Police in Lahore books ousted Pak PM Imran Khan on charges of murder, terrorism

    [ad_1]

Lahore: The police in Lahore on Thursday booked Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chief Imran Khan and 400 others on the charges of murder and terrorism during their clash with police personnel during the party’s rally that left one activist dead and scores injured.

This is the 80th case against ousted prime minister Khan registered by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N)-led coalition government during its 11 months of rule.

Police on Wednesday allegedly killed PTI activist Ali Bilal and injured over a dozen during a crackdown outside Khan’s residence from where they were to take out a pro-judiciary rally.

The police also arrested over 100 PTI workers.

The FIR said 11 police officials were injured in the clash with PTI workers who hurled stones at them.

The FIR said six PTI workers also suffered injuries.

Senior PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry on Thursday said instead of registering an FIR against the policemen and their bosses for killing the PTI worker on the complaint of his family, the police have booked 70-year-old Khan and 400 others in his murder.

Fawad Chaudhry, Farukh Habib, Hammad Azhar, and Mahmoodur Rashid are among other PTI leaders named in the FIR.

The cricketer-turned-politician uploaded the brutal torture of PTI workers on social media and said: “This is what the corrupt and murderous cabal of crooks have wrought on the nation. They have violated our Constitution, fundamental rights, and the rule of law. Innocent, unarmed PTI workers, including women, were targets of police violence and brutality with one worker murdered while in custody.”

The ousted premier asked the party supporters across the country to offer funeral prayers in the absentia of the killed worker.

The PTI had announced that it would register a murder case against Punjab caretaker chief minister Mohsin Naqvi, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah, Punjab IGP Usman Anwar, and Lahore police chief Bilal Saddique Kamyana.

Meanwhile, the Punjab IGP has formed a two-member committee to conduct an inquiry into the police clash with PTI workers outside Zaman Park.

Police on Wednesday fired tear gas and used water cannons to disperse PTI activists.

The party claimed that its “peaceful” workers were arrested after reports emerged that the provincial capital had been placed under Section 144, banning public gatherings.

After the bloody clashes between police and his party workers, Khan called off the party’s “pro judiciary” rally from his Zaman Park residence to Data Darbar.

Khan said the government wants an excuse to delay the elections in Punjab and for this, it needs dead bodies. “Police have picked up our 100 workers. We will not let the government and its handlers succeed in its nefarious design,” he said.

Last Sunday, police failed to arrest Khan primarily because of the resistance of a large number of PTI workers outside his residence.

Khan has been in the crosshairs for buying gifts, including an expensive Graff wristwatch he had received as the premier at a discounted price from the state depository called Toshakhana, and selling them for profit.

President Dr. Arif Alvi has announced April 30 for elections in Punjab in line with the Supreme Court’s order. The PML-N-led ruling coalition in the Centre has openly declared that the elections will not be held.

The Punjab caretaker government has imposed a ban on public gatherings in Lahore.

Southwest withholding details on holiday meltdown, senator charges

“We had constituents where it basically took every ounce of us intervening to get refunds. We want a sense of how many more people are there like that,” she said. She added later that she isn’t interested in “proprietary information.”

Jordan, who was speaking at an industry luncheon in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday, said he and Cantwell had a “good meeting” and pledged that his staff will “go deeper” to satisfy her concerns.

“I don’t want to go through the details. It was a private meeting,” Jordan told reporters after the lunch. “And I shared a lot of information with her about where we are in our process. We have time with a senator and her staff, I believe, on Friday, to talk further and understand — go deeper in terms of the numbers. And I’m hopeful for progress there.”

Jordan said that “basically anybody” who dealt with flight issues between Dec. 24 and Jan. 2 was “basically refunded or [we] gave you a travel credit.” He said that as “a gesture of goodwill” Southwest gave out free tickets to many passengers affected by delays and cancellations and that the airline is reimbursing customers who had to buy another airline ticket, stay in a hotel, buy a meal or buy a taxi.

“We are covering all those expenses,” Jordan said, adding that the total cost was “hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of millions of dollars.” (The airline said in January it has so far lost $220 million and that it expects more to come due to the residual effects of reimbursements and refunds owed to passengers.)

Southwest plans to release a comprehensive report this month on what led to the meltdown. Jordan said Wednesday that an internal investigation and external investigation by the consulting company Oliver Wyman are “wrapping up” and should be made public in a few weeks.

Cantwell also added that the fallout from the scheduling meltdown “is going to be a big part of” a major aviation policy bill lawmakers are working on, which is due in September.

“Obviously the public is very disgruntled over this issue of cancellation fees and timelines,” Cantwell said. “Here’s one of the biggest examples of the flying public being let down so we want to know what are the resolutions to this. Did they get their expenses reimbursed and did they get a refund? Or did somebody just shove some frequent flyer miles at them? So we’re just digging a little bit more to get those answers.”

The Transportation Department is also investigating the matter.

AP: TDP will go to court if baseless charges doesn’t stop, MLA warns govt

    [ad_1]

Amaravati: Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) and Telugu Desam Party MLA Payyavula Keshav attacked the state government for leveling baseless charges with regard to the skill development project. He said his party is ready to take the legal route.

The Crime Investigation Department (CID) had earlier alleged that funds for the Skill Development project were being deposited into the accounts of TDP leaders

Talking to media persons through Zoom on Wednesday, Keshav said, “I would like to ask the CID to give details of their accused TDP leaders. The Skill Development project which was introduced by the TDP government for the bright future of young people of Andhra Pradesh has been destroyed by the current state government.”

“When TDP was in power, it along with six other state governments entered into an MoU with the conglomerate corporation Siemens. Are you telling em that the chief minister of all these six states are involved in corruption charges?” Keshav questioned.

Mentioning a report that stated the chairman of Siemens Suman Bose had benefited some politicians Keshav challenged how is Chandrababu Naidu related to it.

Keshav warned the state government that if the baseless charges continue, the latter has to pay a heavy price.

He further alleged that the Skill Development project issue is just a diversion from the ongoing investigation into the murder of Vivekananda Reddy (paternal uncle of CM Jagan Mohan Reddy).

“The Chief Minister is now worried as their MP Avinash Reddy was summoned by the CBI. Hence they have created baseless charges against the TDP to divert public and media attention,” Keshav alleged.

Sisodia being tortured by CBI, pressured to sign documents with false charges: AAP

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: AAP national spokesperson Saurabh Bhardwaj Sunday claimed the CBI was “torturing” senior party leader Manish Sisodia and pressuring him to sign papers containing false charges.

The federal probe agency arrested Sisodia on February 26 for allegedly not cooperating in the investigation into the Delhi excise policy case and being evasive on questions from investigators. A special CBI court on Saturday extended the custody of Sisodia till March 6.

On February 28, Sisodia resigned from the Arvind Kejriwal-led cabinet.

According to officials, the agency wants to utilise Sisodia’s custody to locate the crucial missing file containing legal opinions on the expert committee recommendations on the excise policy, which remains untraceable even now.

“Manish Sisodia is being tortured by the CBI and being pressured to sign the documents containing false charges framed against him. CBI has no evidence against Sisodia. They never mentioned any evidence is missing. They raided his residence but found nothing,” Bhardwaj told reporters here on Sunday.

Sisodia, who was produced before the court on Saturday on the expiry of his five-day CBI custody, claimed that he was “sitting for eight to nine hours” and answering the same questions again and again” and termed it “mental harassment”.

To this, the judge, who had in the last hearing directed the CBI not to use the third degree on the accused, told the probe agency not to ask the “same questions again and again”. “If you have something new, ask him,” the judge said.

  • 2020 Delhi riots: Four acquitted of rioting, arson, theft charges

2020 Delhi riots: Four acquitted of rioting, arson, theft charges

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: A court here has acquitted four men in a case of rioting, vandalism, arson and theft by a mob at Bhagirathi Vihar during the 2020 northeast Delhi riots, saying the accused were entitled to the benefit of doubt.

The court was hearing a case against Dinesh Yadav, Sahil, Sandeep and Tinku, accused of being part of a riotous mob that was involved in looting and arson in some shops on February 25, 2020.

“I find that charges levelled against the accused persons, in this case, are not proved beyond doubt. Hence, accused persons… are acquitted of all the charges levelled against them in this case,” Additional Sessions Judge Pulastya Pramachala said in an order passed earlier this week.

The judge said the formation of unlawful assembly, rioting and vandalism in two shops was “well established” but though both the shops were vandalised, they were not set ablaze.

The court said seven prosecution witnesses could not identify any rioters by appearance or name as they did not see their faces, much less the people involved in the incidents.

It said the testimonies of two police officials were “not reliable” to establish that all the accused persons were members of the riotous mob.

“Prosecution did not prove any record of such vital information being given by these two witnesses in the police station, though ideally it should have been at least recorded in writing. Accused persons were arrested much later in time and statements of these witnesses were also recorded after a long delay.

“I find that accused persons herein are entitled to benefit of the doubt in the present case,” the court said.

Gokalpuri police station had filed a chargesheet against the accused men for several offences, including rioting, theft in dwelling house and mischief by fire or explosive substance with the intent to destroy house, under the Indian Penal Code.

  • SC demands accountability while hearing PIL to debar those facing charges from polls

SC demands accountability while hearing PIL to debar those facing charges from polls

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday observed that there must be accountability at every level and citing government offices, stressed that a common man is bogged down by corruption, while giving the Centre the final opportunity to file its reply to a PIL for debarring those persons facing trial for serious offences from contesting polls.

A bench of Justices K.M. Joseph and B.V. Nagarathna emphasised that the issue raised in the PIL by advocate Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay is an “important matter” and there must be accountability at all levels.

Upadhyay submitted that today, there is a situation where a peon without any decent education can become a minister and “we are celebrating 75 years of independence, but a person with kidnapping and extortion charges can get elected in polls…”

Justice Joseph said: “If we have to truly become a nation we strive to, we have to come back to our values. A common man is bogged down by corruption.”

He added that if one were to go to any government office, can that person come out unscathed? Justice Joseph also said jurist Nani Palkhiwala’s lecture ‘We the people’ speaks about this.

“We have to start at the beginning to retain that character, without that there is no use.” Justice Nagarathna added: “There must be accountability at every level.”

Upadhyay said he had filed a PIL to link property with Aadhaar and the day property is linked with Aadhaar, it will play an important role to weed out corruption.

“We in India don’t need Rs 500 or Rs 2,000 notes as most people have credit card, and debit cards. There needs to be notebandi (note ban) and not notebadli (not exchange)”, added Upadhyay.

The bench orally observed: “You have to get back to your values and if you have that then you have a nation… We need teachers who should be builders of nation… We also have to become humble, to begin with that values are more important.”

After hearing arguments, the top court scheduled the matter for final hearing on April 10.

During the hearing, Centre’s counsel said it would file its response in the matter, though the issue has been covered in previous judgments. The Election Commission contended that it has raised the concern about criminalisation of politics and the issue falls under the domain of the Parliament.

In September last year, the top court had issued notice to the Ministries of Law and Justice and Home, and also the Election Commission on the PIL to debar all those persons, against whom charges have been framed, from contesting election in accordance with the recommendations of the Law Commission’s 244th report.

The petitioner raised concern about an increase in the number of candidates who declared criminal cases against them. Out of 539 winners of 17th Lok Sabha, 233 (43 per cent) declared criminal cases against themselves. After the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, 185 (34 per cent) winners had declared criminal cases.

  • Siddaramaiah charges Karnataka CM  of presenting wrong info to hide BJP’s corruption

Siddaramaiah charges Karnataka CM  of presenting wrong info to hide BJP’s corruption

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: Senior Congress leader Siddaramaiah on Friday accused Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai of using the Justice H S Kempanna Commission’s report to give wrong information in the Assembly regarding the Arkavathy Layout denotification.

The Leader of Opposition in the Karnataka Assembly said the Chief Minister was acting with an intention to “hide” the corruption charges against the BJP government.

He was reacting to Bommai, who on Thursday in the Assembly, reading out the excerpts from the Justice Kempanna Commission’s report which is not in public, had accused the previous Congress government of “redo” or denotifiation of Arkavathy Layout land.

“When I was not present in the Assembly, Bommai shouted and created an impression that there was a big scam worth Rs 8,000 crore. The Kempanna Commission has said that I did not denotify even one gunta of land. Bommai is speaking plain lies,” Siddaramaiah told reporters here. One gunta is equal to 1,089 square feet.

He noted that Arkavathy Layout was formed in 2003, and before his government came to power, 2,750 acres were notified.

“Later, final notification was done for 1,919.13 acres. This was challenged in High Court and went to the Supreme Court, which fixed some parameters and teams were formed to delete some lands when B S Yediyurappa was the chief minister,” Siddaramaiah added.

The file next went to Jagadish Shettar who subsequently became the Chief Minister, but by then the model code of conduct for the election was in place, so it was sent back, he said.

“When our (Congress) government came, there was a petition in the High Court because of which there was some pressure.”

“As our officers had stated that everything was done as per the Supreme Court’s parameters. I approved it. It was not a redo, but a remodified scheme,” Siddaramaiah further said.

Subsequently as Shettar, who was then Leader of Opposition, and others alleged that there was a scam, he had formed a judicial commission for an inquiry, the Congress leader contended.

Pointing out that in September 2021, the HC constituted another committee under retired Justice K N Keshavanarayana, Siddaramaiah said: “Hearing a PIL that sought for tabling of the Justice Kempanna Commission’s report, the High Court had said it can’t be considered in view of the Keshavanarayana committee that’s functioning. Hence, it was wrong to speak on a report that was not tabled.”

With the ruling BJP accusing him of weakening the Lokayukta by forming the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), Siddaramaiah also sought to defend his government’s decision to constitute the new state agency.

“Gujarat, Goa, Assam, Madhya Pradesh and 12 other states have Lokayukta and ACB. Why isn’t the BJP abolishing ACB in these states?” he asked.

Three arrested on charges of killing cow in Bhopal; NSA to be slapped on them

    [ad_1]

Bhopal: Police have arrested three men on charges of killing a cow in Bhopal, an official said on Wednesday, as local authorities demolished “illegal” constructions at the house of one of them and moved to invoke the stringent National Security Act (NSA) against the trio.

The alleged incident occurred on Tuesday in Paras Nagar under Gandhi Nagar police station limits of the Madhya Pradesh capital.
Gandhi Nagar Police Station in-charge Arun Sharma informed that following a tip off, a police team reached the spot and spotted three persons with a blood-stained sharp-edged weapon.

Remains of the slaughtered cow were also found at the spot, he said.

The trio tried to flee the site of the crime after seeing the police team. The police, however, caught them and during interrogation they admitted to killing the bovine, Sharma said.

The three men — identified as Imran (30), Irshad (28) and Javed (30) — were booked and arrested under provisions of the state’s anti-cow slaughter law — Madhya Pradesh Govansh Vadh Pratishedh Adhiniyam and — also the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, said the police officer.

He said process of invoking the National Security Act (NSA) against the accused has been initiated.

The NSA allows the government to detain people for up to one year without a trial if they suspect that they could disrupt public order or endanger the security of India.

After the incident, the Bhopal administration demolished “illegal” constructions at the house of Irshad on Wednesday, he said.

Local MLA Rameshwar Sharma termed the cow killing incident as unfortunate and said this was a serious issue as intention of these people could be to trigger communal tension.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator said he has asked the police to find out if more people were involved in the incident.
“I have asked the police and administration to take strict action in the matter,” he said.

Electricity Charges Will Increase Further In Kashmir: PDD

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: Notwithstanding the public resentment against the hike in monthly electricity bills, the authorities at the Power Development Department (PDD) on Thursday said the charges will increase further as the installation of LT cables and smart meters will display consumer’s actual electricity consumption.

Alleging that many consumers use four to five times more electricity beyond their sanctioned load, news agency KNO quoted the PDD Chief Engineer (Distribution), Javid Ahmad as having said.

“With the installation of LT cables and smart meters, the people will come to know about their actual electricity consumption as many people are sanctioned with 0.5 KV load but are using 5 KV. So, it is still way below what they are paying against the consumption,” he explained.

Stating that the billing tariff will not remain the same indefinitely, he said power is a commodity that needs to be purchased by the government.

Rejecting the people’s demands of switching back to their previous monthly electricity bills, the chief engineer termed those “out of question”. “People at many places protested against the installation of smart meters and LT cables, but ultimately these were installed. We have to move ahead and treat electricity as a commercial commodity,” he stressed.

Terming the hike as “arbitrary”, the people from various localities of the Safakadal area in Srinagar on Wednesday staged a protest against the PDD.

The protestors said they are witnessing a regular increase in their monthly power bills, and urged the authorities to restore their monthly electricity billing to their earlier tariff.
