  • Babar Azam Closes In On Breaking T20I World Record – Kashmir News

    [ad_1]

Babar Azam Closes In On Breaking T20I World Record: Pakistan all-format skipper Babar Azam is just two wins away from breaking another record in the shortest format of the game.

Babar will have the opportunity to etch his name as the captain with the most number of wins if his side trumps New Zealand in the fifth T20I at Pindi Cricket Stadium on monday (tomorrow).

Currently, Babar is the joint-holder of this record with Afghanistan’s Asghar Afghan (42) and is behind England’s Eoin Morgan (44) by two matches.

If the 28-year-old, who has captained the Green Shirts in 69 T20 Internationals, wins tomorrow’s match, he will be just one match away from breaking the record.

Under his captaincy, Pakistan reached the semifinals of two successive T20 World Cups — 2021 and 2022 — and finished as runner-ups in the latter.

During the second T20I against the Black Caps, Babar scored his third T20I century at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.

Babar is close to breaking the record of Indian cricketer Rohit Sharma, who currently tops the International Cricket Council (ICC) list with four centuries.

He is the only Pakistan batter with more than one ton in the format. The hundred puts Babar close to the top of the list of batters with the most T20I tons.

During the match, Babar managed to score his half-century on merely 36 balls and then slammed 51 runs off the next 22 deliveries, including 36 runs off the last three overs.

Babar smashed James Neesham for two fours and a six in the last over, completing his 100 runs off the final ball of the innings.

Babar Azam closes in on India skipper Rohit Sharma with third hundred

    [ad_1]

Lahore, April 16: Babar Azam notched up a fine T20I hundred in his 101st T20I to put Pakistan in the driving seat after he opted to bat first on winning the toss.

The Pakistan skipper put on a 99-run opening stand with Mohammad Rizwan, before the wicketkeeper was dismissed in the 11th over of the innings. Matt Henry, fresh off a hat-trick last game, sent back Fakhar Zaman next ball to dent Pakistan further. Pakistan went on to post 192/4 in their 20 overs.

Babar, however, continued in the same vein, getting to his half-century off 36 balls. He stepped on the pedal thereafter, slamming 51 runs off the next 22 balls, including 36 runs off the last three overs.

He completed his century off the final ball of the innings, smashing James Neesham for two fours and a six in the last over.

The 58-ball ton was Babar’s third T20I ton. Notably, he is the only Pakistan batter with more than one hundred in the format. The hundred puts Babar close to the top of the list of batters with most T20I tons.

Rohit Sharma with four T20I hundreds tops the list with five other batters, including Babar now, on three hundreds. Notably, both Babar and Rohit have 33 scores of fity or more in T20Is, second only to Virat Kohli, who has 38 such scores.

Pakistan posted 192/4 on board with Babar remaining unbeaten on 101. He shared an unbeaten 87-run partnership for the fifth wicket with Iftikhar Ahmed (33 not out off 19 balls) to lead Pakistan’s surge in the late overs.

    Brief scores:

Pakistan 192/4 in 20 overs (Babar azam 101, Mohammad Rizwan 50, Iftikhar Ahmed 33 not out; Matt Henry 2-29).–(IANS)

Kalakshetra closes college till April 6 in wake of protests by students

    [ad_1]

Chennai: The Kalakshetra, an iconic institution here, has announced closure of its college till April 6, in the wake of protests by students against alleged sexual harassment and misconduct on the campus.

Students of the Rukmini Devi College of Fine Arts, being run by the Kalakshetra on its campus, resorted to the protest at the “tapovan”, the prayer space at the entrance of the college on Thursday demanding justice. They alleged harassment by a senior faculty and sought appropriate action against him.

As the allegations surfaced a few days ago, chairperson of National Commission of Women (NCW) Rekha Sharma, visited Kalakshetra on Wednesday to enquire about the allegations.

The principal announced that the college will be closed till April 6 from Thursday evening.

“Rukmini Devi College of Fine Arts will remain closed from 5.15 pm today to April 6. All inmates are requested to vacate the hostel within two days with immediate effect,” he said in a circular.

Exams scheduled on the above days have been postponed and new dates would be announced in due course, the Principal added.

Meanwhile, Kalakshetra in a statement said the Chairman and the Governing Board is fully appraised of protests and grievances and all steps would be taken to ensure that no person who is involved in any unsavory activity in the Foundation will be spared.

“There have been some allegations which we are considering. Some of the students of the Foundation have been protesting in our campus.
The Director and the Deputy director from administration have spoken to the students taking into consideration the sentiments and grievances of the students.

“On 29.03.2023, the Chairperson of the National Commission for Women (NCW) had also visited our campus and made enquiries about the allegations. The Foundation had already sought explanation from the persons against whom some allegations have been made and on receipt of their explanation, the Chairman and the Governing Board will consider the appropriate action that has to be taken in accordance with its Rules and Regulations and in conformity with law.”

“The Chairman and the Governing Board is fully appraised of protests and grievances and all steps will be taken to ensure that no person who is involved in any unsavory activity in the Foundation will be spared,” the statement said.

Carnatic musician and writer T M Krishna called upon the Kalakshetra management to take necessary action to address the “very serious complaints.”

“I am writing to you regarding the complaints of sexual harassment and toxicity in the Kalakshetra environment that has been raised over the past few months,” he said in an open letter to the college principal requesting for action.

  • SC closes petition seeking to ban Zoom app

SC closes petition seeking to ban Zoom app

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday closed a PIL seeking a ban on the use of the Zoom application over security and privacy concerns.

Senior advocate Arvind Datar contended before a bench headed by justice Sanjiv Khanna that the Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology had found nothing wrong in the usage of the application.

Datar further contended that many use Zoom and the petition against it does not survive. He pointed out that the concerned ministry had said there is nothing wrong in using Zoom, and queried why only target us and not WebEx etc?

The petition was filed by one Harsh Chugh, who had sought a ban on the use of Zoom for official and personal purposes. The petitioner had argued that the software gives rise to several privacy and security concerns.

After hearing Datar’s submissions, the bench, also comprising justice M.M. Sundresh, closed the proceedings in the matter. The top court also declined to entertain an intervention application to place the additional documents in the matter.

During the hearing, the petitioner’s counsel contended that the government had issued certain notifications that Zoom shouldn’t be used and further added that let the government say that Zoom is good to use.

The bench said it has considered the minutes of the meeting of the National Security Council Secretariat held in December 2020, regarding the security features of Zoom, VC platform, and nothing survives in the petition in view of this document.

The plea had also sought directions to the government to carry out an exhaustive technical study into the security threats posed by the use of the app.

  • Sensex rebounds 377 pts, Nifty closes above 17,850 as RBI slows down rate hike

Sensex rebounds 377 pts, Nifty closes above 17,850 as RBI slows down rate hike

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Benchmark Sensex rebounded 377 points while Nifty closed above the 17,850 level on buying in IT, financial and oil stocks after the RBI slowed down the pace of interest rate hikes on Wednesday.

Ending its two-day slide, the 30-share BSE Sensex rose by 377.75 points or 0.63 per cent to close at 60,663.79 with 24 of its constituents posting gains.

The broader Nifty of the NSE spurted by 150.20 points or 0.85 per cent to settle at 17,871.70, riding on a rally in Adani Enterprises, Adani Ports and HDFC Life. The index opened higher and gained further to test the crucial hurdle at 17,900 in the day. Buying in index majors Reliance Industries, Infosys and TCS played a key role in the rebound.

Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services said, “Bulls took charge of the markets as the RBI’s MPC meeting delivered a smaller rate hike in line with market expectations. The RBI has taken a more optimistic view on domestic growth by increasing the GDP forecast while cautiously keeping CPI inflation at 5.3 per cent for FY24”.

US Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell signalling that a strong jobs report would not by itself sway its stance on interest rate hikes also eased concerns over a sharp increase in interest rates.

Among Sensex stocks, Bajaj Finance rose the most by 3.14 per cent. Ultratech Cement, Reliance Industries, Infosys, Wipro, HCL Tech, TCS, Bajaj Finserve, Tata Motors, Tech Mahindra, Titan and Maruti were among the major gainers.

L&T declined the most by 1.62 per cent, followed by Bharti Airtel, Axis Bank, Kotak Bank and Hindustan Unilever.

Shares of most of Adani group companies, hit by allegations of stock manipulation and accounting fraud by a US short seller, rallied after rating agencies allayed fears over debt taken by the group entities.

Adani Enterprises rallied for a second day, closing sharply higher by 19.76 per cent after hitting the upper circuit limit.

Adani Ports & SEZ also rose for the second day gaining 8.34 per cent. Adani Transmission rebounded by 5 per cent, Adani Wilmar by 4.99 per cent, and Adani Power by 4.99 per cent. However, Adani Green and Adani Total Gas closed lower by over 4 per cent.

Meanwhile, the Reserve Bank of India slowed the pace of interest-rate increases for the second straight time when it on Wednesday expectedly increased borrowing costs by 25 basis points.

The RBI also projected retail inflation to ease to 5.3 per cent in the next fiscal from 6.5 per cent this year on assumptions of lower imported inflation. It also upped its GDP growth estimate to 7 per cent from 6.8 per cent for FY23 and pegged the growth at 6.4 per cent for the next fiscal.

Industry experts said that the 25 basis points hike in key policy rate was in line with expectations, and hopefully is the last in the current cycle of the rate increase, which started in May 2022 in view of rising inflation.

Madan Sabnavis, Chief Economist, Bank of Baroda, said the major takeaway is that there will be a prolonged pause for sure before any further action is taken by the RBI and will be data-driven.

Ajit Mishra, VP – Technical Research, Religare Broking Ltd said, “Markets resumed recovery after two days of subdued move and gained nearly a per cent, supported by upbeat global cues”.

In the broader market, BSE Midcap spurted by 245 points or 1 per cent while the Smallcap advanced 0.76 per cent or 212.88 points.

Among sectoral indices, BSE Commodities rose by 2.28 per cent, BSE IT by 1.51 per cent, BSE Healthcare by 1.2 per cent, BSE Metal by 1.04 per cent, and BSE Teck by 1.09 per cent. Among losers, Telecom declined by 0.43 per cent and Capital Goods by 0.33 per cent.

Shares were mixed in Asia on Wednesday after US stocks rallied following comments by the Federal Reserve chair.

Hong Kong, Sydney and Seoul rose while Tokyo and Shanghai declined. US futures edged lower while oil prices were little changed.

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were net sellers in the capital market on Tuesday as they offloaded shares worth Rs 2,559.96 crore, according to exchange data.

  • CBI court in Jammu ‘closes’ Yasin Malik’s right to cross-examine witnesses

CBI court in Jammu ‘closes’ Yasin Malik’s right to cross-examine witnesses

    [ad_1]

Jammu: A special CBI court on Monday closed banned JKLF chief Yasin Malik’s right to cross-examine a prime witness after he refused to do so through video conferencing.

Currently serving a life sentence in Delhi’s Tihar Jail for terror funding, Malik had demanded that he should be allowed to cross-examine witnesses physically in the Jammu court.

CBI counsel Monika Kohli said that when the judge asked Malik on Monday whether he would like to examine V.K. Sharma, a prime witness in the case, he refused and reiterated that he would like to physically question Sharma in court.

“Following his refusal to cross-examine Sharma through virtual mode, the court closed his right to cross-examine Sharma,” Kohli said.

It must be mentioned here that the prime witness Sharma had identified Malik before the examiner-in-chief of the court as well as the CBI as one of the militants involved in the January 25, 1990 killing of four IAF personnel on the outskirts of Srinagar.

Kohli informed the court that the Union Home Ministry had passed an order barring Malik from moving out of Tihar jail for one year from December 22, 2022 because of pending NIA cases against him.

Malik has been charge-sheeted in the case along with six others. The charges were framed against the accused in 2020, 20 years after CBI filed the charge-sheet before a designated TADA court in Jammu.

While four IAF personnel were killed on the spot, nearly 40 others were injured in that firing incident.
