Migrant labourers attack: Tamil Nadu BJP chief booked for inciting violence

    [ad_1]

Chennai: A day after Tamil Nadu Bharatiya Janata Party chief K Annamalai held the ruling DMK party responsible for the ongoing stir over alleged attacks on migrant labourers in the state, the police have booked him on charges of inciting violence and promoting enmity between groups.

The Cyber Crime Division have booked the BJP state unit chief under sections of inciting violence and promoting enmity between groups among others.

As per officials, a case is also registered against the BJP Bihar Twitter account holder over the incident.

Annamalai yesterday released a statement on the migrant labourers’ issue saying they are safe in Tamil Nadu but the Chief Minister Stalin led-Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and its alliance party leaders are the reason for the hate against them.

He also opposed the spread of false news on the attack on the people from Bihar in the state, saying that Tamils don’t support “separatism” and “vile hatred” against north Indians.

“It is disheartening to see fake news spread in social media about attacks on Migrant workers in Tamil Nadu. We, the Tamil people, believe in the concept of “The World is One” and do not endorse the separatism and vile hatred against our North Indian friends,” Annamalai said in a series of tweets.

Hitting out at the state government, he said, “DMK’s MPs’ vile comments on North Indians, DMK minister calling them Panipuri Wala, and their alliance partners demanding their exodus has triggered what we see today.”

He further said that the people, the Government and the police, do not endorse the views of DMK and their alliance partners.
Besides, Annamalai, the Tamil Nadu police have also booked four persons including a BJP spokesperson Prashant Umrao and two journalists.

Prashant Umrao, an Editor with Dainik Bhaskar, a Patna-based journalist, owner of ‘Tanvir Post’ Twitter handle Mohammad Tanvir, and Shubam Shukla were booked at different police stations on the charges of spreading “false” news regarding attacks on migrant labourers in Tamil Nadu.

A statewide panic was created among migrant workers, working in Tamil Nadu, after several purported videos, showing attacks on migrant workers, circulated on social media.

The panic was triggered after Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Thursday, raised concerns and took note of the purported videos of “attacks”.

The panic affected the industries in Tamil Nadu, which rely on migrant workers, badly as many workers stayed off work.

Taking cognizance of the panic, Tamil Nadu’s Director General of Police Sylendra Babu released a statement, saying that the video doing rounds of social media was “false” and “mischievous”.

“Somebody in Bihar posted false and mischievous videos saying that migrant workers were attacked in Tamil Nadu. Two videos were posted. Both are false as these incidents happened at an earlier date in Tiruppur and Coimbatore. One was a clash between two groups of migrant workers from Bihar while another was from a clash between two local residents in Coimbatore,” the top cop said.

The DGP also said that the persons behind this rumour-driven panic will not be spared.

Narrow escape for TPCC chief in road accident

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Six cars in the convoy of Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee president A. Revanth Reddy were damaged in an accident in Rajanna Sircilla district.

Few media persons travelling in two vehicles belonging to news channels were injured in the incident that occurred at Yellareddypet when Revanth Reddy was on his way for ongoing Haath Se Haath Jodo yatra.

Four SUVs, which were part of Revanth Reddy’s convoy, were damaged along with two media vehicles. The collision took place when the driver of one of the vehicles lost control and hit the vehicle moving in front. The cars following the first vehicle also rammed into each other.

Revanth Reddy and other occupants of SUVs had a narrow escape. The balloons in these vehicles opened due to the impact of the collision saving the passengers from major injuries.

However, few media persons travelling in two cars belonging to news channels were injured.

Revanth Reddy later left in another vehicle.

Meanwhile, the state government has informed the Telangana High Court that Revanth Reddy has been provided security during the ongoing yatra.

The TPCC chief had filed a petition seeking direction to the government to provide security in view of a recent incident in which supporters of ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) attacked the yatra.

Additional DGP, Intelligence, informed the High Court that a fax message had been sent to all unit officers of places where Revanth’s Haath Se Haath Jodo Yatra will pass through, instructing them to provide security.

Justice B. Vijaysen Reddy adjourned the hearing to Monday. He directed Revanth Reddy to inform the court whether he has been provided with security.

  • CJI skips SCBA’s Holi event after spat with Bar body chief

CJI skips SCBA’s Holi event after spat with Bar body chief

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud on Friday skipped the ‘Holi Milan’ event organised by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) where he was to be present the chief guest.

On Thursday, a heated exchange of words was witnessed between the CJI and SCBA president Vikas Singh during the hearing of a matter related to allotment of land at Appu Ghar’ for lawyers’ chambers. The CJI had to direct the senior lawyer not to raise his voice and leave the court.

The SCBA had organised a poetry recital on Friday where the CJI was invited as the chief guest. Eminent poets like Ashok Chakradhar and Shambhu Shikhar recited their poems at the event.

During the mentioning of cases, the SCBA president told a bench of the CJI and justices PS Narasimha and JB Pardiwala that he was struggling to get the matter listed for the last six months.

“The Appu Ghar land came to the Supreme Court on a petition by the SCBA and the Bar was given only one block with reluctance. The construction on the land was to begin during ex-CJI N V Ramana’s tenure. For the last six months, we are struggling to get the matter listed. Treat me like an ordinary litigant,” Singh said.

“You can’t demand land like this. You tell us the day we are sitting idle for the whole day,” Justice Chandrachud responded sharply.

To this, Singh replied, “I am not saying that you are sitting idle for the whole day. I am only trying to get the matter listed. If it is not done, I will have to escalate and take it to your lordships’ residence. I don’t want the Bar to be taken like this.”

    Singh’s remarks got Chandrachud’s goat.

“Don’t threaten the chief justice. Is this a way to behave? Please sit down. It will not be listed like this. Please leave my court. I will not list like this. I will not be cowered down by you.

“Mr Vikas Singh, please don’t raise your voice. As a president, you should be mentor and leader to the Bar. I am sorry, you are reducing the level of dialogue. You have filed an Article 32 petition, claiming that the land allotted to the Supreme Court should be handed over to the Bar for construction of chambers. We will deal with the matter when it comes. Please don’t try and twist our arm to give you the relief you want,” the CJI said.

The CJI said he had already announced his decision and the matter will be taken up on March 17th. It will, however, not be the first on board, he added.

The SCBA president said, “If my lords want to dismiss it, please do it. But don’t do that it is not listed.”

The CJI replied, “I have announced my verdict. It’s on March 17 and it will not be listed at serial number 1, Mr Singh.”

The senior lawyer refused to relent and said the Bar has always supported the court.

“I never want to be unreasonable but I am forced to do so in this case,” he said.

Chandrachud then told Singh, “I am the chief justice. I have been here since March 29, 2000. I have been in this profession for 22 years. I have never allowed myself to be browbeaten by a member of the Bar, litigant or anyone else. I will not do that in the final two years of my career.”

Refusing to keep quiet, Singh said, “This is not the attitude. If the Bar is cooperating with the court, it doesn’t mean it should be taken for a ride. That is something which I feel very strongly. I want to make this very clear.”

“Please sort your agenda outside the courtroom,” Chandrachud said curtly and called the next matter.

Delhi HC rejects PIL against appointment of MP-IDSA chief

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Friday rejected a plea against Sujan R. Chinoy’s appointment as the Director General of Manohar Parrikar Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses (MP-IDSA) in January 2019.

A division bench of Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Subramonium Prasad was hearing lawyer petitioner Subhash Chandran K.R.’s Public Interest Litigation (PIL) contending that it concerns a prominent post in defence for which no advertisement was published.

The bench said that since it relates to a service matter, it cannot be maintained and no case for interference can be made out.

“In the considered opinion of this court, as the present PIL is in relation to a service matter, no case is made out for interference in the matter. Admission is declined,” it said.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta has said that this appointment is made by a committee consisting of the Cabinet Secretary, the Defence Secretary, and two persons of eminence and the “petitioner has no connection. He is a stranger”.

Noting that there is no advertisement for a lot of high offices, the bench dismissed the PIL.

The PIL claimed that the institute did not obey to the rules for a public appointment which was “an act of lawlessness cutting at the very root of the strict mandate of Articles 14 and 16 of the Constitution”.

Army pushed back Chinese under Rajiv Gandhi’s leadership: Cong chief Kharge

    [ad_1]

Chennai: The Army under the leadership of Rajiv Gandhi valiantly fought and pushed back the Chinese in 1987 along the border and it is important that the Congress became strong once again for a progressive India, party president Mallikarjun Kharge said on Thursday.

After laying a wreath at the memorial of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi at Sriperumbudur near here, Kharge traced the late leader’s services to the nation.

“In 1986, Rajiv Gandhi granted statehood to Arunachal Pradesh despite Chinese opposition. Later, in 1987, during the military standoff in Tawang, the Indian government ensured that we did not give up our claims along the border. Thus, Indian Army under the leadership of Rajiv Gandhi valiantly fought and pushed back the Chinese,” Kharge said.

For the unity, integrity and progress of the country, it is important that the Congress should become strong once again, he said in a statement released here by the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee.

It is only the Congress party that can build a modern and progressive India. “In this fight for building a modern and progressive India, Rajiv Gandhi will always remain a source of inspiration for the Congress party and the youth of our country,” Kharge added.

  • With invasions, our traditional systems got destroyed: RSS chief

With invasions, our traditional systems got destroyed: RSS chief

    [ad_1]

Nagpur: Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat on Thursday said every Indian should have some basic awareness of the country’s traditional knowledge base.\

He was speaking at the inauguration of the Aryabhatta Astronomy Park at Kanholibara in Nagpur district.

“Everyone should have at least some basic knowledge of what we have in our tradition, which can be gained through the education system as well as through general conversations between people,” he said.

Historically India possessed a scientific approach of looking at things but with invasions, “our systems got destroyed and our culture of knowledge got fragmented,” the RSS chief said.

If Indians explored their traditional knowledge base and found what is acceptable for the present times, “many problems of the world can be solved with our solutions”, he said.

The world outside is possessive about knowledge, he said, giving the example of some countries claiming to be the birthplace of Yoga, and even patents being filed there to acquire proprietary rights on it.

“Knowledge is to be given to the wise seeker. Knowledge should reach all,” Bhagwat said.

But as others seek to appropriate knowledge, it is important that we at least know what our traditions contain, he said.

India’s traditional knowledge base is vast, the RSS chief said, adding that some of our ancient books were lost while in some cases people with vested interests got wrong viewpoints inserted in ancient works.

The syllabus prepared under the New Education Policy includes some things which were missing earlier, Bhagwat said.

  • UN chief Guterres visits Iraq to show solidarity

UN chief Guterres visits Iraq to show solidarity

    [ad_1]

United Nations: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres met senior Iraqi leaders here on Wednesday during a visit aimed at showing the UN solidarity with Iraq.

“I am here on a visit of solidarity and confirmation of the commitment of the United Nations to support Iraq in consolidating its democratic institutions and promoting peace, development, and human rights for all Iraqis,” Guterres said at a joint news conference with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani, Xinhua news agency reported.

Earlier on Wednesday, the UN chief held a meeting with al-Sudani to discuss the UN-Iraqi relations, the climate challenges and Iraq’s need for international assistance in this regard, said the Iraqi premier’s media office in a statement.

They also discussed Iraq’s efforts in promoting human rights and sustainable development, as well as its “pioneer role” in reducing regional tensions, said the statement.

At the press conference, Guterres called on the international community to support Iraq in addressing environmental challenges and diversifying the economy, as Iraq is among the countries most affected by climate change.

For his part, al-Sudani said that, although his government has improved political and security stability in Iraq, the country still faces climate and environmental challenges such as desertification and low precipitation.

These problems “coincided with the water policies of the riparian countries, whether by reducing water flows or changing the course of the rivers, which constitutes a challenge to life in general,” he said.

Guterres arrived in the Iraqi capital on Tuesday and he has also met Iraq President Abdul Latif Rashid, Parliament Speaker Mohammed al-Halbousi and Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein.

Guterres was scheduled to visit Erbil, the capital of the semi-autonomous region of Kurdistan, to meet with the Kurdish leaders.
