Anjum Chopra consoles Harmanpreet as India crashes out of Women’s T20 WC

Cape Town: Just after India’s campaign in 2023 ICC Womens T20 World Cup ended with a narrow five-run loss to Australia at Newlands Cricket Ground, former India skipper Anjum Chopra was seen consoling captain Harmanpreet Kaur, in an emotional video shared by the International Cricket Council (ICC).

Asked about consoling a distraught Harmanpreet, Anjum said, “My Intention was to give the captain some empathy because that’s all I can offer from the outside. It was an emotional moment for both of us. India has reached the semi-finals a lot of times and have lost a lot of times.

This is not the first time I have seen her play like this. I have also seen her battling injuries and her health. Today (on Thursday), she might not have even played, but because it was the semi-final of a World Cup and it’s Harmanpreet Kaur, she is a player who doesn’t back down but charges ahead, she did just that.”

Before the match began, there were reports of Harmanpreet missing the semi-final due to high fever for the last two days. But she took the field and top-scored with a delightful 52, while sharing a brilliant 69-run partnership with Jemimah Rodrigues to spearhead India’s chase of 173.

But the duo fell in 4.2 overs post ten-over mark, with Harmanpreet being run-out after her bat got stuck in the crease while taking a second run, as Australia made a comeback to keep India to 167/8.

After the match ended, Harmanpreet cried as Anjum gave her a long embrace in the video. Her teammate Harleen Deol, who was not a part of the playing eleven, tried her best to wipe the tears off Harmanpreet’s face.

“Today (on Thursday), before the match started, she was able to bring herself to play this match. And continued with it while fielding by running all over the ground. The captain said I’ll go everywhere. And then with the bat she rekindled India’s hopes. Of course, Jemimah Rodrigues was also a part of it.

The way India lost, five runs, sometimes it’s a lot, sometimes it’s less. But the way this match went I can understand what she must be going through. It was a player-to-player moment with her. We were just trying to lessen our sorrows by sharing them,” elaborated Anjum.

  • Aditya Chopra opens up on why brother Uday couldn’t become a star

Aditya Chopra opens up on why brother Uday couldn’t become a star

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Director-producer Aditya Chopra, who is known to be a very private person and seldom comes out in the media, has shared his opinion on his brother Uday Chopra not becoming a star.

He said that privilege can only open first doors for actors in the film industry. After that, the audience decides whom they want to watch, admire and appreciate.

In the recently released Netflix docu-series ‘The Romantics’, the YRF honcho, said: “One of the things that people tend to ignore, is that every person who comes from a privileged background is not successful. I can articulate it without mentioning other people. I can just articulate it by mentioning my own family.”

He further mentioned: “My brother is an actor, and he’s not a very successful actor. Here is the son of one of the biggest filmmakers. He’s the brother of a very big filmmaker. Imagine a company like YRF who has launched so many newcomers, we could not make him a star.”

In conclusion, he said that only the audience has the power in showbiz to make someone a star.

“Why could we not do it for our own? The bottom line is, only an audience will decide ‘I like this person, I want to see this person’. No one else.”

‘The Romantics’ is streaming on Netflix.

  • Former India captain Anjum Chopra showers praise on the U19 Women’s team

Former India captain Anjum Chopra showers praise on the U19 Women’s team

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Former India captain Anjum Chopra showered praise on the U19 Women’s team who won the inaugural U19 Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa, saying the country’s name being written in golden letters for winning the first-ever edition of the competition is a big deal.

“Firstly, winning the World Cup is a big deal and then the Under-19 women’s winning the inaugural World Cup by which the name of India will be written on it in golden letters is a big deal. By the way, the women’s cricket team has played the semi-finals of the World Cup many times and also played the finals many times but never won the trophy.”

“So, I understand it is a very different feeling and now it looks like we wish we were little kids and once again get a chance to play that’s how I feel. I am so excited that there is no limit to happiness, and it looks like I’ve won the World Cup and great! It’s a golden opportunity for all the cricketers for the bright future ahead of them,” said Anjum to former India men’s player Aakash Chopra on JioCinema’s new daily show ‘Aakashvani’.

At the JB Marks Oval in Potchefstroom on Sunday, Shafali Verma & Co produced a superb bowling performance coupled with some outstanding fielding to bowl out England for just 68.

Fast bowler Titas Sadhu, off-spinner Archana Devi and leg-spinner Parshavi Chopra were accurate in their line, length and found enough help to pick two wickets each. Shafali, left-arm spinners Mannat Kashyap and Sonam Yadav took a scalp each in a dominating bowling performance.

The fielding, despite a few blips, was athletic with some exceptional catches taken by Archana and Gongadi Trisha as England never got going with the bat. In chasing 69, on a slow pitch aiding the spinners, India lost Shafali and Shweta Sehrawat in the first four overs.

But Soumya Tiwari (24 not out) and Gongadi Trisha (24) shared a vital 46-run stand for the third wicket to complete the chase in 14 overs and give India their first-ever World Cup title in women’s cricket.

Anjum further pointed out that opener Shweta Sehrawat, who was the tournament’s top-run getter with 297 runs, along with leg-spinner Parshavi Chopra, who picked 11 wickets, the second-most by a bowler in the competition and off-spinner Archana Devi will be the future superstars from the victorious Indian U19 team.

“Shweta Sehrawat is my highest and the top-ranked player in this Indian team. She is the one who has stood out and given stand-out performances in this World Cup. She nearly missed the Player of the series. In fact, she is the highest run-getter in this entire world cup and she has won three matches and also won the player of the match. So, by adding all these things, I think Shweta Sehrawat for me will be the number one pick.”

“Then Parshavi Chopra is a leg spinner, again very well done by her by giving the limited performances and the way she bowled. So, she will be my second pick and Archana Devi, a young budding off-spinner who also bats well. So, according to me these three players Archana Devi, Parshavi Chopra and right on top Shweta Sehrawat have been outstanding performers in this tournament.”
