The EU will send a civilian mission to Moldova to help the Eastern European nation combat growing threats from abroad, officials have confirmed, following a string of reports that the Kremlin is working to destabilize the former Soviet Republic.

In a statement issued Monday, the bloc’s top diplomat, Josep Borrell, said that the mission, under the Common Security and Defence Policy, would step up “support to Moldova [to] protect its security, territorial integrity and sovereignty” against Russia.

Officials confirmed that the mission will focus on “crisis management and hybrid threats, including cybersecurity, and countering foreign information manipulation and interference.”

In February, the president of neighboring Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said Kyiv’s security services had intercepted Russian plans to “break the democracy of Moldova and establish control over Moldova.” The country’s pro-EU leader, President Maia Sandu, later alleged that “the plan included sabotage and militarily trained people disguised as civilians to carry out violent actions, attacks on government buildings and taking hostages.”

According to Vlad Lupan, Moldova’s former ambassador to the U.N. and a professor at New York University, Brussels’ move comes after “multiple signals Moldova would not be able to deal with Russian influence operations alone.” He told POLITICO that the mission would now have to focus on “communicating why the EU’s rule of law and democracy brings both respect and prosperity to the people compared to the Russian autocratic model.”

Home to just 2.6 million people, Moldova was for decades one of Moscow’s closest allies, and 1,500 Russian troops are currently stationed in the breakaway region of Transnistria. Elected in 2020, Sandu has repeatedly condemned the Kremlin for invading Ukraine and called for the withdrawal of its forces from her country. In June last year, EU leaders announced Moldova, as well as Ukraine, would be granted candidate status, beginning the process for its accession to become a new member state.

However, Moscow still maintains a significant hold on the country, operating several popular Russian-language state media outlets and supplying almost all of its natural gas. After the Russian energy giant Gazprom announced last year it would raise prices, as well as turn off the taps unless past debts were paid in full, Moldova, one of the Continent’s poorest countries, has turned to Brussels for support in diversifying its supplies.

Trump also said he had fulfilled his promises when it came to Iowans and also to conservative values.

“Together we achieved more for our values than any other administration in the history of our country, and it is not even close,“ he said, saying he took “historic action to protect the unborn.“ He also touted his support for “religious liberty“ and Israel.

On Thursday, Trump had been criticized by the Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America organization for saying abortion “is an issue that should be decided at the state level,” instead of being subject to a national ban. “President Trump’s assertion that the Supreme Court returned the issue of abortion solely to the states is a completely inaccurate reading of the Dobbs decision and is a morally indefensible position for a self-proclaimed pro-life presidential candidate to hold,” President Marjorie Dannenfelser said in a statement.

It’s not clear when Trump made his remarks, but he didn’t directly address Dannenfelser’s criticism.

Former Vice President Mike Pence, who is expected to enter the 2024 presidential race, addressed the group in person in Clive, Iowa. In remarks that focused heavily on his own faith and devotion, Pence commended Trump for his Supreme Court appointments and explained his rationale for supporting American aid to Ukraine.

Other 2024 contenders who addressed the group included former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson, Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy.

Washington will build a global coalition to combat the illicit synthetic drug trade, the statement said, in an effort to “develop solutions, drive national actions, and create synergies and leverage among like-minded countries.”

The sanctions come as Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and members of his security cabinet plan to meet with U.S. officials this week about fentanyl and arms trafficking.

President Joe Biden’s push to counter drug traffickers also coincides with numerous lawmakers’ critiques that his administration has not done enough to stem the tide of drugs flowing from Mexico. As tensions with the southern neighbor rise, prominent Republicans have even called for bombing drug cartels in Mexico to solve the problem.

Former President Donald Trump, who is seeking a second term in the White House, has floated the idea of sending “special forces” and using “cyber warfare” to target cartel leaders. Reps. Dan Crenshaw (R-Texas) and Mike Waltz (R-Fla.) introduced a bill seeking authorization for the use of military force to “put us at war with the cartels.” Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) said he’s open to sending U.S. troops into Mexico to target drug lords — even without Mexico City’s permission.

“We need to start thinking about these groups more like ISIS than we do the mafia,” Waltz told POLITICO.

Hyderabad zoo implements measures to combat summer heat

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Amid rise in maximum temperature in Hyderabad, the Nehru Zoological park is taking proactive measures to ensure the health and well-being of its animals. With temperatures steadily rising over the past few days, the zoo has installed coolers, sprinklers, and foggers throughout the park to combat the heat.

More than 200 sprinklers have been set up across the zoo, with small rain guns installed in each enclosure to ensure that every animal has access to relief from the heat. In addition, over one thousand foggers have been arranged in key areas such as the reptile house, New Macaws, all Pheasantry, and the Aviary area.

The zoo authorities are also ensuring that the lawns and gardens are watered continuously to keep the enclosures and surrounding areas cool and green. Over one kilogram of thunga grass has been placed on the roofs of the enclosures and night houses to further insulate the animals from the heat.

    MS Education Academy

To help the animals beat the heat, the zoo authorities are providing them with seasonal fruits like watermelon. This not only helps to keep the animals hydrated but also provides a much-needed source of vitamins and nutrients.

With these measures in place, the Nehru Zoological park is well-equipped to handle the summer heat and ensure the health and well-being of its animals.

Aden: Yemen’s Defence Minister received a military delegation from the Saudi Arabia-led coalition in the country’s southern port city of Aden, according to state media.

Mohsen Muhammad Al-Daeri, along with local Yemeni government officials, held a meeting with the high-ranking Saudi delegation on strengthening cooperation on the combat readiness of local pro-government armed forces, reports Xinhua news agency.

Al-Daeri thanked the Saudi-led coalition for “generous support” and for their commitment to “the legitimate government and the rights of the Yemeni people”.

For its part, the Saudi delegation, headed by Major General Hamid Muhammad Al-Ghamdi, affirmed the “steadfast and supportive position of the coalition towards Yemen’s people until ending the Houthis, restoring the state and achieving lasting peace”t.

Various regions in Yemen have witnessed sporadic armed confrontations between the local warring factions after a cease-fire brokered by the UN expired in October last year.

Yemen has been mired in a civil war since late 2014 when the Houthi militia stormed several northern cities and forced the government out of the capital Sanaa.

Dems name new members to combat GOP investigations — including Schiff

    [ad_1]

    election 2024 california senate 58803

Democrats will get their first test run on pushing back against Republicans on the panel, chaired by McCarthy-antagonist-turned-ally Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), on Wednesday during the committee’s first hearing, centered on the border. In addition to investigations, Democrats on the Judiciary Committee will be at the forefront of any impeachment inquiries, as Republicans have called for forcibly removing Mayorkas over his handling of the border.

Meanwhile, several new freshmen members have joined the Oversight Committee, including Rep. Dan Goldman (D-N.Y.), who was counsel to House Democrats during the first impeachment of former President Donald Trump.

The panel’s Democrats also named Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) to serve as vice ranker, a possibility reported by POLITICO last week. It’s a move that could be highly significant if Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) has to miss hearings as he undergoes cancer treatment.

The new members “have come from all over America to fight for their communities. Now they join the Democrats on the Oversight and Accountability Committee — the ‘Truth Squad’ — to conduct thorough and fact-based oversight to ensure an effective, efficient, and accountable American government that delivers for the American people,” Raskin said in a statement about Democrats’ line up.

Republicans on the Oversight Committee have vowed to investigate dozens of areas within the Biden administration. But they’ve signaled panel Republicans’ main focus will be targeting President Joe Biden himself, primarily by delving into Hunter Biden’s business dealings and other members of the Biden family; the coronavirus pandemic, including federal government directives and the “origins” of the virus; the border, and the 2021 withdrawal from Afghanistan.

And the panel includes some of the House GOP’s most right-leaning members, including Reps. Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.), Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) and Scott Perry (R-Pa.), the chair of the House Freedom Caucus.

Democrats still need to pick their members for a Republican-run select subcommittee that will look into the “weaponization” of the federal government, a concession McCarthy made to conservatives in order to secure the speakership.

McCarthy unveiled the GOP picks for the panel last week, naming 11 Republicans plus Jordan to lead the sweeping committee — more members than expected. The House is expected to pass a resolution expanding the size of the subcommittee, which would proportionally boost the number of Democratic seats.

Canada appoints its first government position to combat Islamophobia

    [ad_1]

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Thursday appointed activist Amira Elghawaby as the country’s first representative to combat Islamophobia.

In a statement, the Prime Minister’s Office said that “in her capacity as Special Representative, Amira Elghawaby will fill the position to be an advisor, expert and representative to support and strengthen the government’s efforts to combat Islamophobia, systemic racism, racial discrimination and religious intolerance.”

Specifically, she will advise the Trudeau government on what policies and legislation should be introduced to counter the threat of Islamophobia.

Elghawaby is a former journalist and founding member of the Canadian Anti-Hate Network, and was instrumental in the creation of the National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM), the largest Muslim organization in the country.

Elghawaby graduated from the School of Journalism at Carleton University in Canada, and worked briefly for CBC in Ottawa after her graduation, and currently contributes a freelance column to the “Toronto Star” newspaper.

In a series of tweets on Thursday, Elghawaby wrote,

“Thanks to @HonAhmedHussen, his team and the Government of Canada for making this position a reality to foster greater diversity and inclusion across the country.”
“It is an honor for me to serve in this role. I want to thank PM @JustinTrudeau for his work in fighting Islamophobia and ensuring that Canadian institutions are inclusive for Canadian Muslims, and for all people.”

“I look forward to meeting with elected officials, policy makers and community leaders across the country to amplify the voices of Canadian Muslims and work together to combat discrimination and hate in all its forms.”

“We must never forget: Ibrahima Barry, Mamadou Tanou Barry, Khaled Belkacemi, Aboubaker Thabti, Abdelkrim Hassane, Mohamed-Aslim Zafis and Azzedine Soufiane #RememberJan29.”

“We must never forget: Salman Afzaal, Madiha Salman, Yumna Salman, Talat Afzaal #OurLondonFamily Always in our hearts.”

In recent years, a series of bloody attacks have targeted Canadian Muslims, most recently in 2021, when four members of a Muslim family were killed when someone ran them over with his truck in Ontario.

In 2017, six Muslims were killed and five injured in an attack on a mosque in Quebec City.

The creation of the new position is part of the recommendations of a national summit on Islamophobia organized by the federal government, in June 2021, in response to the attacks.

Try these natural home remedies to combat viral infection

    [ad_1]

These days, viral fever is a prevalent illness that affects both adults and children. One of the risk factors for viral fever during this season is the shift in the climate. Most airborne infections, which we contract through the air we breathe and can potentially spread from an infected person, are what cause viral fever. Humans are vulnerable to a variety of viral illnesses, including the common cold and the flu. The most typical sign of many viral infections is a mild fever or low-grade fever. Do not worry; a mild viral fever can be well treated at home with a well-balanced diet that includes many comforting foods, plenty of drinks, and appropriate rest. In addition to this, Mother Nature has bestowed upon us a wide variety of herbs that function as a wonderful natural cure for treating viral fever. To treat low-grade viral fever, though, try some of these all-natural treatments if the fever doesn’t go away right away.

Ginger’s extraordinary ability to relieve pain and lessen the symptoms of viral fever is made possible by its significant anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and analgesic capabilities. Strong antibacterial qualities in honey help treat coughs and reduce the severity of infections. To relieve viral fever, steep one teaspoon of grated ginger in a cup of water for two to five minutes. Strain the mixture, then add one teaspoon of honey.
