UP: Local Cong leader taken into police custody for placing tricolour on Atiq’s grave

    [ad_1]

Prayagraj: Local Congress leader Rajkumar Singh Rajju was taken into custody by the police on Wednesday after he allegedly placed the tricolour on the grave of gangster-politician Atiq Ahmad, calling him a “martyr”.

The Congress expelled Rajju, who was a candidate in the upcoming urban local body polls, from the party for six years, its city president Pradeep Mishra Anshuman said.

Anshuman said that Rajju was a Congress candidate for corporator from Azad Nagar in South Malaka.

    MS Education Academy

A purported video of the incident went viral in which Rajju can be seen placing the tricolour on the Ahmad’s grave and raising slogans in favour of Ahmad and his brother Ashraf and demanding Bharat Ratna for the former MP.

“He was a people’s representative and a martyr. Why he was not given state honour and why the tricolour was not put on his grave,” Rajju said, according to the purported video.

Anshuman claimed to have a photo of Rajju receiving the award from state’s Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya and said whatever happened was a conspiracy.

Rajju is undergoing treatment for some psychiatric issues, he said, adding a prescription for psychiatric medicines were found at his home.

Dhoomanganj police station SHO Rajesh Kumar Maurya said Rajju has been detained and an FIR is being registered against him.

Ahmad (60) and Ashraf were shot dead at point-blank range by three men posing as journalists on Saturday night while police personnel were escorting the two brothers to a hospital in Prayagraj for a check-up.

Cong slams govt over Antigua and Barbuda court’s Choksi ruling

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Congress on Sunday attacked the Centre after a court in Antigua and Barbuda reportedly ordered that fugitive diamantaire Mehul Choksi cannot be removed from the Caribbean country, alleging that this happened due to the government’s “negligence”.

The opposition party also alleged that “repeated negligence” shows that this is being done “intentionally”.

According to media reports, a court in Antigua and Barbuda has ruled in favour of Choksi, wanted in a Rs 13,000-crore scam in the Punjab National Bank, ordering that he cannot be removed from that country.

In a tweet in Hindi, Congress general secretary, communications, Jairam Ramesh said, “Modi ji’s ‘Mehul Bhai’ has been enjoying abroad for many years with the money looted from our banks. Earlier his red corner notice was cancelled, now this decision of the court has come.”

“All this has happened because of the negligence of the Modi government. It is clear from the repeated negligence that this is being done intentionally,” Ramesh alleged.

The name of fugitive businessman Choksi was removed from the Interpol database of Red Notices on the basis of his plea to the Lyon-headquartered agency.

Red Notice is the highest level of alert by the 195-member strong International Police cooperation organisation Interpol to locate and provisionally arrest a fugitive pending extradition, surrender, or similar legal action.

  • Cong will win Karnataka; BJP’s south gateway will be closed: Moily

Cong will win Karnataka; BJP’s south gateway will be closed: Moily

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Asserting that “winds of change” are blowing in Karnataka, senior Congress leader M Veerappa Moily on Sunday claimed that his party will win at least 130 seats in the upcoming assembly polls and the gateway to South India for the BJP will be “totally closed”.

He also asserted that Karnataka has always played a crucial role in the formation of the government at the Centre and a victory in the upcoming assembly polls there will pave the way for the formation of a Congress-led government in 2024.

In an interview with PTI, former Karnataka chief minister Moily predicted that the Congress would not get any less than 130 seats in the 224-member assembly while the BJP would not cross the 60-mark in the May 10 assembly polls.

    MS Education Academy

He also accused the Janata Dal (Secular) of colluding with the BJP and said that the people will reject the H D Deve Gowda-led outfit’s “politics of opportunism”.

“The winds of change are blowing in favour of the Congress. The BJP is totally in tatters. There is no unity and solidarity in the rank and file of the BJP and many of them are quitting after being denied tickets and seeking shelter under the Congress or some other party,” Moily said.

Alleging a total failure of governance under the Basavaraj Bommai government of Karnataka, the former Union minister claimed “corruption is rampant” in the state with the BJP dispensation “classified as a 40 per cent commission” one.

The BJP talked about a double engine government but could not get a single project cleared, he claimed.

“Not even a single big industry has come up (under BJP rule), no jobs have been created and many of the vacancies are still pending including that of teachers. Corruption is the talk of every street in Karnataka,” Moily alleged.

He said that even after the judgment in a tribunal giving Karnataka more share of water from the Krishna river, the BJP government has not issued a notification as a result of which the state has been denied its legitimate share of water.

Asked about the BJP banking on the ‘Modi factor’ and how the Congress would overcome a campaign blitz by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Moily said, “I don’t think in Karnataka that will happen. They tried it in Tamil Nadu but could not succeed. They came with the same factor and Amit Shah and Modi ran a high voltage campaign in Kerala but could not succeed. It also did not click in Himachal Pradesh and West Bengal.”

“With the Karnataka elections, the gateway to South India for the BJP will be totally closed,” he asserted.

Asked about the reported infighting in the Congress and both former CM Siddaramaiah and Karnataka Congress chief D K Shivakumar vying for chief ministership, Moily said the BJP has been talking about this but there is no substance in such talk.

“They (Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar) are going together for campaigning, there is no evidence of any fight between them,” he said.

Moily said both Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar are claimants to the post of CM but it is for the newly-elected MLAs to decide before the AICC observers as to who would get the top job in the state.

While ruling himself out as being an aspirant of the CM post, Moily asserted that he was working to ensure that a Congress government is formed.

Moily, who is a member of the party’s central election committee, also rejected suggestions that there were major disagreements over ticket distribution.

“By and large there was no problem apart from one or two cases,” he said.

His remarks come amid reports that Siddaramaiah and Shivkumar drew a hard bargain for their respective supporters to get tickets and also there was much back and forth over whether Siddaramaiah should contest from two seats – Varuna and Kolar.

However, it was eventually decided that Siddaramaiah would contest from one seat and settled for Varuna.

Moily also stressed that the polls would be fought on local issues.

Accusing the Centre of seeking a merger between Amul and Karnataka Milk Federation brand Nandini, the Congress leader also said it became a controversy because Union Home Minister Amit Shah “indicated a merger”.

“People suspect that if the BJP comes back to power, they will allow Amit Shah’s wish to come true. Nandini in Karnataka is the best, there is no need for a merger,” he said.

Hitting out at JD(S) leader and former CM HD Kumaraswamy, Moily said even when the JD(S) was the junior partner, the Congress made him the chief minister but he failed to manage the government which was given to him on a “platter”.

The people will reject their politics of opportunism, he claimed.

“The behaviour particularly of Deve Gowda is to favour the BJP to safeguard the interests of his family. No raids have been conducted on the properties of his family that itself shows they are favouring the BJP,” Moily alleged.

Asked what message would the Karnataka polls send out for 2024, Moily said, “If you look at the history, Karnataka has always played a crucial role in the formation of the government at the Centre.

“The victory in Karnataka will pave the way for the formation of a Congress-led government at the Centre in 2024,” he claimed.

In the outgoing 224-member assembly, the BJP currently has 119 seats, followed by the Congress with 75 and the JD (S) with 28 seats. Two seats are vacant.

The Congress is seeking to wrest power from the BJP in Karnataka, the only southern state where the saffron party is in power.

While polling for the Karnataka assembly polls would take place on May 10, the counting of votes would take place on May 13.

Karnataka: Cong announces 3rd list of candidates, Laxman Savadi allotted ticket

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: Karnataka Congress on Saturday announced the third list of 43 candidates for the state assembly elections. Former deputy chief minister Laxman Savadi, who joined Congress from BJP, has been allotted the ticket from Athani constituency in Belagavi district.

In the party’s third list, Laxman Savadi’s name appeared on the top.

Interestingly, the party has not announced the ticket for the Hubballi-Dharwad Central constituency for which former chief minister and senior BJP leader Jagadish Shettar has locked horns with the saffron party.

    MS Education Academy

Sources explain that the Congress leaders have already approached and assured Shettar of their ticket and position if he joins Congress.

The party has named G.B. Malatesh as the candidate for the Shikaripura constituency from where former chief minister B.S. Yediyurappa’s son B.Y. Vijayendra is contesting.

Siddaramaiah’s loyalist Umashree has been denied a ticket from Terdal constituency from where Siddappa Ramappa Konnur has been fielded. Film producer Umapathy Srinivas Gowda has managed to obtain a ticket from Bommanahalli constituency in Bengaluru.

K.M. Shivalinge Gowda, who joined Congress from JD(S), has been allotted ticket for Arasikere constituency. The party has fielded Banavasi Rangaswamy from Hassan seat. Preetham Gowda is BJP’s candidate here and since this is the only seat in the district, the saffron party is in no mood to lose it.

The locals say that it is going to be a straight fight between BJP and JD(S) in Hassan.

Congress had announced 124 candidates in the first list and 42 candidates in the second list. It is yet to announce names for the 16 seats.

BJP govt weakening Constitution, paying lip service to Ambedkar: Cong

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Congress accused the BJP-led Centre on Friday of attacking and weakening the Constitution and paying only lip service to its architect, BR Ambedkar.

On Ambedkar’s birth anniversary, senior Congress leader Kumari Selja alleged that incidents of atrocities against the members of the Scheduled Caste (SC) and tribal communities have gone up under the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) regime, and accused the ruling party of weakening the social security of the SCs, Scheduled Tribes (STs) and Other Backward Classes (OBCs).

She said the Congress is committed towards ensuring social justice for the oppressed communities and promised that it will set up a national council of social justice, introduce a socio-economic caste census and bring a “Rohith Vemula Act” to protect SC, ST and OBC students in educational institutions across the country.

    MS Education Academy

“Although the prime minister, the BJP and the RSS pay lip service to Babasaheb Ambedkar, they are destroying everything he worked to achieve in his life and are attacking the Constitution, weakening the economic position and social security of Dalits and backward classes, and spreading hatred,” Selja told reporters here.

“The Congress is strongly committed to social justice for all communities. In our Raipur resolution, we have committed to systematic efforts, reversing the (Narendra) Modi government’s attack on social justice through measures, including creating a new national council of social justice, conducting a socio-economic caste census along with the census every decade, passing a Rohith Vemula Act to protect SC, ST and OBC students in educational institutions and ensuring an effective implementation of the SC-ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act,” she added.

Alleging that the Constitution drafted by Ambedkar is under attack, the Congress leader said people’s issues are not being discussed in Parliament, even though crores of rupees are being spent on a new Parliament building while preventing the existing one from functioning.

“We cannot talk about any people’s issue — unemployment, inflation or the Adani scam. A budget of Rs 45 lakh crore of public money is passed without any discussion,” she said.

Selja alleged that institutions are being misused and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) are being used to target the BJP’s political rivals as 95 per cent of the cases filed by these agencies are against opposition leaders.

“The BJP’s washing machine removes cases against leaders who join that party,” she said.

Claiming that pressure is being exerted on the judiciary, the Congress leader said the law minister has slowly increased his open attacks on the judicial system and now started calling retired judges “anti-national”.

“The law minister himself admitted that a former CJI had written asking for protection from online trolls. We saw the spectacle a few years ago of sitting judges warning of danger to the judiciary,” she said.

Selja said Ambedkar wanted the Constitution to reign supreme, bring equality between people belonging to all castes and communities and the government to work for the welfare of Dalits and all communities oppressed by the caste system.

She also said over the last week, people have seen how the prime minister makes a big “tamasha” of small events, including the online inauguration of a train, visiting a safari, personally giving appointment letters for positions such as train manager, ticket clerk and postal assistant.

Noting that Ambedkar had warned against this kind of hero-worship, she wondered if his last words — “in politics, bhakti is a sure road to degradation and to eventual dictatorship” — may prove prophetic and urged “bhakts” to listen to his wise words.

The Congress general secretary also claimed that cases of atrocities are rising every year under the current government as the crime rate against Dalits and adivasis has gone up by a third.

Referring to data complied by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), she said in 2021, 50,900 crimes were committed against SCs, a 32-per cent increase from 38,670 such incidents recorded in 2015, adding that there were 8,802 crimes against STs in 2021, a 34-per cent increase from 6,568 registered in 2016.

“The vicious statements against religious minorities are only step one on the BJP-RSS agenda, where minorities, Dalits, adivasis, OBCs are reduced to second-class citizens,” Selja alleged.

Dalits are bearing the brunt of the growing economic inequality under this “suit-boot sarkar” as the poor are getting poorer and the rich richer, she said, adding that the poorest 20 per cent Indians have seen their real income fall by nearly 50 per cent and the lower-middle class by 25 per cent, even as the richest 20 per cent have seen a more than 40 per cent growth in their wealth.

‘Orwellian state being created..’: Cong on ED case against BBC

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Congress on Thursday slammed the Centre after the Enforcement Directorate registered a case against news broadcaster BBC India, alleging that the government is determined to impose a “dictatorial government” where there is “tyranny of the executive.”

The ED has registered a FEMA case against BBC India with allegations of foreign exchange violations, official sources said Thursday, two months after the Income-Tax department surveyed its office premises.

A deputy managing editor of the news company has deposed before the agency.

    MS Education Academy

The ED has called for documents and the recording of statements of some company executives under provisions of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA), the officials said. The probe is essentially looking at purported foreign direct investment (FDI) violations by the company, they said.

Asked about the development at a press conference at AICC headquarters, Congress spokesperson Anshul Avijit said, “We know the atmosphere that is being created by the Orwellian sort of state here where the freedom of expression and press has completely been clamped down.”

“It is not new, it has been happening, there are changes in laws but far from that there are threats and intimidation so whoever dares criticise this government is actually thrown in jail,” Avijit said.

He also spoke about the incident where students of Delhi University were suspended for showing a recent BBC documentary on 2002 Gujarat riots.

“This is the kind of state we live in. I really fear the freedom of the press as well. The new IT laws that have come out, they have come under much criticism but nothing deters this government.

“They are determined to impose a dictatorial government in which the executive rules, so you have the tyranny of the executive,” the Congress leader said.

On February 14 this year, the I-T department conducted survey operations at the London-headquartered broadcaster’s offices in Delhi and Mumbai as part of an investigation into alleged tax evasion. The survey went on for three days.

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), the administrative body for the I-T department, had then said the income and profits shown by various BBC group entities were “not commensurate” with the scale of their operations in India and they failed to pay on certain remittances by its foreign entities.

The BBC, after the tax survey, had said they will “continue to cooperate with the authorities and hope matters are resolved as soon as possible.”

The action had led to a sharp political debate with the ruling BJP accusing the BBC of “venomous reporting” while the Opposition questioned the timing — weeks after the broadcaster aired a two-part documentary ‘India: The Modi Question.’

Cong targets Ram Madhav, RSS leader says he will file defamation suit

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Congress on Tuesday asked why the CBI or ED is not knocking at the doors of RSS leader Ram Madhav after former Jammu and Kashmir governor Satyapal Malik alleged that he was involved in corruption, a charge strongly rejected by the former BJP general secretary.

Addressing a press conference here, Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera said in October 2021, Malik had claimed that a senior RSS functionary had offered him a bribe of Rs 300 crore to clear two files related to “Ambani” when he was the J-K governor. He claimed that in an interview to a YouTube channel on Monday, Malik named the RSS functionary as Madhav.

Asked about it, Madhav told PTI that these are “totally false allegations”.

    MS Education Academy

“The CBI has already thoroughly investigated the matter. I will be filing defamation charges against the peddlers of these false allegations very soon,” the RSS leader said.

Malik was the governor of Jammu and Kashmir between August 2018 and October 2019, and in October 2021 he was the governor of Meghalaya.

“Why is the CBI or ED not knocking at Ram Madhav’s doors, given that a former governor has exposed him,” Khera asked.

The Congress leader said the CBI had openly questioned the former governor at its headquarters but why has Ram Madhav has not been called for questioning yet.

“The ED-CBI raids or interrogates opposition leaders time and again, but why not BJP leaders? Why these double standards?

Khera also played out the purported interview of Malik.

“If Malik is speaking the truth then why the CBI, ED or other agencies have not taken action against Madhav, else there should be action against Malik if his claims are untrue,” he said.

Khera also claimed that Malik has sought Z-plus security as a former governor but he has only been provided a PSO and is living in his own house, whereas former Congres leader Ghulam Nabi Azad has been given a government bungalow and Z-plus security.

Adani-Hindenburg: Cong seeking JPC probe to hide Bharat Jodo Yatra failure, says Tomar

    [ad_1]

Gwalior: Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar on Sunday said the Congress is seeking a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe into allegations against firms of the Adani group to hide the failure of the party’s Bharat Jodo Yatra led by Rahul Gandhi and also due to desperation at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s popularity.

The United States-based Hindenburg Research has alleged stock manipulation and accounting fraud against firms of billionaire Gautam Adani, leading to the opposition, especially the Congress and Gandhi, targeting the Centre and the PM. The Adani group has denied the allegations.

“The JPC demand is baseless as the Centre has already clarified its stand. The Congress is making this demand to hide the failure of the Bharat Jodo Yatra. The Congress is also desperate due to the massive popularity of the prime minister. On the other hand, Rahul Gandhi is unable to become a leader of his own party,” Tomar said.

Cong supports Chhatrapati Shivaji’s inclusive Hindutva, says Patole

    [ad_1]

Nagpur: Maharashtra Congress chief Nana Patole on Friday said his party supported the Hindutva of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, which was inclusive and was not about bearing grudges against anyone.

He was replying to a question on state minister and Bharatiya Janata Party leader Chandrakant Patil’s statement that he would try to bring bitter adversaries Uddhav Thackeray and chief minister Eknath Shinde together on the plank of Hindutva.

“Our stance is very clear. The Congress is with the Hindutva of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and will remain with it. Hindutva is a culture and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj took a stand of taking everyone along instead of keeping grudges,” Patole said.

Asked about CM Shinde’s visit to Ayodhya on April 9, Patole said he too would be visiting the temple town in Uttar Pradesh soon.

“I have an invite to visit Ayodhya but have not been able to go as I have been busy with work. But I will be visiting Ayodhya soon,” Patole said.

Shinde rebelled against Thackeray in June last year, split the Shiv Sena and brought down the Maha Vikas Aghadi government, which also included the Congress and Nationalist Congress Party.

Shinde became CM with the support of the BJP, and has since faced “traitor” barbs from Thackeray’s Shiv Sena.
