Kalakshetra closes college till April 6 in wake of protests by students

    [ad_1]

Chennai: The Kalakshetra, an iconic institution here, has announced closure of its college till April 6, in the wake of protests by students against alleged sexual harassment and misconduct on the campus.

Students of the Rukmini Devi College of Fine Arts, being run by the Kalakshetra on its campus, resorted to the protest at the “tapovan”, the prayer space at the entrance of the college on Thursday demanding justice. They alleged harassment by a senior faculty and sought appropriate action against him.

As the allegations surfaced a few days ago, chairperson of National Commission of Women (NCW) Rekha Sharma, visited Kalakshetra on Wednesday to enquire about the allegations.

The principal announced that the college will be closed till April 6 from Thursday evening.

“Rukmini Devi College of Fine Arts will remain closed from 5.15 pm today to April 6. All inmates are requested to vacate the hostel within two days with immediate effect,” he said in a circular.

Exams scheduled on the above days have been postponed and new dates would be announced in due course, the Principal added.

Meanwhile, Kalakshetra in a statement said the Chairman and the Governing Board is fully appraised of protests and grievances and all steps would be taken to ensure that no person who is involved in any unsavory activity in the Foundation will be spared.

“There have been some allegations which we are considering. Some of the students of the Foundation have been protesting in our campus.
The Director and the Deputy director from administration have spoken to the students taking into consideration the sentiments and grievances of the students.

“On 29.03.2023, the Chairperson of the National Commission for Women (NCW) had also visited our campus and made enquiries about the allegations. The Foundation had already sought explanation from the persons against whom some allegations have been made and on receipt of their explanation, the Chairman and the Governing Board will consider the appropriate action that has to be taken in accordance with its Rules and Regulations and in conformity with law.”

“The Chairman and the Governing Board is fully appraised of protests and grievances and all steps will be taken to ensure that no person who is involved in any unsavory activity in the Foundation will be spared,” the statement said.

Carnatic musician and writer T M Krishna called upon the Kalakshetra management to take necessary action to address the “very serious complaints.”

“I am writing to you regarding the complaints of sexual harassment and toxicity in the Kalakshetra environment that has been raised over the past few months,” he said in an open letter to the college principal requesting for action.

CPI-M leader’s wife got college teacher’s job without clearing exam: Trinamool

    [ad_1]

Kolkata: A senior Trinamool Congress leader on Thursday made an explosive allegation claiming that the wife of a senior CPI-M leader in West Bengal secured a non-teaching job in a reported Kolkata college without appearing or qualifying for the examination on this count.

Trinamool state General Secretary and spokesman Kunal Ghosh alleged that Mili Chakraborty, wife of CPI-M central committee member and the former leader of Left in the Assembly Sujan Chakraborty secured the job of “instrument keeper” at Dinabandhu Andrews College without appearing for examination on this count.

“Several complaints relating to irregularities in recruitments in educational institutions of the state during the previous Left Front regime have surfaced. These have been forwarded to the office of state Education Minister Bratya Basu for further investigation. Let the past documents be examinations and the complaints be looked into,” he told media persons.

Ghosh claimed that Mili Chakroborty was associated as an employee with Dinabandhu Andrews College for 34 until she retired in 2021. He also claimed that the wife of the CPI-M leader retired from the college with a base pay of Rs 55,000 a month and is entitled for pension.

Rubbishing the allegation, Sujan Chakraborty said that his wife joined the services after properly appearing and qualifying in the examination on this count through a proper joining letter.

“She retired in the same post that she joined. This proves that there were no irregularities or nepotism in the education system of the state during the previous Left Front regime. Such baseless allegations are being raised by those Trinamool Congress leaders who are neck-dip in corruption,” he said.

  • The GOP’s newest culture war target: College diversity programs

The GOP’s newest culture war target: College diversity programs

    [ad_1]

“We are not going to back down to the woke mob, and we will expose the scams they are trying to push onto students across the country,” said DeSantis, who held a roundtable this month on what he called divisive concepts. “Florida students will receive an education, not a political indoctrination.”

Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott also stepped into this fight, issuing a directive last month instructing public universities across the state to stop considering DEI statements in their hiring practices. GOP-controlled statehouses in Iowa, Missouri and elsewhere are also scrutinizing higher education diversity initiatives, and legislation has been introduced in at least a dozen states aimed at cutting DEI spending and rewriting hiring guidelines at colleges and universities.

DEI programs have existed for decades across school and government with the goal of both increasing the share of people on campus or in the office from communities historically discriminated against, such as women and religious minorities, and making them feel accepted once they arrive.

“In American higher education, we have been working to make campuses diverse and inclusive for well over 100 years,” said Ted Mitchell, president of the American Council on Education, which represents the nation’s colleges and universities. “This is not about teaching white students to be ashamed or teaching Black students to hate white students. This is about making campuses inclusive communities where everybody can prosper.”

But after corporate and educational efforts to supercharge diversity, equity and inclusion programs following the public outrage over George Floyd’s police killing in 2020, many Republicans believe the initiatives promote exclusion and division based on race, a critique that has resonated with conservative voters. It’s a flurry of legislative and executive activity that is advancing as the U.S. Supreme Court also seems poised to ban the use of affirmative action in college admissions later this year.

“It’s good for universities to aspire to be welcoming places to people from many backgrounds, many different experiences, many different perspectives,” said Jay Greene, a senior research fellow at The Heritage Foundation’s Center for Education Policy. “But that very good thing has mutated into something not good. … Simply because we like the word diversity and we like the word inclusion … doesn’t mean that DEI initiatives are good.”

According to Greene, GOP lawmakers are looking to dismantle DEI in at least three different ways: striking down the use of diversity statements used for hiring or promotions, ending required social curriculum, and eliminating what they call the “DEI bureaucracy” — practitioners on campus in charge of facilitating diversity efforts. But it does not mean conservatives are against diversity, he said.

Colleges and practitioners, however, argue that these measures could stifle academic freedom and halt diversity efforts needed to ensure a welcoming environment for students, especially those from marginalized backgrounds.

“I don’t use the acronym D-E-I any longer because it’s been conflated with something that has been weaponized against the breadth and the depth of the work that’s being done on campus communities,” said Paulette Granberry Russell, president of National Association Diversity Officers and Higher Education. “I don’t believe that there is a deep understanding of what this might mean to campuses.”

Granberry Russell, whose group is composed of diversity practitioners, scholars and researchers at universities, said her members are concerned about how the rollback of these initiatives will affect their jobs. They question what programming and professional development they could have, and what message these practices will send to prospective students and job applicants.

Abbott, who barred universities state agencies from using DEI statements, said in an interview with Hearst Newspapers: “Diversity is something that we support.”

But in a February letter first reported by the Texas Tribune, Abbott’s chief of staff Gardner Pate wrote that using the statements during the hiring process violates federal and state employment laws. Public colleges in the state were quick to abide by it.

Texas A&M University announced this month that it would no longer have diversity statements when hiring. University of Houston Chancellor Renu Khator soon followed, saying her institution “will not support or use DEI statements or factors in hiring or promotion anywhere in the University of Houston System” to stay in compliance with state law.

The University of Texas Board of Regents also paused any new policies that promote diversity, equity and inclusion and are seeking a report on current policies across their campuses. While UT still strives for diversity on campus, Board Chair Kevin Eltife said “certain DEI efforts have strayed from the original intent to now imposing requirements and actions that, rightfully so, has raised the concerns of our policymakers around those efforts on campuses across our entire state.”

Greene, of the Heritage Foundation, said using diversity statements in hiring, promotions or assessing faculty tenure “seems to bear a lot of resemblance to loyalty oaths that were required during the McCarthy era where people had to declare that they weren’t communists.”

In Georgia, Republicans lawmakers are also looking to ban DEI in education hiring practices through a bill dubbed the “End Political Litmus Tests In Education Act,” SB 261. The Missouri legislature is considering a similar measure to ban public colleges from requiring applicants to submit DEI statements.

This month, South Carolina lawmakers sparred over eliminating funding for DEI efforts from the state’s public colleges during its broader budget negotiations. In Iowa, the Board of Regents announced that it is taking on a comprehensive review of all DEI programs and efforts and pausing any new ones at the University of Iowa, Iowa State University and the University of Northern Iowa.

Meanwhile in Florida, lawmakers advanced the wide-ranging measure sought by DeSantis that would bar universities and colleges from spending on programs linked to diversity, equity and inclusion or critical race theory.

The legislation also calls on the state university system’s Board of Governors to direct schools to remove any major or minor of study that is “based on or otherwise utilizes pedagogical methodology” tied to critical race theory. This includes Critical Race Theory, Critical Race Studies, Critical Ethnic Studies, Radical Feminist Theory, Radical Gender Theory, Queer Theory, Critical Social Justice, or Intersectionality.

Critical race theory is an analytical framework for examining how racism has been systemic to American society and institutions after centuries of slavery and Jim Crow. Many conservatives use critical race theory as shorthand for a broader critique of how race and social issues are being taught in the K-12 education system.

The bill would also weaken or eliminate the roles created at institutions to support students. Recognizing the needs of students based on how they identify, and providing academic and social support is a key role diversity practitioners have long taken on in higher education, Granberry Russell said.

“If we go back to a time when those needs were ignored, not specifically addressed, not tailored to what those students’ needs are,” she said, “what does that represent? You’re not welcome here.”

Andrew Atterbury contributed to this report.

  • No Teachers, No Classwork: A Crisis in A Peripheral College Explained

No Teachers, No Classwork: A Crisis in A Peripheral College Explained

    [ad_1]

    by Tawseef Bashir Mir

SRINAGAR: Students of Government Women’s Degree College, Sopore are facing an acute shortage of teachers, a crisis which has brought their academic progress to a standstill.

    GDCW Sopore KL Image
Government Degree College for Women Sopore

Out of the required 33 positions that the college requires, only 11 permanent faculty members are present. The college has not renewed contracts for or hired new contractual lecturers to make up for the staffing needs.

The College’s Arts faculty has less than one-fourth of the required teaching staff.

Despite several years of pleas from students and college administration alike, the issue is long impending.

The students had also staged a protest in the college premises on Monday last complaining about understaffing, mostly in the arts faculty of the college. The students took to social media to state their concerns regarding their studies having to suffer due to a lack of faculty.

“The matter has been taken up with the Director of Colleges and the Principal Secretary as well,” Principal GWDC, Sopore, Bashir Ahmad Parray said, confirming the lack of adequate staff. They have verbally assured swift action in the matter. We are awaiting further progress.”

However, the students from the college alleged oversight of their concerns from the administration. “We have not studied even a single word since February 15 due to a lack of staff. Our careers are getting ruined,” a student from BA History, second semester said. “Certain departments are being handled by single personnel. The arts faculty is the one which is suffering the most due to this shortage of teachers.”

“The college has only one English teacher who teaches both the faculties (Arts and Science) throughout all semesters. There is no teacher for history, economics, political science, and such major subjects. We used to have contractual lecturers but the administration hasn’t even hired them for the current session,” the student added.

“We talked to our Principal but he said there wasn’t much he could do about the matter as it is out of his hands to hire the staff. He is trying though,” another student, enrolled in BSc second semester, said. “We wanted to use social media to voice our concerns but nothing came out of it as well.”

Director of Colleges, Yasmeen Ashai also admitted the problem. “An advertisement has been issued regarding the hiring of contractual staff. We have sent a number of contractual teachers to the said college to teach minor subjects and the application evaluation process for the posts of major subjects is underway,” Ms Ashai said. “Due to the applications being in bulk, the hiring process is taking time but the process is already underway.”

However, students insist that no teaching faculty has been hired for the current session. “As per our knowledge, the last permanent teacher hired was way back in 2016. Contractual staff is a come-and-go trend but even they haven’t been hired for the current session,” a group of students said.

Besides, the students also voiced their concerns regarding transport and college infrastructural issues. “Our College is situated at an off-road location. We have to travel from far-flung areas and then walk long distances from the bus stand to reach the college,” one student said. “The two buses provided by the government aren’t functional. There are no drivers.”

The college buildings and other infrastructure are in a near-dilapidated state, the students alleged. “We have repeatedly taken up this matter with the principal but to no regard. Maybe the issue lies in this being a college for women,” one student commented.

DC Baramulla Dr Syed Sehrish Asgar had taken note of the matter regarding the college being understaffed and in a notice, directed the Principal Government Women’s Degree College Sopore to resolve the matter immediately. She had also ordered the principal to communicate the progress to her office. It was not immediately known if the college management has responded to the order or sought her help in addressing the issues.

Established in 2005, the college operated from the premises of Government Boys Degree College, Sopore till 2010, when it got its own building. Currently, it has around 1100 students on its rolls.

Chhattisgarh: Student falls to death while filming Instagram reel at Bilaspur college

    [ad_1]

Bilaspur: A 20-year-old man fell to death while filming for an Instagram reel with his friends at a college in Chhattisgarh’s Bilaspur district, police said on Saturday.

The incident, which took place at Government Science College in Bilaspur town on Friday afternoon, was captured by the deceased man’s friends on their mobile phones, an official said.

As per preliminary information, Ashutosh Sao, a first-year Bachelor of Science student, had gone to the terrace of the ground-plus-one-storey college building with five of his friends to shoot reels for Instagram.

Sao jumped the boundary wall of the terrace and climbed onto a window slab to get filmed, but he slipped and fell from a height of 20 feet, the official said.

The man sustained head injuries and died on the spot, he said.
The police have registered an accidental death report and further probe is underway, he said.

Bilaspur Superintendent of Police Santosh Singh posted a clip of Sao and his friends planning to make reel on the terrace just before the incident, with a cautionary message appealing to people to avoid taking such risks.

In the video, Sao is seen jumping on the window slab and is heard saying, “If I jump from here to there (other window shed) I will not be able return.” To this, his friend is heard saying, “You will (come back). I am making a video.”

Taking to Twitter, the SP said, “While making Instagram reels with friends in Bilaspur Science College campus, a youth (in Orange T-shirt) fell. He could not be saved. Investigation is on into the incident…Alertness is necessary at all times #Safetyfirst.”

  • Telangana: Inter board to moderate junior college advertisements

Telangana: Inter board to moderate junior college advertisements

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Telangana State Board of Intermediate Education (TSBIE) is formatting guidelines in order to moderate advertisements by private intermediate colleges in the state in addition to several other academic regulations that will come into effect from the next academic year.

An eight-member committee from the broad will convene to formulate the guidelines of moderation of advertisement content and other academic issues.

TSBIE will verify the claims of the private colleges before giving a green signal to the advertisements. Same candidates who were top rankers were seen in the advertisements belonging to two or three different colleges claiming them as their students.

Before approving the advertisement the board will check the claims by comparing them with the hall ticket number of the candidate. This set to put an end to the misleading advertisements meant to lure students and parents into taking admissions.

TSBIE secretary and commissioner of Intermediate education Navin Mittal said, “We are not against advertisements but they should not be misleading with multiple corporate junior colleges claiming the same top rank”.

“It has been decided to moderate advertisement content and before the advertisement is issued, the colleges have to get the content approved,” he added.

The Board will also issue regulations on classwork timing and study hours, to ensure that the students are not forced to study for long hours without any recreational activities.

Mittal urged the students and their parents to check the affiliation details of the colleges before seeking admission. He said that the affiliation process for the private colleges will be advanced this year and it will be granted before the announcement of the class 10 board exam results.

Starting from the next academic year biometric system will be made mandatory for the faculty of intermediate colleges, to discourage them from working in more than one private college at the same time. The biometric system will be linked to the board.

Speaking about the digital evaluation of inter exam answer scripts, Mittal said “Two companies, Magnetic Info and Cosyn Limited have come forward in the tenders and further process is underway. I cannot comment whether or not digital on screen evaluation will be taken up from this year.”
