SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir government has decided to provisionally promote 10 standard students to next class in a bid to avoid academic loss.

This follows the conclusion of the Class X exam on Wednesday. More than 63500 students appeared for the matriculation exam in soft zones of Kashmir. This was for the first time that the board exam was held in March. In August last year, the government shifted the academic session to March in sync with National Education Policy (NEP).

Principal Secretary, Education, Alok Kumar told The Kashmir Monitor that they always provide provisional admission to the students. “It is not a new thing. We do provide provisional admission to the students. This time too it will be done. Till results are out, the students will be promoted to the next class,” he said.

As per the ‘Uniform Academic calendar, the students who appear in Class 10 and 11 examinations shall be provisionally admitted in Class 11th and 12th respectively after the conclusion of the Board examination

According to a government order, students, who are declared unsuccessful shall be permitted to continue their studies in Class 11th and 12th till the result of the Biannual/Annual Private examinations is declared. “In respect of the candidates who fail to pass in Bi-annual examination, provisional admission shall be canceled,” the order said.

This year, 630 exam centers were set up for Class X students across the Kashmir division. Nearly 63543 students had enrolled for the exam in the soft zones of the valley.

Officials said the March session has helped to overcome many academic hiccups for the students. “Earlier students who had to seek admission elsewhere had to face migration issues. This time students can seek admission anywhere. There will be no problem whatsoever,” said an officer.

The government is now planning to hold exam for hard zones. Hard zones are those areas which are snowbound and not reachable. Since access to the area is difficult during March, the government decided to hold their exam separately. These students too will be given provisional admission and promoted to the next class. “They will also be promoted provisionally,” said an officer.

  • NCERT textbook row: Reference to Gujarat riots dropped from class 11 Sociology book

NCERT textbook row: Reference to Gujarat riots dropped from class 11 Sociology book

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: A portion referring to the Gujarat riots has been dropped from the class 11 Sociology textbook by NCERT, months after it removed the reference to the 2002 communal violence in two class 12 textbooks.

The purged paragraph from the class 11 textbook was not announced in the curriculum rationalisation booklet notified by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) last year.

NCERT Director Dinesh Saklani, however, claimed that the change was approved during the same exercise and it did not find mention in the official notification due to an “oversight”.

    MS Education Academy

In the class 11 Sociology textbook titled “Understanding Society”, the deleted paragraph talked about how class, religion and ethnicities often lead to segregation of residential areas and it then cites the communal violence in Gujarat in 2002 to illustrate how communal violence furthers ghettoisation.

“Where and how people will live in cities is a question that is also filtered through socio-cultural identities. Residential areas in cities all over the world are almost always segregated by class, and often also by race, ethnicity, religion and other such variables. Tensions between such identities both cause these segregation patterns and are also a consequence,” the purged paragraph read.

“For example, in India, communal tensions between religious communities, most commonly Hindus and Muslims, results in the conversion of mixed neighbourhoods into single-community ones. This in turn gives a specific spatial pattern to communal violence whenever it erupts, which again furthers the ‘ghettoisation’ process. This has happened in many cities in India, most recently in Gujarat following the riots of 2002,” it added.

According to Centre’s reply tabled in the Parliament earlier, 790 Muslims and 254 Hindus were killed, 223 were reported missing and 2,500 injured in the Gujarat riots of 2002.

As part of its “syllabus rationalisation” exercise last year, the NCERT, citing “overlapping” and “irrelevant” as reasons, dropped certain portions from the course including lessons on Gujarat riots, Mughal courts, Emergency, Cold War, Naxalite movement, among others from its textbooks.

The council had then announced dropping the Gujarat riots reference in class 12 Political Science and Sociology textbook.

In the class 12 political science textbook, two whole pages on the riots in the chapter titled “Politics in India Since Independence” have been deleted.

The first page carried the chronology of events and refered to the National Human Rights Commission’s criticism of the Gujarat government for failing to control the violence.

“Instances, like in Gujarat, alert us to the dangers involved in using religious sentiments for political purposes. This poses a threat to democratic politics,” the deleted portion read.

The second page carried a collage of three newspaper reports on the riots along with an excerpt of NHRC’s observation from its Annual Report of 2001-2002 on the Gujarat government’s handling of the riots. Former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s famous “Raj dharma” remark in this section was also removed.

In the class 12 sociology textbook, NCERT had dropped a paragraph under the section titled “Communalism, Secularism and the Nation-State” which described how communalism “drives people to kill, rape, and loot members of other communities in order to redeem their pride, to protect their home turf”.

Besides the Gujarat riots reference, “Gandhiji’s death had magical effect on communal situation in the country”, “Gandhi’s pursuit of Hindu-Muslim unity provoked Hindu extremists” and “Organisations like RSS were banned for some time” are among the portions missing from the class 12 political science textbook for the new academic session.

As per the past practice, the children have got admitted at the age of 2+ years in nursery class and such students have completed three years in the pre-primary level and are now in the age group of 5+ years. Withholding their admission by a year will attribute to loss of an academic year, as they are due for admission in class 1t in the session 2023-24.

In view of the above, the matter has been examined after considering the concerns of all the stakeholders, notifications issued by various State Govts. & series of deliberations. It has been decided to gradually implement the NEP and relax the age criteria for admission to class 1st for the academic session 2023-24, in view of the transition period.

Accordingly, the students who have completed two / three years in the pre-primary classes, as the case may be, and have attained the age of more than 5 years as on 315T March, 2023, shall be admitted in the Ist Class in the academic session 2023-24.

  • Age Criteria Relaxed For Admission In Class Ist

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: The Directorate of School Education Jammu on Monday has issued an order that provides a significant relief to parents and their children who are between 5 to 6 years old. The order relaxes the age criteria for admission into Class 1 for the academic session of 2023-24.

“The students, who have completed two/three years in the pre-primary classes, as the case may be, and have attained the age of more than five years as on March 31, 2023, shall be admitted in the Class Ist in the academic session 2023-23,” stated a Government circular signed by Director School Education Jammu, Ravi Shankar Sharma.

The decision to provide age relaxation was made in response to numerous complaints from parents who reported that various schools were denying admission to their children in Class 1, citing the reason that their children’s age is below six years. According to the new National Education Policy, the age requirement for admission to Class 1 is six years, which has caused confusion and distress among parents.

“Traditionally, children have been enrolled in the Nursery class at the age of 2 years or more. As a result, these students have completed three years of pre-primary education and are now between 5 and 6 years old,” explained DSEJ Ravi Shankar Sharma.

Sharma further added that denying admission to these children for one year would result in the loss of an academic year since they are scheduled to begin their studies in Class 1 in the academic session of 2023-24.
