Paris votes to ban rental electric scooters from city streets

    [ad_1]

Paris: In a big blow to the electric mobility market, the city has voted to ban rental e-scooters from the streets.

An overwhelming number of around 90 percent of votes cast supported a ban, official results showed.

Paris was a pioneer when it introduced e-scooters in 2018, reports the Guardian.

    MS Education Academy

In a referendum organized by Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo on Sunday, residents voted 89 percent against keeping shared e-scooters in the city.

Paris has almost 15,000 e-scooters across its streets, operated by companies including Lime, Dott, and Tier.

The three companies will now have to pull their fleets out of the city by September 1.

Hidalgo, who originally welcomed shared e-scooters to Paris, has pushed for the capital to become a more livable 15-minute city, reports TechCrunch.

Hidalgo said that scooters are the cause of a lot of accidents and that the business model was too expensive to be sustainable, with a 10-minute ride costing about 5 euros.

According to reports, a 31-year-old Italian woman was killed in June 2021 after being hit by an e-scooter with two passengers onboard while walking along the Seine.

Dott, Lime and Tier said in a joint statement that the low voter turnout affected the results of the referendum.

Only 103,084 people turned out to vote, which is about 7.5 percent of registered Paris voters.

The ban will not have an effect on the e-bikes offered by shared micro-mobility companies, which will remain in the city.

Telangana: Modi is a compulsive liar, says BRS city in-charge

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) Hyderabad district in-charge Dasoju Sravan dubbed Prime Minister Narendra Modi a “compulsive liar” and said that to ensure peace in Telangana, ‘KCR sarkar’ has to be brought back for the third time.

Speaking at the Athmeeya Sammelan held at Adikmet in Musheerabad constituency on Sunday, Daosju said, “It is extremely unfortunate that we have a Prime Minister who lies in case of every important issue. PM Modi lies about his educational qualification, sheds fake tears before every election that his life is in danger. Never have we seen such a compulsive liar in the political history of India”.

“He has cheated people on Rs 15 lakh every home promise, brought in disastrous demonetisation, looting people by increasing petrol, diesel, LPG prices and protecting his friend Adani. People should put an end to the atrocious rule of PM Modi,” he alleged.

    MS Education Academy

Dasoju further said, “No other state can come even remotely close to Telangana. In fact all BJP-ruled states are lagging behind the state in welfare, development, Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth, agriculture production and other areas”.

He said that it was the responsibility of every Telangana citizen to stop the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

He said that people of Musheerabad are politically aware and progressive. “It is heartening that Musheerabad people have stood by KCR during the Telangana movement. The party cadre has to ensure that information regarding the government’s programs is taken to each home so that the party comes to power again”.

Hyderabad: Case booked after 2 youth allegedly attacked in Old City

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The Charminar police booked a case against a group of Muslim youngsters for allegedly attacking two persons belonging to another community on Thursday night. The incident took place when the Sri Ram Navami Shobha Yatra was held by right-wing groups in a grand way, and passed-off relatively peacefully.

Sources said the two youngsters who were part of the Sri Ram Navami festival rallies stopped near a mosque closr to the Shehran Market and raised slogans when prayers were going on. An argument happened between the local Namazis and the two youngsters after which the duo were attacked and reportedly chased away.

The police late in the night booked a case under sections 341, 323 r/w 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and investigation is ongoing.

While the Ram Navami procession in Hyderabad passed-off peacefully otherwise for this incident, a portrait of Godse appeared at the suspended Goshamahal BJP MLA Raja Singh’s rally, which joined during the procession at Mangalhat. People who joined Singh’s fringe rally waved photos of Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin, now a beloved Hindutva figure.

The annual Sri Ram Navami Shobha Yatra here has become a show of strength for Hindutva groups to flex. The procession has also become a launchpad for Hindutva mascot and suspended BJP MLA Raja Singh to release new inflammatory ‘songs’ every year. In 2022, he sang a song degenerating Muslims and threatened to “kick” them out of India if they “don’t chant Ram’s name”. This year was no different.

Raja Singh as a practice has been singing songs and releasing them during the Sri Rama Navami festival each year. One of latest songs, ‘Baap Tu Baap Rahega’, was clearly a dig at the ruling government (or even the cops) for arresting him last year and putting him in the jail under the PD Act after he released a video passing derogatory comments against Prophet Muhammad. He did that in retaliation against the state got allowing comic Munawar Faurqui to hold a show.

The lyrics also make mention his PD Act detention following registration of a series of cases for making derogatory remarks against Prophet Mohammed in a video and also old cases booked against him for delivering hate speeches. The lyrics goes ‘Jail Ka Taala Tuth Gaya, Baap Tumhara Choot Gaya’. The song is of 5:10 minutes duration.

Stampede at food distribution centre kills 11 in Pakistan’s Karachi city

    [ad_1]

Karachi: At least 11 people, including women and children, were killed and several others injured in a deadly stampede at a Ramzan food distribution centre in Pakistan’s port city of Karachi on Friday, officials said.

The stampede took place after some people unknowingly stepped on a live wire where food was being distributed, leading to the tragedy.

Soon, people started pushing each other, due to which some even fell into a nearby drain, police said.

At least 11 people, including women and children, died in the stampede and several others were injured.

“Initially two persons were electrocuted after stepping on the live wire and that led to panic and stampede,” SSP Ameerullah told PTI.

“Two children and two women fell in a drain when its wall collapsed due to the rush of the people,” he said.

At least 11 other people, including women, have died while trying to get free flour from government distribution outlets in Pakistan’s Punjab province in recent days.

With the latest incident in Karachi, the death toll from stampedes across free food centres in Pakistan has risen to at least 22.

The free food distribution initiative was launched by Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif last week at a time when the country is in the midst of a severe economic crisis.

Pakistan has been negotiating with the IMF for the release of a USD 1.1 billion bailout package since February but has so far met with little success due to the stringent conditions imposed by the Washington-based lender.

The funds are part of a USD 6.5 billion bailout package the IMF approved in 2019, which analysts say is critical if Pakistan is to avoid defaulting on external debt obligations.

The weekly inflation level in Pakistan has touched an all-time high of 45 per cent.

Pakistan is scrambling to increase its forex reserves, which are currently estimated to be at USD 4.2 billion, according to the country’s central bank.

Aurangabad violence: 1 dead, 7 arrested; SRPF deployed in city

    [ad_1]

Aurangabad: As many as seven persons have been arrested following a mob attack on a police station in central Maharashtra’s Aurangabad city while an injured man died in hospital, police said on Friday.

Normalcy returned to the city, recently renamed as `Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar’, even as the government deployed five companies of the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) as a precaution.

At least 12 persons including 10 policemen were injured after a mob of around 500 people hurled stones and petrol-filled bottles when the cops tried to control the situation following a clash between two groups near the Ram temple in Kiradpura locality of Aurangabad, on the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday.

The police used tear gas and fired some plastic bullets as well as live rounds to control the mob.

Barkat Shaikh (23), Shaikh Atik (24), Saddam Shah (33), Shaikh Khaja (25), Sharik Khan (23), Syed Noor (27), all local residents, and Shaikh Saleem (25) from Buldhana district were arrested for alleged rioting, said an official of Jinsi police station where a case has been registered.

Shaikh Muniruddin (51), who had suffered injuries during the violence, died at a hospital on Thursday night, officials said, without specifying how he came to be injured.

“Security at various sensitive locations in the city has been increased. The administration has deployed five companies of SRPF and nearly 600 police personnel are on guard to maintain peace,” an official said.

Leader of Opposition in the Maharashtra Assembly Ajit Pawar said political parties, civil society and citizens must work towards ensuring peace in Aurangabad.

The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader said police are doing their work but everyone, including political parties, those in power or Opposition, civil society and common citizens should work towards ensuring peace.

Asked about the Maha Vikas Aghadi’s joint rally in Aurangabad on April 2, he said it had been planned much earlier, and leaders of the MVA constituents NCP, Congress and Shiv Sena (UBT) — are working on it.

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut alleged that violence in Aurangabad and elsewhere on Ram Navami was “government-sponsored”, and the Eknath Shinde-led Maharashtra government wanted to use the tensions as a pretext to disallow the MVA rally on April 2.

Fellow Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council Ambadas Danve contested Aurangabad MP Imtiaz Jaleel’s claim that some drug addicts were responsible for the violence.

“Drug addicts can not carry out such violence…..How can 400-500 people be drug addicts? I had got information and I had spoken about it with the commissioner multiple times. It was ignored by administration,” he claimed.

Danve also claimed that the agitation against the renaming of Aurangabad as Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and the counter-agitation supporting the renaming led to this situation. Had the agitation against the renaming not taken place, this situation would have been averted, he added.

Hyderabad: ‘Only 5% Muslims in Old City slums pursue higher edu’, says survey

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: A post-COVID-19 survey in urban slums and catchments of the Old City of Hyderabad revealed that the vicious cycle of poverty continues among the Hyderabadi Muslims living in slums in the Old City.

Muslim population roughly constitute 43-44 percent (58+ lakh) of the approximate 1.3 crore population that belongs to the city.

While 60 percent of the 58 lakhs population reside in the urban slums, 74 percent stay in rented houses and 26 percent own houses.

The Helping Hand Foundation (HHF) conducted a survey aimed at understanding the post-pandemic impact on the socio-economic status of Muslims and the reasons why a majority continues to remain economically backward.

Door-to-door visits of 5000 households including Hakeempet, Md Lines, Golconda, Sulemanagar, Chintalmet, Wadi e Mehmood, MM Pahadi, Qayamnagar, Hasan Nagar, Indiranagar, NS Kunta, Achi Reddy Nagar, Teegalkunta, Ghousenagar, Hashimabad, Jahangirabad, Murad Nagar, Asif Nagar, First Lancer, Kumarwadi, Chanchalguda, Amaanagar, Baba Nagar C block, Wadi e Mustafa, ErraKunta, Shaheenagar, Saif Colony, Osmanagar, Venkata Puram, Pahadi Sherif, Jalpally, etc in the city was carried out.

Aspects that render towards the backwardness of Muslim minorities:

    • 70 percent send children to private schools and only 14 percent attend government schools, while 7 percent go to madrasas.

    Labour & Migration

    • Unlike Muslims from other states, Hyderabad Muslims seldom migrate to greener pastures for work.
    • 25 percent of households surveyed have large families of between 3 to 6 children.
    • Skilled labour like tailors, mechanics, cooks, plumbers, electricians, carpenters, and auto drivers are 62 percent.
    • The unskilled daily wager is 25 percent.
    • Self Employed constitute about 8 percent of the workforce.
    • 37 percent of women are single bread earners for families of which 43 percent are widows, 22 percent are divorced and 37 percent are single women abandoned by spouses.
    • No presence of Muslims in construction, agri and non-agriculture farm labour in and around the city.
    • Stigma and taboo around types of jobs.

Utilization of welfare schemes & other public utilities

    • 38 percent do not have White Rations Cards.
    • Of these 22 percent are not active due to non-consumption of PDS rations, and 78 percent are rejected due to various reasons like Aadhaar Card seeding, biometrics, change of address etc.
    • This leads to ineligibility to a plethora of welfare schemes of the state and central government like Asra Pensions, PDS Rations, Aarogyasri Health Insurance, Shaadi Mubarak, 2 Bedroom Housing, and Cooking Gas Subsidies.

    Education

    • The majority of Respondents said that due to the unavailability of teachers, classes are not regular in government schools and children lose interest.

    • Diabetes, Hypertension, CAD, and Cancer top the list.
    • Our survey shows 1 in 3 adults are Overweight or Obese and half of these are already morbid /comorbid.
    • Prevalence of Hypertension is about 30 percent and diabetes is about 18 percent in adults.
    • 1 in 3 male adults has exposure to non-smoke tobacco.

    Primary Health Care

    • 50 percent of slums have Poor Sanitation, Hygiene, and access to clean water.
    • Seasonal diseases dominate as per season due to this.
    • Forex Monsoon sees a rise in water and vector-borne diseases
    • Quacks and RMPs dominate the Primary Health Care space leading to high out-of-pocket expenses.
    • 58 percent of children surveyed were found vaccinated and 42 percent did take partially or haven’t taken it.
    • 74 percent of vaccinations were done in a private setting and only 20 percent took vaccination in a government setting.
    • Our survey shows average family spends Rs 3k /month on primary health care.

    Debts & Interest

    • 65 percent families have exposure to debts & high interest rates to bridge gaps for daily essential needs like food, medicine & other essentials.
    • Interest rates of private money lenders vary from 10 to 21 percent.
    • The majority continue to service the interest component of loans for longer periods of time – thereby crunching their monthly disposable incomes.
    • High indulgence of the younger generation into loans from Online App.

    Conclusion

Muslims living in slums of Old City slums suffer from high illiteracy in adults and lack of economic opportunity, zero migration and participation of workforce in construction and non-agri farm labour.

Poverty drives their children out of school resulting in child labour. Daily wage earning and high-interest burden, income – expense deficit due to poor utilization of welfare and public utilities, high burden of chronic diseases on adults and high out of pocket health expenses are factors that hold back poor Muslim households.

    Need of the hour:

Building free schools, colleges, clinics and hospitals and not mosques and function halls with creating employment and upskilling the workforce, and behavioural changes would benefit the situation.

HHF’s Mujtaba Hasan Askari said, “Empowerment needs attention and it is the responsibility of the government, civil society and concerned citizens to work in tandem for the upliftment.”

  • Russian President Putin visits occupied city of Mariupol

Russian President Putin visits occupied city of Mariupol

    [ad_1]

    russia ukraine putin 12274

The trip also came ahead of a planned visit to Moscow by Chinese President Xi Jinping this week, expected to provide a major diplomatic boost to Putin in his confrontation with the West.

Putin arrived in Mariupol by helicopter and then drove himself around the city’s “memorial sites,” concert hall and coastline, Russian news reports said, without specifying exactly when the visit took place. They said Putin also met with local residents in the city’s Nevskyi district.

Speaking to the state RIA agency Sunday, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnulin made clear that Russia was in Mariupol to stay. He said the government hoped to finish the reconstruction of its blasted downtown by the end of the year.

“People have started to return. When they saw that reconstruction is under way, people started actively returning,” Khusnulin told RIA.

When Moscow fully captured the city in May, an estimated 100,000 people remained out of a prewar population of 450,000. Many were trapped without food, water, heat or electricity. Relentless bombardment left rows upon rows of shattered or hollowed-out buildings.

Mariupol’s plight first came into focus with a Russian airstrike on a maternity hospital on March 9 last year, less than two weeks after Russian troops moved into Ukraine. A week later, about 300 people were reported killed in the bombing of a theater that was serving as the city’s largest bomb shelter. Evidence obtained by the AP last spring suggested that the real death toll could be closer to 600.

A small group of Ukrainian fighters held out for 83 days in the sprawling Azovstal steel works in eastern Mariupol before surrendering, their dogged defense tying down Russian forces and coming to symbolize Ukrainian tenacity in the face of Moscow’s aggression.

Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014, a move that most of the world denounced as illegal, and moved on last September to officially claim four regions in Ukraine’s south and east as Russian territory, following referendums that Kyiv and the West described as a sham.

  • Nithyananda’s Kailasa cons 30 US cities with Sister City scam: Report

Nithyananda’s Kailasa cons 30 US cities with Sister City scam: Report

    [ad_1]

New York: Self-proclaimed godman and fugitive Nithyananda’s “United States of Kailasa” has signed a “cultural partnership” with over 30 American cities, a media report has said, days after the city of Newark in the US state of New Jersey said it rescinded a “sister-city” agreement with the fictional country.

The sister-city agreement between Newark and the fake “United States of Kailasa” was inked on January 12 this year and the signing ceremony took place at City Hall in Newark.

Nityananda, whose mind-bending spiritual homilies wrapped in a sheen of pseudo-science has provided much mirth on social media, claims to have set up a country called the “United States of Kailasa” in 2019.

According to its website, there are over 30 American cities that have signed a cultural partnership with the fake nation of Kailasa — cities from Richmond, Virginia to Dayton, Ohio, to Buena Park, Florida literally all over the map.

A report in Fox News on Thursday said that “we are finding out the supreme fake pontiff” has a “long list of cities that he’s duped.

It said that it reached out to some of the cities in the US for a reaction on signing an agreement with the fake nation.

“And so far most of the cities have confirmed these proclamations are in fact true,” the report said.

Jacksonville, North Carolina told Fox News: “Our proclamations with Kailasa are not an endorsement. They are a response to a request and we do not verify the information that is requested.”

Fox News blamed the cities for not “googling” for information about the fake nation.

“If someone wants a proclamation, someone gets a proclamation. They’ll just say you’re an exotic Hindu Island and they’ll name a street after you,” the Fox News anchor said.

The report added that it’s not just mayors or city councils but “people running the federal government” who are falling for the fake nation too.

It added that according to the fake guru, two members of the Congress have given Kailasa “special congressional recognition.”

One of them is Congresswoman Norma Torres of California, who is on the House Appropriations Committee.

“So, the person who decides what we spend our tax dollars on just got duped by an alleged rapist guru with a fake country,” the Fox News anchor said.

Republican Troy Balderson from Ohio also presented “his divine holiness and pontiff of Hinduism congressional recognition.”

Earlier this month, Press Secretary in the Department of Communications, City of Newark, Susan Garofalo had told PTI in an email that as soon as “we learned about the circumstances surrounding Kailasa, the City of Newark immediately took action and rescinded the sister city agreement” on January 18.

“Based on deception, the ceremony was groundless and void Although this was a regrettable incident, the City of Newark remains committed to partnering with people from diverse cultures in order to enrich each other with connectivity, support, and mutual respect,” Garofalo said.

Newark Councilman at Large Luis Quintana sponsored the motion to rescind the agreement.

He said during official proceedings that going forward any city entering into a sister city agreement “must be in good standards of human rights.

“We cannot bring Sister Cities International into an issue where there is controversy. This is an oversight, cannot happen any longer,” he said, adding that Newark cannot put itself in a situation where there is a sister city that has no human rights.

He had said going forward, it must be ensured that while sister cities are encouraged, agreements cannot be entered into with “governments that don’t have human rights.”

The Fox News report quoted a Newark resident to say that the sister-city agreement with a fake nation was an embarrassing episode for the city. “I think that’s embarrassing that he didn’t do his background research before entertaining them.”

Last month, USK representatives attended two UN public meetings in Geneva – a general discussion on Equal and inclusive representation of women in decision-making systems’ organised by the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) on February 22, and the general discussion on the General Comment on economic, social cultural rights and sustainable development on February 24, hosted by the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (CESCR).

Responding to questions on the United States of Kailasa’s participation at the UN forums, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) had said registration for such public events is open to NGOs and the general public.

“Anyone can submit information to the treaty bodies, who will use their judgment to determine the credibility of the submissions received.”

“On the day of the CEDAW general discussion, USK members were prevented from distributing promotional material in front of and inside the conference room. Their written submission to CEDAW will not be published by the Committee as it is irrelevant to the topic of the general discussion,” OHCHR had said.

Nithyananda is wanted in India on several charges of rape and sexual assault allegations he denies.

The Kailasa website counts “two billion practising Hindus” among its population.
