  • Srinagar City To Go Garbage And Dumpster- Free: SMC

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: In a move towards making Srinagar city garbage and dumpster free, the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has added 150 new collection and transportation  vehicles, and starts its path-breaking GIS based and real time GPS monitored 100% door to door Segregated Waste Collection system and

The SMC has initiated removal of dumpsters to make city free of dumpsters and garbage.

Commissioner SMC, Athar Aamir Khan has issued a revised area and ward wise deployment schedule of Garbage Collection Vehicles across the city to ensure 100% collection of segregated dry and wet waste.

SMC has added more than 150 vehicles to its existing fleet including 100 new light motor vehicles for door to door primary collection and around 50 new heavy motor vehicles including modern compactors for secondary transportation.

All vehicles have been enabled with GPS devices for real time monitoring. The GIS mapping and geo-fencing of all areas and wards up to lane level has been done to ensure efficient and timely waste collection. The areas and households to be serviced by each vehicle have been mapped.

The Integrated Solid Waste Management IT System under Smart City project will enable comprehensive monitoring. It has been enabled with features including live location tracking, route & time deviation alerts, grievance redressal and quality assurance tools.

The garbage collection vehicles will reach each and every household and every commercial establishment including shops in Srinagar City. People will have to necessarily hand over the segregated waste to SMC garbage collection vehicles.

SMC is closing down all the garbage vulnerable points as well as the sites where dumpsters used to be located. It has been prohibited to deposit waste at such points now onwards. General public as well as commercial establishments shall handover the waste to SMC’s vehicles only and shall refrain from putting them at any other place.

The notification issued by Commissioner SMC, Athar Aamir Khan also informs the general public that in case Garbage Collection vehicle doesn’t come to their house or establishment or is not on time, the local ward level officers shall be contacted or SMC’s control room shall be informed. The contact details of concerned ward level officials and details of vehicles deployed in each area have been shared in the public notification.

The success of the initiative is heavily dependent on the participation and cooperation of the general public. Segregated waste collection will help SMC better manage the waste at the Achan site.

SMC is also working on the project for removal of legacy waste and biomining and bioremediation of existing waste at its Achan Landfill site. The legal waste removal plan has been prepared in consultation with IIT Jammu and NIT Srinagar and has been projected for funding under SBM 2.0 (GNS)

  • Melbourne overtakes Sydney as Australia’s biggest city

Melbourne overtakes Sydney as Australia’s biggest city

    [ad_1]

Melbourne: Melbourne has overtaken Sydney as the biggest city of Australia, a title the latter had held on to for more than 100 years.

With populations rapidly growing on Melbourne’s fringe, the city limits have been expanded to include the area of Melton, the BBC reported on Monday.

The latest government figures, from June 2021, put Melbourne’s population at 4,875,400 — 18,700 more than Sydney.

    MS Education Academy

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) defines a city’s “significant urban area”, by including all connecting suburbs with more than 10,000 people.

“Until the 2021 census definition, the Sydney significant area had a higher population than Melbourne. However, with the amalgamation of Melton into Melbourne in the latest… classification, Melbourne has more people than Sydney — and has had since 2018, ” the ABS’s Andrew Howe told the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper on Monday, which described the redrawn boundary as “a technicality”.

Proud Sydneysiders will point to the ABS’s conclusion that when looking at the greater Sydney and Melbourne regions, Sydney remained bigger in June 2021.

Greater regions of a city take into account its “functional area”, the ABS says, and include populations who regularly socialise, shop or work within the city, but may live in small towns and rural areas surrounding it.

However the federal government predicts Greater Melbourne will overtake Greater Sydney in 2031-32.

This is not the first time Melbourne has held the title of Australia’s biggest city.

As a result of the gold rush in the late 19th century, which saw migrants flock to the state of the Victoria, Melbourne grew rapidly and outnumbered Sydney until 1905.

Start-up Founder & Owner Rayees Dar All Praise for Contributors

    Asif Iqbal

Srinagar, Apr 16 (GNS): Tiffin Aaw – a Srinagar-based food delivery start-up, has been distributing free food to the patients and their attendants in several city hospitals amid ongoing holy month of Ramadan.

In a statement issued to GNS, the founder and owner of Tiffin Aaw, Rayees Ahmad Dar said that they have been distributing free meals since the first day of the holy month of Ramadan.

“We have been serving the patients and attendants for the last 25 days during Iftar (break-fast) and Sehri (pre-dawn meals). We distribute the food in various hospitals including at Children Hospital, JVC Bemina and L D Hospital,” Rayees said.

He said that this free meal initiative was all possible because of all those who contributed for it. “We only prepare and distribute it but the actual credit goes to those who contribute some money for these needy people and make this possible,” he said.

“We are thankful to them for choosing us because they believe in our food quality. They are not only contributing but also empowering the new start-ups,” he added.

Nida Rehman, the co-founder of ‘Tiffn Aaw’ and who is also Rayees’s wife, said that they have been mostly focusing on Children Hospital Bemina.

“We distribute at least 400 food packets to the patients and attendants per day in this hospital. The hospital is located on the bypass road and lacks a proper market where people could buy food for Iftari and Sehri, even as many are too poor to buy the food,” she said.

Muzaffar Ahmad, an attendant from south Kashmir’s Kulgam district who was at the Children Hospital said, “We appreciate the organizers for serving free food to patients. It completely feels homemade and is hygienic to eat.”

Notably, ‘Tiffin Aaw’ distributed free meals to the COVID-19 patients at city hospitals 2020 and 2021, which garnered them love and appreciation from different sections of society. (GNS)

  • When a Legislature Goes to War With Its State’s Richest City

When a Legislature Goes to War With Its State’s Richest City

    [ad_1]

    20230410 nashville politics 1499 edit

    ‘They’ve been stealing seats.’

Tennessee was not ever thus. This is, after all, a state in which then-Senator Al Gore, a Democrat, carried every county in his 1990 re-election bid. “When I started in 1994, Democrats were in control of the House, the Senate, as well as the executive branch” statewide, said Larry Miller, a Memphis-area Democratic representative who is one of the longest-serving legislators in the Tennessee House. His tenure has overlapped with those of five governors — two Democrats and three Republicans. He was in his third term when Gore lost his home state in 2000. When Barack Obama started running for president, sometime in Miller’s seventh term, Miller noticed the rightward shift really accelerate. “The Republicans,” he said, “began every two years to gain more and more seats in the state.”

In the decade or so since Republicans claimed a supermajority in both legislative chambers in 2012 — which effectively allows them to pass party-line laws without any votes from their handful of Democratic colleagues — the state has also grown, particularly the central zone that includes Nashville. Boosters have lately pitched the area to good effect as a kind of Silicon Valley of the South and, according to research from the Greater Nashville Technology Council, Middle Tennessee’s tech job growth exploded by more than 50 percent between 2015 and 2020, outpacing the national average. Amazon has set up shop there and Oracle has vowed to bring thousands more jobs to the area; other companies one wouldn’t think of as “tech” per se, such as Bridgestone and Nissan, have relocated their headquarters to Nashville and brought an army of tech jobs with them; and this being “Music City,” Apple, YouTube and Spotify all have a music tech presence here. The Wall Street Journal has dubbed Nashville 2022’s “hottest” job market, edging out Austin, Texas; another report found Tennessee leading the country in tech workers moving to the state since the pandemic. “Companies keep moving and opening new jobs. As soon as we fill them, we have more to fill,” said Elise Cambournac, the CEO of the Greater Nashville Technology Council.

This is one reason greater Nashville is the economic engine of the state, accounting for some 40 percent of the state’s GDP. (Another major one is tourism and, if there’s one bipartisan issue in the city, it’s annoyance with bachelorette parties.) And, though no one measures this directly, the city’s growing hordes of millennial tech workers may have contributed to its slight blue-ening over time — a Vanderbilt University poll shows an uptick of city residents calling themselves liberal or very liberal since it was first conducted in 2015, albeit from 26 percent to 30 percent. (They outnumber conservatives by six points, and self-described moderates handily prevail over both.) But metro-area residents do vote for Democrats: In the 2020 presidential election, Joe Biden notched nearly 65 percent in the county that includes Nashville, a five-point improvement over Hillary Clinton’s 2016 showing there. So the “Silicon Valley of the South” thing isn’t necessarily driving a huge cultural shift as much as showcasing a low-tax, quite affordable alternative to living in the actual Silicon Valley.

The historic indictment of the former president by the Manhattan district attorney brought hundreds of protesters last week to the Manhattan criminal courthouse.

Meanwhile Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg, a darling of progressive Democrats for his criminal justice reform policies, has drawn the ire of House Republicans, who say the top prosecutor should focus on violent offenders instead of Trump’s alleged involvement in a hush money scheme. They plan to hold a so-called “field hearing” in New York City next week on violent crime.

Adams criticized House Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) for his hearing’s singular focus on New York City when “crime in congressional Republican areas per capita is through the roof.” He faulted southern states for the “proliferation of guns” flowing to major cities.

The hearing is the latest move by House Republicans to pressure Bragg, who is pursuing 34 felony charges accusing Trump of falsifying business records to bury damaging allegations of an extramarital affair during the height of the 2016 presidential campaign. Trump has pleaded not guilty.

The House GOP recently subpoenaed a former Manhattan prosecutor who criticized aspects of Bragg’s investigation. Bragg sued to block it, calling the move a “campaign of harassment.”

The House Judiciary Committee’s scheduled hearing on violent crime pledges to “examine how Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s pro-crime, anti-victim policies have led to an increase in violent crime and a dangerous community for New York City residents.”

Adams said the committee hasn’t communicated with city officials to prepare for the hearing that will be held in a lower Manhattan federal building.

“This is just an extension of Donald Trump campaigning and it really makes no sense,” Adams said.

Hyderabad city police host ‘HACK Summit 2023’ for cybersecurity

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: City Police and Hyderabad City Security Council (HCSC) conducted the Hyderabad Annual Cybersecurity Knowledge (HACK) Summit 2023 which brought together renowned speakers and experts to discuss the pressing issue of cybersecurity at Hotel Taj Deccan on Wednesday.

Home Minister Mahmood Ali, Guest of Honour Dr BV Mohan Reddy, founder and executive of Cyient and special guest Sanjay Sahay, former IPS, founder and director of TechConPro Pvt Ltd, Pro Public, and Indian Badminton Champion Jwala Gutta exchanged their ideas at the summit.

Sharing the objectives and aspirations of the summit, the secretary general of HCSC, Chaitanya Gorrepati said, “HACK aims to empower businesses and citizens to tackle cybersecurity challenges by bringing together academics, security experts, businesspeople, and concerned citizens.”

    MS Education Academy

“By fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange, we hope to make Hyderabad the Cybersecurity capital of India,” Chaitanya added.

Mahmood Ali emphasized the importance of cybersecurity in today’s digital world.

“Under the visionary leadership of CM K Chandra Shekar Rao and minister KT Rama Rao, Hyderabad has become a global leader. Cybersecurity is essential, and our proactive police force works closely with industry and business to combat cybercrime,” said Mahmood Ali.

The Home Minister further highlighted the government’s focus on inclusivity, social security, and cybersecurity awareness by saying, “We hope this summit bolsters our digital infrastructure’s security. Women and Stree programs initiated by the police have positively impacted many lives, and our citizen-centric policing enhances visibility and effectiveness.”

Continuing the conversation, HCSC chairman and Hyderabad City Police Commissioner CV Anand, IPS, underscored the importance of collaboration and knowledge sharing among stakeholders.

“We aim to make HACK an annual event, bringing city police and businesses together on a single platform to address critical cybersecurity issues. This collaboration is essential for breaking down silos and finding solutions, as demonstrated during the COVID-19 pandemic,” he remarked.

CV Anand also provided an overview of the various forums focusing on women, cyber, traffic, anti-narcotics, physical security, and CSR mobilization, mentioning initiatives like WeCop, Farishtey, and Stree counselling centres.

Shared insights into the rapidly evolving cybercrime landscape and stressed the need for continuous awareness efforts and adaptations by law enforcement agencies, the police commissioner said that the HCSC will very soon organise similar summits on women’s safety, anti-narcotics, and traffic.

Special Guest Sanjay Sahay urged stakeholders, including students, police, industry, and citizens, to navigate the digital crossroads confidently and develop a cybersecurity attitude.

He pointed out the challenges faced by police unfamiliarity with digital forensics and the growing prevalence of cybercrime in various industries.

Sahay ended with a thought-provoking statement, “With 97% of Fortune 500 companies hacked and the remaining unaware, data is the new oil, AI is the new electricity, and hacking is the new normal.”

Guest of Honour Padma Dr BV Mohan Reddy provided insights into India’s digital transformation, stressing the need for increased awareness, smarter tactics, and collaboration among stakeholders to create a secure digital environment.

“India is the world’s fastest transforming digital society, with 74 billion transactions last year and the lowest data consumption expense, reduced by 36x. Real-time data and quantum computing power democratize technology, increasing accessibility even in rural areas,” Dr Reddy said.

However, he also warned that this connected world comes with risks as accessing information becomes easier.

“Technology does not differentiate between good and bad users, exposing individuals, businesses, and law enforcement agencies to threats. Individuals face identity theft and financial loss, while businesses allocate budgets for cyber risk assessment and monitoring,” said the doctor.

To address these challenges, Dr Reddy suggested a three-pronged approach:

    • Increase awareness levels and become cyber warriors, as there is no escape from technology.
    • Outsmart hackers by continuously adapting and learning.
    • Foster collaboration and cooperation among stakeholders to create a secure digital environment.

During the summit, the Cyber Squad was launched, and Cyber Squad jackets were presented to several students from various schools, including Delhi Public School, Nasr School, Glendale International School, Hyderabad Public School, and Kalpa School.

These students will be ambassadors of cybersecurity awareness in their respective schools and will help educate their peers on the importance of staying safe in the digital world.

The opening session was followed by an interesting interaction with Jwala Gutta on how to tackle cyberbullying.

Overall, the HACK Summit 2023 was a resounding success, fostering dialogue and collaboration among key stakeholders in the field of cybersecurity.

With its emphasis on raising awareness, promoting education, and sharing best practices, the event has laid the groundwork for Hyderabad to become the cybersecurity capital of India.

In a symbolic conclusion to the HACK Summit 2023, dignitaries unveiled the HACK 2023 logo, released the Data Security Council of India (DSCI) white paper, and showcased Cyber Security videos for citizen awareness.

SC declines another plea against renaming Aurangabad city

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday refused to entertain a petition challenging the Maharashtra government’s decision to rename Aurangabad city as ‘Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar’.

A bench of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justice JB Pardiwala declined to entertain the plea saying a similar matter is pending before the Bombay High Court.

“The Bombay High Court is currently seized of the proceedings which now stands to April 24. We are not inclined to entertain this special leave petition,” the bench said.

    MS Education Academy

“Whether we like it or not, this lies in the democratic arms of the government,” said CJI Chandrachud.

“Who are we to change the name of a road or a place? It is for the elected executive to decide,” he added.

On March 24, the apex court declined to entertain a similar plea as the High Court is seized of the matter.

In a letter dated March 4, 2020, the Aurangabad divisional commissioner proposed that the city’s name be changed to Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar.

Last month, the central government approved the renaming of Maharashtra’s Aurangabad and Osmanabad districts as Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar and Dharashiv, respectively.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis welcomed the decision and said that the state government under the leadership of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has “demonstrated” its resolve.

“‘Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar’ of Aurangabad, ‘Dharashiv’ of Osmanabad! The central government approves the decision of the state government! Hon. Prime Minister Narendra Modiji and Union Minister Hon. Many thanks to Amitbhai Shah! The government under the leadership of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde ji has ‘demonstrated’…!” he said in a tweet.
