    Hyderabad: In solidarity with violence-hit Manipur, the Hyderabad Solidarity Forum gathered near the Nampally Exhibition Grounds on Tuesday wearing black masks and holding placards.

    The Hyderabad Solidarity Forum released a statement describing the situation in Manipur as the “perfect example” of a culture fed with divisive politics and religious hate.

    “Fuelled by the rampant spread of divisive communal narratives, such violence has taken the shape of riots, evictions, murder, calls to genocide, confiscation of lands and a plethora of other tactics deployed by dominant majority communities who have vested economic and political interests. Mainstream narratives of these incidents ensure that the voices and the realities of the marginalised are silenced,” the press noted read.

    Condemning the ethnic violence that left 60 dead, and more than 23,000 displaced across the state, the Hyderabad Solidarity Forum’s statement demanded collective action against violence fed with hate.

    “We take a collective stance against such violence, oppression and divisive narratives fuelled by false information. We aim to revive the spirit of unity, understanding, goodwill and peace that our country so desperately needs. We demand the cessation of violence in the state and the recognition of the rights of the minority communities to their lands,” the statement read.

    SRINAGAR: Political parties of JK expressed outrage over the killing of five army personnel in an encounter in the Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir.

    Condemning the attack, former chief minister Omar Abdullah said terror is a scourge that has blighted numerous lives over the decades in J&K.

    In a tweet, he wrote, “Tragic news from Rajouri where 5 army personnel have laid down their lives in the line of duty. Terror is a scourge that has blighted numerous lives over the decades in J&K & deserves unreserved condemnation. I send my sincere condolences to the families of those we lost today.”

    Terming the loss of lives of soldiers as ‘terrible’, former chief minister and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti took to Twitter and said, “Terrible news coming in. My deepest condolences to the families of those who died in the line of duty.” She also expressed condolences.

    Former Union Minister and veteran Congress leader Prof Saifuddin Soz in a statement said, “ Rajouri terror attack that claimed lives of five army men in the line of duty is a terrible news and I unequivocally condemn this heinous attack,” Soz said.

    President of the Apni Party and senior political leader Altaf Bukhari said the sacrifice of the soldiers for the safety of the nation will never be forgotten.

    Bukhari tweeted, “Deeply saddened by the tragic news from Rajouri. My thoughts are with the families of the brave soldiers who lost their lives in the ongoing encounter. Their sacrifice for the safety of our nation will never be forgotten.”

    “We strongly condemn the act of terror in Rajouri. These are senseless acts of violence perpetrated by lunatics. And they will inshallah rot in hell,” the chairman of Peoples Conference Sajad Lone tweeted.

    New Delhi: More than 30 LGBTQIA+ collectives of law school students have said the Bar Council of India (BCI) resolution urging the Supreme Court not to deal with pleas seeking legalisation of same-sex marriage is “antithetical” to the Constitution.

    The apex bar body, on April 23, had expressed its concern on the same-sex marriage issue being heard in the Supreme Court, saying it would be “catastrophic” to overhaul something as fundamental as the concept of marriage and the matter should be left to the legislature.

    The resolution, which was issued by the BCI after a joint meeting attended by representatives of all state bar councils, said any decision by the apex court in such a sensitive matter may prove very harmful to the future generation of the country.

    Condemning the stand, the LGBTQIA+ collectives of over 600 law school students said, “The (BCI) resolution is ignorant, harmful, and antithetical to our Constitution and the spirit of inclusive social life. As future members of the Bar, it has been alienating and hurtful to see our seniors engage in such hateful rhetoric.”

    “It attempts to tell queer persons that the law and the legal profession have no place for them. We, the undersigned, are queer and allied student groups across Indian law schools,” they said in a statement.

    The statement said that the very objective of making the Constitution was to save the minorities from the ‘rules and regulations’ drawn by the upper-class casteist and patriarchal society.

    “Constitutional morality dictates that marriage equality must not be made subject to the wishes of a casteist, cis-heteronormative, and patriarchal society. It is to save people from the worst scourges of public opinion that we have a Constitution in the first place,” the statement read.

    It also condemned the BCI’s affirmation that 99.9% of Indians oppose same-sex marriage.

    “Having cited no real authority, the BCI blatantly concocts statistics of ‘99.9%’ of Indians opposing same-sex marriage,’ to run the worn-out theory that queer persons constitute a ‘minuscule minority’. The usage of hateful rhetoric is consistent throughout the Resolution; the BCI feels no shame in calling demands for marriage equality ‘morally compunctive’ and ‘a social experiment’. We condemn this hateful speech in the strongest possible terms,” the statement read.

    The BCI must re-familiarise itself with the role envisioned during its establishment, look at the state of the Indian legal profession, and devote its resources to more pressing challenges rather than needlessly entering constitutional debates, the statement said.

    “We are most troubled by the BCI’s stunning disregard for constitutional morality. Our Constitution is a counterweight to majoritarianism, religious morality, and unjust public opinion..,” it said.

    The students belong to 36 law schools, including NMIMS Hyderabad, National Law University Delhi, Faculty of Law, Delhi University and Gujarat National Law University.

    A five-judge Constitution bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justices S K Kaul, S R Bhat, Hima Kohli and P S Narasimha is continuing with its hearing arguments on the pleas seeking validation of same-sex marriage for the sixth day on Thursday.

    SRINAGAR: The politicians and political parties of Jammu and Kashmir cutting across the divide extended condolences over the death of five army soldiers in a militant attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district.

    Expressing his anguish over the incident, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Thursday said, “I am deeply anguished by the loss of lives of brave Army personnel in a tragic incident at Poonch. Their rich service to the nation will never be forgotten. My thoughts are with the bereaved families,” he said on Twitter.

    Former JK chief minister Omar Abdullah extended his heartfelt condolences to the breaved families and said the heinous act should be unequivocally condemned.

    Omar took to his Twitter handle to condemn the militant attack on the army vehicle in Poonch.

    “Terrible news of a terror attack in Poonch that claimed the lives of five army jawans in the line of duty. I unequivocally condemn this heinous attack & send my condolences to the loved ones of those killed today. May the souls of the departed rest in peace,” Omar wrote on Twitter.

    Condemning the attack PDP President Mehbooba Mufti wrote on her twitter, “Strongly condemn the heinous attack in Poonch. My deepest condolences to the families of the army jawans who were killed.”

    Apni Party president Syed Altaf Bukhari described the attack as act of cowardice and expressed his condolences with the families of the slain soldiers.

    “Deeply saddened by the cowardly terrorist attack in Poonch that claimed lives of five soldiers. My heartfelt condolences to the families of the brave hearts who made the ultimate sacrifice for the nation. We stand with our armed forces and their families in this difficult time,” wrote Bukhari on Twitter.

    Peoples Conference chairman Sajad Lone while condemning the Poonch terrorist attack that left five soldiers dead said that the “scourge of violence and terror tragically perseveres and refuses to go”.

    “Terrible and tragic news of the attack on an army vehicle and five fatalities. Strongly condemn this dastardly act of terror by cowards. The scourge of violence and terror tragically perseveres and refuses to go,” Lone wrote on his Twitter.

    In a statement, the army’s Northern Command said that an army vehicle moving between Bhimber Gali and Poonch in the Rajauri sector was fired on by unidentified terrorists at about 3 pm and caught fire due to likely use of grenades by militants.

    “Five personnel of the Rashtriya Rifles Unit deployed for Counter Terrorist operations, in this area, have unfortunately lost their lives in the incident,” it added.

    Another soldier, who sustained serious injuries, was evacuated immediately and rushed to the Army Hospital at Rajouri. He is currently under treatment.

    Washington: As many as 44 Indian-American organisations have condemned the repeated attacks and instances of vandalism at various Indian institutions and the recent attacks on Indian diplomatic missions in San Francisco, London, and Brisbane, which they said have left the community in a state of shock and fear.

    Under the banner of “Indian Diaspora Against Hate,” several eminent Indian-Americans and organisations from diverse backgrounds — cultural, linguistic and religious — across the country issued a signed letter condemning the violent attacks in which they called on all civic officials and federal, state and local law enforcement to take measures to ensure the safety of the Indian-American community.

    Last month, a group of pro-Khalistan protesters attacked and damaged the Indian Consulate in San Francisco, prompting sharp condemnation from Indian-Americans who demanded immediate action against those responsible for it.

    A group of protesters carrying pro-Khalistan flags and banners in support of radical Khalistani leader Amritpal Singh gathered at the Parliament Square in London last month.

    Representing Indian Americans from various cities and geographical locations, the organisations and community members urged citizens to be cautious of hate groups and report them to the administration.

    They have also urged the Department of Homeland Security and Department of Justice to monitor extremists’ activities, prevent hateful attacks and take decisive action against these perpetrators of hate.

    “Many Hindu community leaders have been threatened and they even attacked my residence recently,” said Dr Romesh Japra, cardiologist and community leader.

    Madhu H, Social activist from Southern California said: “Khalistani extremists have a long and tragic track record of violence, including being responsible for the downing of an Air India jet in 1985, killing more than 300 people.” Venu M, a Hindu Leader from California State Capitol Sacramento was remembering the desecration of Gandhi statue in the City of Davis, said “Indian-Americans are increasingly concerned about the lack of safety for Indian- American institutions in the wake of these attacks.” The letter welcomed the statement of the State Department condemning the attack against the Indian Consulate at San Francisco.

    It also welcomes the statement of Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, rejecting hatred and attacks on Hindu temples.

    It said that the community is concerned that the failure to check the violence by people who are motivated to disrupt peace and create a condition of fear is only encouraging an escalation in aggression, a media release said.

    “Indian Diaspora Against Hate” is a forum to collaborate with Indian-American organisations, institutions, and Hindu temples who are concerned about the safety, security and well-being of the Indian diaspora and voice their opinion to the civic and law enforcement agencies.

The French president’s views “are disheartening because the Chinese Communist Party’s threat to Taiwan is a growing danger to the global balance of power,” said Michael McCaul (R-Texas), chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

    The State Department argued that Macron’s comments were not as divisive as they might seem. “There is immense convergence between us and our European allies and partners and how we tackle [China’s] challenge head-on,” State Department spokesperson Vedant Patel told reporters on Monday.

    The White House took a similar tack. “We’ll let the Élysée speak for President Macron’s comments — we’re focused on the terrific collaboration and coordination that we have with France as an ally and a friend,” said National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby.

    Macron’s comments reflect his belief that European countries should embrace a concept of “strategic autonomy” on economic and geostrategic issues distinct from U.S. foreign policy settings. But that strategy is at odds with President Joe Biden’s efforts to create a common front with allies and partners — including those in the European Union — to fend off China’s and Russia’s threats to what the administration calls the “rules-based international order.”

    The uproar over Macron’s statements also reflects a divide in Europe over how to approach China — an economic powerhouse that many are loath to completely desert.

    EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who accompanied Macron for part of his visit, said she told Chinese paramount leader Xi Jinping during their meeting in Beijing last week that “the threat [of] the use of force to change [Taiwan’s] status quo is unacceptable.”

    The French embassy blamed the furor over Macron’s remarks on “overinterpretations” and said that France’s position on Taiwan is unchanged. Last year, then-French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian described Taiwan’s security as essential to regional stability and said that France was “very keen to act to prevent any conflict.”

    Macron was saying that “if we cannot end the conflict in #Ukraine, what credibility will we have on Taiwan? We seek to engage with China for peace&stability in Ukraine. And the Taiwan issue obviously came up in his talks w/Pres Xi,” the French embassy’s press counselor, Pascal Confavreux, said in a series of tweets on Monday.

    The Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in Washington, D.C. — the self-governing island’s de facto embassy — didn’t respond to a request for comment.

    Some GOP lawmakers called for a re-evaluation of the U.S.-French relationship. “If France is truly committed to abandoning democratic nations in favor of a brutal communist regime, the United States must reassess its posture toward France,” said Rep. Chris Smith (R-N.J.), chair of the Congressional Executive Commission on China. He called Macron’s statement a “seeming betrayal of democratic Taiwan.”

    Others saw a double standard in France’s support for U.S. efforts to defend Ukraine while turning a blind eye to China’s threat to Taiwan. “Macron wants the U.S. to ride to Europe’s rescue against Russian aggression, but apparently take a vow of neutrality against Chinese aggression in the Pacific,” Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) tweeted on Monday.

    Longer term, Macron’s comments could help bolster GOP lawmakers who want an end to the Biden administration’s massive outlay of cash and weaponry to support Ukraine’s battle against Russia. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) earlier this month called for an end to U.S. funding for what she calls a U.S. “proxy war with Russia.” And putative GOP presidential candidate Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida recently dismissed the war in Ukraine as a “territorial dispute” not vital to U.S. national security interests, a position he walked back several days later.

    “If Macron speaks for all of Europe, and their position now is they’re not going to pick sides between the U.S. and China over Taiwan…maybe we should basically say we’re going to focus on Taiwan and the threats that China poses, and you guys handle Ukraine and Europe,” Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) said in a tweet on Sunday.

    Former civil servants condemn Rijiju’s remarks on judiciary in open letter

    New Delhi: Former civil servants in an open letter on Thursday criticised Law Minister Kiren Rijiju for several of his comments which, they said, constituted a concerted attack by the government on the collegium system of appointments and on judicial independence.

    The open letter, signed by 90 former bureaucrats, argued that preserving the independence of the judiciary is non-negotiable, and any sign of executive overreach cannot be accepted in a democracy.

    “We write to you today in response to comments you made on various occasions and very recently at the India Today Conclave on March 18, 2023. Your statements that day are the latest in what is emerging as a concerted attack by the government on the collegium system of appointments, the Supreme Court of India and, ultimately, on judicial independence. We unequivocally condemn this onslaught,” the letter said.

    In the appointment of judges to the High Courts and Supreme Court it appears that it is the government that is stonewalling appointments, it said

    “Names forwarded by the collegium are left pending for years, only to be finally returned without approval. Candidates with distinguished careers marked by their commitment to due process and to constitutional norms are turned down by the government,” said the letter, written by the former civil servants under the banner of Constitutional Conduct Group.

    Rather than engage constructively with the Supreme Court and collegium, high offices of the executive such as yours, and that of the Vice President, have responded with venomous barbs, it said.

    The government’s continued refusal to accept some candidates can only give rise to the suspicion that the underlying intention is to create a pliant judiciary, the letter said.

    “We are puzzled by your repeated criticisms of the Supreme Court collegium while simultaneously stating that there was no confrontation between the government and the Supreme Court. To the average Indian, there does, indeed, seem to be a confrontation,” it said.

    It is no surprise that retired judges, senior lawyers, and experts have been expressing serious concern in the public domain on the urgent need to safeguard judicial independence, the letter said.

    Former Lieutenant Governor of Delhi Najeeb Jung, former home secretary G K Pillai, ex-foreign secretary Sujatha Singh and former health secretary K Sujatha Rao are among 90 signatories to the open letter.

    “The process of determining judicial appointments goes to the heart of this independence. It is a testament to their commitment to the institution that retired judges of the Supreme Court and High Courts are not mute spectators to abrasive attacks on the judiciary,” it said.

    “Yet you have not hesitated to call them anti-India and have stated that a few retired judges are working in tandem with activists, groupings you described as ‘anti-India gangs’ and attempting to influence the judiciary to ‘play the role of an Opposition party’,” the letter said.

    The bureaucrats also took exception to Rijiju’s remark that the government will take strict action against “those who have worked against the country.”

    “It seems to us that you are confusing the government with the country, construing criticism of the government as disloyalty to the country. You seem to believe that if a person disagrees with the views of the government, that is enough to permanently label him or her as ‘anti-national’,” they said in the letter and accused the Centre of trying to suppress dissent with punitive actions.

    “As the Law Minister, if you have concerns about opinions being expressed or discussions taking place in public fora, you can avail of multiple platforms and ways to respond, beginning with inviting dialogue,” the letter said.

    To label public-spirited citizens as an “anti-India gang” and threaten them with action which will exact “a price” rings of authoritarianism, and “unbecoming of your high post”, the letter read.

    The former civil servants said they recognise that there is need for continued deliberations on ways to improve the current system of judicial appointments, to deepen transparency, and the rigour of the process as also diversity amongst appointees.

    “We conclude by reminding you of a simple but cardinal truth: all organs of the State are bound by the Constitution of India and a government, simply because it is in a majority, cannot ride roughshod over Constitutional provisions regarding the separation of powers amongst the executive, the legislature and the judiciary. By doing so, you breach your own oath of office,” it said.

    “I’m not going to defend or condemn anything regarding social media. That’s not what I do. I’m not a Trump PR person. I’m a litigator and a lawyer,” he told NBC’s Chuck Todd.

    During an event held in the French capital of Paris on Sunday, Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, who also heads the Religious Zionist Party, said “there’s no such thing as Palestinians because there’s no such thing as a Palestinian people”.

    Lebanon

    Lebanon foreign ministry tweeted, “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates condemns the racist statements recently issued by the Israeli Minister of Finance and his denial of the existence of the Palestinian people and the sovereignty and independence of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.

    “The Ministry calls on the international community to take deterrent measures and reject deliberately provocative statements aimed at undermining a peaceful solution,” it added.

    Jordan

    Jordan foreign ministry on Monday summoned the Israeli Ambassador in Amman to protest Smotrich’s “provocative acts”.

    The ministry affirmed “the Jordanian government’s condemnation of the racist, inciting and extremist statements towards the brotherly Palestinian people, their right to exist, and their historical rights in their independent state.”

    Palestine

    The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday announced that it would demand the International Criminal Court to arrest Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, in response to statements in which he said that “there is no such thing as a Palestinian people.”

    Egypt’s ministry of foreign affairs spokesperson tweeted on Monday, “The statements of the Israeli Minister of Finance regarding the denial of the existence of the Palestinian people are inflammatory and unacceptable because they carry racist gestures that deny the facts of history and geography, and fuel feelings of anger and congestion among the masses of the Palestinian people, and even the peoples of the free world and those with living consciences around the world.

    The Israeli minister’s remarks came after a five-way meeting hosted by the Egyptian city of Sharm el-Sheikh and included Egypt, Jordan, Israel, Palestine and the United States, and ended with announcing “the need to achieve calm on the ground and prevent further violence.”

    These developments come at a time when tensions have escalated sharply across the occupied West Bank in recent months, amid repeated Israeli military raids on Palestinian towns.

    About 90 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire since the beginning of 2023, according to Palestinian data, while 14 Israelis were killed in separate attacks during the same period.
