AP: Congress strongman Kiran Kuman Reddy resigns, likely to join BJP

    [ad_1]

Amaravati: Congress suffered a setback as former chief minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh Kiran Kumar Reddy resigned from the party on Saturday.

He submitted his resignation letter to the president of the Indian National Congress, Mallikarjun Kharge, on March 11.

The four-time MLA from Chittoor district is likely to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), reports suggest.

Reddy’s association with the Congress party has been on and off since the state’s bifurcation in 2014. He was the last chief minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh and was strongly against the division.

When the UPA government decided to divide AP, Reddy resigned as the chief minister and quit the party to float his own called the Jai Samaikyandhra Party.

However, the party neither gained momentum nor acceptance from the public, following which Reddy returned to Congress in 2018. However, he alleged that he was repeatedly sidelined by the party when asked for a better position. He even paid a visit to Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi for the same.

He was inactive during the 2019 General Elections and did not participate in the recently concluded Bharat Jodo Yatra.

Congress, JD(S) used Karnataka as ATMs: Anurag Thakur

    [ad_1]

Kolar: Union Minister Anurag Thakur Sunday alleged that the Congress and JD(U) used Karnataka as an ATM to fund their leaders.

Thakur, on the campaign trail in the state where the Assembly election is slated to be held in a couple of months, accused Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of “spreading lies” about the “closure” of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).

He asserted that the BJP government ensured the state-run unit emerged as the country’s biggest helicopter manufacturing unit.

The BJP leader undertook a roadshow in Kolar and addressed a meeting of the party’s SC and ST Morchas in Bengaluru.

“When there was a Congress government in Karnataka, Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi used the state as an ATM. The money went from here. Under the JD(S)-led government, the state had become an ATM for one family,” Thakur alleged.

He also accused Rahul Gandhi of “maligning” India on foreign soil. “These are the same people because of whom a part of Kashmir is occupied by Pakistan,” Thakur said.

He said Karnataka had benefited from the “double-engine” government as Prime Minster Narendra Modi ensured that Karnataka received funds for development works. “Modi sent money to Karnataka and not the other way round.”

Thakur claimed that under Congress rule, Rs 6,000 crore was spent for building roads and highways in Karnataka, but under Modi’s leadership, Rs 50,000 crore was spent for the purpose in five years.

  • Congress takes credit for pushing CBI to probe BRS’ Kavitha

Congress takes credit for pushing CBI to probe BRS’ Kavitha

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The Congress Party on Saturday took the credit for ‘pushing’ the Central Bureau of Investigation to probe BRS MLC Kavitha’s house by raising concerns about the Delhi Liquour policy case.

Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera also questioned the sources of funding that the BRS has in order to transition from a regional party to a national party. “Where is the funding for the BRS’s transition from local TRS to national coming from?” Khera questioned.

Khera alleged that the BRS is looting the money of common people and is using that wealth for its growth.

On Kavitha’s hunger strike for the Women’s reservation bill, Khera asked if the MLC ‘suddenly’ remembered the cause after all these years. “Once I got down at Shamshabad, I saw the BRS posters. Only Kavitha’s face is visible as if she is the only woman in the BRS. As an ex-MP, how many times did she speak of Women’s rights in the Parliament?” he asked.

    K. Kavitha on Saturday joined the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) probe in connection with the Delhi Excise Policy scam case.

She reached the ED office at around 11.05 a.m., and her statement will be recorded under section 50 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.

A woman deputy director level official will record her testimony.

Kavitha, the daughter of Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, was summoned to join the probe on Thursday, but she wrote a letter seeking more time after which her questioning was postponed for Saturday.

On Friday, she staged a protest at Jantar Mantar and claimed that she had never met former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, adding that her name was unnecessaryily being dragged into the matter.

According to the ED, Kavitha is also one of the representatives of South Group which allegedly paid a kickback of Rs 100 crore to AAP leaders.

The BRS leader might be confronted with the Hyderabad-based businessman Arun Pillai who was arrested on Friday as the latter is also from the South Group.

“The South Group was represented by Abhishek Boinpally, Arun Pillai and Buchi Babu. Boinpalli facilitated the transfer of Rs 100 crore kickback in connivance and conspiracy with Nair and his associate Dinesh Arora. Now we will have to confront Pillai with Kavitha,” an ED source had said.

Sisodia is currently on ED’s remand.

There are possibilities that Kavitha might be confronted with Sisodia in connection with the alleged kickback.

  • Congress moves against TikTok amid Biden administration ‘stalemate’

Congress moves against TikTok amid Biden administration ‘stalemate’

    [ad_1]

The new legislation — co-sponsored by eleven other lawmakers, including six Democrats — underscores rising bipartisan impatience with Biden’s efforts to contain TikTok and deal with broader digital threats from China. With the administration’s own national security review of TikTok, which is being conducted by the the interagency Committee on Foreign Investment in the U.S., bogged down by internal disagreement, the White House quickly voiced its support for Warner’s bill Tuesday. The move signaled to lawmakers that any near-term action may have to come from Congress.

“I am concerned that CFIUS has come to a stalemate situation,” said Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, the head Democrat on the House Select Committee on China, who has signed on to a separate bill to ban TikTok. “When you have a stalemate then you end up with the status quo, and the status quo is unacceptable.”

“Clearly it’s a fraught subject for evaluation,” added Sen. Mitt Romney, a Republican sponsor of Warner’s bill, who said he hoped the “broad authorities” in the legislation would help the administration find a solution.

Those lawmakers and other policymakers worry the Chinese government could get its hands on TikTok’s massive amounts of user data — including from more than 100 million American users. It’s a widespread concern: Congress, the European Union and a handful of states have all moved to prohibit the use of TikTok on government devices.

In addition to Warner’s bill, Krishnamoorthi and his counterpart on the China Select Committee, Chair Mike Gallagher, have put forward a bill to ban the app outright. So has House Foreign Affairs Committee Chair Michael McCaul. Negotiations continue between lawmakers on how to harmonize the bill as the legislative session continues.

The White House also recognizes the risk, directing CFIUS to restart a national security review of the app early in the administration, after the Trump administration’s efforts to force a sale of the app ran aground in court. But that review has dragged on without resolution after months of debate between Treasury department officials and representatives of various national security agencies.

The White House, which worked with Warner in drafting the bill, says that the CFIUS review of TikTok continues and declined to comment on any potential impasse. But a senior administration official also added that Warner’s legislation would help the administration evaluate TikTok and other foreign apps by “allowing us to take a comprehensive approach to these threats.”

It’s not just the CFIUS review that remains up in the air. The impasse has delayed a separate Biden executive order on foreign data collection planned for over a year, and the administration still has not finished a separate Commerce Department rule on information and communications technology.

Warner and his co-sponsors hope their legislation can help nudge the administration ahead on multiple fronts. The bill would give the Commerce Department new authority and processes to evaluate the national security risks of TikTok and other foreign-made apps and products. It’s designed to override a section of U.S. law, known as the Berman amendments, that previously derailed the Trump administration’s efforts to ban the app.

“Regardless of what happens with TikTok, we need this stronger tool to go after foreign technology,” Warner said.

But some Republican China hawks remain skeptical. Sen. Marco Rubio, the top Republican on the Intelligence Committee, said he opposed Warner’s bill because it only gave the administration new authority to regulate TikTok, rather than mandating an outright ban. He has signed on to Gallagher and Krishnamoorthi’s bill to prohibit the app in the U.S.

“I don’t think the White House wants to do anything” about TikTok, said Rubio. “I support a ban.”

Karimnagar: The Congress on Friday promised to extend government benefits to tenant farmers in Telangana, besides setting up land tribunals in the state.

BJP MLC resigns from legislative council in Karnataka, joins Congress

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party legislative council member Puttanna on Thursday joined the Congress alleging large scale corruption in the government.

Puttanna said he has tendered his resignation from the council as well as the primary membership of the BJP.

The four-time member of Legislative Council was representing the teachers’ constituency of Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural and Ramanagara districts. He was re-elected to the council in October 2020 and his tenure ends on October 2026.

“Today I arrived at the decision and resigned from the BJP’s primary membership and legislative council membership. I submitted my resignation letter to the office of the legislative council chairman,” Puttanna told reporters.

He alleged that the corruption prevailing in Karnataka forced him to take the decision.

“The dream with which I had joined the BJP could not be materialised because of the suffocation,” the leader said.

Puttanna alleged that not a single problem could be solved by the government.

  • World Uyghur Congress nominated for Nobel Peace Prize

World Uyghur Congress nominated for Nobel Peace Prize

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The World Uyghur Congress has been nominated by parliamentarians from Canada and Norway for the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize for its contributions to human rights and shedding light on Chinese repression of the Uyghur people in the far western region of Xinjiang, according to a media report.

It’s the first time the Germany-based group has been nominated for the prestigious prize, RFA reported.

China has faced intensifying international criticism for treatment of the 11 million predominantly Muslim Uyghur people, whose culture, language, religion, dress and food is distinct from those of the Han Chinese majority, the reports said.

The United Nations’ human rights office had issued a damning report in August last year that highlighted widespread arbitrary detentions and other actions by China that it said may constitute crimes against humanity.

The United States, the European Parliament and the legislatures of several other Western countries have declared that the abuses, including the arbitrary detention of an estimated 1.8 million Uyghurs and other Turkic minorities, constitute genocide and crimes against humanity, RFA reported.

The World Uyghur Congress has “made a crucial contribution in drawing international attention to the overwhelming campaign of physical, religious, linguistic, and cultural repression currently being waged by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) against the Uyghur and other Turkic people in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China, a campaign that many parliamentarians define as genocide”, wrote Alexis Brunelle-Duceppe, a Canadian member of parliament, in the nomination letter, RFA reported.

Brunelle-Duceppe joined fellow Canadian parliamentarian Sameer Zuberi, who is the chair of the Subcommittee on International Human Rights, and Ane Breivik, leader of the Liberal Party of Norway, in nominating WUC.

WUC President Dolkun Isa said that it is a great honour for his organisation to be nominated for Nobel Peace Prize.

“This is despite China’s incessant demonisation to conflate our peaceful international advocacy for Uyghur rights with terrorism and separatism,” he told Radio Free Asia.

“Through decades-long global efforts to demonise the WUC, China has attempted to put roadblocks to our advocacy work and silence our voice in the world, thus continuing its ongoing crimes against the Uyghur people unabated.”

Telangana: Support ‘Haath Se Haath Jodo Yatra’, Congress to Muslims

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Senior Congress leader Mohammed Ali Shabbir appealed to the Muslim community to support the ongoing Hath Se Haath Jodo yatra while addressing the Muslim Intellectuals Meet in Karimnagar on Wednesday.

The former Telangana leader of the Opposition urged the gathering to trust the party which is on a mission to expose the failures of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi-led state government.

“Throughout the last eight-and-a-half years, chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao has been cheating the minorities. He promised to increase the Muslim reservation in jobs and education from the existing 4% to 12%. But no efforts are being made to enact it. KCR has been cheating the Muslim community by wearing the fake mask of secularism,” Shabbir alleged.

Shabbir also said that Chattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel, Congress MP Jairam Ramesh, and other senior leaders will soon address the people of Karimnagar.

“Congress has always supported and empowered the Muslim community, I urge you to lend your support to the Haath Se Haath Jodo yatra,” Shabbir said.

The Haath Se Haath Jodo yatra entered its 20th day with Congress leader Revanth Reddy leading it.
