action Committee of the Congress, said in an order.

Hitting out at the Congress, BJP’s IT cell head Amit Malviya tweeted: “This is Congress’s model of women empowerment!”

“Sack the woman who alleged harassment instead of providing a platform to hear her grievances. The manner in which Angkita Dutta has been removed from the Congress is uninspiring for women,” he said.

Malviya also said, “Ladki hoon, lad sakti hoon is a hollow slogan.”

The Congress had come up with the slogan in the run-up to last year’s Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls.

Dutta had tweeted: “When previous IYC president Keshav Kumar had sexually harassed and because of #MeToo came out. He was compelled to remove. Now despite being mentally harassed and discriminated by B V Srinivas for 6 months. I have been told to keep mum and no enquiry is initiated.”

“Honestly I am aware this could lead to an end of my political career. If this is the price I have to pay, so be it. About me meeting some BJP leader, one is welcome to check CCTV footage of home and office where you will probably see me reading trolls my colleagues are spreading,” she tweeted on Friday.

Dutta was issued a show-cause notice by the Assam Congress, asking her to explain why action should not be taken against her for her alleged antiparty activities.

  • Congress’ dilemma: Gehlot or Pilot for CM Candidate in upcoming polls?

Congress’ dilemma: Gehlot or Pilot for CM Candidate in upcoming polls?

    [ad_1]

With the Assembly election later this year, Rajasthan faces a political crisis again. The party lost Punjab last year because of mishandling by the Gandhis by backing the wrong horse. Will the Congress leadership be able to save Rajasthan from going the Punjab way?

Congress and BJP have been alternating in Government, and now it is the turn of the BJP to win the elections in Rajasthan. Congress desperately needs to retain the big state in the Assembly polls.

In a catch-22 situation, Congress is still dithering whether to face the electorate with Ashok Gehlot as Chief Minister or the rebel Sachin Pilot instead.

    MS Education Academy

Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and his former Deputy chief minister Sachin Pilot are at loggerheads again. The power tussle between the two started in 2018, first over party tickets and later over the chief minister’s position. Gehlot wants to keep his job, and Pilot wants to grab it immediately.

Pilot had rebelled twice in the meanwhile. In 2020, he led a revolt with the tacit support of the BJP with 20 of his legislators; the one-month-long political crisis ended after the Congress high command promised to look into the issues raised by Sachin Pilot.

The second time was in September 2022, when the Gehlot camp consisting of 90 MLAs, submitted their resignation letters to prevent Sachin Pilot from succeeding Gehlot. This was when Ashok was offered the party chief’s position. Gehlot wanted to be chief minister and rejected the party post.

Pilot thinks it is now or never as the time is running out. Though he is only 46, if Pilot misses the boat, his next shot would be in 2028. He is not in the mood to waste 5 years of political life.

Last week, Pilot announced a one-day dharna accusing the Gehlot Government of failing to act against the excise mafia, illegal mining, land encroachment, or the Lalit Modi affidavit case sat in dharna for a day. He complained Gehlot had been reluctant to act against the predecessor Vasundhara-led Government. Incidentally, Vasundhara Raje (BJP) quietly helped Gehlot win the confidence vote in 2020. Also, she is staking her claims to become chief minister again.

Sachin is young, charismatic, ambitious, articulate, and sophisticated. He is also close to Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi; However, he is a rebel, impatient, and ambitious. There are speculations BJP might offer him a ministerial berth. With few young leaders left, PIlot’s quitting could hurt Congress before the polls.

Ashok Gehlot is 71, asking the electorate for one last chance. If disturbed now, he will break the party.

The options before Congress are few. One is to counsel patience to Sachin. He has chosen corruption as an issue this time. When Rahul Gandhi is spearheading corruption, how could they blame Sachin? Moving Pilot to Delhi to give organizational responsibilities was one of the options, but Pilot would not be satisfied.

Alienating Gehlot also will have repercussions. One option is to convince the one-time magician Gehlot to step down. Gehlot had been the chief minister twice earlier and was an experienced leader from the OBC community. He has shown many times that he is a man in control. But, he is an aging leader, lacks charisma, and indulges in factionalism. He also faces anti-incumbency.

It will be an acid test for the six-month-old Congress Chief Mallikharjun Kharge busy amid Karnataka Assembly polls.

Last month, he was toying with making PIlot the state party chief, which would have soothed Sachin but upset Gehlot. Kharge may be waiting for the Karnataka elections to conclude. With pretty good chances of winning the state, he could deal with both leaders from a position of strength.

Ultimately, it depends on the party’s high command to find an acceptable formula for both. But this is easier said than done. Congress leadership has little time to dither.

The first and foremost is to quieten the warring camps. The Congress has roped veteran Kamal Nath to mediate between the two sides.

Secondly, the High command should act swiftly.

Keeping the crisis unaddressed will result in further chaos. It might also affect the party’s chances in Karnataka.

Thirdly, Kharge should ensure Rajasthan is not messed up as they did in Punjab by backing the wrong horse and losing the state.

Fourthly, there are few politically savvy peacemakers like Ahmed Patel. Also, Sonia Gandhi has taken a backseat.

Kamalnath has reportedly offered Pilot a ‘meaty’ role in the AICC secretariat, a member of the Congress Working Committee, and a vital role in the screening committee for the upcoming Rajasthan elections.

The High Command is not willing to disturb Gehlot. So, Congress must tread carefully, as any misstep would mean losing Rajasthan. It will need all the mediating skills to resolve the issue at a time when Congress needs to win and not lose.
