Cong, BRS, AAP move suspension of business notice in RS on Hindenburg-Adani row

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Members of Congress, Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS) and AAP on Tuesday moved suspension of business notice in the Rajya Sabha under rule 267 demanding a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe into the Hindenburg-Adani row.

Congress Deputy leader in the House Pramod Tiwari, AAP MP Sanjay Singh, and BRS MP K. Keshav Rao moved suspension notice on the issue.

On Monday, the Congress alleged that the government did not want Parliament to function.

“Parliament was adjourned for the day because the Government simply didn’t want it to function. It created a completely bogus diversion to keep the attention away from the combined Opposition demand for a JPC into the PM-linked Adani Maha Mega Scam,” Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh had said.

Earlier in the day, the Opposition members had staged a march towards Vijay Chowk and Congress president and Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge said that there is no rule of law under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

  • On Bhiwani killings, Owaisi says Cong govt failed Muslims miserably in Raj

On Bhiwani killings, Owaisi says Cong govt failed Muslims miserably in Raj

    [ad_1]

Jodhpur: AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Saturday urged Muslims to participate in politics to get justice and to evolve from being “vote givers” to “vote givers.”

Owaisi, who was in Jodhpur for a day, has been exploring possibilities for his party in Rajasthan, which is up for elections at the year end.

“Muslims only give votes and do not take votes like many other communities such as Jat, Rajputs, Gujars etc. These communities have not only given votes but taken votes too and have solved many of their problems unlike Muslims,” said Owaisi.

He said Muslims need to learn from these communities and build their leadership.

“Democracy is not just about casting your vote. You also need to participate in it. Only then you will be able to do something for yourself,” he said.

“We want to offer Rajasthan a political alternative, where BJP and Congress are engaged in a musical chair game,” he said.

Owaisi said Congress government in the state has disappointed Muslims miserably, and referred to the murder of Junaid and Naseer in Haryana by cow vigilantes.

“Why did Ashok Gehlot and other Muslim legislators of Rajasthan not visit the families of victims when they could have done it instantly. It took Gehlot a long time to visit them and that too after we criticised them,” he said.

Owaisi also criticised the BJP-led Haryana government over its handling of the Junaid and Naseer murder case and called one of the prime accused in the case, Monu Manesar, a “Darling of RSS.”

“Monu and all other accused are RSS-backed. Monu is the darling of RSS so there is no question of action against him. How can the BJP government of Haryana take action against him,” he said.

Owaisi alleged that Monu and his gang, with the patronage of RSS, are doing extortion, murders, terrorism, and firing in the name of gau-raksha.

“They are a militia. Criminals are being promoted. I would not be surprised if Monu is given a ticket by the BJP in the next election,” he said.

The Hyderabad-based leader also accused the BJP of trying to appease Muslims only to impress the Arab world.

“Had it not been so, it would have given the Pasmanda Muslims a status of Dalit. They have to just amend a 1950 presidential order,” he said.

Owaisi called Congress leaders arrogant, self-obsessed, and removed from reality.

“Congress is losing due to internal fights, ideological compromise. It has no strength and vision left. The party is altogether engaged in politics of opportunities and convenience,” he said.

BJP aping Cong in misusing probe agencies, will meet Cong’s fate: Akhilesh

    [ad_1]

Ahmedabad: Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Saturday said the Bharatiya Janata Party is following in the footsteps of the Congress in using probe agencies to carry out “political raids,” and will meet the same fate as the Congress.

He was replying to a reporter’s question about the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) questioning Rashtriya Janata Dal supremo Lalu Prasad and his wife Rabri Devi and issuing summons to Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav.

Central probe agencies like the CBI, ED and Income Tax were working at the BJP government’s behest, the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister told reporters.

The Congress, when it was in power, used the ED, CBI and I-T department to conduct raids on several political leaders in the country, he said.

“The BJP is doing nothing new by following the same path. If Congress has been today razed to the ground, the BJP will meet the same fate,” Yadav further said.

The SP leader was here to attend a function in the family of former Gujarat chief minister Shankersinh Vaghela.

The Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh was “not on the path of truth, and bulldozer has replaced the path of non-violence,” Yadav said to another question.

  • Left, Cong leaders to raise Tripura post-poll violence in Parliament

Left, Cong leaders to raise Tripura post-poll violence in Parliament

    [ad_1]

Agartala: Taking a serious note of the clashes and violence in the aftermath of the elections in BJP-ruled Tripura, a Left-Congress delegation on Saturday said it will raise the issue in Parliament to bring the matter to the knowledge of all countrymen.

Members of the delegation, who had come under an attack of miscreants in Nehalchandranagar on Friday, during its tour of violence-hit areas, also said that senior leaders of the Left and the Congress will meet President Droupadi Murmu to apprise her of the “terror tactics unleashed by the BJP and RSS” in states ruled by the saffron camp.

Three people have so far been arrested in connection with Friday’s incident in Nehalchandranagar area of Sepahijala district.

Addressing a press conference, CPI(M) Rajya Sabha MP Elmaram Kareem claimed that the “BJP-RSS- backed goons have not just mounted attacks on the people of the state but also destroyed means of their livelihood”, as many of them were forced to flee homes.

“The police are not taking action against the troublemakers, allowing them to roam about free for more vandalism in the northeastern state. It appears that law and order has completely collapsed in Tripura and the government has miserably failed to maintain peace,” he told reporters here.

Kareem, who arrived here along with seven MPs and senior leaders to take stock of the situation in Tripura, said that “the fact-finding delegation had called on Governor Satyadeo Narain Arya and briefed him about the prevailing condition” in the state, where elections were held on February 16 and the result declared on March 2.

The governor gave the delegation assurance that he would look into the matter and do the needful, the CPI(M) leader stated.
“We will raise this issue of post-election violence in the both houses of Parliament to draw the attention of the country. People outside the state are not aware about the very serious situation here,” he added.

All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary Ajay Kumar, who was also present at the press meet, claimed that the BJP has installed “Talibani raj” in Tripura.

Expressing concern over the attack on the MP delegation, Kumar said that the state had long been witnessing incidents of violence but “no measure has been taken to restore peace and order”.

“Neither the prime minister nor the home minister has made any statement on the attack on MP delegation in Tripura. It is an insult to Parliament,” he said.

CPI(M) state secretary Jitendra Chaudhury said over 1,000 incidents of post-poll violence have been reported in the state

“Youth bearing affiliation to opposition camps had to leave homes and run for their lives in the wake of the unabated attacks. We want the government to be sympathetic towards those affected in the midst of post-poll violence,” he said.

Tripura Congress president Birajit Sinha claimed that a “civil war-like situation” may arise in the state, if nothing was done immediately to stop the miscreants.

Among others, CPI(M) Rajya Sabha MP Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharjee was present at the meet.

Meanwhile, BJP spokesperson Nabendu Bhattacharjee alleged that a “deep-rooted conspiracy” was behind the attack on the delegation.

“The Left and the Congress are simply trying to defame the BJP at the national stage. Chief Minister Manik Saha, who is in Delhi, has already spoken to the DGP and instructed him to take stern legal action on those involved in the attack. Senior party leaders have also discussed the matter with local functionaries,” said Bhattcharjee.

The BJP-IPFT government recently returned to power in the state for the second consecutive term, with the saffron party bagging 32 seats in the 60-member assembly and the regional outfit securing one constituency.

Farmers’ protest foiled handover of India’s foodgrain logistics to Adani Group: Cong

    [ad_1]

New Delhi; Congress on Thursday alleged that farm laws, which were withdrawn by the Centre in 2021, were brought in to give benefits to the Adani group.

Jairam Ramesh, Congress General Secretary, who has started a series of questions, said “It’s related to the hard work the government has put into handing over India’s foodgrain logistics to the Adani Group, a conspiracy that it seems was only temporarily foiled by the farmer agitation of 2020-21 that forced you to withdraw the black farm laws.”

He said, “one of the biggest beneficiaries of the farm laws would have been Adani Agri Logistics which has become the major beneficiary of the Food Corporation of India’s silo contracts, the most recent award being one to set up 3.5 lakh metric tonnes of storage in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.”

He alleged that Adani Farm-Pik was allowed to build a near-monopoly on apple procurement in Himachal Pradesh.

“Is India’s public sector, painstakingly built over the past 70 years, now reduced to being a vehicle for the enrichment of your corporate friends,” he asked.

He said the Supreme Court observed that the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution had supported the Central warehousing corporation stand while the Ministry of Commerce and Industry had aided Adani’s bid to take control of two major CWC warehouses near Mundra port by not supporting the denotification of the warehouses as part of the Adani SEZ.

“The entire country knows that the motivation behind your ill-conceived farm laws was to hand over India’s agricultural logistics to a few of your close corporate cronies,” Ramesh added.

After Rahul Gandhi criticises Jaishankar, Cong demands EAM’s sacking

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Congress on Monday demanded the sacking of External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, accusing him of making “blasphemous” comments on the China issue.

The opposition party’s attack came a day after Rahul Gandhi hit out at Jaishankar, saying the minister does not understand the China threat.

“If you notice the statement of the Foreign Minister, he said China is much more powerful than us. To think China is more powerful than us, how can I pick a fight with them? At the heart of the ideology is cowardice,” Gandhi said in his interaction with the Indian diaspora.

Asked about Gandhi’s criticism of Jaishankar, Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate said, “If S Jaishankar understood the threat about China, he would not tell Chinese that ‘we are a smaller economy and you are a larger economy and how do we go and attack them’. Is that not what he said in his interview?”

“S Jaishankar should actually resign from his position. If he has an iota of morality in him, he should resign.

“If there was an iota of morality or moral compass alive in the Modi government, he should be sacked for making a blasphemous statement like that, because in one single stroke, he has actually demeaned our forces, he has put everyone to shame,” Shrinate said.

In a scathing attack on Jaishankar at the Congress’ plenary session in Raipur last month, Gandhi had also said that his recent remarks on China did not show nationalism but cowardice and that these were in line with V D Savarkar’s ideology of “bowing before the strong”.

  • ‘Shoddy’ probe by UP police reason for acquittals in Hathras case: Cong

‘Shoddy’ probe by UP police reason for acquittals in Hathras case: Cong

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Congress on Sunday attacked the BJP over the acquittal of three persons accused in the Hathras rape-murder case and alleged that it has exposed the “weak and shoddy” investigation done by the Uttar Pradesh Police and later by the CBI.

A special court in Hathras on Thursday last sentenced the main accused in the 2020 Hathras rape-murder case to life imprisonment, while acquitting the three other accused.

Addressing a press conference at the AICC headquarters here, Congress leader Dolly Sharma said the heinous crime in Hathras and then the government’s role in this matter has exposed the BJP’s “Beti Bachao” slogan.

“The crime of depriving the minor girl of the Dalit community of justice has been committed by the BJP, which keeps on giving the slogan of supporting everyone,” she said.

The court finding one accused guilty and acquitting the other three has again “exposed the weak and shoddy investigation” done by the Uttar Pradesh Police and later by the CBI in this case, Sharma said.

“In this matter, voice was continuously raised by the Congress party and our leader Rahul Gandhi and the general secretary in-charge of Uttar Pradesh, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, constantly demanded justice for the victim’s family,” she said.

The most unfortunate thing is that the minor daughter of a Dalit family was brutally gang-raped and murdered and only because of the “shoddy” investigation by the police, the prosecution could not even prove the charge of rape in the court, Sharma said.

The rape and murder charges could not be proved against the prime accused. The court held Sandeep (20) guilty under section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Indian Penal Code, a lesser charge than section 302 (murder).

Ravi (35), Luv Kush (23) and Ramu (26) were acquitted in the case that triggered outrage and put Yogi Adityanath’s BJP government in the dock over law and order in the state.

The court also slapped a fine of Rs 50,000 against Sandeep.

Sharma alleged that as soon as the matter came to light, the government machinery was busy giving it the form of a “conspiracy” to save the accused and suppress the matter.

“The acquittal of three out of four accused once again proves our allegation that the police and the administration acted with serious negligence in the initial investigation, witnesses and evidence was tampered with, pressure was created in every way and a weak prosecution was presented before the Court which benefited the accused and denied justice to the victim,” she alleged.

Sharma also cited other cases in which BJP leaders were allegedly involved in atrocities against women such as the Unnao rape case in 2017, Ankita Bhandari case in Uttarakhand and the release of the convicts in the Bilkis Bano case under the BJP government in Gujarat.

“It is noteworthy that in spite of all these barbaric incidents that took place in the last nine years, Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi did not say a word. What does this silence represent?” she said.

Arrested for remarks against Mamata, Cong leader Koustav Bagchi gets bail

    [ad_1]

Kolkata: Calcutta High Court counsel and Congress leader Koustav Bagchi, who was arrested by Kolkata Police on Saturday morning for allegedly making derogatory remarks against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, was granted bail by a lower court on the same day.

Senior advocate of Calcutta High Court and CPI(M) Rajya Sabha member Bikas Ranjan Bhattacharya, who appeared as Bagchi’s counsel, made a strong argument on behalf of his client.

“Is my client a terrorist? Who gave the right to the police to barge into his residence in the wee hours at around 3 a.m.? There is directive even from the Supreme Court barring police from barging into anyone’s residence in the wee hours or late in the night. The arrest was made without serving any notice under Section 41A of CrPC. This is an infringement on the fundamental rights of a person,” Bhattacharya argued.

He also said that the investigating officer in the case should be slapped with a show-cause notice for issuing the notice under Ssection 41A.

“We as legal practitioners are highly terrified. How can the police barge into the residence of a lawyer during the wee hours in a democratic country? Was that residence owned by a terrorist,” Bhattacharya questioned.

In his counter-argument, the public prosecutor said that some comments by Bagchi could trigger violence, which need to be investigated.

After hearing both sides, the court granted bail to Bagchi against a personal bond of Rs 1,000.

After the results of the bypoll to the Sagardighi Assembly constituency in Murshidabad district was announced on Thursday, in which Left-backed Congress candidate Baryon Biswas trounced Trinamool Congress nominee Debasish Bandopadhyay by 23,000 votes, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had launched a scathing attack against state Congress President Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, referring to his daughter’s suicide in 2006.

On Friday, Bagchi held a press conference where he referred to a book written by former IAS officer Deepak Kumar Ghosh, which reportedly has some references about the personal life of the Chief Minister.

Bagchi said that since Banerjee has started making personal attacks by referring to the suicide of Chowdhury’s daughter, he would now counter them by circulating soft copies of Ghosh’s book through WhatsApp.

The arrest evoked strong criticism from all corners, including from within the Trinamool Congress.
