Pompeo says Israel has biblical claim to Palestine and is ‘not an occupying nation’

    [ad_1]

Mike Pompeo, the former US secretary of state, has defended Israel’s decades-long control of the Palestinian territories by claiming that the Jewish state has a biblical claim to the land and is therefore not occupying it.

Pompeo told the One Decision podcast that his religious beliefs, US strategic interests and his view of the Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, as a “known terrorist” underpinned his support as the Trump administration’s top diplomat for the shift in US policy away from mediating a two-state solution and toward more openly siding with Israel.

“[Israel] is not an occupying nation. As an evangelical Christian, I am convinced by my reading of the Bible that 3,000 years on now, in spite of the denial of so many, [this land] is the rightful homeland of the Jewish people,” he said.

Pompeo, who referred to the occupied West Bank by its Israeli name of Judea and Samaria, declined to support a two-state solution of an independent Palestine alongside Israel – an increasingly diminishing prospect after years of failed negotiations and the rise to power of politicians in Israel who advocate annexing the occupied territories.

“I’m for an outcome that guarantees Israeli security and makes the lives better for everyone in the region,” he said.

Pompeo, who once suggested that God sent Trump to save Israel, was speaking ahead of publication of a book, Never Give an Inch: Fighting for the America I Love, that has fuelled speculation he is laying the groundwork for a presidential run.

As secretary of state he reversed a number of longstanding US policies, including overturning legal advice from 1978 that declared Israel’s settlements in the West Bank “inconsistent with international law”. Most western governments, such as the UK, say the settlements and Israel’s annexation of occupied East Jerusalem are a breach of the Geneva conventions and are therefore illegal.

Pompeo was Trump’s CIA director before his appointment as secretary of state in 2018. He played an instrumental role in an administration that recognised Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and moved the US embassy to that city from Tel Aviv. The move was widely criticised, including by Washington’s allies, as pre-empting a final agreement between Israel and the Palestinians.

Pompeo said it is in the US’s interests to back Israel whatever its policies, and he blamed the Palestinians for the failure of peace negotiations.

“What’s in America’s best interest? Is it to sit and wait for Abu Mazen [Abbas], a known terrorist who’s killed lots and lots of people, including Americans … to draw a line on a map? That’s what the state department would do,” he said.

“The previous secretary of state ran back and forth from Tel Aviv to Ramallah and tried to draw lines on a map. We said: ‘That’s not in America’s best interest. Let’s go create peace,’ and we did.”

Pompeo was part of the Trump administration team that negotiated the Abraham accords normalisation agreements between Israel and several formerly hostile countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Morocco and Sudan. At the time he said the accords were part of the administration’s efforts to ensure that “that this Jewish state remains”.

“I am confident that the Lord is at work here,” he said.

  • Pence moves to claim culture war lane before DeSantis gets there

Pence moves to claim culture war lane before DeSantis gets there

    [ad_1]

    pence 43194

Iowa’s Linn-Mar Community School District, which educates close to 8,000 children just northeast of Cedar Rapids, is now at the center of a Republican school takeover campaign. And Pence and conservative groups are fighting in court to stop the school system from enforcing a policy that directs educators to protect the gender identities of their students on campus, raising questions about whether families have a right to know about their child’s requests.

The lawsuit showcases Pence’s culture-driven education agenda and dovetails with his decades-long focus on everything from railing about adultery to criticizing Disney’s “Mulan” in the 1990s. Most of all, the case is tied to a state in the American heartland still crucial to the Republican presidential nominating calendar.

While the conservative Parents Defending Education organization launched the lawsuit last year, the Pence-backed Advancing American Freedom organization and a coalition of Christian groups have filed legal briefs similarly opposed to the school district’s policy. A group of Republican state attorneys general have also supported halting the policy in court.

But the legal battle is also the focus of a Pence political initiative — funded with an initial budget of $1 million — that aides say will utilize digital advertising, rallies and volunteer advocacy efforts to advocate for parental rights policies.

The focus, as Pence characterized it, is a broader battle over young people that has engulfed schools and colleges.

“We’re told that we must not only tolerate the left’s obsessions with race and sex and gender but we must earnestly and enthusiastically participate or face severe consequences,” Pence said Wednesday. “Nowhere is the problem more severe, or the need for leadership more urgent, than in our public school classrooms.”

Prominent Democrats and LGBTQ advocacy groups denounced the Pence-style agenda on Wednesday, a sign that disagreements over what children learn and who they are will fuel both parties in the runup to 2024.

“It’s disappointing that someone who professes a deep love for the U.S. Constitution would so venomously assault the rights of the most marginalized,” American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten said in a statement. “Sadly, Mike Pence is mimicking the Trump-DeSantis playbook, rather than blazing a path that builds on the patriotism and courage he demonstrated on January 6, 2021, to thwart the overthrow of our democracy.”

Illinois Democratic Gov. JB Pritzker, during his budget address Wednesday, said the “real intention” of the broader conservative ideological battle “is to marginalize people and ideas they don’t like.”

Correct pronouns can be a lifesaving prospect for transgender and nonbinary youth, who are more vulnerable than their peers to suicidal ideations, according to The Trevor Project’s 2022 report on LGBTQ youth mental health. The suicide risk is higher for LGBTQ kids ages 13 to 17, the group’s survey found.

“The only thing radical is to suggest that schools have a duty to forcibly out transgender students to their parents, without regard to their safety, and to turn a blind eye to harassment by their peers, in the name of free speech,” said Peter Renn, senior counsel at the Lambda Legal gay rights organization.

Pence is comfortable in this space, dating back to his time as a talk radio show host and columnist, when he criticized “Mulan” for depicting women in the military. As governor of Indiana, his education agenda focused primarily on advancing charter schools and vouchers.

Last year, Pence issued what he called a “freedom agenda” that included “patriotic education” for high school students to have knowledge of the Federalist Papers and the Constitution. But it was the battle over his Religious Freedom and Restoration Act — a measure that critics said would have resulted in the LGBTQ discrimination — that became one of the hallmarks of his gubernatorial administration. The episode caused Indiana to lose $60 million in convention business.

Then, in April 2022, the Linn-Mar Community School District board approved policies and regulations intended to support students who are transgender, nonbinary or questioning their gender identity. The policy would allow affected students to ask administrators or counselors for a “Gender Support Plan,” and let students agree whether their parents or guardians would be part of subsequent meetings to discuss the request.

The policy would have teachers ask students how they wanted to be addressed in class and in communications with their families. It noted that “intentional” or “persistent” refusals by staff and other students to respect a student’s gender identity would violate school anti-bullying and harassment rules.

Linn-Mar’s policy also stated that parents and guardians would have the right to review their student’s education records, in accordance with federal law.

Parents Defending Education filed a federal lawsuit in August on behalf of seven unnamed parents who alleged the policy violated their constitutional rights by depriving them of information related to their students, and control over decisions related to their gender identity, while also threatening to illegally discipline students based on their speech.

A federal district court judge in September rejected a request to halt the policy while the lawsuit proceeded in court, prompting an appeal to an 8th Circuit panel that was heard Wednesday.

“I believe it’s an issue, not that the majority of the American people stand with us on, but I think it’s got to be almost every parent in America,” Pence said Wednesday. “You do not craft a gender transition plan for my child without my knowledge or consent. I believe the American people believe that.”

Pence’s path to his party’s nomination centers on reaching Evangelical conservatives in Iowa and South Carolina, early primary states where he has lavished voters and activists with attention. After making the Minneapolis speech, he traveled to Cedar Rapids, where he rallied with parents in opposition to policies like the Linn-Mar Community School District’s. The school district did not respond to requests for comment.

Pence’s splash in eastern Iowa likely resonates in that part of the state, where coverage of the parental rights movement has saturated local media, said David Kochel, a veteran Iowa Republican strategist.

“The fact that he’s moving towards the race and he’s in Iowa as opposed to Tallahassee, it’s more intentionally political in terms of the ’24 race,” Kochel said. “He’s taking advantage of an opportunity in Iowa that DeSantis has chosen not to take advantage of yet, but they’re gonna end up in basically the same place on the issue.”

Morbi Bridge tragedy: Civic body, councillors claim innocence

    [ad_1]

Morbi: The Morbi municipality on Wednesday passed a resolution saying the civic body never gave its approval to hand over a suspension bridge in the town to Oreva Group, a day after the Gujarat government sought a fresh reply to a show-cause notice over the bridge collapse that killed 135 people.

In the general board meeting held today to discuss this issue, 41 of 52 councillors of the BJP-ruled municipality submitted a separate reply asserting that the majority of the councillors were not aware of the agreement under which the bridge was handed over to Oreva Group by the municipality for maintenance and operation.

The Gujarat government had on Tuesday asked the Morbi municipality to submit a fresh reply to a show-cause notice as to why it should not be dissolved for failing to discharge its duties before the collapse of the bridge that claimed 135 lives last year.

The Urban Development Department had said in a letter to the chief of the municipality that the civic body should submit a written reply, duly approved by its general body, by February 16.

The show-cause notice was issued on January 18 and the state did not accept a reply dated February 7 sent by the municipality’s lawyer.

In view of the government’s new deadline, the municipality had called an urgent general body meeting on Wednesday, said N K Muchhal, in-charge chief officer of Morbi.

“During today’s meeting, two separate replies, one from the civic body and another from councillors, were submitted. These replies will be sent to the state government for further action,” Muchhal told reporters after the meeting.

Jayrajsinh Jadeja, vice president of the municipality, said the office bearers of the civic body, including the president, vice president and standing committee chairman, are “innocent” because the proposal and subsequent agreement to hand over the bridge to Oreva Group in March last year was never approved through a general board meeting.

“We are not guilty because the agreement to hand over the bridge to Oreva Group was never discussed or approved in the general board meeting. Moreover, we have also mentioned in our reply that Morbi municipality was ruled by Congress when the first agreement was approved by the board (in 2007) for the maintenance of the bridge,” said Jadeja.

On behalf of the 41 councillors, Bhavik Jaria told reporters that 49 of 52 councillors were not aware of the agreement signed by the Morbi municipality with Oreva Group in March last year for the maintenance and operation of the bridge.

“In our reply, we have stated that 49 of 52 councillors were not aware of this agreement. As per the law, the municipality’s permission is needed for such agreements. But, we were not informed about it. Even the Special Investigation Team (SIT) never said in its findings that the entire civic body was responsible for this tragedy,” said Jaria.

The ill-fated bridge, which collapsed on October 30 last year, was maintained and operated by Oreva Group under an agreement signed with the Morbi municipality.

In its show-cause notice of January 18, the government wanted to know why the civic body did not take note of the issues raised by Oreva Group between 2018 and 2020 about the dilapidated condition of the bridge and the possibility of a serious accident if it remained open to the public.

Moreover, the municipality did not take any concrete action to take over the bridge from the company in 2017 after the completion of the previous contract despite knowing the situation of the bridge, the notice said.

The state government had on December 13 told the Gujarat High Court during the hearing of a public interest litigation (PIL) that it had decided to dissolve the municipality.

AP: YSRCP govt denounces opposition claim of poor state financials

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The Andhra Pradesh government on Tuesday took strong exception to the alleged misinformation campaign undertaken by the opposition and its associated media regarding the financial health of the state.

Duvvuri Krishna, Special Secretary to CM (Finance and Economic Affairs), shared details of the recent Reserve Bank of India (RBI) report containing details of outstanding liabilities of the state over the last four-year period.

Highlighting how the state exchequer was burdened in 2019, Duvvuri Krishna stated, “Just days before the 2019 general election to the Legislative Assembly of Andhra Pradesh, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) government hurriedly disbursed scheme related amounts to lure voters. In this regard, the TDP government raised a whopping ₹5,000 crores through SDL auction on a single day on 9th April, 2019, just two days before election. This would possibly be the highest amount of debt any state government would have raised on a single day.”

Sharing bits from the RBI report, Krishna shared that it was a herculean task for the YSRCP government to improve the health of the state’s finances.

“The outstanding liabilities had increased by 138.84% during the 5-year TDP rule. This translates to a compounded annual growth rate of the liabilities of 19.02% during 2014-19. As against that, the increase in liabilities during the period of the YSRCP Government increased by only 62.78% during the 4-year period of YSRCP government. This translates to a compounded annual growth rate of the liabilities of 13.55% during 2014-19,” Krishna said.

Referring to the RBI report, Krishna said, “In 2014, liabilities of the TDP Government was ₹1,13,797 crores as per the RBI report which increased ₹2,71,797.56 crores in 2019. This is an increase of 238%. Compared to this, the debt of the YSRCP government has not doubled during the first 4 years of the present government, as alleged. It has only increased by 62.78%.”

Sri Lanka refutes TN leader’s claim on LTTE chief’s well-being, calls it a joke

    [ad_1]

Colombo: Sri Lanka on Monday dismissed as a “joke” a top Tamil nationalist leader’s claim that LTTE supremo Velupillai Prabhakaran, who was killed in 2009 by the island nation’s military, was still alive.

Pazha Nedumaran, a noted nationalist leader in Tamil Nadu, told reporters in Thanjavur that the leader of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) “is doing well” and a “conducive atmosphere prevails for him to appear now.” Sri Lanka’s defence ministry dismissed Nedumaran’s claim as a joke.

“It is confirmed that he was killed on 19 May 2009. The DNA has proved it,” Colonel Nalin Herath, Sri Lanka’s defence ministry spokesman told PTI.

In a bitterly fought campaign that began in 1983, Sri Lanka’s military ended the nearly three-decade brutal civil war in the island nation in May 2009, by killing the leaders of the LTTE.

The LTTE was fighting for an independent state for the Tamilians in Sri Lanka’s North and Eastern provinces.

Though the exact date when Prabhakaran was killed by the Sri Lankan Army was not known, his death was announced on May 19, 2009.

The then-president Mahinda Rajapaksa on May 18, 2009 declared the end of a 26-year war in which over 1,00,000 people were killed and millions of Sri Lankans, mainly minority Tamils were displaced as refugees inside the country and abroad.

Make Bulldozer Last Resort, Give People Chance To Prove Their Claim: Omar to J&K Admin

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR:  Stating that the ongoing demolition drive going on across J&K has triggered a wave of frustration and chaos among people, National Conference vice-president Omar Abdullah Monday advocated that the government should make the bulldozer its last resort, give people a chance to prove their claim and issue proper notices to the people having illegal possession of State land. He was quick to add that the National Conference was not against those who have grabbed State land but “a proper procedure should be followed.”

“In J&K, there is chaos everywhere. Bulldozers are being sent everywhere to demolish houses, complexes and buildings. But nobody knows what is the procedure and on what basis this demolition drive is being conducted,” said Omar while addressing a press conference in Srinagar, as per news agency KNO.

He said his sister approached the High Court with regard to the proposed demolition of the Gupkar house of Omar and was told by the government before the Court that the list making rounds in the media are “forged.” “Given the government response in the court, I urge the government to make the genuine list of people who have grabbed State land public,” he said.

Omar suggested a slew of measures to the government with regard to the demolition drive. “No government is supposed to bring trouble for the people. Bulldozers should be the last resort. The Government must issue proper notices to those who, according to it, have grabbed State land and given them at least six weeks’ time to prove their claim on land under them and show the documents,” he said. “In our case, my sister produced the documents before the HC that states that the lease of Gupkar house is still active and has some years to expire. Likewise, people should be given time to present the documents and let the revenue team verify the same. If after proper verification land under anybody is found under illegitimate possession, then a bulldozer can be used for sure.”

Omar said that the government should also make a public “genuine list of people who have occupied State land.” “It seems that the ongoing drive is aimed at creating a wedge between communities. This drive lacks proper procedure,” he said.

He said in the case of demolition of NC leader Ali Muhammad Sagar, he found that no notice was served. “There is a procedure that if the person doesn’t receive the notice, the same is fixed on the front portion of the gate. Nowhere this is being done,” he said, adding, “Officials accompanying bulldozer at Nedous, told my relatives that they had pressure from the top and have to do something to show their bosses.”

Omar said in many areas the ongoing demolition-cum-eviction drive is becoming a “hub of corruption.” “I got many calls from several areas with people saying that they are being told to pay Rs 1 or 1.5 lakh to get their names removed from the list,” he said.

He said that NC MPs will try to raise the issue in the Parliament if they are given time to speak.

To a query that whey NC would approach the court on the issue, Omar said that he has suggested some measures to the government and that if the J&K administration fails to give positive response, they would surely consult lawyers and discuss the future course.

Indonesia claim historic first victory to end U19 Women’s T20 WC on high

    [ad_1]

Benoni: Indonesia on Friday scripted history as they claimed their first-ever victory in ICC global tournament after beating Zimbabwe by three wickets in a play-off match to finish the Under19 Women’s T20 World Cup on a high, here.

Indonesia got off to a flier after being asked to bowl first, as captain Ni Luh Dewi bowled both of the Zimbabwe openers for golden ducks in the first three balls of the innings. And the skipper picked up a third wicket in her second over to leave the score at 8/3 and with Indonesia well on top.

Zimbabwe hunkered down to try and set some sort of a platform, and it somewhat reaped rewards later in the innings despite none of the top six scorings more than 13.

Tawana Marumani and Danielle Meikle were the players to build on the platform down the order, with both scoring 20 from 19 balls to lift their side to 86/8 from the 20 overs and something to work with.

That total could have been slightly higher were it not for the outstanding Dewi, who came back to remove both of the set batters and complete the tournament’s first five-wicket-haul.

Early wickets were also a feature of the chase, with three back in the hutch with just 23 runs on the board in the opening four overs as Kelis Ndhlovu (who finished with 3/8 from four overs) produced some magic with the ball.

Dewi’s 14 from 13 did provide some early impetus, and a 31-run partnership between Thersiana We and Gusti Ulansari moved Indonesia close to a famous win. But Zimbabwe threatened to come back in the see-saw encounter when Chipo Moyo (3/12) took two wickets in an over to give her side hope.

However, Indonesia’s numbers eight and nine got them over the line, with Ni Indriyani unbeaten on 9 not out from 11 and Ni Suarniasih scoring the winning run in her run-a-ball 12 not out.
Indonesia might not have won the inaugural ICC Under19 Women’s T20 World Cup, but they definitely won many hearts during their stay in South Africa.

Brief scores: Zimbabwe 86 for 8 in 20 overs (Danielle Meikle 20, Tawana Marumani 20, Adel Zimunu 13, Ni Luh Ketut Wesika Ratna Dewi five for 18, Ni Kadek Ariani two for 7) lost to Indonesia 87 for 7 in 18 overs (Ni Luh Ketut Wesika Ratna Dewi 14, Thersiana Penu We 14, Ni Made Suarniasih 12 not out, Kelis Ndhlovu three for 8, Chipo Moyo three for 12) by three wickets.
