China aims to replace US as global net security provider, says Army chief Manoj Pande

    [ad_1]

Pune: Chief of Army Staff General Manoj Pande has said transgressions remain the potential trigger for escalations along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China and asserted India has adequate reserves and was prepared to deal with any contingency.

Speaking at an event here on Monday, he also said China wants to replace the United States as a global net security provider and cited Beijing’s involvement in brokering recent peace talks between arch-rivals Saudi Arabia and Iran and putting forth a peace plan to end the 13-month-long Russia-Ukraine war.

The Army chief said China has accrued significant capacities for force mobilization, application, and sustenance of military operations and maintained the long-pending boundary issue can not be divorced from bilateral relations between the two Asian giants.

General Pande said Chinese attempts to carry out transgressions across the LAC in violations of past agreements/protocols remain a matter of concern for India, but the Army’s preparedness remains of a high order, comments coming in the backdrop of the border standoff in eastern Ladakh since May 2020.

He was speaking at the 2nd Strategic Dialogue on ‘Rise of China and its Implications for the World’, organized by the Savitribai Phule Pune University and the New Delhi-based Centre for China Analysis and Strategy.

“I think the most important aspect of our operational environment remains our legacy challenges of the unsettled and disputed borders. Pockets of dispute and contested claims to the territory continue to exist due to differing perceptions of the alignment of the Line of Actual Control. Transgressions remain the potential trigger for escalations,” the Chief of Army Staff cautioned.

Hence, Sino-Indian border management requires close monitoring as infirmities can lead to a wider conflict, General Pande said.

“As we all knew we have agreements/protocols — (signed in) 1993, 1996, 2005, and 2013 — in the military domain to maintain peace and tranquillity on the LAC. Of concerns remain the violations of these by China — with their attempt to carry out — transgressions across the LAC,” he said.

The decades-old boundary issue cannot be divorced from bilateral relations, General Pande asserted and went on to quote External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, who had said, “for (India-China) ties to return to the positive trajectory and remain sustainable, they must be based on three mutual sensitivity respect, and interest.”

New Delhi has repeatedly maintained that its ties with Beijing cannot be normal unless there is peace in the border areas.

General Pande said engagement mechanisms exist at political, diplomatic, and military levels between the two countries which are optimally utilized to ensure stability along the LAC.

Talks are continuing under these establishment mechanisms, he said.

“China has accrued significant capacities for force mobilization, application, and sustenance of military operations. It has built infrastructure of military significance — be it roads, airfields, helipads, and so on,” the Army chief added.

He said the Indian Army’s strategic orientation and long-term capability development have been with a focus on the northern border.

“We have carried out the required rebalancing of the forces to affect the desired response on the northern border,” General Pande said.

The Army chief insisted India has adequate reserves and was prepared to deal with any contingency.

“Our preparedness remains of a high order and troops continued to deal with PLA (China’s People’s Liberation Army) in a firm, resolute, and measured manner while ensuring the sanctity of our claims,” he asserted.

General Pande stated that the Indian Army has ramped up its efforts to fructify the operationally critical logistical requirements, especially roads in the forward areas.
The Indian Army is working in synergy with all agencies in the forward areas to upgrade infrastructure, he added.

General Pande said after becoming an economic powerhouse, China is looking to enhance its global role.

“Brokering peace talks between Saudi Arabia and Iran, and putting forth the Chinese 12-point peace plan for ending the Russia-Ukraine conflict, are reflective of a Chinese urgency to replace the US as a global net security provider,” he said.

Talking about China’s rapid economic rise, General Pande noted that the Communist giant’s growth in the economic domain has been unprecedented.

“Within a few decades of initiating widespread reforms, it transitioned from a largely agrarian economy into a world leader in manufacturing and services sectors. Due to its industrial prowess, it also earned a name for itself as the ‘world’s factory’. Following this success, many developing countries and their leaders have looked to emulate China,” he said.

The Army chief pointed out that China today stands as the world’s largest economy in Purchasing Power Parity terms (based on buying power) and its economic expansion was multifaceted.

“On the one hand, it is building an ‘international network of coercion through predatory economics’, while on the other it claims to pull more than 100 million of its own people out of poverty.

“Its efforts to expand the sphere of influence through economic manoeuvring, weaponization of resource supply chains, financing large infrastructure projects with scant regard for environmental and safety standards and straddling recipient countries with unsustainable debt, are there for the world to see,” he said.

The Chief of Army Staff said issues of concern continue to exist in cases of theft of Intellectual Property Rights, stealing trade secrets and technology from foreign companies as also unfair trade practices.

    Voiced by artificial intelligence.

BRUSSELS — A top European Union official is leaving his role in charge of transport policy, following POLITICO’s revelations that he accepted free flights on Qatar Airways while his team negotiated a major aviation deal with the Gulf state.

Henrik Hololei, director general of the European Commission’s transport department, faced an internal investigation into the flights, and whether he was right to clear himself of any conflict of interest.

On Wednesday, POLITICO revealed Hololei will leave his job as director general of the transport department, known in the Brussels lexicon as DG MOVE, and will become a political adviser with no management responsibility in DG INTPA, the Commission’s department in charge of international partnerships.

A spokesperson for the Commission later confirmed to reporters that Hololei would move to his new role on April 1.

Hololei himself announced his job switch in an email to staff. “Dear friends and colleagues,” Hololei wrote. “I wanted to let you know myself that Friday will be my last day at DG MOVE. I am sure that you have seen the recent press coverage of my participation in international conferences.

“This has become a distraction, and is preventing DG MOVE from moving forward with the files that are so important for the safer, more sustainable, smarter and more resilient transport system that Europe needs and deserves,” he said. “I have asked to be moved to another position, which I will take up at DG INTPA.”

POLITICO reported a month ago that Hololei flew business class for free on Qatar Airways nine times between 2015 and 2021, according to details obtained through freedom of information requests. Six of the free flights occurred while the market access agreement between the EU and Doha was being put together, and four of these were paid for by the government of Qatar or a group with links to Qatar.

The disclosures immediate triggered a storm of criticism, calls for an inquiry and demands to overhaul the rules. The Commission initially insisted Hololei had not broken any rules, but then later moved to tighten those same rules to make sure his behavior could not be repeated in future. An internal investigation is under way into the flights, after officials confirmed that Hololei himself had been the person who signed off on the ethical question of whether they represented a conflict of interest.

In recent days, POLITICO has reported on calls from within the Commission for Hololei to step aside.

The episode comes at a highly sensitive time for the EU. The Brussels institutions are already battling to save their reputation amid a corruption scandal involving allegations that Qatar and other foreign governments paid MEPs and others to do their bidding in the European Parliament.

Ursula von der Leyen, president of the Commission, vowed in light of the so-called Qatargate scandal to crack down on corruption, throwing her weight behind the idea of an ethical oversight body that would be able to probe and penalize misdeeds across all EU institutions.

While the Parliament is undergoing reforms to avoid future corruption problems, the Commission and the Council of the EU have not been involved in the scandal and stopped short of announcing any internal changes as a result.

But the Hololei case, which centered on a senior official closely involved with a major transport deal crucial to the Gulf state, widened the focus of scrutiny to include the European Commission, which is in charge proposing EU legislation.

Burqa-clad women protest in Pak for release of political outfit’s chief

    [ad_1]

Islamabad: Following the arrest of Maulana Hidayatur Rehman, chief of Pakistani political outfit Haq Do Tehreek (HDT), in January, the situation in Gwadar has been calm so far. But after the lifting of section 144 in the town, protests against the Maulanas arrest have simmered again.

A demonstration by Burqa-clad women on Sunday raised the voice for Maulana Hidayat’s release, Dawn reported.

Maasi Zainab is the female face of the Gwadar agitation that has grabbed the nation’s attention for over a year.

According to Zainab, the HDT chief was put behind bars for no reason.

“He is being punished for speaking out against the injustice meted out to the people of Gwadar,” Zainab said while speaking to Dawn in this town’s Mullah Band area, near the deep sea port.

“Our fishermen were not being allowed to go out to the sea due to security considerations. Families had to go without a square meal for days together.

“But after the protests led by Maulana Hidayat, the authorities provided a little relief to fishermen. Now we are able to make ends meet.”

According to Zaini, as she is commonly known, the Maulana has given a voice to the inhabitants of Gwadar, who were largely ignored by the authorities while charting out an uplift plan for this port town, Dawn reported.

Another vocal woman here is Zargul Baloch, a member of the HDT. She was one of the leading organisers behind the women’s march.

While speaking to Dawn, she laments that the state does not bother to meet the citizens’ basic needs like water, electricity, education and health.

“The most alarming development for us has been illegal trawling as it wipes out entire fish stocks, leaving nothing for our fishermen. Maulana Hidayatur Rehman has given some hope to us.

“But since he is in jail for giving voice to our grievances, the people of Gwadar, women included, have come out in his support.”

Hundreds of women, led by HDT leader Hussain Wadela and Senator Mushtaq Ahmed, took part in the rally.

The marchers passed through the major streets of Gwadar, including the Marine Drive, near the beach.

They also highlighted other issues, e.g. the matter of the missing, Dawn reported.

  • PM Modi always targets the Gandhis. Why is he not disqualified, asks Maha Cong chief

PM Modi always targets the Gandhis. Why is he not disqualified, asks Maha Cong chief

    [ad_1]

Nagpur: In the wake of Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification from the Lok Sabha following his conviction in a defamation case, Maharashtra Congress president Nana Patole on Sunday asked why Prime Minister Narendra Modi was not facing a similar action for constantly criticising Sonia Gandhi and late PM Rajiv Gandhi.

He said Rahul Gandhi was being punished for becoming the voice of the people, and added that his disqualification was against democratic values.

Members of the Nagpur District Congress Committee and party workers led by Patole, former Union minister Vilas Muttemwar and other leaders staged a day-long ‘Sankalp Satyagraha’ protest at the Sanvidhan square to show their solidarity with Rahul Gandhi.

“Democracy in the country is facing a big threat because of the Modi-led government’s autocratic rule. Rahul Gandhi had been constantly raising the issue of fugitive economic offenders Nirav Modi and Lalit Modi, who ran away with the country’s money. This is what the Opposition does and it is the duty of the government to reply,” Patole said in a press conference during the protest.

“The country’s prime minister constantly attacked the Gandhi family and their (BJP) ministers insulted former Congress president Sonia Gandhi in the Lok Sabha. They call Rahul Gandhi anti-national, forgetting that he is the grandson of a freedom fighter and son of a martyr. They are targeting members of a family who have sacrificed their lives and this fight is against this mindset of calling a nationalist an anti-national,” he alleged.

Rahul Gandhi was sentenced to two years in jail for calling Nirav Modi and Lalit Modi thieves, he claimed.

“I want to question why there is no action against PM Modi, who constantly attacks Sonia Gandhi and called Rajiv Gandhi ‘chor’ (thief)? Why is he not getting this kind of punishment?” he asked.

Rahul Gandhi was becoming the voice of people, and disqualifying him from the Lok Sabha was against the values of democracy and injustice to him, Patole said.

The Congress leader announced that a huge rally will be taken out on March 29 against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at various places across India.

Gandhi, representing Wayanad parliamentary constituency in Kerala, was on Friday disqualified from the Lok Sabha, a day after his conviction in a defamation case by a court in Surat in Gujarat.

The court sentenced Gandhi to two years in jail in the defamation case over his “Modi surname” remarks at a 2019 poll rally in Karnataka. However, the court also granted him bail and suspended the sentence for 30 days to allow him to appeal in a higher court.

  • Jeff Zients discovers the thanklessness of the White House chief of staff gig

Jeff Zients discovers the thanklessness of the White House chief of staff gig

    [ad_1]

“There’s a transition going on in the administration,” said Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.), who chairs the Congressional Progressive Caucus. “We were looking forward to developing a good relationship with Jeff Zients, but at this point, we’re not in that place yet. So we’re still working on it.”

Jayapal later added: “We’re getting to know each other, and I’ve been really pleased with how responsive and open they are.”

Inside and outside the administration, there is concern over whether Zients has the political instincts and Capitol Hill relationships to deftly navigate a crucial period ahead of Biden’s anticipated reelection run, according to interviews with 16 administration officials, lawmakers and others with knowledge of the internal White House dynamics, some of whom were granted anonymity for fear of retribution.

Every chief of staff faces critics and criticism, often from within the building. Klain endured the same. But Zients’ emergence provides an early test of whether someone without decades of Biden world experience can help the president navigate the political waters. It also will help illuminate whether someone without an extensive political background can manage one of Washington’s most crucial positions.

Zients has his defenders, who say it’s too early to judge and that the complaints have more to do with getting used to a new management style. They stress he is in constant contact with Democrats on the Hill.

But there are early signs that Zients himself recognizes the learning curve he’s up against. Whereas Klain routinely made his own policy and political recommendations to the president, Zients frequently brings in other senior advisers — including Steve Ricchetti and Anita Dunn.

Three administration officials with knowledge of the matter also have said Ricchetti now regularly sits in the daily chief of staff meetings that Biden used to hold one-on-one with Klain, though they stressed Zients gets solo time with the president, too.

White House officials said Zients bringing aides into meetings reflected his way of creating a more “inclusive” environment.

The White House did not make Zients available for comment. But in an email, Klain defended his successor: “What I’m hearing from old White House colleagues and from key allies on Capitol Hill is that Jeff is off to a great start — building on the progress of the past two years, with effective outreach and open communication.”

A longtime corporate executive who previously co-chaired Biden’s transition and directed the White House’s Covid response team, Zients also served in the Obama administration as director of the National Economic Council. He was tapped to bring his managerial skills to the broader day-to-day operations. But six weeks in, congressional Democrats say the decision making in the West Wing has grown more opaque — spurring confusion over policy priorities and debate over how much responsibility Zients is and should be carrying.

One adviser in close touch with a range of key House Democrats graded Zients’ first months on the job bluntly: “I would give him a C-,” the person said. “It’s a generous C-.”

There are signs that Zients is taking steps to shore up his standing among Hill allies. White House officials say he has done consistent outreach to the Hill in his first weeks, speaking with more than 50 lawmakers, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and progressives including Sens. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Bernie Sanders of Vermont.

On Wednesday, Jayapal said Zients called and spoke with her for roughly 30 minutes on a number of caucus issues, including the expansion of overtime eligibility for workers. She said he has called before and that Zients also dropped in on her meeting last week with National Economic Council Director Lael Brainard.

Democrats acknowledged that much of the dissatisfaction may be the result of growing pains as White House operations adjust to Zients’ leadership style. While Klain was distinctly hands-on with nearly every issue — taking part in policy debates, staying in close touch with an array of lawmakers and advocacy groups, and occasionally frustrating aides with his demands and the bottlenecking of decisions — Zients has sought to bring more structure to the process.

That means meetings are more formal and decision making follows a more established procedure, compared to the culture that funneled nearly every development through Klain’s office. Zients — a former management consultant — has shortened White House meetings (often described as too lengthy during the Klain era) in an effort to boost efficiency, preferring to check in frequently with individual aides and teams for updates throughout the day.

“The White House is a quick-paced place and from Jeff on down, we are maximizing every minute,” deputy press secretary Andrew Bates said. “So if we have a 15-minute meeting, it’s because the meeting only needs to be 15 minutes. And if the meeting needs to be an hour, he’ll make it an hour.”

Zients also leans on his deputy, Natalie Quillian, for tasks like tracking the implementation of major legislation that Biden believes will underpin his case for reelection, four people with knowledge of the internal dynamics said.

“Ron was unique in his own talents and abilities around how busy and a whirling dervish of activity he could be,” said Faiz Shakir, an adviser to Sanders who kept in frequent touch with Klain. “[Zients] runs it as you would a CEO at a larger corporation: I have people for that, give them space.”

Five officials acknowledged changes and growing pains, but insisted both are a natural part of any major transition.

“When you have the leader leave and another person comes in, of course there’s change. Of course there’s a change in how people work, and organizations adapt to that,” Dunn, a senior Biden adviser, said in a phone interview Wednesday. “Change is not necessarily a bad thing. And it’s not necessarily an improvement from what happened before. It’s just different and they [Klein and Zients] are different, and they both have enormous strengths.”

Worries about Zients have been shaped by a series of White House decisions made shortly after the 56-year-old moved into his new role. On Zients’ second day, most House Democrats opposed a bill seeking to repeal a major revision of D.C.’s criminal code after the administration issued a statement that appeared to support the local overhaul.

But weeks later, Biden reversed his position, vowing on March 2 to sign the repeal if it reached his desk. The announcement upset House Democrats who felt they had taken a tough political vote for no reason. More infuriating, lawmakers and aides said, was the way the White House went about it.

Biden made no mention of his newfound support for the bill during a private meeting with House Democrats only the day before, nor had any White House officials offered preemptive warnings. It was only when Biden met with Senate Democrats the next day that he disclosed his plans. At the time, D.C. Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton said she learned about the news when asked by reporters during a Congressional Black Caucus press conference. And other fellow Democrats were left unsatisfied after they tried to press White House aides for more information as they read reports about Biden’s conversation with Senate Democrats.

Asked in the aftermath what members needed to hear from the White House, Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-Va.) said the administration needed to have “some honest conversations with people who feel they walked the plank.”

Senior Biden aides admitted to a communication breakdown, blaming inexperience in the White House in dealing with veto threats. Zients has since ordered changes to the communication process, they said.

That puzzlement has only been compounded in recent weeks by lawmakers’ similar struggle to get answers over reports that Biden may reinstitute family detention at the southern border in a bid to limit migration. The prospect alarmed Latino lawmakers and immigration advocates, and came as the lawmakers have also openly criticized the administration’s proposal to clamp down on asylum eligibility.

Zients’ defenders downplayed the complaints, arguing that the shift from Klain was bound to be jarring for some. On top of that, his arrival coincided with a particularly busy period for the White House that prevented Zients from making the typical get-to-know-you rounds. Some Democrats also acknowledged that Biden’s priorities and outreach may need to shift as he positions himself for reelection.

“At the end of the day, as a Democrat, do you want a Democrat in the White House or not?” said Rep. Salud Carbajal (D-Calif.). “So you kind of have to swallow circumstances. We don’t like it. I don’t like it. But, you know, you just have to understand that reality.”

While Biden has taken positions of late that have left traditionally progressive groups in dismay — including the approval of a drilling project in Alaska that enraged environmental groups but thrilled labor unions — Zients has also overseen a relatively productive stretch. The president rolled out his latest budget proposal, turning it into a political cudgel against House Republicans, and he and his team are now in the midst of trying to avert a financial crisis after a pair of regional banks failed.

The sprint to stabilize the banking sector following Silicon Valley Bank’s collapse offered a clear example of the management skills that catapulted Zients into the highest ranks of government, allies said.

“It was a race to get things done before the market opened, and he knows this stuff. He’s good at it,” said one Zients supporter who was in touch with him during the effort. “There was nothing that was not decisive and clear.”

More broadly, some in the White House who chafed under Klain’s leadership view Zients as a welcome change, describing an environment that’s become more professional and influenced less by the chief of staff’s own day-to-day priorities.

On the Hill, some Democrats said they’ve felt the positive effects of having new blood at the top of the White House. Rep. Ann Kuster, the chair of the moderate New Democrat Coalition, said Zients called her on his first day as chief of staff and has remained in close touch.

Jayapal said one element of her relationship with Klain she enjoyed was “just to be able to call or text when I need to. And so far that’s been working pretty well” with Zients, too. She called her relationship with the new chief of staff a work in progress, but said she’s eager to see it improve.

“Ron did say to me, ‘Give him a chance, Congresswoman. You didn’t know me either,’” Jayapal said.

Sarah Ferris contributed to this report.

Punjab Cong chief comes down heavily on AAP govt over Amritpal Singh issue

    [ad_1]

In a statement, he said people’s trust and confidence in the state government was at its lowest ebb ever in history.

“It won’t be any exaggeration that Bhagwant Mann is spearheading the most inept state government in the country which hurtles towards a new embarrassment every new day,” Warring said, adding that the absence of governance in Punjab is a matter of concern for every Punjabi.

He said there are tell tale signs that the state government’s intelligence failed miserably in catching the Khalistan sympathiser even after such ‘meticulous’ planning as is being claimed by the state government.

Notably, the Punjab Police on Wednesday reiterated that they are making all-out efforts to trace Amritpal against whom a lookout circular and a non-bailable warrant had been issued.

“Our efforts are on to arrest him,” he said.

After the police crackdown against elements of ‘Waris Punjab De’ on Saturday, the Khalistan sympathiser switched from Mercedes car to Brezza SUV and later went to a gurdwara in Nangal Ambian village in Jalandhar from where he escaped along with three others on two bikes.

Warring also wrote to Punjab’s Director General of Police, saying he had earlier too written two letters drawing attention to the “growing concern of Punjabis regarding the Amritpal Singh issue and about him getting emboldened with every passing day”.

“I am very sure if you would have cautioned the Punjab government on the urgency of the matter and had the government been serious about the damage he was inflicting on the law and order situation by misguiding the youth of Punjab, the present-day situation could have been avoided.

“..I have always been appreciative of the capabilities of Punjab Police under your able leadership as Director General, but I am dumb struck and aghast at the failure of the Punjab Police.

“I am sure that Amritpal must have been under police surveillance for his anti national activities for quite some time. As per the information in public domain, he is said to have escaped by switching vehicles and changing dresses..,” the letter stated.

Warring mentioned that to allegedly cover up this failure of Punjab Police to nab Amritpal Singh, the police is rounding up a large number of youths who are branded as associates of Waris Punjab De chief.

“No doubt some young boys must have been misguided by his religious sermons, yet I feel that branding them as hardcore anti-national elements will further alienate these young people from mainstream and may push them to become hardliners, which Punjab can ill afford at this juncture.

“We do not support any leniency towards anti-national elements or criminals, but a soft approach is needed to bring these misguided youth back into the mainstream and rehabilitate them,” he added.

Chandrayaan 3, Aditya L1 will possibly be launched in middle of 2023: ISRO chief

    [ad_1]

Ahmedabad: Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chairman S Somanath on Wednesday said the launch of Chandrayaan-3, India’s third lunar mission, and the first solar mission Aditya L1 will possibly happen by the middle of 2023.

He was delivering the inaugural talk on “Indian Capabilities for Space and Planetary Exploration” at the 4th Indian Planetary Science Conference organised at Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) here.

“The Chandrayaan-3 craft is fully ready. It is fully integrated. Of course, there is some correction work being done, and we are building a lot of confidence in the mission through lots of simulations and tests, etc. And possibly the launch can take place by the middle of this year,” Somanath said.

He said Aditya-L1, India’s first solar mission, is going to be “a very unique solar observation capability for which instruments have already been delivered, and ISRO is in the process of integrating them in the satellite.

“I am also eagerly waiting for this (Aditya-L1) launch to happen, possibly by the middle of this year, and I am sure we will make this mission a great success,” said Somanath, who is also Secretary of the Department of Space.

According to ISRO, Chandrayaan-3 is a follow-on mission to Chandrayaan-2 to demonstrate end-to-end capability in safe landing and roving on the lunar surface. It consists of the Lander and Rover configuration.

Speaking on the Chandrayaan-3 mission, Somanath said it would have a similar structure as that of Chandrayaan-2, with the orbiter, a lander and a rover.

“Of course, the orbiter is devoid of all those payloads that are there in Chandrayaan-2. It will have only a little bit of payload. But the primary objective is to take the lander to the orbit of the moon and make it land.

“The primary objective of Chandrayaan-3 is going to be a precise landing. For that, a lot of work is being done today, including building new instruments, building better algorithms, taking care of the failure modes, etc.,” he said.

Somanath said these aspects of the mission are currently being strengthened, with the scientific objectives remaining more or less the same as with the previous lunar missions.

“But of course, we have taken a lot of care in terms of qualifying them for Chandrayaan-3. Let’s hope that this time Chandrayaan-3 will do its right job of landing, and of course, the rover coming out and doing exploration at least on the lunar day on the surface of the moon, which is really going to be very interesting,” he said.

Regarding Aditya L1, he said it will go up to the Lagrangian Point L1, a vantage point to observe the Sun continuously without disturbance over a long period of time.

“And this is going to be a very unique solar observation capability that we are building. Instruments for this have already been delivered, and we are in the process of integrating these instruments in the satellite,” the ISRO chief said.

He said the instruments to be used are currently undergoing testing for integration with the satellite.

“Other payloads have their unique capability in terms of observing not only the Sun but also the particle emissions and measuring them while it travels from the Sun to earth, and how Sun is affecting our space weather,” he said.

Hyderabad: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state president Bandi Sanjay Kumar on Monday called Telangana chief minister and Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) supremo K Chandrashekar Rao’s letter to his party cadre “emotional blackmail of party workers”.

Bandi Sanjay said that the people of Telangana have “learnt that the KTR family members are behind many scandals like the Kaleshwaram scam, the death of intermediate students, the IT scam Dharani scam, and the real estate mafia”. He released his version of a letter after KCR wrote one to BRS party workers calling for support

“Scared that all of these scams are going to be revealed soon, KCR wrote the letter emotionally blackmailing his own party workers from turning against his family. This is a conspiracy to incite the opposition,” the BJP Telangana chief alleged.

“The letter is an example of the loss of people, party leaders and workers’ trust in the leadership of the BRS party and the Kalvakuntla family. A big conspiracy is hidden behind this move of KCR, who never cares about the activists, writing a letter today,” said Bandi Sanjay in his reply.

The BJP leader alleged that KCR directs police “to wave batons and beat up people” who come to Pragati Bhavan to raise their issues. He said that the chief minister has confined himself to the farmhouse and continued to rule.

Bandi Sanjay continued, “KCR has written this letter to incite the emotions of the party activist to prevent the discussion of his family’s corruption, as his ‘paper leak’ son, and ‘liquor scam’ daughter are drowning in many scams. KCR has a history of throwing out activists and leaders who questioned his selfish usage of Telangana. God knows what happened to the common people in 9 years”.

The BJP president called on people to support the BJP for the realisation of the aspirations of the Telangana movement. “If BJP comes to power we will announce a job calendar like the UPSC every year. We will build houses for the poor, and provide loss compensation to the farmers who lost crops. We will provide free education and healthcare,” added the BJP chief.

Indian-origin Laxman Narasimhan assumes role of Starbucks Chief Executive Officer

New York: Indian-origin executive Laxman Narasimhan on Monday officially assumed the role of Chief Executive Officer of global coffee giant Starbucks, joining the growing cohort of business leaders originally hailing from India at the helm of global corporations.

In September last year, Starbucks had announced that Narasimhan would become the company’s next chief executive officer and a member of the Starbucks Board of Directors.

Following the global search for the new leader of Starbucks to succeed company founder and now former CEO, Howard Schultz, Narasimhan joined Starbucks as incoming CEO on October 1, 2022 after relocating from London to the Seattle area.

“Effective today, Laxman Narasimhan has assumed the role of chief executive officer and will join the company’s board of directors,” Starbucks said in a statement.
Narasimhan will lead Starbucks Annual Shareholder Meeting on March 23.

“As he ascends into the role, Narasimhan will continue engaging the leadership team, sharing his early learnings and insights and assessing opportunities for the company as they chart a path forward,” the company said.

Narasimhan, the former CEO of UK-based consumer health, hygiene and nutrition multinational Reckitt Benckiser, brings to Starbucks nearly 30 years of experience leading global consumer goods businesses and advising retail, grocery, restaurant and e-commerce companies.

The company said that over the past five months, he has embarked on a unique immersion experience, traveling to work with employees in over 30 stores, manufacturing plants and in support centers around the world, “earning his barista certification” along the way.

“I am humbled to officially step into my role as Starbucks chief executive officer, leading our incredible team of more than 450,000 green apron partners around the world,” the company statement quoted Narasimhan as saying.

He said the foundation laid by Schultz “building from scratch an iconic global brand fuelled by a lasting passion to uplift humanity” is truly remarkable, “and I am honoured to have the opportunity to build on this deep heritage.

“As a human connection business, we have limitless possibilities to deliver for our partners, our customers, our investors and our communities through every cup and every connection. I am excited to work alongside our partners worldwide to unlock the limitless future of Starbucks.”

With his appointment, Narasimhan joined the growing list of Indian-origin CEOs at the helm of global giants, including Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen, Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai and IBM Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Arvind Krishna. Indra Nooyi had served as PepsiCo’s CEO for 12 years before stepping down in 2018.

Former Mastercard CEO Ajay Banga was last month nominated by US President Joe Biden to lead the World Bank.

Narasimhan holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the College of Engineering, University of Pune, India.

He also has a Master of Arts in German and International Studies from The Lauder Institute at The University of Pennsylvania and a Master of Business Administration in Finance from The Wharton School of The University of Pennsylvania.

Starbucks said that it has unveiled a company-wide reinvention strategy and continues to deliver on more than USD 1 billion in investments in retail partners and stores for prioritized areas such as increased pay and sick time accrual, new financial well-being benefits, modernized training and collaboration, store innovation and equipment and the celebration of coffee.

Independent Starbucks Board of Directors chair Mellody Hobson said in the statement that Narasimhan’s “intensive immersion” into the business coupled with his extensive experience as a proven brand builder, innovator and operator have uniquely prepared him to lead Starbucks into its next phase of growth.

“This immersion has deepened Laxman’s understanding of Starbucks culture and values. In this time of learning and listening, he has already won the hearts and minds of our partners around the world,” Hobson said.

Previously, Narasimhan has served as an executive in various leadership roles at PepsiCo, including as global chief commercial officer, where he was responsible for the company’s long-term growth strategy and commercial capabilities.

Prior to PepsiCo, he spent 19 years at McKinsey & Company, where he advised companies across the retail, consumer goods, and healthcare industries in the US, Asia, and India.

He is a trustee of the Brookings Institution, a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, a member of the UK Prime Minister’s Build Back Better Council and a member of Verizon’s Board of Directors, according to the Starbucks website.
