Die-hard Trump fans make it clear: They want DeSantis

    [ad_1]

“Donald needs to retire and I love Donald,” said Nita Spatola, who was wearing a DeSantis for governor cap and a rhinestone pin that said “DeSantis.” “This is the man who is going to change the direction of this country.”

Steve Watts offered his own blunt assessment about why he prefers DeSantis over Trump: “The former president is a too big for his britches. He thinks his stuff doesn’t stink.”

DeSantis’ tour is part of a larger promotional push that has him heading to key early primary states, all before he’s even announced whether he’ll run for president in 2024. The busy schedule included five straight days of media appearances on Fox News and other conservative media outlets as well as an upcoming two-city tour of Texas, a visit to the Reagan Library in California this Sunday and a jaunt to Alabama, where he will be the keynote speaker at the Alabama GOP winter dinner next week.

That will be followed by a visit to Iowa just three days after he’s scheduled to give his fifth State of the State speech in Tallahassee. DeSantis will stop next week in Davenport and Des Moines, the governor’s political operation confirmed on Thursday. The March 10 trek was first reported by the Des Moines Register.

Other media outlets have also reported that he plans to visit Nevada and New Hampshire, two other early primary states.

Only Trump and Nikki Haley, the former South Carolina governor and U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, have formally entered the 2024 race. But DeSantis’ whirlwind cross-country tour is positioning him well if — or when — he enters the 2024 competition possibly as soon as the spring.

DeSantis, speaking on Fox News, brushed aside questions on whether this promotional tour is a prelude to a presidential campaign, instead saying that he wrote the book — where he takes aim at Washington, D.C. and “elites” in the media, academia and medical professions — as a how-to manual for other states to follow.

But the Florida residents who waited for DeSantis in Jacksonville Beach on Thursday morning said they showed up so they could meet a potential future president.

“I hate losing him as a governor. But our country is much more dire shape than our state,” said Matt Kinsey.

But the governor remains a polarizing figure, and not everyone who showed up to Books-A-Million was there to cheer DeSantis on.

One lone protester held up a sign that read: “Hey Ronnie, hands off New College,” a rebuke to DeSantis’ decision to put in place new trustees who want to turn the small liberal arts college into a more conservative-leaning school.

And during a Tuesday book signing near the GOP enclave of The Villages in central Florida, a small contingent of Trump supporters led by far-right activist Laura Loomer caused a stir when they posted video of a security guard ordering them to leave the area.

Casey Jones, who was waiting early Thursday afternoon for DeSantis to speak at the Fraternal Office of Police lodge in Jacksonville, said he was initially torn about whether to back DeSantis or Trump.

But Jones, who was wearing a red shirt that said “DeSantis Airlines” — a reference to the governor’s controversial decision to fly migrants from Texas to Martha’s Vineyard — said he was disappointed after Trump took what he called “potshots at our governor.”

“DeSantis has couth,” said Jones. “DeSantis isn’t going to get all muddy and in the dirt like Trump is.”

During his Jacksonville speech, DeSantis called his nearly 20-point reelection victory last November proof of a “realignment” in Florida politics and that his policies appealed to more than just dedicated Republicans. He noted that he flipped Democratic bastions such as Palm Beach County and Miami-Dade County.

“You cannot win by 1.5 million votes and win all those counties with just Republicans,” DeSantis said.

He added: “At the end of day, Florida has shown there’s a strong majority of Americans out there who understand that some of this stuff has gone off the rails. We need a strong dose of common sense. We need to restore sanity to this country.”

Ram Charan, Upasana clear the air: Their baby will be born in India

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Contrary to speculations, power couple Ram Charan and his entrepreneur wife Upasana Kamineni Konidela are all set to welcome their first child in India. Upasana has set the record straight on rumours that their first child will be born in the US.

The couple had announced their pregnancy back in December 2022. Upasana, who is also the Vice Chairperson of CSR at Apollo Hospitals, is excited to have her child delivered in her home country amidst the hospital staff she has known for years.

Speculation had arisen after Ram Charan’s appearance on popular news show ‘Good Morning America‘, leading to rumours that the couple might be planning to welcome their firstborn in the US. However, Upasana took to Twitter to clarify that their delivery will be taking place in India.

Expressing her enthusiasm for this new phase in her life, Upasana shared: “I am thrilled to have our first baby delivered in our home country – India, surrounded by a world class medical OB/GYN team at The Apollo Hospitals, including Dr Sumana Manohar, Dr Rooma Sinha and now Dr Jennifer Ashton from the Good Morning America Show. This journey holds many exciting experiences for us and we look forward to this new phase in our lives with great anticipation.”

At Apollo hospitals, the OB/GYN team will consist of Dr Sumana Manohar and Dr Rooma Sinha. Also, Dr Jennifer Ashton, a Board-certified Ob-Gyn, author and TV medical correspondent from the US will also be part of the team to deliver the couple’s baby.

  • Clear parallels between Nazi, Modi regime: Yale Uni professor

Clear parallels between Nazi, Modi regime: Yale Uni professor

    [ad_1]

Yale University professor and renowned scholar on fascism Dr Jason Stanley said that India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) under Prime Minister Narendra Modi mimics the Nazi playbook.

“Modi’s far-right supporters and other Hindu supremacists celebrate their connections with Nazis. The RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh) explicitly says, ‘We want to do to Muslims what the Nazis did to Jews,” Dr Stanley said.

RSS is a Hindu militant organization and progenitor of Hindutva/Hindu supremacist ideology. BJP is its political wing.

Dr Stanley’s remarks came at the Indian American Muslim Council (IAMC) event held on Sunday in Woodbridge, New Jersey, commemorating the 21st anniversary of the Gujarat pogrom.

The pogrom took place during the reign of the current Prime Minister Narendra Modi who was then the chief minister of Gujarat.

The state had witnessed widespread communal riots which started on February 28, 2002, a day after the Godhra train burning incident that claimed 59 lives.

The pogrom that it triggered killed at least 1,044 people, on record. Giving details, the Central government informed the Rajya Sabha in May 2005 that 254 Hindus and 790 Muslims were killed in the post-Godhra riots.

The event also featured a panel discussion on ‘Hindu Far-Right in India and the US’ where Dr Stanley argued that BJP’s recent Citizenship Amendment Act could be used to strip Muslims of Indian citizenship, just as the Nuremberg laws were used by Nazis to strip German Jews of citizenship.

“Modi’s visions of a pure Hindu past also mirror the idealized Aryan past envisioned by Adolf Hitler. I don’t need to uncover connections between Modi and prior fascist regimes. They are clear and explicit. Both RSS and BJP were central examples in my 2018 book ‘How Fascism Works,” Dr Stanley said.

Imran Dawood, a British Muslim man who was stabbed and left for dead during the Gujarat pogrom, echoed Stanley’s condemnation of Modi’s policies. Two of Dawood’s uncles and a family friend were burned alive during the riots.

“This trauma will always be with me, but I won’t be defined by it. Going forward, we must denigrate the hateful ideology that allowed the pogrom to happen. We must oppose the BJP’s ongoing, destructive bulldozer policies. Bulldozers must be used constructively for humanity, not to destroy humanity,” Dawood said.

The IAMC slammed the Modi regime over regularly sending bulldozers to illegally demolish Muslim homes which they stated have since become an international symbol for Modi and his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s Islamophobic policies.

Dawood’s condemnation of bulldozer policies resonated with the local Muslim community, which just last year witnessed a bulldozer decorated with pictures of Modi and Uttar Pradesh chief minister, a Hindu monk, Yogi Adityanath paraded through Edison, New Jersey on Indian Independence Day.

Imran Dawood’s uncle, Yusuf Dawood, recounted how excited his nephew had been to finally vacation in India, to taste its food, see the Taj Mahal, and learn about the land his parents loved — only to find himself brutally stabbed and saddled with the shattering loss of two uncles and a friend.

“The police lied to us and told us our relatives were missing. They knew they were dead. Our vision of India was changed from one moment to the next,” Yusuf said. “We must not let Hindu supremacists’ vision of hatred destroy our own values.” He also recounted how the police in Gujarat had failed to gather signatures to witness statements, effectively nullifying scores of eyewitness accounts.

Aakashi Bhatt, daughter of jailed whistleblower and former senior police officer Sanjiv Bhatt, recounted how the current regime had sentenced her father to life in prison for speaking out against PM Modi’s complicity in the pogrom.

“Justice has been systematically delayed and intentionally denied,” Bhatt said. “We live in Modi’s India now, where rapists and murderers walk free, but an honest officer must live in prison. In Modi’s India, a fair day in court is not afforded to the honest and upright. The Indian judiciary has been systematically dismantled to assure that Modi cannot face trial and whistleblowers go to jail.”

Bhatt also pointed to the example of Haren Pandya, who was murdered shortly after speaking out about Modi’s complicity, and RB Sreekumar, who was also arrested for whistleblowing.

Renowned activist and Executive Director of Polis Project Suchitra Vijayan, who is also the author of the award-winning book “Midnight’s Borders,” further characterized Modi and the BJP’s vision of India. “Modi’s Hindutva [Hindu nationalism] is based on an exclusionary idea of what it means to be Hindu. A Hindu is not a Muslim, is not a Christian. Hindu Supremacy is foundational to the BJP and RSS,” said Vijayan.

She explained how failures by previous governments to deal with communal violence in India cleared the ground for present Hindu supremacist violence. “What we saw in Gujarat was a continuation of previous attacks. But we must remember that what happened in Gujarat never ended. It goes on every day in India. Statistics prove attacks against Muslims continue to grow under Modi’s rule,” she said.

Azad Essa, a journalist at Middle East Eye and author of “Hostile Homelands,” a recent book on Modi’s international religious nationalist influences, explained how Hindu supremacists exported their agenda to the United States.

“We have to remember that numerous high-profile RSS members were banned from India in the 1970s. Then its members came to the US and started spreading their ideology here. So we see the Hindu Swayamsewak Sangh, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad of America, and later the Hindu America Foundation continuing to influence American politicians with a covert Hindu supremacist agenda,” Essa said.

He noted how these US-based Hindu supremacist organizations weaponize the term Hinduphobia to denigrate anyone critical of Modi’s policies.

The event closed with a lively discussion between the audience and panellists. Panellists recounted the victories of the civil rights movement, one of the only mobilizations in the world to successfully challenge an ethnic supremacist regime without resorting to mass violence.

Members of the African-American community shared their support for the event and called for the defeat of the Hindutva movement in India, the US, and elsewhere.

Erik ten Hag angry as Manchester United denied ‘clear penalty’

    [ad_1]

Erik ten Hag insisted that Manchester United should have scored more goals after a 2-2 draw in their Europa League play off first leg against Barcelona at the Camp Nou.

The Dutchman also complained that Barcelona had escaped a gamechanging clear red card and a penalty after Jules Koundé bundled over Marcus Rashford near the edge of the area at 2-1 to the visitors, suggesting that the atmosphere might have influenced the referee, Maurizio Mariani.

    skip past newsletter promotion

“It was 2-1, a clear foul on Marcus Rashford and a penalty,” Ten Hag said. “If it’s in the box or just outside the box, it’s definitely a red card. I asked the referee: why? He said it was outside the box and it was no foul. The referee and the linesman were in a good position and if not there is the VAR. It’s not good. It’s a really bad decision. Maybe they were impressed by the pressure that Barcelona made but they can’t be at the highest level.”

Barcelona also had a penalty appeal when the ball appeared to hit Fred on the arm, with coach Xavi Hernández confronting the referee at full time. “It’s a penalty the size of a cathedral; how are you going to feel?” Xavi said. “I don’t know what they have to do to blow a penalty for handball. They looked at it as well and said no. It seems incredible to me, incredible.”

When that was put to Ten Hag and it was suggested that the two decisions evened each other out, he replied: “You can’t see it this way. The Rashford one is at 2-1 and the momentum of the game is totally different. I didn’t see the handball, so maybe it can be a mistake. Maybe it can be two mistakes. But you can’t equalise the two because of the moment in the game, in the whole round. That was an important decision where he was wrong.

“In a game when you create five or seven chances you have to finish more,” the United coach added. “We should have on this game. We need to be more clinical, finish our chances. In such a game we created many chances and there is a disappointment that we did not finish them.”
