Andhra CID arrests TDP leaders in chit fund company case

Amaravati: The Andhra Pradesh Police’s CID on Sunday arrested former Telugu Desam Party (TDP) MLC Adireddy Appa Rao and his son and TDP state Executive Secretary Adireddy Srinivasa Rao in a case relating to financial irregularities in a chit fund company.

The CID sleuths arrested the father-son duo from their residence in Rajamahendravaram and shifted them to the CID office. Appa Rao, who is the husband of TDP Rajahmundry MLA Adireddy Bhavani and their son Srinivasa Rao are said to be directors in Jagajjanani Chit Funds Private Ltd.

The main opposition party condemned the arrests. Several party leaders and workers reached the party office in Rajamahendravaram and voiced their protest over the arrests.

Meanwhile, TDP national President and former Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu spoke to Bhavani over phone and expressed solidarity with her.

Naidu said that the political harassment and vendetta by the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) government is increasing by the day. He lamented that there is no change in the ruling party’s behavior.

The TDP President said the YSRCP government believed only in illegal cases and illegal arrests. He said the arrest of Appa Rao and Srinivasa Rao is another example of the YSRCP government’s politics of vendetta.

Naidu alleged that Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy does not want anybody to do business in the state. “Is CID a government investigation agency or YSRCP threatening agency,” he asked

The TDP chief said despite courts reprimanding the government on many occasions, the Jagan government has not mend its ways.

TDP’s Andhra Pradesh unit chief Atchanaidu said the party was not afraid of illegal cases and arrests. He alleged that there is no difference between YSRCP ‘goondas’ and CID officials. The former minister said while on one hand, YSRCP leaders were resorting to physical attacks on TDP workers, the CID, on the other, is raiding the houses of TDP leaders in the name of searches.

During the searches, the book of accounts and documents including electronic documents pertaining to the case were scrutinized, the release stated.

Further investigation is underway, it stated.

Earlier on March 28, the Andhra Pradesh’s CID served notices to Cherukuri Ramoji Rao, the Chairman of Margadarsi Chit Fund Private Limited and his daughter-in-law and Managing Director Sailaja Cherukuri in connection with the Chit fund scam.

As per the notice, the said persons have been asked to be present at their residence/office on March 29 or March 31 or April 3 or April 6 and cooperate with the investigation.

Last November, Andhra Pradesh’s Registration and Stamps Department said that there have been malpractices in the functioning of chit fund companies in the state and show cause notice would be issued to those who have violated the rules.

V Ramakrishna, Inspector General (Registration and Stamps Department) had said forensic auditing will be carried out in Margadarshi chit fund companies at a press conference.

The official had said that the Stamps and Registrations Regulatory Authority will be the nodal agency for chit-fund institutions and carry out regular inspections.

He had said the department conducted inspections at 12 chit fund companies on October 21, five organisations were inspected on October 31 and 18 units were inspected on November 15. He had said a total of 35 units have been inspected.

Ramakrishna had said that irregularities included using money borrowed through chit fund for “other purposes”

“Showcause notices will be issued to companies that have violated the rules, including the guidelines of the company. We will take further action after getting the reply to the show cause notices,” he had said.

  • CID Denies Pressuring Litigants To Withdraw Passport Cases

CID Denies Pressuring Litigants To Withdraw Passport Cases

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Police has responded to recent media reports suggesting that its intelligence and counterintelligence wing is pressuring litigants to withdraw from the process of redressing their grievances through courts of law.

In a statement to Srinagar based news agency KDC, a spokesman for the Criminal Investigation Department said that the claims made were false, and an internal audit had been carried out to investigate the accusations. The police confirmed that officers would approach the aggrieved person to ascertain further details about who pressurized them and under what circumstances, so that a thorough inquiry could be conducted and suitable disciplinary action taken against the delinquent.

The J&K Police pointed out that the accusations were problematic because they denigrated public institutions designed to serve the public’s interest. The department emphasized that such false accusations harmed the community and appealed for people not to project personal grievances as public ones.

According to police statistics, in 2020, out of 77,686 passport verifications received, 77,644 (99.95%) cleared. In 2021, out of 75,714 passport verifications received, 75,176 (99.68%) cleared, and in 2022, out of 134,315 passport verifications received, 128,939 (99.61%) cleared.

The spokesman also highlighted the importance of security verifications preceding the issuance of passports, calling it a high-value public service. The police had detected 54 young boys who were wrongly given passport services during 2017-2018. All of them were taken to terrorist camps in Pakistan, trained in arms, ammunition, and explosives, and many were pushed back into Jammu and Kashmir through the Line of Control. Tragically, 26 of them died either while crossing or during encounters in the hinterland.

The CID was able to bring 12 of these young boys back under preventive custody to prevent terrorist-separatist syndicates from pressuring them to join terror ranks. The boys have now been reunited with their families and are happily living with them. Unfortunately, 16 of them are still trapped in camps under the control of hostile agencies.

Police investigations confirmed that in each case, the visa to Pakistan was arranged at the behest of one or the other leader of a constituent party of Hurriyat. The J&K Police is committed to helping the parents of vulnerable young person’s not fall prey to the death traps.

J&K Police reassured the public that they are committed to speedy and hassle-free clearance for those who are “clean and green.” They also stressed the importance of professional filtering of those who should be prevented from availing the service, both in their own interest and in the interest of the public.

Situation in Howrah’s Kazipara peaceful; CID starts probe into clashes

    [ad_1]

Howrah: The situation in Howrah town, which witnessed clashes between two groups during a Ram Navami procession, is peaceful and under control on Saturday, even as prohibitory order was still in force in the affected area, a police officer said.

Shops and markets opened as traffic movement started from the morning amid heavy deployment of police in Kazipara area.
Taking over investigations into the clashes, CID sleuths collected samples and spoke to local people as well as police personnel who were deployed there during Thursday’s clash, the officer said.

Prohibitory order under Section 144 of CrPC was still in force in Kazipara and Shibpur Police Station limits while Internet connections remained suspended.

“Situation is under control and peaceful. Life is leaping back to normalcy. We are, however, continuing with the police deployment there to keep a check on the situation,” the officer told PTI.

A CID officer said officers of the agency have started investigations into the case.

“At the moment, we cannot reveal much about the probe as it is in a preliminary stage,” the CID officer said.

Meanwhile, police continued with raids throughout the intervening Friday-Saturday night and nabbed a few more people for their alleged involvement in the vandalism.

Nearly 50 people were arrested in connection with the clashes.

“We will be verifying their involvement with video footage we have from the spot on that day. If found guilty they will be treated as per the law,” he added.

On Thursday evening, clashes broke out between two groups when a Ram Navami procession was passing through Kazipara in Howrah town.

Several shops were ransacked during the violence while a number of cars including a few belonging to the police were set on fire.
In renewed unrest, police personnel deployed in the area were pelted with stones on Friday afternoon following which prohibitory orders were imposed in the area and internet services were suspended.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday alleged that the BJP and other right-wing organisations were behind the violence.

The saffron party denied the allegations and demanded an NIA probe into the matter.

Governor C V Ananda Bose and the chief minister discussed the issue.

A press statement from Raj Bhavan said Governor Bose asked the state government to “ensure foolproof arrangements to maintain law and order effectively” besides action to be taken “against miscreants.”

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday spoke to Bose on the violence in Howrah and took stock of the situation.
Shah also spoke to BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar in this connection.

Naming the chit fund’s chairman and media baron Cherukuri Ramoji Rao, company director Sailaja Cherukuri and the firm’s branch managers from various locations as accused, the CID termed the irregularities grave in nature.

Multiple CID teams swooped on Margadarsi branches in Visakhapatnam, Rajamundry, Eluru, Vijayawada, Guntur, Narasaraopeta and Anantapur, where searches are continuing.

“In view of the findings which are grave in nature, including the diverting of the subscribers money to mutual funds/speculative markets for their personal gains… the CID had immediately registered the cases and in pursuance of the FIRs, they commenced the investigation of the case,” an official said.

Non-payment of monthly subscriptions, illegal diversion of funds to the corporate office, non-disclosure of revenue and expenditure account and several other irregularities were named by the CID.

FIRs were registered on Friday under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, Section 5 of Andhra Pradesh Protection of Depositors in Financial Establishments Act and Sections 76 and 79 of the Chit Funds Act.

As the regulating power of chit fund businesses, the Stamps and Registration Department started its search of Margadarsi branches in October and November, 2022 along with other such firms.

The CID had also raided the chit fund company’s corporate office in Hyderabad for three days last December, where it unearthed collections from branch offices being funnelled into the corporate office for onward investment into mutual funds which are contingent to risks in the capital markets.

Rao is an influential media baron with interests in multiple businesses, including owning the famous Ramoji Film City in the outskirts of Hyderabad metropolis.

Andhra CID produces skill development scam accused in court

    [ad_1]

Amaravati: The Crime Investigation Department of Andhra Pradesh Police on Thursday produced GVS Bhaskar, an accused in the AP State Skill Development Corporation scam, in a Vijayawada court on Thursday, an official said.

Bhaskar, a former employee of Siemens Industrial Software, was arrested from Noida and brought to the state under a 36-hour transit remand.

“He (Bhaskar) prepared a fake DPR (detailed project report) with overvaluation, keeping a margin of more than Rs 200 crore out of Rs 371 crore (released by the state government),” the official said.

The skill development programme was envisaged under the then Telugu Desam Party government between 2014 and 2019.

According to officials, Bhaskar inflated the valuation of the project, which involved Siemens Industrial Software India and Design Tech Systems, to Rs 3,300 crore. However, the cost of Siemens Industrial Software India’s software was only Rs 58 crore.

Suman Bose, the then MD of Siemens Industrial Software India, and Design Tech System MD Vikas Kanwilkar allegedly met the then chief minister Chandrababu Naidu for the project in 2014-15.

As part of the agreement, Siemens Industrial Software India and Design Tech Systems were to contribute 90 per cent of the funds for the programme with the balance 10 per cent coming from the state government.

However, neither company spent a single penny while the state government’s share of 10 per cent — amounting to Rs 371 crore — was allegedly misappropriated, the CID stated.

It is alleged that former special secretary to the state government Ganta Subba Rao and former IAS officer K Lakshminarayana had played key roles in the programme. The Crime Investigation Department (CID) identified Lakshminarayana as a close friend of Naidu.

CID officials claimed that the misappropriated money was funnelled into shell companies such as Allied Computers (Rs 60 crore), Skillers India, Knowledge Podium, Cadence Partners and ETA Greens.

According to reports, former finance secretary Sunita had objected to the release of funds but senior government officials overruled her.

When the CID contacted the German headquarters of Siemens, it clarified that Bose had acted on his own volition, which resulted in his services being terminated, the official said.

The Enforcement Directorate has also launched a probe into the alleged scam and has issued notices to 26 people.

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officials conducted a raid at the residence of former Andhra Pradesh minister P Narayana’s daughter in Hyderabad on Friday in connection with an ongoing case.

These raids might be connected to the case related to an FIR filed against the former minister for an alleged paper leak case at the Narayana School in the Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh.

Earlier, Andhra Pradesh Police registered a case under various sections including 10 AP Public examinations (Prevention of Malpractices), and section 408 (Criminal breach of trust by clerk or servant) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

P Narayana is the founder and director of the Narayana Institutions.

In April last year, the question paper for Telugu was allegedly leaked in the school, and when the police found that the teacher clicked a photo of the question paper and shared it over social media, an hour later the exam started.
