Former United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley and biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy are the only presidential candidates bridging the two gatherings, though the lesser-known Ramaswamy is not yet registering on public polling of the potential 2024 field.

Despite being a nearby resident in Palm Beach, Trump was not invited to the Club’s retreat this week at The Breakers luxury resort. The conservative group has been open in its desire to move beyond Trump, who has responded with harsh criticism for the organization.

But other potential 2024 candidates are attending Club for Growth’s retreat are former Vice President Mike Pence, Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) and New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu, POLITICO has confirmed. Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Rick Scott (R-Fla.), who are not signaling interest in a presidential run next year, are also set to speak to donors.

Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will speak at CPAC, a conference that over the past five years has increasingly aligned itself with Trump and Trumpism. Pompeo and Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin were invited to attend the Club for Growth retreat, but a person familiar with their schedules said they had scheduling conflicts.

As CPAC has remained closely aligned with Trump — the conservative outfit has celebrated Trump’s success in its straw polls while having him return to events throughout the year — the Club for Growth has largely severed ties with the former president.

And while the Club has opened its donor retreat to a slate of prospective candidates not named Trump, the anti-tax organization appears to be putting much of its weight behind DeSantis. The day before Trump announced his presidential campaign in November, the Club for Growth released polling showing the Florida governor leading over Trump by double-digits in early nominating states.

The Club and its president, David McIntosh, have endured a tumultuous relationship with the former president, first opposing him in 2016 before embracing Trump as an ally in the years to follow. McIntosh influenced some of Trump’s high-profile endorsements in the 2022 midterms, though the two men clashed over contentious Senate primaries in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Alabama.

Trump earlier this month referred to the organization as “The Club For NO Growth” and suggested he was fine without their support, posting on his Truth Social website that the group was “an assemblage of political misfits, globalists, and losers.”

“They said I couldn’t win, I did, and won even bigger in 2020, with millions of more votes than ‘16,” Trump continued, then claiming, without evidence, that the “Election was Rigged & Stolen.”

Club for Growth donated last year to DeSantis’ reelection bid, as well as to a super PAC supporting Tim Scott, another potential Trump rival in a 2024 Republican presidential primary.

Haley has also found herself in a complicated relationship with Trump, who appointed her as U.N. ambassador after initially criticizing Trump’s 2016 candidacy. Since then, Haley has cycled through criticism and praise for Trump. She previously said she would not run if Trump sought reelection, though ultimately changed course and has called for a new, younger generation of conservative leadership without directly attacking Trump’s policies.

By making an appearance at both events, Haley and Ramaswamy are attempting to make in-roads with both the pro- and anti-Trump conservative movements as they seek to bolster their name recognition and support ahead of a potentially crowded field in the coming months.

Nachama Soloveichik, an adviser to Haley, said the former South Carolina’s choice to attend both events shows she’s “decisive” and “bringing her message all across the country.” “When others sit on the sidelines, Nikki Haley puts in the work, in Iowa, in New Hampshire, at conservative gatherings,” Soloveichik said in a statement.

  • ‘That could be one of our balloons’: Hobbyist says downed object may belong to amateur club

‘That could be one of our balloons’: Hobbyist says downed object may belong to amateur club

    [ad_1]

    image

U.S. officials still haven’t said what the three objects were, but President Joe Biden said Thursday they were “most likely balloons” connected to either private companies or involving scientific research.

“When I heard that [it was a] silver object with a payload attached to it, that could be one of our balloons,” a member of the Northern Illinois Bottlecap Balloon Brigade told POLITICO in a phone interview. The member was granted anonymity because the group has agreed not to talk to the media.

Government officials have reached out to some of the hobby group’s members, the person said. On Thursday, a spokesperson for the North American Aerospace Defense Command said the FBI had contacted the club but did not provide more details. The FBI did not return a request to comment.

National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby told reporters on Friday that the U.S. can’t confirm reports that the balloon belongs to the club. “We haven’t recovered it so it’s very difficult until you can get your hands on something to be able to tell,” he said. “I mean we all have to accept the possibility that we may not be able to recover it.”

For months, the hobby group tracked its balloon using an antenna attached to the craft, using GPS to estimate where it was. Based on their data, the balloon should have been over Alaska when it went offline.

But hundreds, if not thousands, of objects are floating in that jet stream at any given time, so no one can be sure what was shot down unless you “go through the Yukon and trudge through the snow,” the member said.

“Think about it. We know where the balloon was off the coast of Alaska. We know where it was, if all was well,” the member said. “We know that it didn’t wake up that morning. We know [American forces] shot something down, and the thing they described as having shot down is not inconsistent with what we’re flying out there. So, that’s that.”

Balloons flown by the Northern Illinois Bottlecap Balloon Brigade are no different from the $10 to $15 balloons children buy for parties, the person said. They’re not specifically designed for scientific purposes. The Sidewinder missile used by the Air Force to shoot down the object over the Yukon costs roughly $400,000.

“Unless it has Mickey Mouse ears and F-22 pilots got sharp eyes and can discern that, it’s not clear exactly what you’re looking at. But the point is that it is not at all a huge reach,” to assume it’s the group’s balloon, the member said.

Kirby said the U.S. stands by the decision to shoot down the objects.

“Given the situation we were in, the information available, the recommendation of our military commanders, it was exactly the right thing to do at exactly the right time,” he said.

“And, frankly, given the circumstances in light of what happened with the spy balloon, wouldn’t that be a better outcome, if it turns out that they were in fact, civilian, or recreational use, or weather balloon and therefore benign, which is what the intelligence community thinks,” Kirby added. “Isn’t that a better outcome than to have to … to think about the possibility of greater threats to our national security?”

While it’s unfortunate that the balloon is missing, the person said it’s better for the U.S. to be safe than sorry when it comes to protecting its airspace.

“I’m an American and I don’t want anything bad to happen to our country. If they don’t know, I’d rather that they err in shooting down $100 worth of balloon stuff than have something bad go over Canada or the United States,” the member said, adding that they’re “not angry at all.”

Kelly Garrity, Lee Hudson and Lawrence Ukenye contributed to this report.

  • Club for Growth endorses Scott and dings McConnell

Club for Growth endorses Scott and dings McConnell

    [ad_1]

    20222012 senate francis 3

A spokesman for Club said the group’s super PAC intends to spend on Scott’s behalf in next year’s election, which as of now features no Republican primary opponents. The group spent $60 million on Senate races this past cycle.

The Club for Growth supported Scott in his 2018 Senate campaign and McIntosh praised the Senator as a “proven conservative who has promoted economic growth.” Scott, a former healthcare executive turned Florida governor, narrowly defeated a Democrat in his bid for Senate that year after spending more than $60 million of his own cash. As of now, there are no notable Democratic challengers for his seat.

The dig at McConnell by the Club for Growth comes at a tense moment between the Senate Minority Leader and Scott.

During the 2022 midterms, Scott chaired the National Republican Senatorial Committee, clashing with McConnell throughout the cycle on matters of strategy. A super PAC aligned with McConnell, the Senate Leadership Fund, stepped in to pour $240 million into Senate races last year as the NRSC’s resources were strained. But they eventually cut off funding for poorly performing Republican nominees in Arizona and New Hampshire. Republicans ultimately lost a seat during an election in which they were favored to win back the Senate majority, as Scott, McConnell and their allies each pointed fingers over whose strategy was to blame.

But the persistent clashes have been over Scott’s campaign season proposal to require Congress to reapprove federal programs, including Medicare and Social Security, every five years. McConnell has sought to distance the party from the idea and even recently said he believed Scott’s own election would be endangered because of it.

After the midterms, Scott announced he would challenge McConnell as GOP leader — which he did unsuccessfully. McIntosh, in an interview at the time, said he did not foresee McConnell losing the position, but predicted “a sea change in terms of how much power he has as the leader.”

A spokesperson for McConnell did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Despite no current threat in his 2024 reelection bid, Scott has already begun to build up a campaign operation, bringing on additional campaign staff in Florida and ramping up his political activity in the state. Next week, Scott has a series of campaign events planned, followed by small rallies and roundtables in March.

The Club for Growth’s endorsement comes as Scott is poised to also have the backing of SLF and the NRSC, which have no plans to oppose his reelection bid, both groups said.

Scott in a statement to POLITICO said he is “proud” to have the Club’s endorsement.

“The establishment in Washington has failed and they’re the only ones who don’t realize it,” Scott said. “We need more champions in Washington who are willing to fight the status quo and work to rescue America from the failures of Joe Biden, Democrats, and the Washington establishment.”

Saudi Arabia to host FIFA Club World Cup 2023

    [ad_1]

Riyadh: The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s Football Association announced, on Tuesday, the approval of the International Federation of Football Associations (FIFA) for the Kingdom’s request to host the Club World Cup 2023.

The 2023 tournament will take place in Kingdom for first time from December 12 to December 22.

Thus, the Kingdom will be the sixth host country for the FIFA Club World Cup since its inception in 2000.

“With regard to the 2023 FIFA Club World Cup, which will be held under the current system with the participation of 7 clubs, the FIFA Council unanimously appointed the Saudi Football Association as the host of the tournament from December 12 to 22, 2023,” said a FIFA statement on the sidelines of its council meeting in Zurich, Switzerland.

Saudi Arabia has been active in hosting tournaments and major sporting events, as hosting the FIFA Club World Cup for the first time comes a few days after it was announced that it would host the 2027 AFC Asian Cup for the first time in its history, in addition to hosting the Spanish and Italian Super Championships.

As per media reports, Saudi Arabia plans to host the FIFA World Cup 2030 alongside Egypt and Greece, and is preparing a strong propaganda campaign to be announced soon.

The Kingdom has previously hosted many football events several times, including the Italian and Spanish Super Cups, and it also won the hosting of the 2027 Asian Nations Cup and the 2034 Asian Games.

Press Club of India condemns I-T surveys at BBC office in Delhi, Mumbai

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Press Club of India (PCI) has strongly condemned the income tax “surveys” at the office of the BBC in Delhi and Mumbai on Tuesday.

In a statement, PCI said, “The ‘surveys’ are part of a series of attacks on the media by government agencies in recent times, especially against those sections of the media that the government perceives is hostile to it and critical of the ruling establishment.

“It is deeply unfortunate as this latest instance appears to be a clear cut case of vendetta, coming within weeks of a documentary aired by the BBC on the Gujarat riots.”

The PCI said that the documentary, which appears to be the immediate provocation for the raids, has already been banned on YouTube and other social media platforms.

“We are deeply concerned and distressed that such an action on an international broadcasting network will damage the reputation and image of India as the largest democracy in the world. We appeal to the government to restrain its agencies from misusing their powers in order to intimidate the media and put curbs on the freedom of the press,” the statement read.

  • US’s National Press Club asks Indian govt to cancel ban on BBC documentary

US’s National Press Club asks Indian govt to cancel ban on BBC documentary

    [ad_1]

Washington: The National Press Club (NPC), a leading media organisation in Washington, has strongly condemned the Indian government’s move pertaining to the censorship of the BBC Documentary ‘India: The Modi Question’.

The NPC statement, released here on Tuesday, identifies the Indian government’s suppression of the Modi-critical documentary as part of a larger threat Prime Minister Narendra Modi poses to Indian democracy.

The organisation said that the government of India should let people decide whether to watch or not.

“India should be proud that it is the largest democracy in the world, but it cannot hold on to that identity if it continues to erode press freedom, persecute journalists, and suppress news that holds a mirror up to its shortcomings,” said the NPC president Eileen O’Reilly.

“Since Modi came to power, we have watched with frustration and disappointment as his government time and time again has suppressed the right of its citizens to a free and independent news media,” she said in a press release.

“The BBC is one of the most respected news sources in the world and is known for its high editorial standards. We also demand in the strongest terms the government stop its persecution of journalists and suppression of press freedom in India,” said the NPC president.

After the BBC aired a two-part documentary, the Indian government in the past two weeks, used its emergency powers to ban it from being aired in the country.

The Modi-led government also forced Twitter and YouTube to block the documentary in India under the 2021 information technology law, which the National Press Club has previously criticized.

The BBC documentary examines PM Modi’s role in the 2002 Gujarat riots when he was chief minister of the western Indian state, of Gujarat.

During the riots, thousands of predominantly Muslim Indians were killed, many were raped and Muslim establishments were set on fire.

The Indian Supreme Court exonerated Modi in 2012 of wrongdoing but the documentary notes the British Foreign Office produced an unpublished report claiming Modi was ‘directly responsible’ for enabling the impunity of violence that led to the killings.

“NPC’s stand against the Modi regime’s brutal censorship campaign joins a chorus of condemnations from the global press and democratic freedom organizations, signalling growing international recognition of the grave threat Modi poses to Muslims, religious minorities, a free press, and democracy itself”, read their press note.

  • Sheriff: Suspect in dance club shooting killed self in van

Sheriff: Suspect in dance club shooting killed self in van

    [ad_1]

    aptopix california shooting 00441

“I still have questions in my mind, which is: What was the motive for this shooter? Did he have a mental illness? Was he a domestic violence abuser? How did he gets these guns and was it through legal means or not?” Congresswoman Judy Chu said.

Earlier Sunday, law enforcement officials swarmed and entered the van after surrounding it for for hours before going in. A person’s body appeared to be slumped over the wheel and was later removed from the vehicle.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna previously released photos of an Asian man who was believed to be the suspect.

The manhunt came after the gunman killed 10 people at a ballroom dance studio late Saturday amid Lunar New Years celebrations in the predominantly Asian American community of Monterey Park. He likely tried and failed to target a second dance hall, authorities said.

The van was found in Torrance, another community home to many Asian Americans, about 22 miles from that second location.

The shooting sent a wave of fear through Asian American communities in the Los Angeles area and cast a shadow over Lunar New Year festivities around the country. Other cities sent extra officers to watch over the celebrations.

“The community was in fear thinking that they should not go to any events because there was an active shooter,” Chu said. She added that she wants residents to now feel secure. “Feel safe,” she said to residents during a press conference late Sunday. “You are no longer in danger.”

Luna said the shooting at the Star Ballroom Dance Studio in Monterey Park left five women and five men dead and wounded another 10 people. Then 20 to 30 minutes later, a man with a gun entered the Lai Lai Ballroom in nearby Alhambra.

The suspect entered the Alhambra club with a gun, and people wrested the weapon away from him before he fled, Luna said.

Hours earlier, Luna said authorities were looking for a white van after witnesses reported seeing the suspect flee from Alhambra in such a vehicle.

Members of a SWAT team entered the van a short time later and looked through its contents before walking away. It was unclear what they found.

The massacre was the nation’s fifth mass killing this month. It was also the deadliest attack since May 24, when 21 people were killed in an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas.

Monterey Park is a city of about 60,000 people on the eastern edge of Los Angeles and is composed mostly of Asian immigrants from China or first-generation Asian Americans. The shooting happened in the heart of its downtown where red lanterns decorated the streets for the Lunar New Year festivities. A police car was parked near a large banner that proclaimed “Happy Year of the Rabbit!”

The celebration in Monterey Park is one of California’s largest. Two days of festivities, which have been attended by as many as 100,000 people in past years, were planned. But officials canceled Sunday’s events following the shooting.

Tony Lai, 35, of Monterey Park was stunned when he came out for his early morning walk to learn that the noises he heard in the night were gunshots.

“I thought maybe it was fireworks. I thought maybe it had something to do with Lunar New Year,” he said. “And we don’t even get a lot of fireworks here. It’s weird to see this. It’s really safe here. We’re right in the middle of the city, but it’s really safe.”

Wynn Liaw, 57, who lives about two blocks from the Monterey Park studio, said she was shocked that such a crime would happen, especially during New Year’s celebrations.

“Chinese people, they consider Chinese New Year very, very special” — a time when “you don’t do anything that will bring bad luck the entire year,” she said.

She took a picture of the activity outside the studio to send to relatives and friends in China “to let them know how crazy the U.S. is becoming with all these mass shootings, even in the New Year.”

An Associated Press/USA Today database on mass killings in the U.S. shows that 2022 was one of the nation’s worst years with 42 such attacks — the second-highest number since the creation of the tracker in 2006. The database defines a mass killing as four people killed, not including the perpetrator.

The latest violence comes two months after five people were killed at a Colorado Springs nightclub.

President Joe Biden and Attorney General Merrick Garland were briefed on the situation, aides said. Biden said he and first lady Jill Biden were thinking of those killed and wounded, and he directed federal authorities to support the investigation.

The shooting occurred at Star Ballroom Dance Studio, a few blocks from city hall on Monterey Park’s main thoroughfare of Garvey Avenue, which is dotted with strip malls of small businesses whose signs are in both English and Chinese. Cantonese and Mandarin are both widely spoken, Chinese holidays are celebrated and Chinese films are screened regularly in the city.

The business offered dance lessons from tango to rumba to the fox trot, and rented its space for events. On Saturday, its website said, it was hosting an event called “Star Night” from 8 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.

    UPDATE:
MONTEREY PARK, Calif. — Authorities say the suspect in a California dance club shooting that left 10 dead has shot and killed himself.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said Sunday the man killed himself as police officers closed in on the van he used to flee the scene of an attempted second shooting.

Luna identified the suspect at 72-year-old Huu Can Tran.

He said no other suspects are at large.

    EARLIER TEXT:

MONTEREY PARK, Calif. — Law enforcement officials swarmed and entered a white van Sunday afternoon that officials suspect was driven by a gunman who opened fire on a Southern California ballroom dance studio, killing 10 people and wounding 10 more.

Police surrounded the van with tactical vehicles and bomb squad trucks for hours before going in. A person’s body appeared to be slumped over the wheel, but authorities did not immediately identify the person in the van.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna previously released photos of an Asian man who was believed to be the suspect, but he did not release the man’s name.

The manhunt came after a gunman killed 10 people at a ballroom dance studio late Saturday amid Lunar New Years celebrations in the predominantly Asian American community of Monterey Park. He likely tried and failed to target a second dance hall, authorities said.

The van was found in Torrance, another community home to many Asian Americans, about 22 miles (34.5 kilometers) from that second location.

The shooting sent a wave of fear through Asian American communities in the Los Angeles area and cast a shadow over Lunar New Year festivities around the country. Other cities sent extra officers to watch over the celebrations.

Luna said the shooting at the Star Ballroom Dance Studio in Monterey Park left five women and five men dead and wounded another 10 people. Then 20 to 30 minutes later, a man with a gun entered the Lai Lai Ballroom in nearby Alhambra.

Authorities believe the two events are connected. They offered no details about a possible motive.

The suspect entered the Alhambra club with a gun, and people wrested the weapon away from him before he fled, Luna said.

Hours earlier, Luna said authorities were looking for a white van after witnesses reported seeing the suspect flee from Alhambra in such a vehicle.

“We believe there is a person inside of that vehicle. We don’t know their condition, but we’re going to handle that in safest manner that we possibly can and try and identify that person. Could it be our suspect? Possibly,” Luna said.

In response to a question, Luna said it was possible that the person barricaded in van was dead.

Members of a SWAT team entered the van a short time later and looked through its contents before walking away. It was unclear what they found.

Authorities said Sunday they know the suspect’s name but declined to release it because it could complicate their ability to apprehend him. But they did release a photo showing an Asian man wearing glasses and a winter hat.

The sheriff declined to say what type of gun was recovered in Alhambra. He said investigators believe the gun used in Monterey Park was not an assault rifle.

The business offered dance lessons from tango to rumba to the fox trot, and rented its space for events. On Saturday, its website said, it was hosting an event called “Star Night” from 8 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.
