ED raids BYJU’s; claims it remitted Rs 9754 cr to foreign jurisdictions

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has conducted search and seizure operations at three premises of Raveendaran Byju and his company ‘Think & Learn Private Limited’ in Bengaluru under the provisions of Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA), an official said on Saturday.

The company runs a popular online education portal by the name of BYJU’s. During the searches, various incriminating documents and digital data were seized.

“FEMA searches also revealed that the company has received foreign direct investment to the tune of Rs 28,000 crore between 2011 and 2023. Further, the company has also remitted Rs 9754 crore to various foreign jurisdictions during the same period in the name of overseas direct investment,” said the official.

    MS Education Academy

According to the ED, the company has booked around Rs 944 crore in the name of advertisement and marketing expenses, including the amount remitted to foreign jurisdiction. It alleged that the company has not prepared its financial statements since financial year 2020-21 and has not got the accounts audited which is mandatory.

“Hence, the genuineness of the figures provided by the company are being cross examined from the banks. Investigation against the platform was initiated on the basis of various complaints received from various private persons. During an investigation conducted by the probe agency, several summons were issued to the founder and CEO Raveendaran Byju. However, he always remained evasive and never appeared during the investigation,” said the official.

Meanwhile, BYJU’S legal team spokesperson said that the recent visit by officials from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to one of their offices in Bangalore was related to a routine inquiry under FEMA.

“We have been completely transparent with the authorities and have provided them with all the information they have requested. We have nothing but the utmost confidence in the integrity of our operations, and we are committed to upholding the highest standards of compliance and ethics. We will continue to work closely with the authorities to ensure that they have all the information they need, and we are confident that this matter will be resolved in a timely and satisfactory manner,” he said.

Underlining that it is business as usual, the spokesperson said, “We are committed to delivering high-quality educational products and services to our customers across India and the world.”

Further investigation in the matter is on.

  • Hugh Grant claims the Sun burgled his flat to obtain private information

Hugh Grant claims the Sun burgled his flat to obtain private information

    [ad_1]

Hugh Grant has claimed the Sun burgled his flat and placed a tracking device in his car in an attempt to obtain stories about his personal life.

The actor appeared at the high court on Thursday for a hearing which set out his allegations that the Sun also tapped landline telephones and hacked his voicemails.

In a witness statement to the court, Grant said: “My claim concerns unlawful acts committed by the Sun, including burglaries to order, the breaking and entering of private property in order to obtain private information through bugging, landline tapping, phone hacking and the use of private investigators to do all these and other illegal things against me.”

Grant said that in 2011 his London flat was broken into, with the front door forced off its hinges but nothing stolen. He says the following day a story appeared in the Sun that “detailed the interior of the flat, including the signs of a domestic row”.

Grant said at that time he had no idea who had carried out the break-in: “I had no evidence that this burglary was carried out or commissioned on the instruction of the press, let alone the Sun.”

In his witness statement, the actor claims he was prompted to launch his latest legal claim after being passed information which “showed, for the first time, evidence that the Sun had targeted unlawful activity at me and my associates directly”.

Grant said: “I found it astonishing that the Sun carried out these unlawful acts against me at a time when I was preparing to give evidence to a public inquiry on press ethics. Of course, all of this was concealed from me at the time.”

Grant also alleges that during the 2000s the Sun employed private investigators to break into two properties connected to his film production company and his ex-girlfriend Liz Hurley. The actor claims these burglaries were carried out with “knowledge and approval of Rebekah Brooks who was editor of the Sun at the time”.

His claim is being dealt with alongside a similar legal case brought by Prince Harry. Rupert Murdoch’s News Group Newspapers, the parent company of the Sun, denies all the allegations and says no illegal behaviour ever took place at the Sun.

A spokesperson for the company said: “The Sun strongly refutes the allegation that it ever commissioned anyone to break into Hugh Grant’s home.”

The court also heard claims about how the Sun allegedly obtained details of Grant’s first child, despite the child’s mother giving birth under a fake name to try to keep it out of the media. Grant alleges the tabloid obtained the fake name using “blagging or … bribery”.

He alleges that a senior reporter at the paper commissioned the “blagging” of private information about individuals including “the child of a former prime minister, a very senior female member of the royal family and victims of terrorist atrocities”.

It is trying to block both cases from going to a public trial on the basis that both Grant and Harry waited too long to file their legal paperwork. They argue that they were slow to file their claims because the newspaper publisher concealed the behaviour of its staff.

Grant has already received a financial settlement in 2012 from News Group Newspapers over phone hacking at its now-defunct News of the World newspaper. This case is a separate claim alleging illegal behaviour took place at the Sun, including when Brooks – now the chief executive of News UK – was editor of the newspaper.

Grant claims he only learned in 2022 that the break-in at his flat had been carried out on behalf of the Sun, after talking to the private investigator Gavin Burrows.

Burrows’s evidence is also being used by several claimants in a parallel series of phone-hacking cases being brought against the publisher of the Daily Mail – although the private investigator has since attempted to recant some of his allegations in that separate set of legal proceedings.

Grant’s witness statement concludes: “I have invested a great deal of time in my campaign work for a better and ethical press … the defendant clearly considers itself above the law and is using the law now in a way I believe it was never intended, that is to further cover up and conceal what it has done.

“I strongly believe that cannot be allowed to happen and that what it has done must be brought to light.”

Complaint against Telangana Health Dir for ‘unscientific’ claims

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The Forum for Good Governance on Tuesday sent a complaint to the Telangana chief secretary against the Telangana Director of the Medical and Health department Dr. G Srinivasa Rao, stating that he is “unfit for the position due to his unscientific views” about medicine.

The letter by the FFGG secretary Padmanabha Reddy pointed out that in the past the Telangana Director of Medical and Health department had made several statements indicating his unscientific views and “lack of faith” in modern medicine.

The letter also alleged that Rao is making the comments in “bad taste”, seeking limelight amid the rumours that he is going to enter politics soon.

“During Christmas celebrations he stated in full public glare that Covid-19 is controlled in the state because of the grace of god (Jesus) and not because of mass vaccination program of the government,” stated the letter. It also said that Rao’s comments are an insult to the massive vaccination program taken up by the Telangana government.

Forum For Good Governance also recalled that the the Health Director’s statements from February 12 that he grew up under the influence of Naxalites in the Badrachalam area.  “Rao said that he held the stethoscope by mistake. If I were to hold a gun, I would have been killed by now, he stated,” wrote the FFGG secretary in the letter.

Padmanabh Reddy also stated that on April 17, during an iftar dinner after offering namaz, Rao said that in his childhood he suffered an injury after which when he was taken to a hospital where the doctors opined that “only god could help him”. The letter said that Dr Rao said that his grandfather took him to a Masjid where the Moulana “tied him a tayath“.

“He stated that he is in the post of the health director because of the divine powers of the tayath,” said the complaint letter from Forum For Good Governance. It also stated that Rao’s statements such as
“Jesus alone controlled COVID-19” and that the “tayath cured him the when doctors could not help” sends wrong signals about medical and health activities of the government.

“If he has no faith in the modern medicine he is unfit to hold the post of Director of Health,” said Padmanabh Reddy’s letter. The FFGG requested that Rao be removed from his post and replaced by a suitable person in his place.

  • Govt Claims Have Fallen Flat: NC on ‘Power Crisis’

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: National Conference General Secretary Ali Muhammad Sagar on Tuesday said that people in Kashmir are grappling with one of the worst power crises in years and that the government claims have fallen flat.

While expressing dismay over the failure of the government in rising upto the expectations of the people, Sagar said, “People across the valley are complaining of unscheduled power cuts throughout days especially during Sehri and Iftar times. Before the onset of the holy month, the government had made tall promises about ensuring steady supply of electricity to consumers. It was claimed that enduring uninterrupted power supply during Sehri and Iftar will be a priority by the Power Development Department (PDD).”

Power bills have gone up from Rs 700 to Rs 1100 but the scenario of electricity hasn’t changed, Sagar rued adding, “Most of the city areas were reeling under darkness even during the Shab-e-Qadr observance. Had the government told people to brace for prolonged power cuts, they would have made up their mind for the predicaments. For the past one week the scenario has taken an ugly turn with the outages touching 12 hours a day. The situation in upper reaches and far-flung areas is much worse. This is the everyday story now. There are frequent power cuts throughout the day and night. Situation is the same in both metered as well as non-metered areas. It is unfortunate that the electricity is unavailable when people need it the most. All the tall claims of the government have fallen flat.” (GNS)

Judge in Proud Boys trial rejects claims of government misconduct

    [ad_1]

    capitol breach extremist plots 20085

“Pezzola has not shown how any of this relates to an element of an offense with which he is charged — or how it relates to him at all,” Kelly wrote, adding, “Nor has the evidence been suppressed. As the Court has already explained to Pezzola, he cannot base a [suppression] claim on information he has long possessed.”

As the trial of five Proud Boys — including former national chairman Enrique Tarrio — inches toward a conclusion this week, Kelly sidelined several of the most sensational allegations that Pezzola’s attorneys had lodged. Among them: that prosecutors had destroyed evidence related to the case, that they coerced false guilty pleas from other Proud Boys and that they doctored at least one report from an informant to obscure an FBI agent’s involvement.

Kelly summed up his response to these claims in a section of his order headlined: “There Is No Evidence of Government Misconduct, Let Alone Misconduct Warranting Dismissal, a Mistrial, or Other Sanctions,”

Kelly described Pezzola’s theories as “bizarre,” based on “conjecture” and other times not based on anything at all.

“At bottom, not one of Pezzola’s contentions withstands scrutiny,” Kelly wrote. “His factual premises lack support, and his legal premises cannot be squared with case law.”

In his order, Kelly also rejected claims that prosecutors had improperly withheld key evidence in the case by claiming it was classified. The Justice Department worked frantically to reclaim 80 lines of internal FBI messages that it had inadvertently provided to the defense lawyers in the case, saying they were never meant to be turned over and were likely classified. The effort prompted defense lawyers to raise questions about whether prosecutors were seeking to seal away significant exculpatory evidence under the guise of a classification issue.

Kelly rejected this speculation in his order, contending that they had no bearing on the defense’s case at all.

“The Court has reviewed the 80 messages produced to it in camera and finds — regardless of whether they were properly classified or even properly categorized as law-enforcement sensitive — that the Government had no duty to produce them to the defendants in the first place,” he wrote.

  • ED has been ‘lying’ in court, Sisodia didn’t destroy mobile phones, claims AAP leader

ED has been ‘lying’ in court, Sisodia didn’t destroy mobile phones, claims AAP leader

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Senior AAP leader Sanjay Singh on Friday accused the Enforcement Directorate of “lying” before the court and claimed that no mobile phones were destroyed by former deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia.

In March, the ED had claimed before a Delhi court that Sisodia was involved in “large scale destruction of digital evidence to impede investigation” in the Delhi excise policy case and had changed and destroyed
    14 phones.

Sisodia was arrested in a money laundering case related to the alleged excise case.

    MS Education Academy

“The Enforcement Directorate has been lying before the court all this while. They said 14 mobile phones were destroyed by Sisodia but the reality is, no mobile phones were destroyed by the former deputy chief minister,” Singh claimed.

“In fact, five out of those 14 phone are in ED and CBI custody,” the senior AAP leader added.

However, ED sources said the charge sheets in this case are based on “credible evidence” and that, the court “has taken cognisance of them.”

“According to an ED report, all the phones are functioning and five out of the 14 phones have already been seized by the ED and CBI,” AAP’s Rajya Sabha member claimed.

Lashing out at the probe agency, Singh alleged that the phone numbers listed by the ED included the ones that belonged to Sisodia’s househelp, driver and other staff.

“They have made a mockery of an investigation. Those BJP leaders who have been alleging that Manish Sisodia destroyed 14 mobile phones and ED officers who defamed the best education minister of Delhi, should apologise publicly,” Singh said.

The Senior AAP leader also read out the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) numbers of the mobile phones allegedly listed by the ED.

  • SP tweets list of criminals’, claims gangsters belonging to Yogi’s caste active in UP

SP tweets list of criminals’, claims gangsters belonging to Yogi’s caste active in UP

    [ad_1]

Lucknow: The Samajwadi Party on Friday came up with a list of alleged criminals claiming that they are “still alive, committing crime and running gangs” as they all belong to the same caste as Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

The SP also alleged that it was the BJP people who got Umesh Pal, a key witness in the 2005 killing of then Bahujan Samaj Party legislator Raju Pal, murdered.

In a tweet in Hindi, the media cell of the Samajwadi Party, said, “The murder of Umesh Pal has been done by the BJP people. The BJP may have got an immediate opportunity to polarise the votes in the (ongoing) urban local bodies’ elections and to (indulge in) communal frenzy, on the pretext of this murder. But, any BJP leader, no matter how big he is, will not be spared.”

    MS Education Academy

The SP “list” comes a day after gangster-politician Atiq Ahmad’s son Asad and his accomplice, accused in the Umesh Pal murder case, were gunned down in a shootout with the Uttar Pradesh Police, which the party alleged was a fake encounter.

The list of alleged criminals with a claimed number of cases includes names of Kuldeep Singh Sengar (Unnao, 28 cases), Brijesh Singh (Varanasi, 106 cases), Dhananjay Singh (Jaunpur, 46 cases), Raja Bhaiyya (Raghuraj Pratap Singh) (Pratapgarh, 31 cases), among others.

Referring to the list, the media cell of the Samajwadi Party, in a tweet in Hindi, said, “Are they special to Yogi? Actually, they all belong to the same caste as that of Yogi, hence, they are still alive, committing crime, running the gangs and indulging in murder, rape, loot, dacoity and extortion.”

The party also added a note in the tweet saying “the list is old, but most of the criminals in it are BJP-supported and are active”

In another tweet, the SP’s media cell said that the alleged encounter will be probed one day and the truth will be revealed.

The party also referred to the allegation made by Atiq Ahmad’s sister Ayesha Noori last month that Prayagraj Mayor Abhilasha Gupta Nandi had conspired to kill Umesh Pal.

According to the allegation, this was done so that the gagster-politician’s wife Shaista Parveen would not be able to contest the next mayoral election.

Reacting to the allegations levelled on him, Nandi in a tweet in Hindi had said, “The baseless allegations are only an unsuccessful attempt to divert attention from the main issue and mislead….Linking this with the mayoral elections is not only irrelevant but also laughable,” he said in another tweet.

In another tweet, the SP said, “Yogi Adityanath was very happy with Atiq Ahmad in the Phulpur Lok Sabha by-election (in 2018). Atiq was helping the BJP and the party was helping him.

“A minister in the Yogi government borrowed money from Atiq’s family and to do away with him, Nand Gopal Gupta ‘Nandi’ took the support of the government in a bid to grab the borrowed money/partnership,” the tweet read.

Umesh Pal and his two police security guards were shot dead on February 24 outside his home in Prayagraj’s Dhoomanganj.

Based on a complaint lodged by Umesh Pal’s wife Jaya Pal, a case was registered on February 25 against Atiq Ahmad, his brother Ashraf, Parveen, two sons, aides Guddu Muslim and Ghulam, and nine others.

On March 28, an MP/MLA court held Atiq Ahmad and two others guilty in the 2006 Umesh Pal kidnapping case and sentenced them to life imprisonment. That was Ahmad’s first conviction even though more than 100 cases have been registered against him.

The 60-year-old former Samajwadi Party MP was brought from Sabarmati Jail in Gujarat by road for a hearing in the case in Prayagraj.

In 2006, Atiq Ahmad and his aides abducted Umesh Pal and forced him to give a statement in court in their favour. Umesh Pal had registered a complaint in this regard.

No Shiv Sena worker involvement in Babri Masjid demolition, claims Maha minister

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Maharashtra minister and senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Chandrakant Patil on Monday said not a single worker of the Shiv Sena was near the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya when it was brought down by the Bajrang Dal and Durga Vahini on December 6, 1992.

Patil, minister of higher and technical education in the Eknath Shinde government and a former Maharashtra BJP chief, made the comment while speaking to a regional news channel.

Incidentally, Shiv Sena founder late Bal Thackeray has often been quoted as saying that he was proud if any of his Sainiks took part in the demolition of the disputed structure.

    MS Education Academy

“I was placed there by the Bajrang Dal for three-four months to facilitate kar sevaks arriving in Ayodhya. People participating were either from Bajrang Dal, VHP or Durga Vahini. Former Bihar state deputy CM (and senior BJP leader) Sushil Kumar Modi, legislator Harendra Kumar and I were given the task to manage the kar sevaks and ensure their safe passage,” Patil claimed.

“We three were working there as national general secretaries. The RSS’ strength was behind us but it did not participate openly. It had distributed its work to like minded organisations,” Patil claimed.

Patil further said Shiv Sena (UBT) Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut keeps talking about the Babri Masjid demolition, adding he wondered if the latter was even there at the temple town in Uttar Pradesh at the time.

He also took a swipe at Uddhav Thackeray for accusing Chief Minister Eknath Shinde of stealing the legacy of Bal Thackeray.

The late Shiv Sena founder was not the property of anyone and was someone who was hugely respected by the people, Patil added.

“Balasaheb is the property of all Hindus and everyone is free to use his name (legacy),” said Patil.

The Shiv Sena split in June last year after the rebellion by Shinde, who got the party name and ‘bow and arrow’ symbol, while Uddhav Thackeray’s faction was christened Shiv Sena (UBT) with a flaming torch as its symbol.

Depending on SC order, Maha civic polls could take place by Oct-Nov, claims BJP minister

    [ad_1]

Pune: Maharashtra Minister and senior BJP leader Chandrakant Patil on Monday said he believed civic polls in the state would be held in October-November if the Supreme Court gives it order on reservation for Other Backward Classes as well as ward delimitation by May.

Speaking to reporters, Patil said if the decisions on these matters come by May, then delimitation and other aspects can be carried out by the Election Commission during the monsoons, when it would not be feasible to hold polls, and the civic elections can take place by October-November.

The SC will begin its one-and-half month long recess on May 9, Patil, a former state Bharatiya Janata Party chief, said.

Civic polls in Mumbai, Pune, Kalyan Dombivali, Pune, Pimpri Chinchwad, Vasai-Virar, Kolhapur, Aurangabad, and Navi Mumbai are due since early 2022 but were not held because of the coronavirus pandemic.

These municipal corporations are currently under administrators.
