  • Report claims surge in Indians entering UK illegally on boats across English Channel

Report claims surge in Indians entering UK illegally on boats across English Channel

    [ad_1]

London: Indians have allegedly become the third-largest group of migrants entering UK shores illegally across the English Channel on dangerous small boats, according to a UK media report quoting Home Office sources on Friday.

‘The Times’ newspaper reports that Home Office officials believe Indian students are using a loophole in the rules that allows asylum seekers to study in the UK and pay much lower domestic, rather than international fees.

It reports that about 250 Indian migrants have made the dangerous crossing in small boats this year alone, more than 233 who crossed the Channel in the last year – making them the third largest cohort after Afghans and Syrians.

“One theory being pursued is Serbia’s visa-free travel rules for Indians, which Home Office officials believe is providing a gateway into Europe,” the report claims.

“Until the end of last year, all Indian passport holders were able to enter Serbia without a visa for up to 30 days. Home Office officials believe the arrangement, which ended on January 1 as part of Serbia’s efforts to align with EU (European Union) visa policies, led to some Indians travelling onward into the EU and subsequently to the UK in small boats,” it claims.

According to official Home Office statistics published in early November last year for these illegal Channel crossings in the first six months of 2022, over half (51 per cent) of small boat arrivals were from three nationalities – Albanian (18 per cent), Afghan (18 per cent) and Iranian (15 per cent).

Indians have not been among the nationalities referenced in official statistics of this illegal route so far.

“This is very disturbing to hear and is the first the NISAU (National Indian Students and Alumni Union) has heard of such an act,” said Sanam Arora, chair of the Indian student representative organisation in the UK.

“Indian students are law-abiding, meritorious and very hard-working and we are worried that such isolated incidents, if true, can reflect badly on the whole community. Indian students who have studied in the UK are trailblazers who are setting the future of the India-UK relationship. We’d like to understand details of who these immigrants are and what their motivations for entering the UK in this manner are…no student should ever abuse the UK’s visa system,” she said.

While the UK Home Office declined to comment specifically on the media report quoting sources, a government spokesperson told PTI that the UK’s Migration and Mobility Partnership (MMP) with India are aimed at accelerating the removals of any illegal migrants.

“Our migration deal with India aims to enhance and accelerate the removal of Indian nationals with no right to stay in the UK and secure greater cooperation around organised immigration crime,” the spokesperson said.

“The global migration crisis continues to place an unprecedented strain on our asylum system. This is why we are going to introduce legislation which will ensure that people arriving in the UK illegally are detained and removed to another country,” the spokesperson added.

Tackling the problem of illegal small boat crossings across the English Channel is among the top government priorities set by British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

The Home Office said its Small Boats Operational Command (SBOC) will oversee operational activity with neighbouring France to disrupt such crossings, save lives at sea and ensure the effective processing of arrivals in the UK.

  • Plea in Kerala HC claims Vizhinjam sea port construction causing noise pollution

Plea in Kerala HC claims Vizhinjam sea port construction causing noise pollution

    [ad_1]

Kochi: A plea in the Kerala High Court has claimed that the Vizhinjam sea port construction work was causing noise pollution in the area.

Refuting the allegation in the plea, moved by a Thiruvananthapuram-based resort, the Vizhinjam International Sea Port Ltd and Adani Vizhinjam Port Pvt Ltd claimed the sound generated by the construction activity, during day and night, was below the noise standards contained in the Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) guidelines.

In view of the claim by the two companies, the High Court on Tuesday directed them to produce the EHS guidelines on noise standards.

The court also directed them to place before it the National Green Tribunal (NGT) order appointing a monitoring body to oversee the construction activities, including the issue of noise pollution.

The direction was issued as the two companies contended that the NGT has issued an order appointing a monitoring agency to keep watch over all the sea port construction-related activities, including the issue of noise pollution.

The court also recorded the submission of the two companies that they were adhering to the sound limit fixed as per the schedule attached to the Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules, 2000, during the sea port construction.

The court’s order came on a plea by Bethsaida Hermitage complaining that the sea port construction activity was causing noise pollution in the area.

It has also urged the court to direct the two companies to desist from undertaking noisy construction work during the night hours at the project site till the pendency of the plea.

  • Telangana has almost zero farmer suicide, claims BRS’ Palla Rajeshwar

Telangana has almost zero farmer suicide, claims BRS’ Palla Rajeshwar

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The Rythu Bandhu Samithi president and Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader Palla Rajeshwar Reddy claimed that farmer suicides in the state are almost zero.

Reddy was addressing a press conference along with government whip G Balaraju and MLCs M S Prabhakar Rao and V Gangadhar Goud on Monday.

Praising chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao’s pro-farmer welfare schemes, Reddy shot down allegations made by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state president Bandi Sanjay who claimed that nearly 10,000 farmers in the state have died by suicide.

On January 27, Bandi Sanjay visited the family of deceased farmer Ramulu at Adloor Yellareddy village in Kamareddy and accused the KCR government of land grabbing.

“Ramulu along with his brother has only 2 acres of land. He has 2 children, one studying in Class 5 and the other in Class 10. The 15-year-old elder boy also works in a bakery nearby. It is sad that the only 2 acres of land he owns have gone into the industrial zone. He fought for it for around 20 days but no one responded. The people and the farmers staged protests. But no one responded and it is unfortunate that Ramulu had to die for it,” Bandi Sanjay said.

Claiming that Bandi Sanjay’s claims are baseless, Palla Rajeshwar Reddy said that BRS has full proof of zero farmer suicides.

“Bandi Sanjay is talking about the increase in suicide whereas, on the other hand, the Union Minister of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare Narendra Singh Tomar had told the Parliament that there has been a 400 percent decrease in Telangana ever since its formation in 2014,” Reddy said.

Reddy further said that over 91 percent farmer population have benefitted from the Rythu Bandhu scheme. “This includes small and marginal farmers. Those having 50 acres or more comprised only 0.09%. Also, 81% of farmers belong to the scheduled caste, scheduled tribes and backward classes. Allegations made by the Opposition parties are all baseless and politically motivated,” Reddy concluded.

  • BBC documentary screening: JNU students allege stone pelting; police deny claims

BBC documentary screening: JNU students allege stone pelting; police deny claims

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: A high drama prevailed at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus on Monday late evening after the students alleged that they were attacked with stones while watching a controversial BBC documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

However, Deputy Commissioner of Police (southwest), Manoj C. denied reports of stone pelting.

When asked about the incident, the DCP said “I repeat again no such incident has been reported to us so far.”

“If we receive a complaint from any section of JNU, necessary legal action as deemed appropriate will be taken,” said the DCP.

Meanwhile, internet service and electricity connection at the office of the JNU Students’ Union (JNUSU) were snapped on Tuesday after some students wanted to screen the BBC documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The JNU administration had earlier asked the students to cancel the screening of the documentary — ‘India: The Modi Question’.

The varsity administration, in a stern warning, told the students that disciplinary action may be initiated as per the university rules if anyone screens the documentary.

A section of students under the banner of JNUSU had distributed pamphlets for the screening of the documentary at 9 p.m. on Tuesday.

The JNU administration was of the view that “such unauthorised activities on the campus may disturb peace and harmony” at the university. However, even after the warning, when the students remained adamant, the university administration decided to disconnect electricity and internet.

The varsity had earlier stated that no prior permission was sought from the JNU administration for the screening of the documentary.

Meanwhile, ABVP’s JNU unit president Rohit Kumar said the students’ body “welcomes the instructions to stop the screening of the documentary”.

“The BBC has been working to tarnish the image of India by making documentaries with a fake agenda,” he said.

The Central government had earlier termed the BBC documentary propaganda against the Prime Minister and the country.

  • Pompeo claims India informed him Pakistan was preparing for nuclear attack post-Balakot surgical strike

Pompeo claims India informed him Pakistan was preparing for nuclear attack post-Balakot surgical strike

    [ad_1]

Washington: Former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has claimed that he was awakened to speak to his then Indian counterpart Sushma Swaraj who told him that Pakistan was preparing for a nuclear attack in the wake of the Balakot surgical strike in February 2019 and India is preparing its own escalatory response.

In his latest book ‘Never Give an Inch: Fighting for the America I Love’ that hit the stores on Tuesday, Pompeo says that the incident took place when he was in Hanoi for the US-North Korea Summit on February 27-28 and his team worked overnight with both New Delhi and Islamabad to avert this crisis.

“I do not think the world properly knows just how close the India-Pakistan rivalry came to spilling over into a nuclear conflagration in February 2019. The truth is, I don’t know precisely the answer either; I just know it was too close,” Pompeo writes.

India’s warplanes pounded a Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorist training camp in Balakot in Pakistan in February 2019 in response to the Pulwama terror attack that killed 40 CRPF jawans.

“I’ll never forget the night I was in Hanoi, Vietnam when – as if negotiating with the North Koreans on nuclear weapons wasn’t enough – India and Pakistan started threatening each other in connection with a decades-long dispute over the northern border region of Kashmir,” Pompeo says.

“After an Islamist terrorist attack in Kashmir- probably enabled in part by Pakistan’s lax counterterror policies – killed forty Indians, India responded with an air strike against terrorists inside Pakistan. The Pakistanis shot down a plane in a subsequent dogfight and kept the Indian pilot prisoner,” he said.

“In Hanoi, I was awakened to speak with my Indian counterpart. He believed the Pakistanis had begun to prepare their nuclear weapons for a strike. India, he informed me, was contemplating its own escalation. I asked him to do nothing and give us a minute to sort things out (sic),” Pompeo writes in his book, which wrongly refers to Swaraj as “he”.

“I began to work with Ambassador (then National Security Advisor John) Bolton, who was with me in the tiny secure communications facility in our hotel. I reached the actual leader of Pakistan, (Army chief) General (Qamar Javed) Bajwa, with whom I had engaged many times. I told him what the Indians had told me. He said it wasn’t true,” Pompeo says.

“As one might expect, he believed the Indians were preparing their nuclear weapons for deployment. It took us a few hours – and remarkably good work by our teams on the ground in New Delhi and Islamabad – to convince each side that the other was not preparing for nuclear war,” the 59-year-old top former American diplomat wrote in his book.

There was no immediate comment from the Ministry of External Affairs on Pompeo’s claims.

“No other nation could have done what we did that night to avoid a horrible outcome. As with all diplomacy, the people working the problem set matter a great deal, at least in the short run. I was fortunate to have great team members in place in India, none more so than Ken Juster, an incredibly capable ambassador. Ken loves India and its people,” he said.

“And, most of all, he loves the American people and worked his tail off for us every day. My most senior diplomat, David Hale, had also been the US ambassador to Pakistan and knew that our relationship with India was a priority,” Pompeo said.

“General McMaster and Admiral Philip Davidson, the head of what came to be renamed the US Indo-Pacific Command, understood India’s importance, too,” he said.

“Although often frustrated by the Indians, US trade representative Robert Lighthizer – a brilliant trade negotiator and a Bob Dole staff alumnus, making him a near-Kansan – was a great partner working to deepen economic ties. We all shared the view that America had to make a bold strategic effort to tighten our ties with India and break the mold with new ideas,” Pompeo writes in his book.

Abolishing cow slaughter is the cure for climate change, claims Gujarat judge

    [ad_1]

A Gujarat district court observed and claimed that abolishing cow slaughter is the ‘cure for all problems, including climate change.

“All the problems of the earth will be solved if cow slaughter is stopped,” principal district judge Samir Vinodchandra Vyas of Tapi district court made these observations while sentencing a man for life imprisonment with regards to illegally transporting 16 cows.

The man was arrested in August. Besides the life sentence, he was also fined Rs 5 lakh.

“The problems that exist today are because of the increase of the irascibility and hot temper. The only reason for the increase is the slaughter of cows. Till this is completely prohibited the saatvik climate change cannot have its effect,” Justice Vyas said.

The judge did not stop there. He claimed that according to science, houses made of cow dung are not affected by atomic radiation.

“The use of gaumutra (cow urine) is a cure for many incurable diseases,” Vyas claimed.

According to Bar ad Bench, the incident happened in November last year. Vyas says that he is disappointed there are fewer debates and discussions on the benefits of cow protection.

“Cow is not only an animal but a mother. A cow is the living planet of 68 crore holy places and 33 crore gods. The obligation of a cow on the entire universe defies description,” Justice Vyas claimed.

  • Chinese health expert claims 80 pc of people in China infected with COVID-19

Chinese health expert claims 80 pc of people in China infected with COVID-19

    [ad_1]

Beijing: About 80 per cent of China’s population has been infected with COVID-19, that is nearly eight in 10 people, a prominent government scientist has claimed, CNN reported.

Wu Zunyou, the chief epidemiologist of China’s Center for Disease Control and Prevention has claimed that the present “wave of epidemic has already infected about 80% of the people” in the country of 1.4 billion population.

Wu Zunyou’s claim comes amid concerns that the travel rush that takes place around the Lunar New Year holiday time could spread the virus to the countryside and lead to the second wave of infections.

Speaking on his personal social media account, Wu claimed that the scenario was unlikely as many people in China have already been infected with COVID-19. Wu claimed that the possibility of a large scale COVID-19 rebound is very small in China.

“In the next two to three months, the possibility of a large-scale Covid-19 rebound or a second wave of infections across the country is very small,” CNN quoted Wu Zunyou as saying.

On Thursday, Chinese health authorities said that visits to clinics for fever and COVID-19 hospitalizations in China have reduced since their peaks in late December and early January respectively.

The authorities have said that the number of people infected with COVID-19 who need critical care in hospitals has also peaked. Nearly 60,000 people infected with COVID-19 died in Chinese hospitals between December 8 and January 12 after Beijing abruptly ended its “zero-Covid” policy, CNN reported citing government data.

Earlier this month, the World Health Organization’s executive director for health emergencies Mike Ryan said that the numbers released by China “under-represent the true impact of the disease” with regards to hospital, ICU admissions and deaths.

Meanwhile, more than 26 million passenger trips were taken on the eve of the Lunar New Year, CNN reported citing Chinese state broadcaster CCTV reported. Over 4.1 million people travelled by train and 756,000 people travelled by air for holiday reunions on the day prior to the start of the Lunar New Year, as per the news report.

China’s road transport system registered over 20 million passenger trips on the eve of the Lunar New Year, a rise of 55.1 per cent witnessed from 2022, CNN cited CCTV report. As of Friday, China’s transport system managed more than 560 million passenger trips in the first 15 days of the 40-day ongoing Spring Festival travel.

  • Nadhim Zahawi claims error with his taxes ‘careless not deliberate’

Nadhim Zahawi claims error with his taxes ‘careless not deliberate’

    [ad_1]

The Tory party chair, Nadhim Zahawi, has said HMRC concluded his tax errors were “careless and not deliberate” after reports that he paid a penalty as part of a multimillion-pound settlement.

The former chancellor, who still attends Rishi Sunak’s cabinet, released a statement to “address some of the confusion about my finances” after it emerged he had agreed to pay millions to the tax agency in December.

Zahawi’s comments came after the Guardian reported he had paid a 30% penalty as part of an estimated total tax bill of almost £5m.

He said: “As a senior politician I know that scrutiny and propriety are important parts of public life. Twenty-two years ago I co-founded a company called YouGov.

“I’m incredibly proud of what we achieved. It is an amazing business that has employed thousands of people and provides a world-beating service.

“When we set it up, I didn’t have the money or the expertise to go it alone. So I asked my father to help. In the process, he took founder shares in the business in exchange for some capital and his invaluable guidance.

“Twenty-one years later, when I was being appointed chancellor of the exchequer, questions were being raised about my tax affairs. I discussed this with the Cabinet Office at the time.

“Following discussions with HMRC, they agreed that my father was entitled to founder shares in YouGov, though they disagreed about the exact allocation. They concluded that this was a ‘careless and not deliberate’ error.”

Penalties are applied if someone does not pay the correct tax at the right time.

“So that I could focus on my life as a public servant, I chose to settle the matter and pay what they said was due, which was the right thing to do,” he said.

“Additionally, HMRC agreed with my accountants that I have never set up an offshore structure, including Balshore Investments, and that I am not the beneficiary of Balshore Investments.

“This matter was resolved prior to my appointments as chancellor of the duchy of Lancaster and subsequently chairman of the party I love so much. When I was appointed by the prime minister, all my tax affairs were up to date.”

Labour’s deputy leader, Angela Rayner, called for an explanation earlier on Saturday. “I believe his position is untenable,” she said. “If he’s lied and misled the public and HMRC regarding his tax affairs then I think his position is untenable.”
