Hijabi woman attacked on metro train in Canada, NCCM condemns

    [ad_1]

The National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) has condemned a hate crime attack on a Hijabi-clad woman by a man on the evening of March 9 on a metro train in Canada

The incident happened when the woman and her attackers were travelling in the metro between Vaughan Metropolitan Centre and Finch West on Line 1.

In a statement, the NCCM called the attack an ‘out-and-out Islamophobic attack’.

Describing the incident, the NCCM said the man approached the woman and asked her many questions about Muslims and Islam. “He then asked her a hypothetical question about what she would do if someone hit her head and got away with it,” adding, “you know what we do with people like you,” before pulling out a LARGE knife from his backpack.

“I was just trying to get to Spadina station to meet with some friends. I never thought something like this could happen on public transit in front of all these people. The moment I saw him take out his knife, I ran and ran until I was out of breath and a stranger helped me. I’ve never been so afraid in my life. I hope the police find this man and take him into custody and get him some help, so he doesn’t do this to any other Muslim woman again,” said Sara (pseudonym for the privacy of the survivor).

Stating such attacks as common in public transit, NCCM called for a change.

“This is not the first time we have seen an Islamophobic attack on a Muslim woman who wears a hijab on public transit. There is a problem in this country where spaces that most Canadians take for granted simply aren’t safe for Muslim women and people of colour. The recent spate of attacks on the TTC is alarming. It’s time for a change,” the NCCM statement read.

Toronto police said they are looking into the incident and efforts are on to nab the attacker.

BJP MP Arvind condemns party prez Sanjay’s comments on Kavitha

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: BJP Nizamabad MP Dharmapuri Arvind condemned his own party president Bandi Sanjay’s derogatory remarks on BRS MLC K Kavitha, which triggered massive protests across the state.

“Being the State president of a national party, he should have behaved more responsibly. I do not support his actions. Whatever he has said is in his individual capacity. The party has nothing to do with it. He has to come out clean on the issue,” he said.

Arvind said Sanjay should have acted responsibly while making comments. “if he corrects himself, it will be better for him. He has created the mess and he himself has to come out of it, Arvind said.

When he was told that some BJP leaders had pointed out that Sanjay’s remarks were part of a common ‘proverb’ used in Telangana, Arvind said there were a lot of proverbs which people of Telangana use frequently, but one should use those carefully without hurting sentiments and dignity.

“He cannot escape by saying that it is a common proverb,” he said. Arvind’s comments were surprising given that he is Kavitha’s main opponent in the Nizamabad Lok Sabha constituency.

Arvind defeated Kavitha in the 2019 Lok Sabha election after promising turmeric farmers that he would set up a board for them . The latter had won the seat in the 2014 polls.
    (Eom).

Arvind, who like many other BJP leaders has not been happy with the functioning style and unapologetic behaviour of Sanjay, also said the party president post was not a ‘power centre’ but only a coordination centre to carry out the instructions of the party high command

According to Maktoob Media, the incident took place on March 10 in Madhya Pradesh. The students had gone to a water tank near the main gate, which, apparently is a restricted area.

While they were descending, a security vehicle with staff reached the spot and started shouting and beating them, without any warning.

There was no signboard that said the area was restricted, said a student who spoke to Maktoob Media.

The victims – Nasheel KT, Abhishek R, Adnan, and Adil Rashif – did not expect an attack from the security side.

Following the attack, the Kerala Fraternity, a student collective on the campus has demanded action against the security personnel involved in the attack. They also urged the university administration to ensure student safety.

    CM Vijayan condemns:

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Sunday condemned the reported assault and said the growing hostility towards individuals based on their identities should be resisted.

“Attacks on Keralite students at @IGNTU are appalling & highlight the need to resist the growing hostility towards individuals based on their identities in our country. The university must take prompt action against the culprits & ensure the safety of all the students on campus,” Vijayan tweeted from his official Twitter page.

Rajya Sabha MP and Left leader John Brittas also sought strong action with regard to the incident and wrote a letter to Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

  • Omar Abdullah Joins Chorus, Seeks Cancellation of Purported Contract to APTECH Ltd.; Condemns ‘Use of Force & Lathich

    [ad_1]

    Asif Iqbal

Srinagar, Mar 8 (GNS): After widespread resentment by job aspirants and condemnations from politicians cutting across party lines, Jammu Kashmir National Conference senior leader and vice-president Omar Abdullah has sought an immediate cancellation of purported contract to the Company for conducting exams.

Taking to microblogging site Twitter, Omar Abdullah wrote; “This contract must immediately be cancelled. What is the point of black listing company if they are going to be awarded plum contracts.”

“This contract is even more dangerous because it puts at risk the future of scores of aspirants who rely on JKSSRB to conduct recruitment exams”, reads the tweet.

In a subsequent tweet, Omar wrote; “I condemn, in the strongest possible terms, the use of force & lathi charge against students & JKSSRB aspirants. These youngsters were exercising their democratic right to protest against the recent decision to engage a blacklisted firm #Aptech by JKSSRB.”

Notably, scores of JKSSRB aspirants assembled at Press Enclave here to register their protest against the purported grant of contract to APTECH Ltd. to conduct various exams in Jammu and Kashmir.

Many political leaders including Mehbooba Mufti and Sajad Gani Lone have also condemned the purported contract by administration to the ‘blacklisted’ company. (GNS)

JKNC Condemns Govt’s Appointment Of Blacklisted APTECH For JKSSB Exams

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir National Conference State Spokesperson Imran Nabi Dar on Monday slammed the government on selection and the award of contracts to ‘tainted’ and blacklisted APTECH Company for conducting the upcoming Jammu Kashmir Services Selection Board (JKSSB) exams.

Echoing the public rage over the decision, Imran, as per the news agency GNS, said “The Company has been penalized by the Supreme Court and is on the blocklists of various states including Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan. In J&K also the company was accused of blatant irregularities and violations of the law in altering the tender’s terms and conditions. Why is such a company being selected which has consistently failed to provide transparency and accountability in conducting such an exercise? This question begs to be answered. The board instead of addressing the genuine concerns and fear of the educated, skilled local youth seems hell-bent on destroying their future. Such an undue decision doesn’t inspire the confidence of aspirants in such public examinations.”

In the first place, the company shouldn’t have been allowed to compete in the tendering process. “Commercial interest should never outweigh the public interest. As is happening in this case. There is every likelihood of biases, favoritism, and unfairness in the said process. I hope the incumbent LG administration will refrain from letting the company conduct public examinations which require a high degree of secrecy/fairness as the future of aspirants would depend upon such examinations.”

There is a major scam at work, he said, “Despite J&K high court’s questioning the awarding of the contract to APTECH, the assigning of the contract to the same company doesn’t stand any reason. I also request the honorable high court to take Suo moto cognizance of the issues in the public interest.” (GNS)

Palestine condemns Israeli PM’s visit to West Bank settlement

    [ad_1]

Ramallah: Palestine has condemned the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to the Israeli settlement of Har Brakha near the northern West Bank city of Nablus.

The Palestinian Foreign Ministry on Thursday said in a press statement that “the provocative visit of Netanyahu into the West Bank and the hostile statements and stances he made are rejected and condemned”.

A statement issued by Netanyahu’s office said that he and his wife Sara arrived in the settlement to condole the family of the two Israelis who were killed in a shooting attack carried out by Palestinians in the town of Hawara, south of Nablus on Sunday.

On Sunday, a Palestinian gunman opened fire at a vehicle of two Israelis in Hawara and killed them. In response, Israeli settlers attacked the town and burned dozens of cars and homes, Xinhua news agency reported.

The Palestinian Foreign Ministry added, “Netanyahu’s visit has no legitimate or legal characteristic, contrary to the rules of international law, UN resolutions, and the signed agreements.”

It said that “the visit reveals the true face of the Israeli government and its Prime Minister, who leads a government of settlements and settlers and sabotages the opportunity to revive the peace process”.

The Israeli Prime Minister’s visit comes amid tensions between the Palestinians and Israelis since January 1.

Israel took control of the West Bank in 1967 and established dozens of settlements on it. The settlement issue is one of the most prominent aspects of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and one of the main reasons for suspending the last direct peace negotiations between the two sides in 2014.
