The incident has sparked growing concern throughout the week, most prominently from left-leaning New York officials.
“NYC is not Gotham. We must not become a city where a mentally ill human being can be choked to death by a vigilante without consequences. Or where the killer is justified & cheered,” City Comptroller Brad Lander tweeted Tuesday.
A day later, U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez weighed in.
“Jordan Neely was murdered. But bc Jordan was houseless and crying for food in a time when the city is raising rents and stripping services to militarize itself while many in power demonize the poor, the murderer gets protected w/ passive headlines + no charges,” she tweeted. “It’s disgusting.”
The former Marine has not been charged in the case. But on Wednesday night, Mayor Eric Adams chided his fellow elected officials for getting ahead of the district attorney, who is looking into the incident.
“I don’t think that’s very responsible at a time when we are still investigating the situation. Let’s let the DA conduct his investigation with law enforcement officials,” Adams said during an appearance on CNN. “To interfere with that is not the right thing to do.”
Adams, who was once a transit cop during his career with the NYPD, urged observers to reserve judgment until more facts in the case are known.
“We cannot just blatantly say what a passenger should or should not do in a situation like that,” he said.
In a statement Wednesday, Bragg’s office detailed some of the steps it would be taking as it looks into the case — and alluded that updates may not arrive as quickly as some observers would like.
“This is a solemn and serious matter that ended in the tragic loss of Jordan Neely’s life,” DA spokesperson Doug Cohen said in a statement. “As part of our rigorous ongoing investigation, we will review the Medical Examiner’s report, assess all available video and photo footage, identify and interview as many witnesses as possible, and obtain additional medical records. This investigation is being handled by senior, experienced prosecutors and we will provide an update when there is additional public information to share.”
While Adams occupies far more moderate political territory than Bragg, who was elected as a progressive, he has been a staunch ally of the prosecutor, declining to pile on during the disastrous rollout of a policy memo early in Bragg’s tenure, for example.
His deference to the process now gives Bragg some political cover, even as pressure builds to bring charges from a broader slice of the political spectrum.
Council Speaker Adrienne Adams, whose political philosophy aligns more closely with the mayor’s, released a lengthy statement Wednesday night lamenting Neely’s killing and calling for a thorough investigation.
“Racism that continues to permeate throughout our society allows for a level of dehumanization that denies Black people from being recognized as victims when subjected to acts of violence,” she said, later adding that “The initial response by our legal system to this killing is disturbing and puts on display for the world the double standards that Black people and other people of color continue to face.”

Srinagar, Apr 28 (GNS): The Jammu & Kashmir National Conference General Secretary Ali Muhammad Sagar on Friday said that far from acquiring a definite shape for want of proper vision and strategies, the ongoing Smart City works have only added to the miseries of traders and commuters.
Expressing concern over the sluggish pace of ‘smart city works’ across Lal Chowk and adjoining city areas, Sagar said, “The timing of the massive digging of main roads across the city is being questioned by the local traders. There has been no headway on the city center projects. Given the snails pace of work it’s evident that the authorities will fail to meet the given deadline. In the scenario, traders will have nothing to feed their families and the situation will turn dire. Earlier also the business hub of the city witnessed decreased footfall and slump in business activities during Ramzan & Eid. Tourist flow in the city center has already witnessed marked decline and those who make it to the city center find it very difficult to walk through the debris and mud. Rains that lashed the valley have brought the ongoing works to halt. It seems that construction work in Srinagar city will go beyond June and July and till then business community has to suffer.”
Lamenting the massive urban mess, the city of Srinagar finds itself in, Sagar said, “There is nothing smart about the smart city project. Projects which did not see the light of the day are smart parking, cleaning of water bodies, solid waste management, affordable housing, curbing canine menace and improving basic public utility services. We only get to see the shrinking of roads in the name of the coveted project,” he said.
“Entire city has been defaced. Roads are being choked, regular traffic jams, partial road closures have crippled the city. Commuters, office goers, traders and students continue to remain at the receiving end. Ideally the works should have been carried out in a phased manner and by taking all the stakeholders on board,” he added.
Developmental dividends of the “Smart City project” Sagar rued remain untraceable on the ground across Srinagar. “Electricity, water connectivity, and other public utility services continue to remain a distant dream for Srinagar residents. Formidable challenges in the shape of deficient health, and education-related infrastructure remain out of the ambit of Smart City project. It is becoming increasingly difficult for our people in Srinagar to feed their families due to the curtailment of ration quota at local FCCI stores. The little ration consumers get is of sub-standard quality which is driving them towards fatal diseases.” (GNS)
For more than 80 days, Mariupol endured a brutal and unrelenting bombardment, as Russian forces determined to take the port city reduced much of it to rubble.
In March 2022, a few days after the war began, Russian forces cut off electricity, water and gas supplies, forcing residents to melt snow for water and cook outside over open flames. Mariupol was encircled and the relentless bombing of the city began.
After a maternity ward was shelled and images of bloodied, heavily pregnant women were broadcast across the world, the siege of Mariupol became emblematic of the brutality of the Russian invasion.
Updated satellite imagery from Google Maps has revealed the scale of the destruction across large sections of the Ukrainian city – and the Russian efforts to erase any evidence of the atrocities that took place there.

Weeks into the siege, as homes became uninhabitable and routes out of the city were closed off, many residents moved into public shelters. More than a thousand took refuge in the central drama theatre, which had once been a focal point of city life.
As more residents gathered in the basement, someone spelled out the word DETI – children – in giant Russian letters in front of the building.
Around 10am on 16 March, Russia bombed the building. It’s thought that about 1,200 people were inside. At the time, authorities said 300 people had been killed, but the Associated Press said their investigations put the number closer to 600.
Amnesty International condemned the bombing as “a clear war crime”. By December, Russia had begun to demolish the building’s remains. Petro Andryushchenko, an adviser to the city’s exiled mayor, has said Russia destroyed what remained of the theatre to “hide war crimes”.

In mid-April, all remaining Ukrainian troops defending the city were ordered to regroup at Azovstal, the city’s huge steel plant. The factory’s employees and their families also took refuge there, where they became the target of heavy bombardment for a number of weeks.
After some time, food and water began to grow scarce and the plight of those sheltering at Azovstal became the centre of international attention. On 1 May, the UN and Red Cross facilitated an agreement that secured the release of the civilians; and then two weeks later the remaining troops were ordered to surrender.
A total of 2,439 fighters gave themselves up to the Russian forces outside the plant and with that, the city of Mariupol had finally fallen.

Mariupol’s suburbs were not spared, with the latest images showing the extent of the damage to residential areas.
46% of the city’s building were damaged or destroyed in the siege, according to one estimate. In a city that was once home to more than 400,000, the UN estimates that up to 90% of its multi-storey residential building have been damaged or destroyed.

Andryushchenko estimates that the updated Google satellite images were captured on different dates after March 2022. Writing on Telegram, he has claimed that the pictures reveal a new mass burial site at the city’s Novotroitsky cemetery.
Associated Press has reported that at least 10,000 new graves are scattered across the city and the death toll is estimated to be at least 25,000.

In March, Vladimir Putin travelled to Mariupol for the first time since the war began. Russian media reported that he visited several sites, spoke to residents and was presented with a report on the city’s reconstruction.
Russian authorities have said they hope to entice some of the hundreds of thousands who fled to return. They claim that hundreds of apartments have already been rebuilt, but reports from former residents who have returned show that many of the new buildings were built hurriedly and are of poor quality.

Mikel Arteta wants Arsenal to savour the “beautiful experience” of a potential title decider against Manchester City at the Etihad but accepts his players will have to delve into previously untapped resources to regain control of a neck-and-neck race for the top.
Arsenal travel to Manchester with a five-point lead at the summit but, given their opponents have two games in hand, anything bar a win would make City favourites to pull clear by the end of the season. Three straight draws have squandered much of Arsenal’s advantage but Arteta praised his side for staying with Pep Guardiola’s team and urged them to hit the heights required for a successful conclusion.
“A beautiful experience tomorrow night, that is what I want them to take,” he said, when asked what Arsenal’s squad might glean from such a high-pressure occasion. “A beautiful experience where we do what we have to do to win the game. For us to have been able to go toe-to-toe with [City] is great. But it’s not enough because we want to win it, so we have to find a different edge [so] now that we are here we are going to win it. And to do that, excellence is the only thing that is going to take you where we want to go.”
Arteta worked as Guardiola’s assistant at City for three and a half years before taking the Arsenal job in December 2019. The usually pragmatic manager allowed himself a brief reflection on the pace at which his life has changed since then. “It is the beauty of football,” he said. “Five years ago if somebody told me we would be in this position, him at City and me at Arsenal, and going toe-to-toe with them … ”
City were 3-1 victors at the Emirates two months ago, winning 11 and drawing three of their 14 matches in all competitions since. They are in searing form but Arteta was bullish when it was put to him that his team might have had a greater chance of winning at the Etihad earlier in the campaign. “They’ve been in incredible form but look where we are in the table,” he said. “That means we’ve been in incredible form as well. That’s why we are where we are.

“It’s going to be a tough night and challenge but the opportunity is incredible for us. We knew from the beginning, if you want to win a Premier League, you have to go to Spurs and beat them. You have to go to Chelsea and you have to beat them. You have to go away from home and win. This is what we’ve been doing. This is why we’re here. Now you have to go to City and you have to beat them.”

Any hopes that William Saliba might make a miraculous recovery to reassume his place in Arsenal’s defence appear to have been dashed, Arteta suggesting the centre-back would be absent into next week because of a back injury that could curtail his season. They have struggled to keep things tight without Saliba and a lack of security was doubly pronounced when Granit Xhaka missed Friday’s 3-3 draw against Southampton through illness. Xhaka is doubtful again and Arteta will be desperate for his most experienced player to recover in time.
“Injuries for us in the wrong moments, losing three or four players, is not great, but we have to adapt,” he said. “If you want to win the championship you have to go through those moments and somehow overcome that situation. We have to show that now.”
