  • BJP, Congress in war of words over Rahul’s remarks in UK

BJP, Congress in war of words over Rahul’s remarks in UK

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The political slugfest over Rahul Gandhi’s remarks in the UK intensified on Tuesday with the BJP accusing him of insulting India’s democracy from foreign land and the Congress hitting back, saying the ruling party is “rattled” whenever he speaks.

While former Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad accused Gandhi of seeking the intervention of Europe and the US in India, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh alleged that the BJP leader was distorting, twisting and lying “with a straight face”.

Addressing a press conference, Prasad expressed his party’s disapproval of Gandhi “misusing the forum of British Parliament” to “insult” India by spreading “shameful” lies and unfounded claims, and said there needed to be a “proper rebuttal”.

He accused the Congress leader of seeking to shame India’s democracy, polity, Parliament, judicial system and strategic security from a foreign land with his speeches in Britain.

If people of India do not support him and he keeps losing elections, then he should not tell lies from a foreign country to vent out his frustration, Prasad said.

The BJP leader sought reactions from Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge if he “feels” that he is an elected president of the party.

He and his predecessor Sonia Gandhi should make their stand clear on Rahul Gandhi’s “utterly irresponsible” statements and whether the opposition party supports them or not, Prasad said.

Hitting back at Prasad, Ramesh tweeted, “Mr. Ravi Shankar Prasad is doing what he and his Supremo do best– distort, twist, defame and lie with a straight face.”

Tagging a media report on Prasad’s remarks, Congress’ media department head Pawan Khera said on Twitter, “There is nothing more amusing than watching an unemployed leader of a ruling party trying to seek relevance and re-employment.”

“Those who have a full time job of twisting statements of opposition leaders forget their own favourite slogan ‘Ab Kii Baar, Trump Sarkaar’,” Khera said.

Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate also hit out at the BJP over its criticism of Gandhi and said that the former Congress president made a very powerful statement as far as democratic values in India are concerned.

“There was no doubt in his mind, he said this is our problem, this is an internal problem, this is an Indian problem and we will find solutions within India,” Shrinate told reporters here at the AICC headquarters.

“He (Gandhi) also went on to say that when 140 crore people are part of your democratic system, the fate of Indian democracy impacts the fate of democracy on the planet. He is actually telling the world that India will decide the fate and direction of democracies all over the world, it is a hugely laudable statement,” she said.

“If anybody had any sense they would applaud him but instead the Modi government, its two-rupee trolls, its MLAs, MPs, ministers, out of job ministers, are all running forth as to who would stoop lower,” Shrinate said.

Each time Rahul Gandhi gives a statement, the BJP is “rattled”, she claimed.

She also said that if the BJP has issues with what he has said, it should debate all those topics he has spoken on in Parliament.

Gandhi told British parliamentarians in London on Monday that microphones in front of opposition members in Lok Sabha are often silenced.

During an event organised by veteran Indian-origin Opposition Labour Party MP Virendra Sharma within the House of Commons complex, he said opposition parties in India are often not allowed to debate issues in Parliament.

Prasad said Gandhi has forgotten all parliamentary norms, political propriety and “democratic shame” by criticising Indians from abroad.

He further said people of India neither listen nor understand him and supporting him is a distant thing.

Therefore, Gandhi goes abroad and laments that India’s democracy is in danger. This is a matter of great shame, Prasad added.

“Rahul Gandhi has insulted everything, including India’s democracy, parliament, people, political system, judicial system and strategic security,” the former Union minister said.

He also accused Gandhi of seeking the intervention of Europe and the US in India and said he had gone against the consensus in India against any interference in its internal affairs by foreign powers.

“Rahul Gandhi has tried to embarrass the country by saying that Europe and America should interfere in the internal affairs of India,” he said.

The BJP leader also slammed Rahul Gandhi for his condemnation of the RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh), claiming that the Hindutva organisation has been serving society and the nation.

Gandhi’s remarks at various interactions in the UK have led to a war of words between the BJP and the Congress with the ruling party accusing him of maligning India on foreign soil and the opposition party hitting back by citing instances of Prime Minister Narendra Modi raking up internal politics abroad.

Congress leader Govind Singh challenges ED’s notice in Supreme Court

    [ad_1]

Bhopal: Senior Congress MLA and Leader of Opposition in Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly Govind Singh moved the Supreme Court against a summon issued to him by Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday.

Sources privy with the development told IANS that while hearing Singh’s counsel and Rajya Sabha MP Vivek Tankha, the court issued orders to list the case “when this bench is sitting in a combination of three judges.”

The notice was issued by ED’s assistant director from New Delhi asking him to appear before the agency under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act – 2002, on January 27.

In his plea, Singh through his legal counsel Tankha has asked reason behind the action.

Earlier in January, addressing a Press conference at Congress headquarters in Bhopal, Singh had alleged that notice was issued to him at the behest of the ruling BJP.

Singh had also accused the Central agency of working as a ‘political agent’.

  • Norfolk Southern to clash with Congress on toxic derailment

Norfolk Southern to clash with Congress on toxic derailment

    [ad_1]

    train derailment ohio 04120

The plan gives Norfolk Southern President and CEO Alan Shaw something to present to senators when he appears before the Senate EPW Committee Thursday — but it’s not likely to satisfy Democrats on the panel.

Most of the six-point plan to be announced Monday involves improving the equipment Norfolk Southern uses along tracks to help sense when a train’s wheels are overheating, including boosting the number of detectors and reviewing how far apart they’re spaced. The railroad also says it wants to seek industry consensus on standards for this equipment, which now are determined by individual companies. And it says it wants to accelerate research on a new automated inspection technology.

In a statement accompanying the plan, Shaw said the preliminary findings of the National Transportation Safety Board, an independent agency probing the disaster, made it clear that “a comprehensive industry effort” was needed to improve safety and that Norfolk Southern is “not waiting to take action.”

But that list of actions falls far short of the changes the Biden administration is seeking — such as upgrading to a faster braking system, providing more notification to communities about hazardous materials traveling through their areas and paying workers sick leave.

The Department of Transportation has said it also doesn’t just want railroads to upgrade their automated track inspection equipment. It also wants them to stop seeking to cut back on human inspections.

The Biden administration has asked Congress to make a series of additional changes as well, including increasing the current $225,000 cap on fines for safety violations.

Raising the cap is one of the provisions included in a bill introduced last week by a bipartisan group of senators, including the delegations from Ohio and Pennsylvania where the impacts of the derailment were felt. That bill would also subject more trains that carry hazardous materials to safety regulations designed to protect communities, and would require at least two crew members on board each train — changes the railroads have fought hard to prevent.

The bill also would mandate that railroads have detectors for overheating wheels every 10 miles of track — not every 15, as included in Norfolk Southern’s action plan.

Norfolk Southern hasn’t specifically discussed the bill or DOT’s requests beyond saying that the “rail industry needs to learn as much as we can from East Palestine,” as the company said in a statement to POLITICO.

“Norfolk Southern has committed to working with industry to develop practices and technologies that could help prevent an incident like this in the future,” the statement read. “This incident requires a broad industry response, and we will also work with the owners of the rail cars on the integrity and safety of the equipment we use.”

Telangana: Congress party slams BRS in Nirmal during foot march

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Telangana All India Congress Committee (AICC) in-charge Manikrao Thakre participated in the ‘Haath Se Haath Jodo’ poru yatra from Sirgapur to Nirmal on Saturday.

Speaking at the street corner meeting at Shivaji Chowk in Nirmal, Manikrao Thakre claimed that there has been a tremendous response to the ‘Haath Se Haath Jodo’ yatra across Telangana, adding the Congress party is all set to return to power.

He accused chief minister K Chandrashekhar Rao of cheating people with false promises and fake claims.

“Congress cadre has been exposing the failures of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) government in Telangana and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government at the Centre by conducting the door-to-door campaign,” he said.

Addressing the meeting, senior Congress MP N Uttam Kumar Reddy criticized the BRS government for the rising rate of unemployment.

Reddy said, “More than 40 lakh youth remain jobless to this date. The BRS government is boasting about filling up a few thousand vacancies, but it is not addressing the remaining jobless youth.”

He said, “Exams were conducted for recruitment of 20,177 posts for Group-1, Group-2, Group-3 as well as police jobs. A whopping 22.01 lakh candidates applied and an average of 756 candidates competed for each available vacancy in Group-1. Similarly, the average number of candidates per post for Group-2 and Group-3 is 704 and 390 respectively.”

“If the government recruited 17,516 people for police recruitment, what should the remaining 7.30 lakh candidates do? They need alternate jobs, but the BRS government is not even providing an unemployment allowance of Rs 3,016 per month,” he said.

AICC programme implementation committee chairman Alleti Maheshwar Reddy alleged that CM KCR ‘hijacked’ the original dream of Telangana.

“He came to power by exploiting the sentiments of Telangana people but did nothing to achieve the goals of Neelu (water), Nidhulu (funds) and Niyamakalu (jobs). KCR gave up Telangana’s share of the Godavari and Krishna rivers to Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh,” Reddy said.

Maheshwar alleged that KCR pushed Telangana into huge debts of over Rs 5 lakh crore almost equal to two full annual budgets. “Further, over 40 lakh youth are still jobless in the State. They include thousands of youth who actively participated in the statehood movement,” he said.

He said that the state government is unable to pay salaries to the employees on time and no funds are left to be spent on welfare schemes.

“However, the assets of KCR and his family keep increasing and their party BRS became one of the richest parties in the country,” he alleged.

“KCR became the Chief Minister by exploiting the Telangana sentiments twice and now he disowned the state by forming the BRS to accomplish his dream of national politics. KCR is an opportunist and tomorrow he might even suggest a merger of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh if it suits his political goals,” he alleged.

He dubbed minister Indrakarana Reddy ‘Qabza Reddy’ and alleged that Indrakarana was more focused on land grabbing than serving the people. He said that the minister took no interest in resolving problems being faced by students at IIIT Basar.

He said, “The minister did not meet adivasis when they were sent to jail. Indrakaran Reddy failed to bring any development in Bhainsa despite being in the cabinet for the last eight years.”

Congress calls for Karnataka bandh on March 9 against corruption

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: The Congress’ Karnataka unit has given a call for state-wide bandh on March 9 to oppose “loot” and “corruption” in the state, a party release said on Sunday.

State President D.K. Shivakumar termed as “disgusting” the corruption practiced by BJP in the state. “The 40 percent commission has destroyed the life of all sections of the society… Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai government is by the corrupt, for the corruption and to the corruption,” he claimed.

The achievements of the BJP government are taking 40 percent commission in every tender, 40 percent commission in all school funds, 30 percent commission in funds released to religious mutts, and bribe for every posting and transfer, Shivakumar alleged.

There were scandals in recruitment of sub-inspectors of police, associate professors, assistant engineers, junior engineers and a recent addition is the rampant corruption that came to light in the Karnataka Soaps and Detergents Ltd (KSDL), he said.

Shivakumar said that to avoid inconvenience to the public, the protest will be staged symbolically between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. and education institutions, hospitals, transport and other services are kept out of bandh. “Our demand is that CM Bommai should be sacked or he should resign from his post,” he demanded.

Congress questions absence of Deputy LS Speaker for past 4 yrs

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Sunday questioned the non-appointment of a Deputy Speaker in the Lok Sabha, terming it “unconstitutional”.

“For the last 4 years there has been no Deputy Speaker in the Lok Sabha. This is unconstitutional. What a far cry from March 1956 when Nehru proposed the name of Sardar Hukam Singh an Opposition Akali Dal MP & a critic of Nehru for the post & he was unanimously elected”, he said in a tweet.

In the Lok Sabha, there has been a precedent of appointing a opposition MP as Deputy Speaker but in the current house, the post has been vacant since its constitution.

In the first Narendra Modi government, AIADMK’s M. Thambidurai was the Deputy Speaker while in the UPA regime, the post was held Akali Dal’s Charanjit Singh Atwal and then BJP’s Kariya Munda.

  • Both Congress, BJP want all other political parties to cease to exist: AAP

Both Congress, BJP want all other political parties to cease to exist: AAP

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Sunday slammed the Congress for not standing by it on the issue of Manish Sisodia’s arrest, and alleged that both the grand old party and the BJP want all other political parties to cease to exist.

The Congress never stands by the Opposition and engages in a war of words with the BJP merely to “fool” the country, AAP chief spokesperson Saurabh Bharadwaj charged at a press conference.

Bharadwaj was replying to a question whether the Congress not joining the leaders of the nine opposition parties in writing a joint letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the alleged misuse of central agencies was an indication that the grand old party and the AAP would never be together under a united opposition umbrella.

“If you look at the history, you will find the Congress has never stood by the Opposition. Whenever it comes to raising voice on national issues, the Congress goes missing. They have gone missing today as well,” Bharadwaj charged.

“The entire world knows that Sisosdia has been arrested. Congress, which considers itself the big brother and says it will lead if any opposition alliance is formed, should have reached out to the opposition parties,” he said.

“Where is the Congress, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi?” he asked, alleging that all of them have gone missing because they are happy with what’s happening in the country and with the AAP leaders.

Bharadwaj said the Congress is silent on the issue of alleged misuse of the central probe agencies and the arrest of the AAP leaders because both the grand old party and the BJP “want all opposition parties to cease to exist.”

“So that just the BJP and the Congress remain there,” he charged.

The AAP leader claimed that the opposition parties wanted to corner the BJP during the first part of the Budget Session on the alleged stock manipulation by the Adani group but the Congress gave the ruling party “a kind of safe passage” and let Parliament function by “breaking the opposition unity” on the issue.

“For almost one decade, the BJP has been talking about sending Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to jail. The BJP has been saying that they will send Robert Vadra also to jail. But nothing happened so far,” he said.

“Both the Congress and the BJP are engaged in a war of words just to fool the country,” the AAP spokesperson charged, adding “it’s just an enmity of convenience”.

Leaders of nine opposition parties, including Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, have written a joint letter to Prime Minister Modi alleging “blatant misuse” of central agencies against the members of the opposition.

The signatories of the letter are Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, his West Bengal counterpart Mamata Bannerjee, Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann, Tejashwi Yadav (RJD), Sharad Pawar (NCP), Farooq Abdullah (Jammu & Kashmir National Conference), Uddhav Thackeray (Shiv Sena, UBT) and Akhilesh Yadav of the Samajwadi Party.

“The blatant misuse of central agencies against the members of the opposition appears to suggest that we have transitioned from being a democracy to an autocracy. The misuse of central agencies and constitutional offices like that of the governor to settle scores outside of the electoral battlefield is strongly condemnable as it does not bode well for our democracy,” the letter read.

Highlighting Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia’s arrest by the CBI in connection with the irregularities in the liquor policy, the leaders said the charges against the AAP leader were outright baseless and smack of a political conspiracy.

“His arrest has enraged people across the country. Sisodia is recognised globally for transforming Delhi’s school education. His arrest will be cited worldwide as an example of a political witch-hunt and further confirm what the world was only suspecting – that India’s democratic values stand threatened under an authoritarian BJP regime,” they alleged.

Congress begins ‘ByeByeKCR’ campaign ahead of Telangana polls

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Telangana Congress President Revamnth Reddy has begun a campaign against the chief minister K Chandrashekhar Rao ahead of assembly polls.

KCR, who visited Nizamabad district on Wednesday, said that he is getting old, which the TPCC caught and tweeted saying #ByeByeKCR.

Since then, the representatives and supporters of Congress are cited using the hashtag in their tweets.

Such campaigns have been used as a political strategy by opposition parties in the past decade and are often seen trending online and offline.

In the 2019 elections, slogans against the then Chandrababu government were raised saying ‘Bye Bye Babu’ where the YSR leaders including Jagan and Sharmila used to mention the slogan wherever they toured.

Revanth Reddy’s ‘Hath se Hath jodo yatra’ in the Bhimadevarapalli mandal of Hanmakonda district heard the party supporters chanting ‘Bye Bye KCR’ during the march.

We are descendants of Ram-Krishna: Rajasthan Congress MLA Shafia Zubair

    [ad_1]

Jaipur: Rajasthan Congress MLA Shafia Zubair has said that people from Mev community, including herself, were “descendants of Rama-Krishna.”

“People from the Mev community reside in Alwar, Bharatpur, Nuh and some parts of Mathura, where Lord Krishna was born. I also got a little history traced from the people who wrote the genealogy to know what our history is. It came out that Mevs (people hailing from the Mewat region) are descendants of Ram and Krishna,” she said during a debate in the state assembly on grant of allocation to the Education Department yesterday.

“The blood does not change with change in religion. We have the blood of Ram and Krishna only,” the MLA from Alwar’s Ramgarh added.

While, Congress MLA Ameen Khan said that India is not a secular country.

“We do not consider this country as secular at all. Secularism came to an end on October 31, 1984 (when former PM Indira Gandhi was assassinated),” Khan said.

“We know Hinduism very well. A Hindu also protects another human being,” he added.

Reacting to the statements of Congress leaders, cabinet minister Pratap Singh Khachariyawas said that he was not present in the house during Ameen Khan’s speech.

“If Shafia Zubair has given a statement like this (descendants of Ram-Krishna) then she is absolutely right,” he added.
