  • India’s first cable-stayed rail bridge on Anji river in J-K near completion

India’s first cable-stayed rail bridge on Anji river in J-K near completion

    [ad_1]

Jammu: The first cable-stayed railway bridge of India is expected to be ready by May this year on the Anji river in Jammu and Kashmir, Northern Railway officials said.

Once ready, trains will run at a speed of 100 kmph (Km per hour) on the bridge being constructed around 80 km away from Jammu, they said.

Anji bridge between Katra and Reasi stations falls in the Reasi district of the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. The upcoming structure is part of the ambitious Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla-Rail Link (USBRL) project that railway minister Ashwini Vaishnav had announced to be completed next year.

According to officials, the last deck portion of Anji bridge which is designed to withstand the wind at the speed of 213 kmph is expected to be completed in May this year as six more segments of the bridge are yet to be launched.

“We have already completed 41 out of 47 segments. We are hopeful that the remaining ones would be completed by April-end or in the first week of May,” the official said.

He said the central span of the cable-stayed bridge is 290 metres and only a 52.5-metre portion remains to be completed.

“The speed of trains will be 100 kmph on this bridge which is the speed for the entire project. However, the trains will be stopped if the wind speed goes beyond 90 kmph,” the senior official said.

Currently, trains operate between Udhampur to Katra section. The project work on the 111-km Katra to Banihal line is currently underway and 52 km of this section including the bridges on Anji and Chenab are being built by the Konkan Railway. Banihal and Baramulla are also connected by trains.

Once completed, the USBRL project will connect the Kashmir Valley to the Indian rail network.

Anji bridge is an “asymmetrical” bridge erected on a single pylon and it has tunnels on both ends. A tunnel on the Katra end is 5 km in length while another on the Kashmir end is 3 km in length. A track is laid in both tunnels, according to officials.

The cable-stayed portion of Anji bridge is 472.25 metres while the total length of the bridge is 725.5 metres, which is divided into four parts including an embankment, officials said.

The deck level of the 193-metre tall bridge from the foundation is 51 meters, while the invested Y-shaped pylon above the deck level is 142 meters, the officials said, adding that the bridge work started in 2017.

However, the main cable-stayed bridge work started in April 2018, after the completion of the approach portion, an official said.

The official said the bridge has the codal life of 120 years and it will be able to bear the explosion of 40-kg of explosive material. The bridge will also have an integrated monitoring system with numerous sensors installed at various locations.

“Site-specific earthquake parameters studies were carried out by the Department of Earthquake Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee, to define the seismo-tectonic framework for the region,” the officer said.

According to railway officials, the bridge is located in the young-fold mountains of the Himalayas having extremely complex, fragile and daunting geological features in the form of faults, folds and thrusts. Besides seismic proneness of the region, detailed site-specific investigations were carried out by IIT, Roorkee and IIT, Delhi, they added.

  • Lokesh promises completion of all pending projects in Rayalaseema

Lokesh promises completion of all pending projects in Rayalaseema

    [ad_1]

Amaravati: Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leader Nara Lokesh on Thursday promised that if the party returns to power in Andhra Pradesh, all pending irrigation projects in Rayalaseema will be completed.

Interacting with people during ongoing padyatra Yuva Galam in Madanapalle, he alleged that Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy is more interested in looting the state than development, particularly the Rayalaseema region.

The farmers from Chinna Tippasamudram and Kothavaripalli met Lokesh at the Pulavandlapalli campsite and told him that they are facing several problems due to non-availability of water for irrigation. If the Chinna Tippasamudram pond is linked with Handri Neeva project, they will get sufficient water for irrigation which will solve all their problems.

The pond is spread over 500 acres which can supply irrigation water for over 1,000 acres, they said. If the pond is linked to Handri Neeva, they can cultivate two crops in a year and this will solve all their issues, the farmers told Lokesh and made an appeal to him to take up the works once the TDP is into power again.

Responding to the farmers, Lokesh said that Jagan Mohan Reddy is interested only in minting money by looting the state. Observing that 80 per cent of the works of Handri Neeva were completed during Chandrababu Naidu regime, he said Jagan Mohan Reddy did not bother to complete the remaining 20 per cent work.

“This clearly indicates that he is not interested in the farmers welfare. I am assuring you that when we are back into government, which is not far, all the pending projects will be completed, including the Handri Neeva project. Also, the pond of Chinna Tippasamudram too will be linked with the Handri Neeva,” Lokesh told the farmers.

Earlier, representatives of the Chittoor district Brahmin Seva Samakhya met Lokesh and told him that this government has scrapped all the welfare schemes for Brahmins. They appealed to Lokesh to revive all the schemes when the TDP government is formed again.

At Poolavandlapalli, local Valmiki Boya community leaders had a meeting with Lokesh. They appealed to Lokesh to see to it that Valmiki Boya community is included in the Scheduled Tribes (ST).

Maintaining that it is the TDP that encouraged the Valmiki community politically and provided several positions both in the party and in the government as well, Lokesh said that justice will be done to them when the TDP forms the government again.

At Yenumuvaripalli of Madanapalle Assembly segment, handloom workers met Lokesh and wanted identity cards be issued to them which this government stopped.

Lokesh promised to revive the issuance of the identity cards to all the handloom weavers and also will lift GST on handloom products.

Later, minorities representatives met the TDP General Secretary and complained to him that interest-free loans are not being extended to them. He promised to revive the scheme besides setting up an Islamic bank. Industrial clusters will be established in all the Assembly segments in the State to provide employment to the minorities youth, Lokesh added.

  • Two Decades On, Jetty Bridge Baramulla Far From Completion

Two Decades On, Jetty Bridge Baramulla Far From Completion

    [ad_1]

    by Masrat Nabi

BARAMULLA: 21 years on, Jetty Bridge on river Jhelum in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district is yet to be completed by the Jammu and Kashmir administration.

Pertinent to mention that in 2002, the foundation stone was laid for the construction of the bridge and work was allotted to Jammu and Kashmir Project Construction Corporation (JKPCC)-a government undertaking construction agency.

This bridge was supposed to be an alternate crossing over the river Jhelum that will bypass the town of Baramulla, significantly reducing traffic through the main town. The bridge would connect Khoja Bagh to Rafiabad’s Janbazpora and Chakloo areas and provide an alternate route for traffic between Baramulla and Kupwara.

The bridge has been a source of much anticipation and frustration for locals, as the potential to improve transportation infrastructure in the region continues to remain unfulfilled.

“We’ve been waiting for the bridge to be finished for over two decades, but it appears that the administration is too busy elsewhere,” said Abdul Rashid, a resident of Baramulla.

“In the last two decades, the executing agency has been able to erect only one pillar of the bridge,” says another local, Irfan Ahmad.

“It would take only 10 minutes to reach Rafiabad if the jetty bridge becomes a reality. In the absence of this bridge, we have to take a longer route and travel through the main town to reach Rafiabad,” Ahmad said.

JKPCC could not construct the bridge in all these 2 decades and now the administration has handed over the project to the R&B Department.

When contacted, a top official from district administration, rues lack of required funds to complete the construction of bridge.

He said that the delay in the completion of the bridge resulted in the cost escalation of project as the project cost soured from Rs 2 crore to around Rs 18 crore.

Executive Engineer R&B Division Baramulla said, “As of now, no construction work is going on at the site.”

He also refused to comment about the work to be completed by the department.

When tried to contact Shiekh Javid Maqbool, Superintending Engineer R&B, Baramulla- Kupwara Circle, he didn’t respond to our repeated calls.
