Police action against Rahul Gandhi a cowardly act by Modi govt: Maha Cong chief

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Maharashtra Congress president Nana Patole has said the police action against party leader Rahul Gandhi was a “cowardly” act by the panic-stricken Narendra Modi government.

He said the prime minister’s attempt to suppress Rahul Gandhi’s voice by using the police will not succeed and Congress will continue to seek answers on the alleged scam by industrialist Gautam Adani.

Patole’s comments came on Sunday when Rahul Gandhi faced a Delhi Police team that reached his residence to inquire about his “women are still being sexually assaulted” statement made during the Bharat Jodo Yatra.

“I condemn the police action against Rahul Gandhi which is a cowardly act by the panic-stricken Modi regime,” Patole told reporters.

He said Rahul Gandhi and the Congress party are not scared due to the oppression unleashed by the authoritarian Modi government. “The Congress party will bring the dark truth about Adani-Modi before the country,” he added.

“PM Modi is scared because Rahul Gandhi in the Lok Sabha exposed a multi-crore scam of Gautam Adani and also the PM’s relations with the industrialist. And because of this, the prime minister is trying to suppress Rahul Gandhi’s voice by using the police. But Rahul and the Congress party are not scared,” Patole added.

He said the Congress will continue to raise its voice along with Rahul Gandhi.

Patole said the Adani scam has put the common people of the country at risk of losing lakhs of crores of their hard-earned money put in the State Bank of India and the LIC.

“Investors have lost thousands of crores due to the collapse of Adani Group’s shares. Rahul Gandhi demanded an inquiry into the Adani Group scam through a Joint Parliamentary Committee.

“But instead of an inquiry, the government sent a notice to Rahul Gandhi for a statement he made during Bharat Jodo Yatra 45 days ago. They are now sending the police to his house for investigation,” the Congress leader said.

  • AIMIM chief Owaisi praises KCR in Bihar

AIMIM chief Owaisi praises KCR in Bihar

    [ad_1]

Patna: AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi showered praise on K Chandrasekhara Rao, the Chief Minister of his home state of Telangana, which is bracing for assembly elections later this year.

The Hyderabad MP was replying to queries from journalists in Bihar’s Kishanganj district, before winding up his tour of “Seemanchal”, a densely populated but poverty-ridden and flood-prone region of the state.

“I must say KCR has a vision. And he has done something worthwhile during his tenure, so far,” said Owaisi on Sunday in reply to a question about Prime Ministerial ambitions of regional satraps like Rao. Owaisi also praised KCR’s counterparts in Bihar and West Bengal, Nitish Kumar and Mamata Banerjee, respectively.

“Telangana is a landlocked state. Yet it has a very impressive gross state domestic product. It used to rank the highest in terms of use of pump sets. It is still the second highest producer of fisheries,” said the AIMIM Chief, whose party has seven MLAs in the 119-strong assembly.

Although KCR’s party, the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), enjoys a brute majority, it faces a challenge in the upcoming elections with the BJP making inroads and, according to many political experts, tipped to replace the Congress as the principal opposition in Telangana.

Owaisi also lambasted the Congress and its allies for “crying democracy is in danger over what happened in Maharashtra but looking the other way when our MLAs in Bihar were lured away”.

The AIMIM had won five seats in the Bihar assembly polls of 2020 and four of its MLAs joined the RJD last year, one of them even getting a cabinet berth.

Owaisi said, “We wanted an alliance with Mahagathbandhan in 2020, but they derided us… Our performance was there for all to see. We had contested only 10 seats. In 2025, we will field our candidates in 50 constituencies of the 243-strong Bihar assembly”.

  • Watch: ‘Great success for Pakistan’: PCB chief Najam Sethi drops bombshell statement about IPL – Kashmir News

    [ad_1]

PSL 2023 Concluded with much fanfare on Saturday as Lahore Qalandars defeated Multan Sultans by one run to win their second title, in Lahore.

Meanwhile, there always remains a comparison between fans from both countries as to which is the better franchise-based T20 league. While IPL will be entering its 16th edition, starting March 31st, PSL completed its eighth season.

The defending champions Lahore Qalandars defeated the high-flying Multan Sultans in final by the barest of margins. Batting first, Lahore completed 200 runs, thanks to a 40-ball 65 from Abdullah Shafique and an out-of-the-world 15-ball 44* from the captain Shaheen Afridi, who smashed five sixes and two fours.

The chase was well-threaded by cameos from the top order, in which the man-in-form Rilee Rossouw top-scored with 52 from 32 balls. While the lower order also contributed with crucial runs, four wickets to seamer Afridi derailed their momentum going forward. In the end it all came down to the final over, where Zaman Khan successfully defended the target with just two runs remaining.

IPL has long been touted as the best T20 franchise league in the world, with some of the best cricketers plying their trade in India. But PCB chairman Najam Sethi had a different opinion and made a stunning statement that PSL has overtaken IPL in terms of digital rating.

Speaking in a press conference ahead of the final, Sethi said, “Let’s talk about digital. PSL was only at the half stage, so I asked about our digital rating. Najam Sethi show used to have a 0.5 rating on TV, whereas PSL is getting a rating of more than 11. So, it would be 18 or 20, when it completes.”

“Over 150 million people watched it digitally. It is not a small thing. At the same stage, IPL’s digital rating was 130 million and PSL’s is more than 150 million. So this is a great success for Pakistan”, he further added.

Sethi’s comments could surely create some controversy among Indian and Pakistan cricket fans. It would be interesting to see if a former Indian cricketer would respond to Sethi’s statement. With IPL 2023 set to start from March 31, defending champions Gujarat Titans will face Chennai Super Kings in the season opener, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

  • YSRCP will not come back to power: TDP chief

YSRCP will not come back to power: TDP chief

    [ad_1]

Amaravati: The results in the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council elections clearly indicate that YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) will not come to power again, former chief minister and TDP president, N. Chandrababu Naidu on Sunday.

Thanking the voters for the victory of TDP in all three graduates’ constituencies, Naidu told mediapersons here that the results clearly indicate the anti-incumbency. Terming it as a people’s victory, the TDP supremo said that by electing the TDP candidates people have reposed complete faith and confidence in the party.

Observing that the people have predicted the future of the state a couple of days before the Ugadi, Chandrababu Naidu said that the election results reflect the inconceivable pain of government employees, sufferings of farmers, underprivileged, common man and students who are over-burdened with rising prices.

The agony of an average person living in fear under an anarchic regime is completely reflected in these election results, the former chief minister felt.

“Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy always believes in money and muscle power and in indulging in atrocities. He transformed all the elections in these four years only as selections,” Chandrababu Naidu said, adding the YSRCP will soon disappear into oblivion.

Terming the latest polls as a “war between Jagan Reddy and the 5 crore people of the state”, the TDP supremo said that the destruction that he caused to the state and the large-scale corruption will certainly teach him a fitting lesson.

Chandrababu felt that the YSRCP will not be in power again and expressed concern that even senior IAS and IPS officers too are becoming partners in the crimes being committed by Jagan Reddy.

Though the courts have pulled up this government several times, the ruling party leaders have not learnt any lessons, he remarked.

He slammed the YSRCP government for imposing restrictions on the opposition. He said that democracy has certain checks and balances and the ruling party should follow them religiously to win the people’s confidence.

He expressed surprise that even the directions of the Election Commission are not being honoured and felt that the bureaucrats are resorting to atrocities only to win the confidence of Jagan.

He wondered how officials refuse to hand over the declaration forms to the candidates who won the polls. The TDP leader felt that the bureaucrats should be partners in progress but not partners in committing crime.

Naidu said that Ram Gopal Reddy, who was declared elected in the polls, was illegally arrested.

The graduates constituencies polls covered 108 Assembly segments and 5,000 to 25,000 voters cast their ballot in each segment, the former chief minister said and stated that money, silver articles and other materials were distributed to the voters everywhere.

Even voters were enrolled with fake graduate certificates, he said and observed that despite all such atrocities the voters reposed confidence only in the TDP.

RSS chief Bhagwat advises farmers to adopt cow-based farming

    [ad_1]

Meerut: Changing farming methods is necessary not only for India but the world, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat said on Sunday and advised farmers to adopt cow-based farming.

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) leader was speaking at a farmers’ conference organised by the Bharatiya Kisan Sangh in Hastinapur.

“Cow-based farming does not disturb the cycle of nature. Our farmers are worried. All their demands cannot be met, so the cost of cultivation has to be reduced. This is possible only with cow-based farming,” Bhagwat said.

Exhorting the farmers to shun the use of chemicals, he added, “Our land has been ploughed for thousands of years. Yet, it is still fertile. We have seen the loss of agricultural production by increasing it indiscriminately.

“Chemicals being used in farming are entering our bodies and making us sick.”

Bhagwat said the government might change the policies but the farmers will have to do the work to save agriculture and nature.

During his visit, the RSS chief also stopped by the ancient historical sites from the “Mahabharata” period in Hastinapur.

“What fascinating issues!” Friedman declared wryly as Howell remained stone-faced on the dais. “We’d all love to read her opinions, but we can’t,” he said to laughter.

Friedman did note, however, that Howell had issued 100 secret grand jury opinions during her seven-year term.

Another colleague, Judge Tanya Chutkan, also alluded to Howell’s work resolving disputes related to the court’s grand juries over the past seven years.

“There’s so much work Chief Judge Howell has done that we may never know about,” Chutkan said.

Another tribute to Howell came from Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, who served on the district court in D.C. before being elevated to the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals and then the Supreme Court. Jackson said Howell has been vital to keeping the critical district court in the Capital operating through a series of major challenges.

“She’s like that steel beam in a construction project that holds everything else up,” Jackson said.

Howell was replaced as chief Friday by Judge James Boasberg. Both are appointees of President Barack Obama.

Boasberg also referenced Howell’s handling of secret grand jury proceedings.

“Most of the work she has done has been secret so she doesn’t even get credit for that,” he said.

By law, the chief judge position on federal courts is filled chiefly by seniority, with a maximum term of seven years. Howell, a former prosecutor and Senate aide who has served on the U.S. District Court since 2010, will continue to hear cases in the normal rotation.

No major shift in the direction of the court or those probes is expected as a result of the change, but Boasberg will now have to resolve privilege fights and other disputes at the grand jury and could receive remands from the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals, which is now considering several appeals related to Howell’s decisions.

Howell’s work overseeing the high-profile grand jury matters involving former special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia, the ongoing Trump probes and the criminal cases stemming from the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol have brought her a cult following on social media.

Chutkan alluded to that fame in her remarks Friday, pointing to memes about Howell on TikTok and to “stans” who applauded her rulings.

People may have different modes of worship but should realise goal is same: RSS chief

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat on Friday underlined the Vedas’ acknowledgement of various paths undertaken by people to realise the spiritual truth and asserted that the world needs this understanding at this time of conflicts.

Speaking here at the release of Urdu and Hindi translations of the Samveda, one of the four Vedas which are regarded as foundational texts of Hinduism, Bhagwat said different people may have different modes of worship but what should be realised is that the goal is the same.

One should not fight over different means and this is the message which is relevant for all and is something that India has to offer to others, the top functionary of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) said.

In his speech, Bhagwat quoted various parables sourced to ancient texts to stress that the same truth can be perceived differently by different people.

The one who guides all is known by different names, he said, underlining the need for interfaith harmony.

“Methods (of worship) and paths could be different, but destiny is the same. Look at destiny and move towards it. Don’t fight with each other over methods. This is the message that India has to send out to the world,” Bhagwat said.

Citing a story, the RSS chief said various persons can approach the top of a mountain using different paths. While they may believe that others have taken the wrong way, the one on the top can see that everybody is climbing towards the same goal, he said.

“The world needs to understand this truth. All over the world, there is discord between humans. There is discord between humans and nature as well. Humans have invited this crisis and the solution is in their hands. They will have to change the way they think,” Bhagwat said.

The Urdu and Hindi translations of Samveda have been done by film writer and director Iqbal Durrani, who has been associated with various big-budget Hindi movies, especially in the 1990s.

Speaking at the event, Durrani said Dara Shikoh, the eldest son of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan, had translated various scriptures into Persian and wanted to translate Vedas also but did not survive to do so.

“What could not be done them has been done today during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s regime with me translating Samveda… Aurangzeb lost today and Narendra Modi ji won,” he said.

Senior RSS leaders Krishna Gopal, Ram Lal and Indresh Kumar and others from Sangh attended the event.

Actors Suniel Shetty, Mukesh Khanna, Jaya Prada, Gajendra Chouhan and singer Anoop Jalota were also present at the event along with other dignitaries including religious leaders from different faiths.

Contempt petition: Cal HC asks SSC chief to be personally present on March 24

    [ad_1]

Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Friday directed the chairman of the West Bengal School Service Commission to be personally present before it on March 24 in connection with contempt petitions moved by candidates alleging they were not awarded marks for out of syllabus questions in the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) of 2011 as ordered earlier.

The court held that an affidavit of compliance filed before it by the chairman of SSC is not acceptable.

Directing the SSC chairman to appear before the court personally on March 24, Justice Rajasekhar Mantha observed that it is apparent that marks for questions out of the syllabus have not been awarded to any of the petitioners.

The marks in question are for the TET qualification, which is the first stage of the state level selection test (SLST) of 2011, the court said.

After qualifying with the minimum number of marks stipulated by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), a candidate qualifies for the other stages, which are the personality test and interview.

Justice Mantha directed that the pendency of the contempt proceeding will not prevent the SSC from awarding the marks to the petitioners as was directed in an order of June 29, 2022.

He directed that a fresh compliance report be furnished by the chairman of the SSC on March 24, when the matter will be heard again.

The five contempt petitions, involving 83 candidates, were filed alleging that the order of June 29 was not given effect by the SSC.

  • Telangana BJP chief detained during protest over paper leak

Telangana BJP chief detained during protest over paper leak

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Police on Friday detained Telangana BJP president Bandi Sanjay, MLA Eatala Rajender and others when they were trying to march to the office of Telangana State Public Service Commission (TSPSC) office to protest exam paper leak.

Tension prevailed at Telangana Martyrs’ Memorial Gun Park near Assembly building when police stopped Sanjay and other BJP leaders from proceeding towards TSPSC office in Nampally.

The police officers told BJP leaders that there was no permission for a rally.

As Sanjay and his supporters tried to march forward, police forcibly stopped them.

This led to pushing and jostling between the two sides.

Police detained Sanjay, Rajender and B. Narsaiah Goud. Both were whisked away in a vehicle to police station.

The BJP workers tried to stop the police vehicle carrying their leaders but police arrested them.

The protest triggered tension in the busy area in central Hyderabad and disrupted movement of traffic.

Earlier, Sanjay along with a large number of supporters took out a padyatra from BJP office to Gun Park.

The protesters were raising slogans against the BRS government and displaying placards to protest over leakage of question paper of an exam recently conducted by the TSPSC for recruitment of assistant engineers in various departments.

Sanjay, who is also a Member of Parliament, had announced that after paying tributes to Telangana martyrs, he will sit on protest at BJP office.

However, suddenly changing his plan he sat on protest at Gun Park.

Police told him that there is no permission for the protest. However, he remained seated there with his supporters. Some police officials held talks with him.

With the police softening their stand, Sanjay continued protest for some time.

Later, he announced that he will march to TSPSC office. Police immediately went on alert and prevented him and others from taking out the rally.

The BJP leader demanded probe by a sitting judge into the question paper leakage.

Alleging that leaders of the ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) were involved in the scam, he said the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the state police cannot conduct an impartial probe.

Earlier, the police also arrested Youth Congress leaders and workers who tried to march towards TSPSC office from Congress headquarters Gandhi Bhavan.

Police also arrested BSP’s Telangana unit president R.S. Praveen Kumar when he began hunger strike at party office in Lakdi Ka Pul area.

He was demanding a CBI inquiry into the paper leak.

Hyderabad: BSP state chief detained amid hunger strike over TSPSC paper leak

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) Telangana chief RS Praveen Kumar was taken into custody by the Telangana police on Friday ahead of his indefinite hunger strike over the leak of the Telangana State Public Service Commission (TSPSC) Assistant Engineer (civil) exam paper.

The BSP supremo was holding an indefinite hunger strike at his party office on Lakdikapul when the police took him into custody.

Praveen Kumar had demanded that the group I exams be cancelled and the investigation into the leak be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation.

In a statement on Wednesday Kumar had stated that he was giving the state government 48 hours to hand over the case to the central agency or he would take up a fast onto death.

Demanding that the TSPSC chairman Janadhanan redyy step down immediately, he stated that he would write to the President and Gocernot over the same.

He also questioned Telangana chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao and state IT minister KT Rama Rao’s silence on the same.

“All the examinations held during Janardhan Reddy’s tenure should be cancelled and re-conducted. TSPSC has lost the trust of Telangana people. Details of candidates who have crossed 100 marks in Group 1 Prelims should be disclosed,” said Praveen Kumar.

The BSP leader also alleged that the government was attempting to wash its hands of the case by handing it over to an SIT and terming the leak as a technical error.
