Act against trolls targeting CJI Chandrachud, demands Maha Congress

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: The Congress’ Maharashtra unit on Friday demanded that the government should take action against the “army of trolls” who have targeted Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud.

State Congress President Nana Patole said that there is no limit to the appetite of the “power-hungry” Bharatiya Janata Party and to what lengths they went from Maharashtra to Gujarat to Guwahati — and how the former Governor misused his position — to overthrow the Maha Vikas Aghadi government last year.

“Everyone knows who has set up the army of trolls… Based on certain observations of the CJI during the Supreme Court hearing pertaining to the Maharashtra power struggle, some people are apprehending that the decision could go against them. So they have started trolling even the CJI,” Patole said sharply.

He said that the Congress MPs have also approached the President seeking action in the matter of trolling of the CJI for the questions he and other judges asked or their observations during the hearings.

“This is a serious issue… The Congress MP have urged the President to take cognizance as nobody has faith in the BJP government at the Centre,” said Patole.

He said there are all kinds of rumours, wild speculation, restlessness, and anxiety indicating that the state government may collapse anytime.

“We have full faith in the judiciary and await the apex court’s verdict,” Patole said.

The Sharp-Witted Representative Who Opened the Doors of Congress to Young Moms

    [ad_1]

    ap870718027

What hard-fought success Schroeder got — “It took nine months to deliver each of my children and nine years to deliver FMLA,” she’d later say — came from “her humanity and her persistence and her humor,” says Ellen Bravo, the former director of 9to5, National Association of Working Women, one of many national groups that worked for the bill’s passage. Year after year, Schroeder leaned into the absurdity of Washington, deploying a brand of witty straight talk that drew attention to her causes, well before social media and viral memes.

“She was able to not just withstand obnoxious attacks on her, but to direct withering responses at the people” who went after her, Bravo says. “She handled them in a way that ate right through the veneer of authority.”

Schroeder was the one who declared that Ronald Reagan had a “Teflon-coated presidency” (an idea that reportedly came to her while frying eggs on a nonstick pan) and dubbed George H.W. Bush and Dan Quayle members of the “lucky sperm club” because they were able to run for office with the benefit of family wealth.

And she faced her own indignities with humor and theatrics. When she won a seat on the House Armed Services Committee early in her tenure, the chair, a Louisiana Democrat named F. Edward Hébert, was angry that she and Ron Dellums, a Black Democrat from California, had been placed on the committee against Hébert’s wishes. He provided only a single chair for the two of them, so Schroeder and Dellums squeezed into it together — “cheek-to-cheek,” she would later write — and sat that way for two years. “Barney Frank used to always say it’s the only half-assed thing I did when I was in Congress, but I’m not sure that’s true,” she quipped to the House historian years later.

Even as Schroeder grew in influence, eventually launching a short-lived bid for president in 1987, she faced doubts and digs about her demeanor: the time she wore a bunny suit to entertain kids in the U.S. Embassy during a 1987 Armed Services trip to China, the fact that she would sometimes sign her name with a smiley-face in the “P.” Some of the biggest scrutiny came when she dropped out of the presidential race and openly cried at the press conference, launching 1,000 think pieces about gender, politics and public norms.

But Schroeder had never feared wearing her motherhood or womanhood on her sleeve, down to bringing her children — and sometimes a pet bunny named Franklin Delano Rabbit — back and forth with her to Denver and on official international trips. “They’d usually spill at least two Cokes and a glass of milk on me before I got off [the ground],” she told the House historian years later. “I was always sticky … People would just be horrified, but that’s how we were.”

That unapologetic approach to parenthood is less rare today, in many public spheres. But there are still plenty of barriers to women with young children running for office, says Liuba Grechen Shirley, who ran for a New York congressional seat in 2018 with two toddlers at home and went on to form the group Vote Mama, which supports young mothers in politics.

And on the congressional level, at least, the family-friendly policies Schroeder championed at the height of her influence have largely been frozen in time. While the FMLA was game-changing 30 years ago, most of its advocates consider it woefully incomplete. As Grechen Shirley and Bravo point out, the law covers only 60 percent of workers, due to restrictions on eligibility. Many eligible people aren’t able to take advantage of it because they can’t afford to take the time off. (Bravo notes that state laws mandating paid sick leave are gaining momentum — they’ve been passed now in 11 states and the District of Columbia.)

Grechen Shirley attributes the lack of progress to a lack of representation. The 118th Congress has a record number of women and yet that’s still only 153 of 540 voting and nonvoting members, or 28 percent of the body. But it’s not just that there aren’t enough women in Congress, Grechen Shirley contends, echoing what Schroeder discovered 50 years ago. It’s that there aren’t enough mothers.

“It’s because our policies were not made by people who have the lived experience. If we want to change the system, we have to change the system-makers,” she says. “So many women will wait until their children are grown before they consider running, so it’s difficult to build that political power to get tenure, to get those leadership positions.”

Congress MPs demand summoning of SEBI chief on Adani-Hindenburg issue

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Congress MPs on Wednesday sought examining of SEBI and RBI chiefs, officials of the Ministry of Corporate Affairs and other regulatory bodies by a parliamentary panel on finance to ascertain whether there were any failures on their part on the Adani issue.

Manish Tewari of the Congress raised the demand during a meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance but BJP members opposed it saying the issue was sub-judice.

Tewari was supported by party colleagues Gaurav Gogoi and Pramod Tiwari, TMC MP Saugata Roy and BJD’s Pinaki Misra and Amar Patnaik during the meeting, sources said.

They added that BJP MPs Ravi Shankar Prasad, SS Ahluwalia and Sushil Kumar Modi strongly opposed the demand saying the issue is sub-judice as the Supreme Court is looking into the issue and has set up a committee in this regard.

The sources said Tewari stated that the chiefs of SEBI, RBI and other regulatory agencies were required to be examined to ascertain whether there was any regulatory failure on the Adani group share meltdown on Indian stock markets after the Hindenburg report came out.

Committee chairman Jayant Sinha asked the Congress members to give in writing their demand, the sources said, adding that the opposition members said this was part of the panel’s work to oversee the regulatory framework.

When contacted, Sinha said, “Some honourable members brought up a specific matter that is currently being evaluated through the SC expert committee it was agreed let the SC process be concluded.”

The issue was discussed for over an hour but remained inconclusive.

The Finance Committee met in Parliament complex to get a briefing by the representatives of Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation on the subject ‘Issues related to MPLAD Scheme’ and for consideration and adoption of draft reports on Demands for Grants (2023-24).

  • DOJ: Trump cannot save Navarro from contempt of Congress prosecution

DOJ: Trump cannot save Navarro from contempt of Congress prosecution

    [ad_1]

    capitol riot contempt 62124

The trial proceedings have renewed extraordinarily complex issues surrounding the immunity presidential advisers enjoy from being forced to testify to Congress, as well as the relatively untested puzzle of what courts should do when a current and former president disagree on assertions of executive privilege. While the Nixon-era Supreme Court has ruled that the incumbent president’s determination carries far more weight, courts have never drawn precise lines — and the issue has remained dormant until Trump’s post-presidential efforts to stymie investigations of his bid to overturn the election.

The issues were similarly prominent during the contempt of Congress trial for Trump ally Steve Bannon, also for defying the Jan. 6 committee. In that case, U.S. District Court Judge Carl Nichols largely rejected Bannon’s arguments that he believed he was immune from testifying to Congress. Bannon was convicted by a jury in July. He’s currently appealing the verdict.

Navarro, unlike Bannon, was a sitting presidential adviser at the time of Jan. 6, which has added additional complexities to his case

But DOJ said there’s no need for Mehta to resolve those thorny issues. Navarro, Aloi noted, hasn’t shown any evidence that Trump actually did assert privilege over his response to the committee’s subpoena. A Jan. 23 letter from Trump’s lawyer — a belated effort by Trump to suggest Navarro was correct to defy the select committee — failed to make the case, she said. That’s because the majority of the select committee’s questions for Navarro had little to do with his role as Trump’s trade adviser, or indeed with Trump at all.

“The committee informed the Defendant that most of the information it was seeking did not concern communications he took in his capacity as presidential adviser at all, but instead related to matters undertaken in his personal capacity with persons outside the government,” the department argued. “Executive privilege, in this case, therefore could not justify a complete default on the Committee’s subpoena.”

The select committee subpoenaed Navarro in early 2022, seeking information about his efforts to support Trump’s bid to subvert the outcome of the 2020 election. Navarro, whose primary official role at the time was responding to the Covid pandemic, spent weeks after the election compiling a report that leveled discredited claims of election fraud. Trump cited that report in the same tweet he urged supporters to come to Washington on Jan. 6 for a “wild” protest.

Navarro had also publicly described strategizing with Bannon and House Republican lawmakers on a strategy they dubbed the “Green Bay sweep,” a tactical plan for House and Senate Republicans to formally object to Joe Biden’s election during the certification of Electoral Votes on Jan. 6.

The select committee subpoenaed Navarro on Feb. 9, 2022, and Navarro responded almost immediately that he would not comply because of executive privilege. After weeks of failed discussions between the committee and Navarro, Biden’s White House counsel issued a letter indicating that Biden had determined not to support any claim of privilege over Navarro’s testimony. Navarro then blew off a March 2 deposition date. The House soon held Navarro in contempt and recommended that DOJ pursue criminal charges, which it did in June.

“At no time did the Defendant provide the Committee with any evidence supporting his assertion that the former President had invoked executive privilege over the information the Committee’s subpoena sought from the Defendant,” Aloi noted in her Tuesday night brief. “And at no time in his communications with the Select Committee did the Defendant raise the issue of testimonial immunity, nor even suggest that former President Trump had requested that he communicate any assertion of such immunity to the Committee.”

Mehta appeared to largely align with the Justice Department’s thinking on the matter until late January on the eve of trial, when he raised new questions about whether Navarro might fit within the realm of close presidential advisers who DOJ has long said are “immune” from compelled testimony to Congress. If so, he said, it’s possible DOJ would be barred from bringing contempt of Congress charges against Navarro.

But the department said its prior analyses about immunity — which all pertain to current and former advisers to a sitting president — aren’t applicable to Navarro, a former adviser to a former president.

Mehta is also contemplating whether questions about Trump’s claim of executive privilege should be resolved by the jury in Navarro’s forthcoming trial. But DOJ said this was a purely legal determination that should be resolved before trial begins.

“[W]hile a valid assertion of executive privilege may provide a bar to prosecution, a subpoenaed witness’s mistaken belief that executive privilege was asserted or excused compliance is not a defense at all,” Aloi wrote. “The Defendant should not be permitted to testify about contrary and mistaken beliefs before the jury.”

“Were a jury confronted with credible evidence both that there an invocation by the former President, and that there was not an invocation (and/or an express decision not to invoke) by the current President,” she continued, “there is no fact finding the jury could do that would resolve the conflict.”

  • Karnataka Congress gears up for Rahul’s mega rally on March 20

Karnataka Congress gears up for Rahul’s mega rally on March 20

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: To counter the blitzkrieg election campaign of the ruling BJP, the Congress is planning a mega rally on March 20 in Karnataka, which will be attended by Rahul Gandhi.

The Congress is making an all out preparation for the programme.

Rahul Gandhi will be visiting the state for the first time after the Bharat Jodo Yatra. The mega rally is being organised at Belagavi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had taken part in a 10.7 km roadshow in Belagavi and evoked a good response from the people.

The Belagavi district has the biggest landscape and 18 MLAs get elected from here. The political parties are focused on winning the maximum seats from the district.

The Congress suffered a setback in the last few years as one of its influential leaders, Ramesh Jarkiholi joined the BJP. However, the deaths of BJP MP Suresh Angadi and BJP MLA Umesh Katti have proved to be a setback for the party.

Presently, Satish Jarkiholi, brother of Ramesh Jarkiholi, KPCC Working President is leading the party in Belagavi and Congress MLAs Lakshmi Hebbalkar and Anjali Nimbalkar are emerging as important leaders from the region.

After the visit of Prime Minister Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the Congress is putting up the show by Rahul Gandhi to galvanise the party workers. The party is contemplating to announce a fourth major poll promise by Rahul Gandhi.

The party has already promised Rs 2,000 cash assistance for all women heads of the family in the state under the Gruhalakshmi scheme. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra made the announcement for the scheme during her rally in the capital city in January. The party has also assured free electricity supply of up to 200 units to every household under the Gruha Jyothi scheme.

Sources in the Congress stated that Rahul Gandhi will make an announcement on creating a specific number of jobs or allowances for unemployed youth in Karnataka.

Piyush Goyal links RRR’s Oscar win to PM Modi; Congress mocks

    [ad_1]

Leader of Opposition and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge while congratulating the Oscar winners – The Elephant Whisperers Netflix documentary and Naatu Naatu song from the Telugu-movie RRR – in Rajya Sabha on Monday in a lighter note ‘requested’ Central Government not to take the credit for the wins.

Speaking in the Rajya Sabha, Kharge said, “I also join to congratulate both the awardees – Naatu Naatu and Elephant Whisperers – both of them come from South India. It is a great pride for us. We are also very proud of whatever you have said, we are with you.”

“But my only request is that the ruling party should not take credit saying we have directed, we have written the poem, Modiji has directed the film. That is my only request. It is a contribution of the country,” Kharge said.

His sarcastic remarks were met with roaring laughter from the House, including BJP leaders like Food Minister Piyush Goyal who had earlier drawn a parallel between the Academy Awards and PM Modi’s choice for the Rajya Sabha nominations. Piyush said that the PM’s chose “outstanding personalities” for Rajya Sabha with his “stamp of quality” in the nominations.

In a Facebook post titled “Rajya Sabha Nominations – An Oscar for Prime Minister’s Office”, Goyal listed the names of the nominees for the Rajya Sabha.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji has left his stamp of quality in nominating members to the Rajya Sabha by choosing outstanding personalities who have made a mark in diverse fields such as Indian culture, social work and sports,” the minister wrote.

“Shri V. Vijayendra Prasad, the scriptwriter of the film RRR, is one of the several exceptional people whom the Prime Minister nominated to the Rajya Sabha in July 2022. The scriptwriter from Andhra Pradesh has been associated with the creative world for decades. Last year, Prime Minister Modi ji recognised his greatness and said “his works showcase India’s glorious culture and have made a mark globally.” Today, the global spotlight is on ‘RRR’ for winning an Oscar for the original song ‘Naatu Naatu’. This is a global endorsement of the Prime Minister’s choice,” he elaborated.

  • MP assembly: Congress MLAs stage walkout against BBC censure motion

MP assembly: Congress MLAs stage walkout against BBC censure motion

    [ad_1]

Bhopal: Congress MLAs on Tuesday walked out opposing a censure motion that the Madhya Pradesh assembly passed against the BBC for allegedly showing Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a bad light in its documentary on the 2002 Gujarat riots.

The House on Monday passed the censure motion against the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) after it was introduced as a private member resolution. It came days after the Gujarat assembly passed a resolution requesting the Centre to take strict action against BBC for “tarnishing the image and popularity of PM Modi”.

As the house convened on Tuesday, Leader of Opposition Dr Govind Singh quoted news articles saying it was reported that the censure motion was approved “unanimously” by the House, though the Congress had not supported it.

It is incorrect to say that the motion was approved unanimously as it was brought during “Zero Hour’ without prior notice, Singh said. Also, the motion was not brought before the House business committee for discussion, which he said was against democratic norms.

The Opposition leader said that the Congress legislature party was opposing this censure motion.

Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Narottam Mishra, however, countered the charge saying most of the Congress MLAs, except for the party’s state chief Kamal Nath, were present when the motion against BBC was passed in the House. But the leader of opposition didn’t speak then, he said.

Dr Singh claimed that he had opposed the censure motion at the time but it was not recorded. Some Congress MLAs, including Sajjan Singh Verma, also started speaking about the resolution related to the BBC documentary.

With several members speaking together, the leader of the opposition announced that the Congress legislature party was staging a walkout against the motion.

As the Congress members walked out, Speaker Girish Gautam clarified that the censure motion against BBC was passed with a voice vote and not “unanimously”.

On Monday, the motion against the UK broadcaster was introduced as a private member resolution moved by ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Shailendra Jain and seconded by minister Narottam Mishra.

Before the motion was passed by voice vote, MLA Jain said the BBC had telecast an objectionable documentary by misinterpreting the 2002 Gujarat riots and portrayed then chief minister Narendra Modi in a bad light.

He said the documentary had also cast aspersions on the country’s judiciary which amounts to contempt of court and added that the judiciary works independently and freely in India.

Jain said the Central government should take action against the broadcaster.

The speaker placed the resolution to test which was passed by a voice vote.

The Gujarat assembly had on Friday passed a resolution requesting the Centre to take strict action against BBC for “tarnishing the image and popularity of PM Modi with the documentary”.

A censure motion is an expression of strong disapproval. In Parliamentary procedure, it is a debatable main motion that could be adopted by a majority vote.

The MP assembly has 230 members 96 from the Congress and 127 from BJP besides four independents, two of BSP and one SP.

Biden bypasses Congress as he tries to tamp down gun violence

    [ad_1]

Biden’s latest gun policy rollout, which he announced at the Boys & Girls Club of West San Gabriel Valley, comes amid a deadly year. Almost four months into 2023, there have been 109 mass shootings in which four or more people were injured or killed, according to the Gun Violence Archive. As the violence continues even after the passage of the first gun legislation in 30 years, major gun safety groups have pleaded with Biden to act alone as Congress appears unlikely to reach further compromise on the issue.

“These are not controversial solutions anywhere except for in Washington, D.C., in Congress,” a senior administration official said Monday night, briefing reporters ahead of Biden’s speech. “The majority of kitchen tables across the country — they support universal background checks. And the action the president is proposing — to move closer to universal background checks — is just common sense.”

The president’s executive order also called for his administration to speed up the implementation of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act. Within 60 days, every agency involved in the legislation’s rollout will be required to send Biden a report outlining progress and additional steps needed to push the law forward.

The executive order also directed members of Biden’s Cabinet to focus on raising public awareness of red flag laws and safe storage of guns and to address the loss and theft of firearms, the official said. The president also took additional steps aimed at holding gun manufacturers accountable, including by encouraging the Federal Trade Commission to analyze and report how gun manufacturers market firearms to minors.

Just as the Federal Emergency Management Agency responds during a hurricane, Biden asked members of his Cabinet to coordinate a response plan to address short and long-term needs in communities struck by mass shootings.

“He is directing key members of his Cabinet to develop a proposal for how we can structure the government to do a better job supporting those impacted by gun violence,” the administration official told reporters.

Biden also used Tuesday’s address to re-up his calls for Congress to take further action on guns, including his futile push for an assault weapons ban.

Finish Modi and country will be saved, says Congress’ Rajasthan in-charge

    [ad_1]

Jaipur: Launching a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress’ Rajasthan in-charge Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa on Monday levelled allegations against PM Modi, questioning the Pulwama incident. He said that if Modi is finished the country will be saved, however, if Modi stays then the country will be ruined.

Randhawa said, “Our fight is not with Adani, but with the BJP. Kill BJP and Adani-Ambani will die automatically. When the Congress comes, Adani-Ambani should not come. They should go to jail. Many of our leaders did not take them along. This has to be taken care of.”

He added, “I tell all leaders to end their fighting and talk about ending Modi-BJP. If Modi is finished then the country will be saved. If Modi stays then the country will be ruined. Modi talks about patriotism. They don’t even know what patriotism is.”

Randhawa questioned the Pulwama incident and said that Modi says “Pakistan mein ghuskar marenge”. First of all, tell me, how did Pulwama happen? Get it checked. Wasn’t it done keeping in mind the elections.”

He stated “All those who went to jail during the freedom struggle were from Congress families. Five generations of Congress families have gone to jail for the country. There is blood of every Congressman in Andaman’s Cellular Jail. Modi says what has the Congress done. The Congress has given freedom to the country, it has given the country to a dishonest person like you,” he commented.

Randhawa was speaking at the Raj Bhavan gherao programme organised by the Congress under the leadership of Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee president Govind Singh Dotasara on Monday in protest against the crony capitalism policy of the BJP central government in favour of Adani.

Randhawa said, “When the British came, they had brought the East India Company to do business. Modiji has brought a man like Adani by making him like the East India Company which looted the country for 200 years and took it over. The country is moving towards slavery again. Not Modi but Adani is deciding what will happen in the country,” he said.

He added, “First take out Modi, if Modi goes out then Adani will automatically end. First kill BJP, Adani will end automatically. Narendra Modi is destroying the country and selling the country.”

He lashed out at factionalism and selfish leaders in the Congress and said, “We have to work for the Congress, not for any individual.”

Govt demands apology from Rahul over remarks in UK; Congress objects

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Leader of the House in Rajya Sabha Piyush Goyal on Monday demanded an apology from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on his statement in the UK.

Goyal said that his statement has brought disrepute to the country and Rahul Gandhi should apologise.

He said, “A prominent Opposition leader goes abroad and attacks Indian democracy. He has levelled allegations against the press, judiciary and institutions. He has insulted the people of India and the Parliament. There is freedom of speech in India and MPs can speak in Parliament. Rahul Gandhi should apologise in Parliament.”

The opposition, especially the Congress, objected to it and raised slogans. Leader of the opposition Mallikarjun Kharge condemned the statement of Goyal amid sloganeering from treasury benches. The House was adjourned till 2 p.m.

Kharge said Rahul is not a member of this House and Prime Minister himself has insulted the country in China.

Addressing the MBA students at the Cambridge Judge Business School on the topic of ‘Learning to Listen in the 21st Century’, Rahul Gandhi said that the opposition parties are under ‘constant pressure’ as numerous cases have been slapped on them by the BJP government.

“Indian democracy is under attack. The institutional framework which is required for a democracy — Parliament, free press, the judiciary, just the idea of mobilisation — are all getting constrained. We are facing an attack on the basic structure of democracy,” Rahul Gandhi said.
