Audio leak of Pak Chief Justice’s mother-in-law shows resentment against govt

    [ad_1]

Islamabad: An audio call, purportedly between Pakistan Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial’s mother-in-law, Mahjabeen Noon, and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lawyer Khawaja Tariq Rahim’s wife, Rafia Tariq, surfaced on Sunday where the two were heard discussing their support for the top judge and the wish for snap elections, media reports said.

The women, during the alleged call, also expressed their resentment towards the incumbent government in Islamabad, The News reported.

Special Assistant to Prime Minister Ata Tarar shared the audio clip on his Twitter account, saying that he is sure about the deep conspiracy after hearing the audio clip.

“The Constitution and law have been trampled for the sake of families. The families of Chief Sahib and two colleagues are trying to bring Imran Niazi to power by holding early elections along with attending (political) rallies,” Tarar tweeted, as per the The News.

In the purported leaked call, Noon and the PTI counsel’s wife, speak about their concern for the Chief Justice amid the ongoing election case delay case which is being heard by a three-member bench at the Supreme Court of Pakistan.

CJP Bandial’s mother-in-law is heard extending her support towards her son-in-law, assuring him to strengthen him in the midst of the rift between the government and the apex court.

They also vaguely discuss about being in a Lahore rally where there were hundreds of thousands of people.

The bench — headed by CJP Bandial and comprising Justice Ijaz Ul Ahsan and Justice Munib Akhtar as members — in its April 4 order, directed the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to hold the polls in Punjab on May 14.

  • Nadda’s confidant Bindal becomes Himachal BJP chief again

Nadda’s confidant Bindal becomes Himachal BJP chief again

    [ad_1]

Shimla: Himachal Pradesh’s former Assembly Speaker Rajeev Bindal, considered a confidant of BJP President J.P. Nadda, was on Sunday again made the party chief in the hill state days after incumbent Suresh Kashyap quit ahead of his stint getting over.

Four-time legislator Bindal held the state party chief’s post in 2020 but resigned on moral grounds after a Health Department scam.

While the opposition Congress had demanded a CBI probe, Bindal denied the involvement of any BJP leader in the scam.

    MS Education Academy

Holding the health portfolio in the state government from 2007-12, Bindal was told to resign as cabinet minister in July 2012 after a segment of his own party demanded his resignation to project a clean image of the government ahead of Assembly elections that year.

Bindal, a former legislator from Nahan and Solan assembly seats, is considered experienced and possessing shrewd organisational skills.

  • Need to nurture Vedas, Sanskrit to become ‘vishwa guru’, says RSS chief

Need to nurture Vedas, Sanskrit to become ‘vishwa guru’, says RSS chief

    [ad_1]

Sabarkantha: India needs to nurture the knowledge of the Vedas and the ancient language of Sanskrit to become a ‘vishwa guru’, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat said here on Sunday.
He said Indian culture was not orthodox but changed with time and was not one that told us “what to eat and what not to eat”.

India was created on the values of the Vedas, which have been followed by generation after generation, Bhagwat said at the ‘Ved Sanskrit Gyan Gaurav Samarambh’ event organised by Shree Bhagwan Yagyavalkya Vedtatvagyan Yogashram Trust in Mudeti village here.

“Therefore, today’s India has to grow but not to become a superpower like America, China and Russia that wield power. We have to become a country which can offer answers to the problems plaguing the world today. We have to become a country which can show the world the path of peace, love and prosperity through right conduct,” Bhagwat said.

    MS Education Academy

India is a country that believes in propagating ‘dharma’, uniting everyone and becoming a vishwa guru, he said, adding “victory means dharma vijay”.

“That is why it is necessary to nurture the knowledge of the Vedas or Ved vigyan and culture (sanskriti). All this knowledge is in Sanskrit. Therefore, it is necessary to have the influence of Sanskrit. If we know to speak our mother tongues well, then we can learn 40 per cent of Sanskrit,” he claimed.

Bhagwat also said experts believe many concepts of science as well as mathematics are easy to learn if one has the knowledge of Sanskrit and music.

Hailing India’s stand in the war between Ukraine and Russia, the RSS chief said both nations want India on their side, but India maintains that “both of you are friends” and, therefore, we will not take sides now.

This is not the era of war, hence, stop it, India has maintained, Bhagwat asserted.

“The India of today has the strength to say this to the world’s superpowers, something it lacked in the past,” he said.

Sri Lanka was once a friend of China and Pakistan and kept India at a distance, but the island nation turned towards India when it was in trouble (economic downturn).

“Because the country (India) which believes in Dharma does not take advantage of anyone. We take advantage of each other for mutual existence, but it is an exchange of love and not a bargain,” Bhagwat said.

Whenever anyone needs what belongs to us, the country will offer it because this is what our forefathers have directed us to do as a duty, Bhagwat added.

“For a country to perform its duty, it will need a culture that is based on the unity of the world. Our culture, our dharma is not orthodox. It is something that changes with time. Our culture will not tell us what to eat and not to eat. But it will tell us not to consume food that spoils our health,” Bhagwat said.

Another close aid of the pro khalistani leader, Papalpreet Singh was arrested on April 10, in an operation conducted by Punjab Police and its counter-intelligence unit.

The radical leader had been declared a “fugitive” while he was on a run earlier in March.

“Waris Punjab De’ chief Amritpal Singh has been declared a fugitive. His two cars were seized and gunmen nabbed. We also checked if the firearms of his security escorts had been procured legally. A case has been registered. Punjab Police have launched a manhunt for Amritpal Singh and we are hopeful that he will be arrested soon. A total of 78 people have been arrested so far and further searches and raids are underway,” Chahal said in an exclusive interview with ANI.

Himachal Pradesh BJP chief submits resignation to Nadda

    [ad_1]

Shimla: Ahead of the Shimla Municipal Corporation polls, Himachal Pradesh BJP chief Suresh Kashyap has handed over his resignation to the party’s national president BJP Nadda, sources said on Friday.

According to BJP office bearers, Kashyap cited “personal reasons” for resigning from his post.

Kashyap, who was appointed as the chief of the BJP’s Himachal Pradesh unit on July 22, 2020, following the resignation of Rajeev Bindal, had a lacklustre tenure. The party suffered defeat in the bypolls to the Mandi Lok Sabha seat and in Arki, Fatehpur and Jubbal-Kotkhai Assembly constituencies in November 2021. It also lost the Assembly polls held in December 2022.

A two-time MLA from Pachhad, Kashyap was also elected to the Lok Sabha in 2019.

EAM Jaishankar discusses Sudan situation with UN chief Guterres

    [ad_1]

United Nations: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday discussed the worsening situation in Sudan with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and said the focus is really on how to get the diplomatic processes to yield the desired result of a workable, on-the-ground observed ceasefire.

Jaishankar met Guterres and also discussed a range of issues, including India’s presidency of the G20 and the Ukraine conflict.

Jaishankar said the focus is really on how to get the diplomatic processes to yield the desired result of a workable, on-the-ground observed ceasefire.

    MS Education Academy

He is headed on a nine-day trip to Guyana, Panama, Colombia and the Dominican Republic beginning on Friday, his first visit as the external affairs minister to these Latin American countries and the Caribbean.

Before his travel to Latin America, he arrived in New York and met the UN chief at the UN headquarters here on Thursday afternoon.

Noting that he had a “very good meeting” with Guterres, Jaishankar said once the fighting in Sudan started out, “I felt that it was very important” that he met the UN Secretary-General Guterres.

“Most of our meeting was on the Sudan situation. We also of course discussed the G20 and we also spend some time on the Ukraine conflict. But essentially it was about the Sudan” situation, he said.

Jaishankar said that in Sudan, the UN is at “the heart of the efforts” to establish a ceasefire.

“And that is really key because at the moment, unless there is a ceasefire and unless there are corridors, it is not safe for people to really come out,” he said.

“The UN is doing its bit talking to everybody. We of course have obviously very strong interest in the matter because so many Indians are there,” Jaishankar added.

Around 300 people, including an Indian, have been killed, and more than 3,000 injured in clashes in Sudan, according to the World Health Organisation. The violence between forces from Sudan’s army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) erupted on Saturday.

  • Teachers union chief hires seasoned lawyer ahead of Hill testimony

Teachers union chief hires seasoned lawyer ahead of Hill testimony

    [ad_1]

She’s turned to Michael Bromwich, senior counsel at the white shoe Steptoe law firm, for help.

“It is undeniable that the pandemic resulted in tragic and continuing consequences for children,” Bromwich wrote on the union’s behalf Wednesday to subcommittee chair Brad Wenstrup (R-Ohio) and ranking member Raul Ruiz (D-Calif.).

“We make no progress towards addressing those very real problems by engaging in the type of scapegoating built on false allegations that appear to be the basis for this Subcommittee’s ‘investigation,’” Bromwich wrote in his letter to lawmakers, which was obtained by POLITICO.

Bromwich is widely known in Washington for his work representing former FBI deputy director Andrew McCabe during the Trump-Russia investigation and Christine Blasey Ford, the California professor who alleged she was sexually assaulted by Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

A former Justice Department inspector general, Bromwich has garnered a reputation as a pugnacious defender. His message to congressional Republicans on Wednesday suggests he will deploy a similar strategy.

Earlier this month, Wenstrup asked Weingarten to testify at an April 26 hearing on the consequences of Covid-19’s school closures.

That request followed a March 28 letter from Wenstrup to Weingarten, which informed the teachers’ union chief that the select committee was investigating “potential political interference” with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance on reopening schools issued in February 2021.

Wenstrup’s March 28 letter alleged the union was granted “uncommon” access to edit the guidance before its release, citing media reports at the time, which it said ultimately resulted in the CDC advising that schools should remain closed in much of the country.

Bromwich countered that the union shared its views on the planned guidance in late January 2021 during a conference call between Weingarten, senior union staff, CDC officials and President Joe Biden’s office.

AFT officials then followed up in February 2021 to suggest language related to accommodations for high-risk educators and staff, and also proposed that the CDC include language that said its guidance may need to be updated in light of new virus variants.

In addition, the union also proposed a “trigger” threshold that would determine when schools should be closed based on positive test cases. But the CDC rejected that suggestion, according to Bromwich.

“The claim that the AFT’s agenda was ‘keeping schools closed,’ and that it shifted CDC’s guidance to match that agenda, is utterly false,” Bromwich wrote to lawmakers on Wednesday.

“In fact, the AFT’s role was extremely limited,” he wrote. “It proposed changes that amounted to a few sentences in a 38-page document. The need to clarify these points was obvious and should have been uncontroversial.”

Wenstrup has asked Weingarten to supply documents, communications and a list of meetings between the AFT and the CDC, department of Health and Human Services and the Executive Office of the President regarding the guidance, among other items.

Wenstrup also issued similar requests to more than a dozen other organizations — including the National Education Association, AASA, The School Superintendents Association; the National Association of Secondary School Principals the National Association of Elementary School Principals and National School Boards Association.

Weingarten “welcomes the opportunity to testify and cooperate with the committee’s work,” an AFT spokesperson said on Wednesday.

A spokesperson for Wenstrup did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Will tender unconditional apology to fmr TERI chief, Arnab to Delhi HC

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Former NDTV promoter Prannoy Roy’s lawyer said that he will take instructions while Republic TV Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami’s counsel apprised the Delhi High Court that he will tender an unconditional apology in a contempt case filed by late environmentalist and former The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) chief R.K. Pachauri.

Pachauri had filed a contempt of court petition in February 2016, alleging several media houses for deliberately and contemptuously not following the court’s orders restricting them from publishing sexual harassment claims against him.

“The counsel for respondent No. 5 (Arnab Goswami) states that she as well will file an affidavit tendering unconditional apology within a period of one (1) week. It is ordered accordingly,” Justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora recorded in his order.

    MS Education Academy

The Economic Times and its Senior Assistant Editor Raghav Ohri have already tendered an unconditional apology in the matter.

“The learned counsel for the Respondent Nos. 2 (Economic Times) and 3 (Ohri) states that he has filed an affidavit on behalf of Respondent Nos. 2 and 3, tendering their unconditional apology. Let the same be brought on record within a period of three (3) days,” Justice Arora ordered.

Pachauri had said that he was being subjected to a media trial and that the reports carried by the publications were defamatory and prejudiced his case.

Pachauri, who passed away in 2020, was accused of sexually harassing a colleague while he led the TERI.
