‘Don’t talk to me’: A look at Trump’s previous clashes with CNN’s Kaitlan Collins

    [ad_1]

    image

Here are some of those more memorable moments:

When Collins was banned from a Rose Garden press conference

In 2018, Collins was barred from attending a press conference in the Rose Garden after asking questions about Trump’s former lawyer, Michael Cohen, and Russian President Vladimir Putin while she was on duty as the pool reporter.

At a photo-op in the Oval Office, Collins called out several questions to Trump as White House staffers ushered the press out of the room. Later, Collins said White House communications director Bill Shine and White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders called her into Shine’s office and told her she could not attend the upcoming press conference because her questions had been inappropriate.

The incident sparked outrage from Collins’ fellow White House reporters and her own network, which issued a statement calling the move “retaliatory in nature and not indicative of an open and free press.”

‘A very nice question so beautifully asked’

Trump mocked Collins at a 2019 press conference when she pressed him on statements he had made about his administration’s plans for a wall at the U.S.-Mexico border amid the partial government shutdown caused by a standoff between lawmakers and the White House over funding for the wall.

“You ran your campaign promising supporters that Mexico is going to pay for the wall,” Collins began before Trump interrupted her. “Oh here we go again,” he said.

“And that wall was going to be made of concrete,” Collins continued. “You just said earlier that the wall could be made of steel and right now our government is shut down over a demand from your administration that the American taxpayer pay for the wall. So how can you say that you are not failing on that promise to your supporters?”

“A very nice question so beautifully asked, even though I just answered it,” Trump replied.

“I just told you that we just made a trade deal. We will take in billions and billions of dollars, far more than the cost of the wall,” Trump said.

Collins attempted to ask a follow-up question about that trade deal, but Trump had already moved on to a question from another reporter.

‘CNN is fake news. Don’t talk to me.’

After CNN reported on North Korean President Kim Jong Un’s health in 2020, Trump attacked the network and Collins during a press conference for what he said he believed was incorrect reporting.

Collins asked Trump if he had been in contact with North Korea, to which he replied, “I don’t want to say. I won’t say that. We have a good relationship with North Korea — as good as you can have. I mean, we have a good relationship with North Korea. I have a good relationship with Kim Jong Un and I hope he’s OK.”

But when Collins attempted to ask a follow up, he shot her down and called CNN “fake news.”

“No, that’s enough,” Trump said. “The problem is, you don’t write the truth.”

“No, not CNN please,” he added when Collins continued to press him. “I told you, CNN is fake news. Don’t talk to me.”

When Trump’s administration tried to make Collins move to the back of the briefing room

Shortly after clashing over questions on North Korea, Trump’s staff tried to order Collins to move from her front-row seat in the White House briefing room, defying the seating assignments managed by the White House Correspondents’ Association, which White House officials had agreed to.

Collins refused and the press conference went ahead, but Trump kept the briefing short and took no questions.

When Trump walked out of a press conference after a question from Collins

Trump abruptly ended a press conference in July 2020 after Collins tried to ask him questions about a video he retweeted that included false information about Covid-19.

“The woman that you said is a ‘great doctor’ in that video that you retweeted last night said that masks don’t work and there’s a cure for COVID-19, both of which experts say is not true,” Collins said during a press briefing with the president. “She’s also made videos saying that doctors make medicine using DNA from aliens and that they’re trying to create a vaccine to make you immune from becoming religious. So, what’s the logic in retweeting that?”

“She was on air with many other doctors. And they were big fans of hydroxychloroquine,” Trump replied. “And I thought she was very impressive in the sense that where she came — I don’t know which country she comes from — but she’s said that she’s had tremendous success with hundreds of different patients. And I thought her voice was an important voice, but I know nothing about her.”

When Collins pressed Trump, he abruptly ended the press conference and quickly walked out.

Fierce clashes continue in Sudan despite 7-day truce

    [ad_1]

Khartoum: Khartoum and several other areas in Sudan witnessed continued violent clashes between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) despite a seven-day truce agreed by the two warring factions.

The violent clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the RSF which erupted on April 15, has so far left more than 550 people dead and 4,926 others wounded, while thousands of citizens have been displaced or forced to seek refuge in safe areas or neighbouring countries, including Egypt, Ethiopia and Chad, reports Xinhua news agency.

On Thursday, the SAF announced that its units clashed with RSF fighters in the town of Bahri, north of capital Khartoum.

    MS Education Academy

“Our forces clashed at dawn today with the rebels who tried to attack the command Bahri military area,” the army said in a statement.

“Our forces destroyed eight combat vehicles of the enemy and seized 11 vehicles, a Katyusha launcher and communication devices,” the statement added.

The SAF further called on the citizens to keep away from the sites of clashes and strange metal objects.

The RSF, for its part, accused the army of violating the declared humanitarian truce and attacking their posts at on Thursday.

“Our forces and residential neighbourhoods came under indiscriminate artillery and aircraft bombardment in a flagrant violation of international norms as well as international and humanitarian law,” the paramilitary said in a statement.

Meanwhile, violent clashes also took place on Thursday in El-Obeid, the capital city of North Kordofan state.

“El-Obeid city and the command of the 5th Infantry Division came under a treacherous attack by the rebels today,” the SAF said.

“The enemy was crushed and suffered heavy losses and its remnants are being chased out of the city.”

The army said that the operational situation in all parts of Sudan was stable and calm, except for parts of the capital and El-Obeid city.

The incidents of violence came a few hours after the two sides agreed to a seven-day truce extension proposed by the regional African bloc Inter-Governmental Authority on Development.

Earlier in the day, the Foreign Ministry condemned what it termed “the violations of the rebel RSF against embassies and diplomatic missions without the slightest regard to the declared truce or respect for international law”.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemns the attacks by the rebel forces on the headquarters of the Indian Embassy,” it said in a statement.

The Ministry said that it had also received complaints about attacks on the building of the Saudi cultural attache, residences of the Swiss diplomats, and the consular section of the Turkish Embassy.

Given that the clashes have pushed the country to the edge of a humanitarian crisis, UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Martin Griffiths, who arrived in the eastern city of Port Sudan on Wednesday, urged the warring parties to ensure the safe delivery of humanitarian aid to the needy.

To this end, RSF Commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo pledged to open and protect humanitarian corridors to facilitate the movement of citizens in areas controlled by his forces.

Bengal Ram Navami clashes: NIA seeks details from state police

    [ad_1]

Kolkata: National Investigation Agency (NIA) probing the Ram Navami violence in Howrah and Hooghly districts of West Bengal, on Wednesday, sought from the state police all the documents, including copies of the FIRs, related to the case.

A communique on this count has reached the offices of the commissioners of Chandernagore Police Commiserate and Howrah City Police, sources said.

A copy of the same has also been forwarded to the office of the additional director general in charge of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the state police.

    MS Education Academy

Although initially CID-West Bengal took over the investigation, on April 27, a division bench of the Calcutta High Court ordered an NIA probe into it.

It is learnt that NIA has sought a quick response from the state police authorities so that their sleuths can start the investigation at the earliest.

Meanwhile, state government sources said that the administration is mulling the possibility of approaching the Supreme Court challenging the decision of the division bench of the Calcutta High Court directing NIA probe into the matter.

On April 27, while directing the NIA to take over the probe in the matter, Calcutta High Court’s division bench of Chief Justice T.S. Sivagnanam and Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharya also directed the state police to handover all case-related documents to the NIA within the next two weeks.

While passing the order, the bench observed that it is beyond the ability of the state police to find those who were responsible for the clashes or who instigated it and hence a probe by a central agency was necessary.

Earlier, the division bench questioned the efficiency of the intelligence wing of the state police regarding the pelting of stones from the roofs of residences in the troubled belts.

The bench questioned the failure of the intelligence in getting information about stones being accumulated on the rooftops.

NIA to probe Ram Navami clashes in Bengal: Calcutta HC

    [ad_1]

Kolkata: A division bench of the Calcutta High Court on Thursday ruled that the National Investigation Agency (NIA) will probe the clashes during the recent Ram Navami processions in certain pockets of Howrah and Hooghly district of West Bengal.

The division bench of Calcutta High Court’s acting Chief Justice T.S. Sivagnanam and Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharya directed the state police to handover all case- related documents to the NIA within the next two weeks.

Following the clashes, the leader of the opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari had approached the same division bench of the Calcutta High Court with the plea for a central agency probe.

    MS Education Academy

On April 10, the NIA authorities also informed the Calcutta High Court that they will have no problem in taking over the probe on this count if the court permits.

The division bench observed that it is beyond the ability of the state police to find those who were responsible for the clashes or who instigated it and hence a probe by a central agency was necessary.

Justice Sivagnanam also raised questions about the suspension of Internet services in the troubled belts after the clashes. “In such clashes the Internet services cannot be suspended. Such events keep the people tense,” he observed.

Earlier, the division bench questioned the efficiency of the intelligence wing of the state police regarding pelting of stones from the roofs of residences in the troubled belts. The bench questioned the failure of the intelligence in getting information about stones being accumulated on the rooftops.

  • McHenry clashes with SEC’s Gensler over crypto crackdown

McHenry clashes with SEC’s Gensler over crypto crackdown

    [ad_1]

    congress 83187

Gensler has long argued that much of the lightly regulated $1 trillion market violates U.S. securities rules because many of the products consist of unregistered securities.

Gensler, an ally of top progressives like Senate Banking Chair Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), has been on a collision course with McHenry since the GOP took control of the House in January. The veteran regulator’s turbocharged rulemaking agenda includes planned overhauls of the private equity industry and stock market trading, along with a sweeping climate disclosure proposal that Republicans have battered with claims of government overreach.

But much of the fireworks during Tuesday’s marathon five-and-a-half-hour hearing were over crypto.

McHenry — along with other Republicans like Reps. French Hill of Arkansas and Bill Huizenga of Michigan — attacked Gensler over his approach to regulation. They said he was too focused on enforcement and not enough on providing clarity for the industry. They also blasted the SEC chair for stonewalling their efforts to investigate his response to the FTX failure, with McHenry calling the agency’s responses “unacceptable.”

“If you continue to thwart this institution by ignoring our requests and providing incomplete responses, we will be left with no choice but to pursue all avenues to compel the information or documents we need,” McHenry said.

In one contentious exchange, McHenry challenged Gensler to explain whether Ether — the second-largest crypto token after Bitcoin — is a security, while hinting at a potential turf war between the SEC and another regulator, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. CFTC Chair Rostin Behnam, whose agency oversees derivatives products, has said that Ether falls under the CFTC’s jurisdiction.

“Do you think it serves the market for an object to be viewed by the commodities regulators as a commodity and the securities regulator to be viewed as a security? Do you think that provides safety and soundness for the products?” McHenry asked Gensler, who led the CFTC during the Obama administration. “I think ‘no’ should be a very simple answer for you here.”

But Gensler declined, citing a longstanding precedent for SEC officials to not comment on specific cases. Instead, he offered a high-level response explaining the SEC’s test for determining whether an asset is a security.

The SEC chair called on exchanges, brokers and issuers to comply with the same rules that Wall Street follows.

“It’s not a matter of a lack of clarity,” he said. “This is a field that in the main is built up around non-compliance.”

Democrats, led by ranking member Maxine Waters (D-Calif.), defended Gensler’s crypto strategy — as well as most of the SEC’s agenda. Waters said his approach to crypto marked a “stark difference” from that of previous SEC officials. And Rep. Jim Himes of Connecticut criticized Republicans for taking issue with the SEC for doing “too much, too quickly” just weeks after blasting bank regulators for doing “too little” and moving “too slowly” following the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank.

The hearing offered Republicans a rare opportunity to harangue Gensler to his face rather than through public letters and official statements.

Gensler was often quick to defend the SEC’s work, but the frustration was palpable. Several lawmakers, including House Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) and Rep. Warren Davidson of Ohio, voiced displeasure with Gensler’s refusal to answer yes or no questions about his agenda.

Rep. Alex Mooney (R-W.V.) bashed as “radical” Gensler’s high-profile bid to require public companies to disclose climate risks.

Rep. Andy Barr (R-Ky.) said the SEC’s attempt to force private equity firms to make new disclosures to their investors would strip competition from the private funds market and harm investors. And Rep. Ann Wagner (R-Mo.), who chairs the committee’s panel on capital markets, said the planned overhaul of U.S. stock trading risks making “equity markets more costly, less efficient and overall worse” for individual investors.

    Even some Democrats had questions.

Rep. Ritchie Torres of New York wondered aloud whether the SEC’s plans to update stock trading rules are “fixing what ain’t broken.”

    [ad_1]

Thiruvananthapuram: The wife of a Keralite, who was killed during the exchange of firing between paramilitary forces and the Sudanese Army in Khartoum, has appealed to the Indian government to extend help to retrieve the body from the flat where they were living.

Speaking to reporters over telephone from Khartoum, Saibella on Sunday said that the ambulance that had come to take the body of her husband, Albert Augustine, was not allowed to remove his body as fighting was continuing in that area

Saibella, who was on a holiday to join her husband in Khartoum, said that she was now staying in the basement of the flat building along with the neighbours and her daughter who is in the Class 6, and had not consumed food for the past 24 hours.

    MS Education Academy

Meanwhile, Union Minister of State for External Affairs, V. Muraleedharan said that the government was taking steps to bring the body of Augustine back to India and efforts are on to rescue his family.

Augustine, an ex-serviceman, had joined as a private company in Khartoum as a security officer seven months ago and was shot dead on Saturday night when a stray bullet hit during fighting between paramilitary forces and the army in the Sudanese capital.

Fact-finding team calls for NIA probe in Bengal Ram Navami clashes

    [ad_1]

Kolkata: The members of a fact-finding team of Delhi-based NGO “Fact Finding Committee on Human Rights Violation” on Sunday evening said that the clashes over Ram Navami processions in West Bengal’s Howrah and Hooghly districts call for an investigation by the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

After being restricted by police on Sunday afternoon from going to Shibpur and Kazipara in Howrah, where clashes broke out over Ram Navami processions on March 30 and continued till the next day, the members of the fact-finding team came back to Kolkata and talked to the media persons.

“Despite being restricted in reaching the troubled spots in Howrah district on Sunday and to Rishra in Hooghly district on Saturday, we were able to somehow interact with some of the local people. What we heard from them is quite shameful. There were not adequate police forces when the trouble broke out in these pockets. The administration is playing the ‘me & you’ game. This is a perfect case for a NIA-level probes. At the same time, central armed forces personnel should also be deployed there,” a team member said.

    MS Education Academy

Meanwhile, political slugfest has started over the police denial to the members of the fact-finding team to reach the troubled spots at Hooghly on Saturday and after that at Howrah on Sunday.

According to the Trinamool Congress’ state General Secretary and party spokesman Kunal Ghosh, the police had done the right thing by denying them permission. “Since Ram Navami, BJP has been trying to create problems in those areas by using the outsiders,” he said.

BJP’s state spokesman Samik Bhattacharya alleged that since the administration has a lot of things to hide, they prevented the members of the fact-finding team from reaching those pockets in Howrah and Hooghly districts.

  • Communal clashes on Ram Navami in West Bengal ‘state sponsored’: BJP leader

Communal clashes on Ram Navami in West Bengal ‘state sponsored’: BJP leader

    [ad_1]

Indore: Communal clashes during Ram Navami celebrations in West Bengal were “sponsored” by the Trinamool Congress government in the state, alleged Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya on Thursday.

He accused Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of giving “provocative statements” against the central government on the day of the Hindu festival last week.

Violence and arson were witnessed during the Ram Navami festival in Howrah and Hooghly, sparking a fresh war of words between the ruling TMC and the Opposition BJP.

    MS Education Academy

Vijayvargiya, talking to reporters after attending a local party meeting at the BJP office in Indore, alleged the communal violence on Ram Navami in West Bengal was “sponsored” by the state government.

He claimed Banerjee gave “provocative statements” during a sit-in and this vitiated the atmosphere.

“Banerjee is holding a responsible post of chief minister. I think she should refrain from making such irresponsible statements,” Vijaywargiya remarked.

The BJP leader, who was earlier in-charge of West Bengal, maintained Banerjee herself wants communal tension in her state so that she can take political advantage out of it.

The TMC, on the other hand, has claimed BJP leaders “fomented trouble” during Ram Navami.

The former Madhya Pradesh minister alleged the West Bengal government gives “security” to those who create disturbance during processions taken out on the occasion of Ram Navami or Hanuman Jayanti.

Responding to a question, Vijayvargiya said the “Modi effect” (the influence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi) is leading to a transformation of the Congress party.

“Earlier, if Congress leaders used to appear at any religious event, it was only at ‘iftar’ parties (organised during the holy month of Ramadan). But now their leaders have started wearing janeu (sacred thread), going to temples and reciting Hanuman Chalisa. This means the Modi effect is not only visible on the country, but also on the Congress,” he remarked.

The BJP general secretary said former Congress president Rahul Gandhi did not apologise for his alleged anti-India remarks made in London because he is “feudal-minded” and has no faith in democracy, Parliament and judiciary.

He said these days the people of Pakistan, facing one of its worst economic crises since its creation in 1947, can be heard saying on news channels that Mohammad Ali Jinnah was wrong in demanding partition of the country.

“Under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, India is progressing well and the country’s reputation is getting enhanced in the world. On the other hand, Pakistan has joined the ranks of the poorest countries in the world. In such a situation, the people there (Pakistan) have started feeling that we should get merged with India,” said the BJP leader.
