Telangana Congress promises e-bikes to girl students if voted to power

Hyderabad: Telangana Congress on Monday promised to provide electric scooters to every girl student of 18 years of age and above, as part of its ‘Hyderabad Youth Declaration’, a charter of commitments that the party would fulfil if it comes to power in the State Assembly elections that are to be held by the end of the year.
In what could be termed as a ‘mini manifesto’ before the Assembly polls expected to be held by December, the party released the declaration in the presence of AICC general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
The party also said that the young men and women who laid down their lives during the first and final phases of the movement for Telangana as a separate state would be recognised as martyrs, and one of their family members would be given a government job besides Rs 25,000 monthly pension to the martyr’s mother or father or wife.

As many as two lakh government jobs would be filled in the first year of formation of the Congress Government, the party declared, even as it promised that unemployed youth would be given a Rs 4,000 payment per month until they get a job.
A Youth Commission would be set up and Rs 10 lakh interest-free loan would be provided to increase livelihood opportunities, the Congress said.
The party also promised that after forming the government, it would reimburse all fees to students and also backlog if any would be cleared. Quality education would be provided to the children of Police and Road Transport Corporation (RTC) personnel by setting up two universities for them in Hyderabad and Warangal.
Last year, the party had released the ‘Warangal Declaration’, announcing various doles to farmers as well.
The Congress has suffered setbacks in Telangana despite the UPA government headed by Manmohan Singh acceding to the statehood demand in 2014.

In addition to losing the Legislative Assembly elections in 2014 and 2018, the Congress also fared badly in the Assembly bypolls and the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) election hels in the past few years.
Apart from this, the party has yielded ground to the BJP which has won two Assembly bypolls and the GHMC election impressively.
Aiming to resurrect its prospects in the state, the Congress has been reaching out to people in various ways.
While state party chief Revanth Reddy held a ‘padayatra’ after the conclusion of national leader Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’, Congress Legislature Party leader Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka too has been on a ‘padayatra’ for the past 50 days.

Congress govt in Himachal misused official machinery to win Shimla civic polls, says BJP

Shimla: The BJP on Monday alleged that the Congress government in Himachal Pradesh misused the official machinery to win the elections to the Shimla Municipal Corporation.
Sukhram Chaudhary, the party’s Shimla Municipal Corporation election in-charge, said the votes of thousands of people from outside Shimla were registered to influence the polls.
The Congress won 24 of the 34 wards in last week’s Shimla Municipal Corporation election. The BJP won nine wards and the CPI(M) one while the AAP, which had contested from 21 seats, drew a blank.

During a review meeting on Monday, the BJP’s Himachal Pradesh unit chief Rajiv Bindal said the Congress indulged in malpractices to influence the elections from day one.
The roster was fiddled with and over 20,000 new voters were registered, he claimed.
Bindal added that the announcement of jobs regularisation and three per cent dearness allowance were attempts to woo the government employees, who constitute a major chunk of voters in the civic polls.
Expressing his gratitude to the party workers for the efforts they put into the election campaign, the BJP state unit chief exhorted leaders to gear up for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
The BJP’s nine winning candidates were also present at the meeting.

Former chief minister Jai Ram Thakur called on the party workers to strengthen the polling booths ahead of the parliamentary elections.

Congress files complaint against Karnataka BJP candidate for ‘threat to kill Kharge’

Panaji: The Congress in Goa on Monday filed a complaint against BJP candidate Manikanta Rathod from Karnataka for the alleged plot to assassinate Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and his family.
Goa Pradesh Congress Committee president Amit Patkar along with other office bearers filed the complaint at the Panaji police station.
Patkar speaking to reporters, alleged that a conspiracy to kill Kharge and his family was hatched by the BJP candidate from Chittapur seat Manikanta Rathod, who was heard purportedly saying so in Kannada in an audio clip.

“The BJP leader has clearly said in the audio tape that he will kill Mallikarjun Kharge and his family. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, and Election Commission are mum on this issue. We have filed a complaint and have demanded to register a FIR and probe the case,” Patkar said.
Stating that the government has failed to take action against Rathod, Patkar questioned whether “we are in a democracy”.
“This is an open threat to our leader. There are several cases against Rathod. Such a person has been given a ticket by the BJP and despite his threat to our leader, no action has been taken against him,” Patkar said.
“The murder plot is very clear from the audio recording of BJP candidate from Chittapur, Shri Manikanta Rathod, who also happens to be the ‘Blue Eyed Boy’ of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and Chief Minister of Karnataka Shri Basavaraj Bommai,” the complaint stated.
“There is a designed hatred, towards the tall leader of the country Shri Mallikarjun Kharge, on part of the BJP leadership, and that the BJP is unable to digest the fact, that having been born in a Dalit family to a factory labourer, Shri Mallikarjun Kharge has risen from the post of block Congress president to be the president of the Indian National Congress,” it said.

“The BJP leaders are openly plotting the assassination of Mallikarjun Kharge, his wife and the entire family, and that, the frustration and desperation of the BJP and its leadership has now reached dangerous proportions,” the complaint stated.

Congress slams Manipur CM over violence

New Delhi: The Congress on Sunday hit out at Chief Minister N Biren Singh over the situation in Manipur, saying he cannot absolve himself and “his patrons in New Delhi and Nagpur” of the responsibility for the horrific violence and killings in the state.
The Congress’ attack came a day after Singh, who heads a BJP-led government in Manipur, chaired an all-party meeting over the prevailing situation in the violence-hit state.
In a tweet, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said, “The CM of Manipur finally condescended to meet with all political parties and some civil society groups. But he cannot absolve himself and his patrons in New Delhi and Nagpur of the responsibility for the horrific violence and killings in the state.”

The Congress has been warning of the consequences of what the RSS/BJP has been doing in the northeast, he said.
“But now is the time for a collective resolve to bring Manipur to peace and harmony,” Ramesh added.
Violent clashes broke out between tribals and people belonging to the majority Meitei community in Manipur on Wednesday, displacing thousands of people and killing at least 54.
The clashes broke out after a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organised in the 10 hill districts to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status.

No good options if Congress fails to raise the debt limit, Yellen says

Once that date hits, “really that’s it,” Yellen said on “This Week.” “We have been using extraordinary measures for several months now, and our ability to do that is running out.”
The debate over the debt limit has left Democrats and Republicans in a deadlock, and so far neither side seems ready to budge. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that Democrats are in “lockstep” with Biden, who has called for passing a clean debt ceiling, not tied to any of the spending cuts House Republicans proposed in the bill they passed last month.
Speaking on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures With Maria Bartiromo,” Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) said a letter had been sent to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer saying 43 Republicans backed House Republicans in saying they would not consent to passing a debt ceiling increase without “spending cuts and structural budget reform.” He said he expects Senate Republicans to stay united on the issue.
“As Kevin McCarthy, speaker of the House, meets with the White House, it’s imperative that he arrive in a position of negotiating power,” Lee said.
Should Congress fail to come to an agreement before the X date, some analysts have suggested that Biden could invoke the 14th Amendment, which confirms “the validity of the public debt,” to raise the ceiling unilaterally. Legal scholar Laurence H. Tribe wrote of that option in the New York Times on Sunday: “For a president to pick the lesser of two evils when no other option exists is the essence of constitutional leadership, not the action of a tyrant.”
But it’s an option Yellen doesn’t want to White House to have to consider.
“Look, all I want to say is that it’s Congress’s job to do this,” she said. “If they fail to do it, we will have an economic and financial catastrophe that will be of our own making and there is no action that President Biden and the U.S. Treasury can take to prevent that catastrophe.”
If Congress does fail to find common ground, “there are simply no good options,” Yellen said.

Congress advocating about ‘separating’ Karnataka from India, claims PM in his rally

Nanjanagudu: In a blistering attack on the Congress during his last campaign rally ahead of May 10 Assembly polls, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday accused the party of openly advocating for “separating” Karnataka from India.
The Prime Minister’s charge comes a day after former Congress chief Sonia Gandhi addressed a campaign rally at Hubballi on Saturday.
Referring to her speech in a tweet, the party said Gandhi, who is the Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson, “sends a strong message to 6.5 crore Kannadigas”. It also posted pictures of Gandhi speaking at the public meeting.

“The Congress will not allow anyone to pose a threat to Karnataka’s reputation, sovereignty or integrity”, the tweet read.
Modi, apparently referring to this, alleged that the disease of the ‘tukde-tukde gang’ (anti-national elements) has reached the Congress’ top level.
“When it comes to working against India’s interests, Congress’ royal family will be at the forefront. I want to speak about a serious issue here, I want to say it as there is a lot of pain in my heart. This country can never forgive such a game. This family, to influence the politics in the country, is encouraging foreign forces to interfere,” Modi said.
Addressing the public meeting here in Mysuru district, he accused them of secretly meeting foreign diplomats who hate India, repeatedly indulging in activities that insult India’s sovereignty and said they are not ashamed of it.
Stating that in this Karnataka election, Congress’s ‘shahi parivar’ (royal family) has gone a step ahead “breaking all the limits and crushing the feelings of the country”, Modi said “not only Karnataka, I want to tell this to entire country with lot of pain that in this election Congress’ shahi parivar yesterday came to Karnataka and said that they want to protect the sovereignty of Karnataka.”

“Karnataka’s sovereignty, you know what is the meaning of it? They have sat in Parliament for so many years, they have taken oath on India’s Constitution, and they say this. When a country becomes independent, then that country is called a sovereign nation. The meaning of what Congress is saying is the party believes that Karnataka is separate from India,” he charged.
Asking people whether they approve it and whether they will punish Congress for such a statement, the Prime Minister said it means Congress is openly advocating about seperating Karnataka from India.
“I had never thought that the disease of the tukde-tukde gang would reach the Congress’ top level,” he said, accusing the party of insulting Kannada fighters who fought for India’s independence and insulting the patriotism of crores of Kannadigas.
Noting that this is the land where ‘Rashtra Kavi’ Kuvempu had said Karnataka is integral part of India with lines in the state anthem – “Jaya Bharata Jananiya Tanujate Jaya he Karnataka Maate”, Modi said “for every Kannadiga, Karnataka is a mother and she has been described as the daughter of ‘Bharat ma’. I can feel the feelings of Kannadigas.”
Insulting the feelings of Karnataka is like insulting the “culture and pride” of the state, he added.
Further accusing Congress of creating rift between states and spreading communal fire, the Prime Minister said whenever they did such things, people of India united to defeat them.
Congress wants to somehow come to power in Karnataka to get “political oxygen”, he said, adding that “people here can never forgive them for this sin… Congress will get the response for this on May 10 with full strength.”
Stating that he was visiting the famous Srikanteshwara temple here, which is dedicated to Lord Shiva connected to the mythological context of ‘Vishapaan’ (Shiva drinking venom), after the rally, Modi said: “The way Congress abused me in Karnataka and poured venom on me, Lord Srikanteshwara gave me the strength to bear it.”
Thanking people for the blessings and affection towards him during campaigning in Karnataka, calling it his biggest asset, he said this is my last programme in this election campaign and after this he will leave for Delhi.
“I’m ending my campaign here, now you take the baton,” he said as he urged the people to vote on May 10 and exercise their franchise.
Modi later visited the Srikanteshwara temple in the district.

CPI(M) in Kerala rejects Congress’ claims of irregularities in AI camera project

Thiruvananthapuram: The CPI(M) in Kerala on Sunday rejected all the claims of the Congress party over alleged irregularities in the implementation of the AI camera system to deter traffic violators in the State under “Safe Kerala” project, and termed it as “baseless”.
CPI(M) state secretary, M V Govindan, in a press meet here, asked the Leader of Opposition (LoP), V D Satheesan and former LoP and senior Congress leader, Ramesh Chennithala to “reach an agreement” on the corruption amount they were alleging.
Govindan said the Congress was raising “such baseless” allegations to divert the attention of the public from the achievements of the Left government.

The senior Left leader said that the project was implemented to follow Section 136 A of the Motor Vehicles Act, that directs the State government to ensure electronic monitoring and enforcement of road safety.
“Satheesan is saying that there was corruption of Rs 100 crore. Chennithala claims that the corruption amount was Rs 132 crore. While the whole project for AI cameras was worth Rs 232 crore. They should get their numbers right. The Congress leaders should first reach an agreement on what to allege,” Govindan said.
He said the allegations raised by both the leaders were baseless.
“The total cost of the project comes around Rs 142 crore. There is a functioning expense of Rs 56.24 crore for five years. This includes a control room in all 14 districts, annual maintenance, staff, their salaries, internet and everything. Then there is a GST of Rs 35.76 crore and it all totals to Rs 232.25 crore. But the Congress leaders will not give you the whole numbers,” Govindan alleged.
The senior Left leader also claimed that the Congress was using the “BJP’s trick” to spread fake news.

“The Prime Minister, the Congress and the BJP are trying to weaken the Left government by creating fake news to tarnish the image of the State,” he said.
Govindan said the Left government was implementing a scientific method to reduce traffic violations and accidents.
“On the first day of its implementation, the AI cameras detected 4.5 lakh traffic violations. According to the Motor Vehicle Department, the violations have come down to 1.25 lakh now after people became aware of the presence of the cameras and fines being imposed,” Govindan claimed.
Meanwhile, the BJP asked the Chief Minister and the government to “answer” to the people over the corruption charges.
BJP state chief K Surendran said Govindan was ridiculing himself by justifying the Chief Minister over the allegations.
The Congress has been raising corruption charges against the “Safe Kerala” project, which aims to reduce road accidents and traffic violations in the State, since its inauguration in April.

MP: Bajrang Bali was tribal who protected Lord Ram, says Congress MLA

Seoni: A Congress MLA from Madhya Pradesh has claimed Bajrang Bali was a tribal forest dweller who protected Lord Ram.
The Congress legislator from Barghat constituency in Seoni district, Arjun Singh Kakodiya, also claimed there was no Ayodhya, Kshatriya or Brahmin sena (army) but it was the tribal community that helped Lord Ram (in his exile).
“Bajrang Bali was a tribal who lives in the forest. He protected Maryada Purushottam Shri Ram and helped him. There was no Ayodhya, Kshatriya or Brahmin sena but (it was) the tribal community (that) helped Lord Ram,” Kakodiya said while addressing a public meeting in the presence of MP Congress president Kamal Nath in Udepani village.

He said the tribal community will not tolerate the insult of Bajrang Bali and those who are defaming his name.
Bajrang Bali, also called Hanuman, is a divine monkey companion of Lord Ram. He is one of the central characters of the epic Ramayana.
The Congress is facing backlash from BJP and right-wing organisations for bracketing Bajrang Dal with the Popular Front of India (PFI) in its manifesto for the May 10 Karnataka Assembly polls.
In the manifesto released last week for the polls, the Congress said it was committed to taking firm and decisive action against individuals and organisations spreading hatred amongst communities on grounds of caste and religion.
The mention of Bajrang Dal has evoked a strong reaction with BJP and right-wing organisations accusing Congress of playing appeasement politics.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi chanted Jai Bajrang Bali’ during all three public meetings he addressed in poll-bound Karnataka on Wednesday.
“The Congress in its manifesto has decided to lock up Lord Hanuman. Initially, they locked up Prabhu Shri Ram (Lord Ram). And now they want to lock up people who say Jai Bajrang Bali’,” the PM told a public meeting at Hospet in Vijayanagara district on Tuesday.

Bengaluru: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday criticised the Congress in his last public rally in Karnataka ahead of assembly polls scheduled to be held on May 10, saying the grand old party has insulted Lingayats, OBCs and also Bajrangbali (Lord Hanuman).
Addressing a massive crowd in Nanjangud of Mysuru district, PM Modi said: “Do not believe in the bundle of lies by Congress. This is going to be my last speech in Karnataka before the Assembly elections. I thank all Kannada people from my heart for supporting me. All should participate in the festival of elections. Your vote will give new direction to the state and nation.”
PM Modi said that the BJP is striving for the welfare of all people.

“All people including those belonging to the Hakki-Pikki community have been brought back to India safely from Sudan. Congress has played politics in this crisis. Modi is there for you. We will take any required step to defend the country. We will not hesitate in taking any bold step,” PM Modi said.
He said that the Congress was insulting those who took part in the freedom struggle of India.
“Crores of Kannada people are insulted. ‘Rashtra Kavi’ Kuvempu described Karnataka as the daughter of India. But the Congress has adopted a divide and rule policy. I never thought the Congress would indulge in such cheap tactics to come to power,” he said.
He said that “India is in the second position in mobile production in the world”.
“Many big companies have come to Karnataka. Branded mobiles are produced in Karnataka. This is a matter of pride for the state. But for JD-S and Congress, it is not a matter of pride,” he said.

The Prime Minister further said that to create a history and to make the state (Karnataka) number one in the country, the state assembly elections are significant.
“People believe in double engine government. There is only one conviction in all corners of the state that this time, the majority BJP government will come to power,” PM Modi said.
